Clinton Reaches Out to Iowa, N.H. Dems

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has begun calling political operatives in Iowa and New Hampshire to discuss her prospects in the 2008 presidential field, her first outreach to operatives in key states with early contests.
The New York Democrat began making calls to New Hampshire activists over the weekend and Iowa Democrats on Monday.

Clinton spoke to New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch last week, Democratic officials told The Associated Press.

Bonnie Campbell, a former Iowa attorney general who served in the Justice Department under President Bill Clinton, said she spoke to Clinton twice on Monday. Campbell's husband, Edward Campbell, is a former chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party.

"It was highly exploratory about '08," Campbell told The Associated Press. "She knows a lot about Iowa. I have already told her I would support her. We've known her for a very long time."

Today we ask for some sanctions against the Axis of Evil county Iran..

In what is described as a "random act of bipartisan kindness," incoming Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reportedly offered her Republican predecessor Dennis Hastert prized office space during the 110th Congress, according to a report in today's Roll Call.

The article in the "Heard on the Hill" gossip column by Mary Ann Akers suggests that Pelosi will not house the controversial former Speaker of the House in a less desirable space. While he loses the office with a balcony he has occupied, Hastert will take over the coveted office of the outgoing Republican chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, who is retiring at the end of the 109th Congress.

The office provides a favored view of the National Mall. Roll Call also presents the possibility that the move could result in some controversy among House Democrats.

Sen. Hillary Clinton has come closer than ever to officially throwing her hat into the presidential ring, revealing her White House plans in conversations with several political insiders.

"She said to me, ‘I’m really going to go for this. I’m going to make this effort,’” a New York lawmaker told the New York Post.

"She never said she was running for the presidency of the United States or if she was going to announce – or anything like that. It wasn’t a question that needed to be asked. It was an obvious conversation.”

Another Empire State lawmaker who spoke with Hillary during a blitz of Clinton phone calls on Monday said she "revealed she felt pressure to formally jump into the 2008 White House race sooner rather than later because other candidates are becoming increasingly active,” the Post reported.

Rep. Joe Crowley, a Democrat from Queens, spoke with Clinton on Monday and was convinced she’s going to be in the race.

"She just let me know that what I’d been hearing is true and that she wanted my support and help in any way that I possibly could,” Crowley said.

Clinton also spoke with the Rev. Al Sharpton, Westchester County Democrat Nita Lowey and supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis, a major donor, the Post reported.

On Veterans Day, John Hartlaub wandered into the newest cafe in Watertown, N.Y.

It was sparsely furnished, with three Internet stations, a black sofa and an offering of hot or cold cider. A customer who wanted coffee would have to buy it a few doors away.

Hartlaub stayed most of the afternoon anyway. He browsed a few dozen military books for sale, then pulled up a folding chair to watch “Poison Dust,” a documentary about the health effects of depleted uranium weapons on soldiers returning from Iraq.

He left with mostly positive feelings.

“It could end up being very informative and helpful,” said Hartlaub, 41, who has served in the military on and off since 1985.

The organizers of the cafe were hoping for such a reaction. But, being not far from the largest military installation in the Northeast, they are prepared for backlash, too.

Theirs is the country’s first GI coffeehouse for the war in Iraq. It is a project of the peace movement that is focused on changing opinions within the military, with an ultimate goal of ending the war.

After the hour-long session, Bush assured Hakim that Iraq will continue to have U.S. support. That assurance came despite upcoming recommendations from several sources that could lead to significant changes in an Iraq policy that Bush acknowledges is not making sufficient progress.

"We talked about the need to give the government in Iraq more capability as soon as possible so the elected government of Iraq can do that which the Iraqi people want to secure their country from extremists and murderers," Bush told reporters. "I told him that we're not satisfied with the pace of progress in Iraq and that we want to continue to work with the sovereign government of Iraq."

Not able to sleep well either. Feels like an impending doom is going to happen and I can't sleep thru the night. So I know how you feel. All those thought circling around in your head.

The weather here has been awful and has stirred up the RA. Just called the Doc for some pain meds which I don't usually take. Doc says I have a high tolerance to pain so you know this is a bad episode. Just in time for the holidays!! But I'll get thru it, always do.

Veterans' advocates fought long and hard to have Congress pass measures in 1997 that require the Department of Defense (DOD) to document the pre- and post-war health of American troops.

Which is precisely why those same veterans' advocates are hopping mad today.

DOD implements those mandatory measures haphazardly at best. "Compulsory" pre-and post-deployment face-to-face medical examinations are not happening regularly. Only 22% of all returning troops who come forward with symptoms of potential post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are being referred for further mental health evaluation. And by the Veterans Administration's (VA) own account, record numbers of veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are resurfacing at their facilities, where a third are being diagnosed with possible mental health disorders. There is no record of how many of those veterans are the very same soldiers who did not get diagnosed at demobilization time in a face-to-face medical examination that did not happen. Or of how many of them initially tried to come forward with PTSD symptoms, but were not referred for further mental health evaluation.

But one thing is for sure: A solider who at the time of his demobilization has no documentation of his condition on the post-deployment health assessment form (the 2796) that he may or may not have filled out is going to have a hell of a time later when he tries to get free treatment from the VA or collect compensation for a service-connected disability.

"There's no way you'll read that not coming forward at 2796 time will be held against you later, but it's true," says Shad Meshad of the National Veterans Foundation. "It's all about money and percentages, because there's a major difference in a monthly reimbursement on 30% as opposed to 70% and 70% as opposed to 100. The folks at the Department of Veterans' Benefits who review all the paperwork try to measure how much PTSD is in your brain pretty much the same way that they calculate how much of an arm or leg is missing. We're talking about money: it's all about big, big, big money."

Nearly 10 years after veterans' advocates successfully lobbied for Congress to mandate pre-and post-deployment face-to-face medical examinations for troops, (see public law 105-85, sections 762-767 in the attached National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1998), they are still facing many of the same access-to-care and liability issues they once thought they had resolved.

This story really ticks me off.

Some BRAD BLOG readers may recall the story of Army Specialist Douglas Barber, who committed suicide last January after suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) upon returning from Iraq. We followed up with a letter that Barber himself had written in 2005 describing what some of the troops coming home from Iraq were dealing with. One graf:

We come home from war trying to put our lives back together but some cannot stand the memories and decide that death is better. They kill themselves because they are so haunted by seeing children killed and whole families wiped out.
In his letter, Barber wrote about the struggle that soldiers face in dealing with PTSD when they return stateside: "PTSD comes in many forms not understood by many: but yet if a soldier has it, America thinks the soldiers are crazy." He then goes on to excoriate those in the media who claim to "support the troops" even while they ignore this enormous problem and the administration's lack of funding for VA programs:

Foley blogger: Senator Elizabeth Dole won't seek re-election

Elizabeth Dole, the Republican Senator from North Carolina, who was a one-time candidate for President of the United States, will not seek re-election in 2008, according to the blogger who was the first to publish former Congressman Mark Foley's e-mails with teenaged, male Congressional pages.

Lane Hudson, who blogged at Stop Sex Predators anonymously before being "outed" at Radar Online, reported the news at his new blog called News for the Left, citing a "confidential source on Capitol Hill." He claims that in the aftermath of the Republican Party's failure to secure their majority in the US Senate, Dole has become so "completely demoralized" that she is no longer interested in standing for re-election.

Dole, the wife of former Senator Bob Dole who failed in his campaign to replace President Bill Clinton in 1996, was elected to the Senate from her home state of North Carolina in 2002. She had earlier challenged George W. Bush for the nomination for president in 2000. After the 2004 Election, she was appointed the Chairperson of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2004, and became responsible for fundraising efforts in support of retaining the Senate's Republican majority this November.

Gunfight at US embassy in Yemen
A gunman has opened fire outside the US embassy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, before being shot by security forces and arrested, Yemeni officials say.
No embassy staff were injured in the incident outside the well fortified and heavily guarded compound.

The suspect was taken to hospital and will be interrogated, officials said.

The Yemeni authorities have cracked down on Islamic extremists linked to al-Qaeda since attacks began against western targets six years ago.

Reports say the embassy appeared closed to the public and US officials were not immediately available for comment.

The gunman appeared to be acting alone and was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. His motive was not clear, the officials said.

He was unable to breach the first of three security lines around the embassy in an eastern suburb of Sanaa.

Yemen's government is a staunch backer of the US campaign against international terrorism and received military aid from Washington.

5. To hear "we can't bring the troops home until the Iraqis can stand up for themselves" is ridiculous. They are standing up for themselves. A Sam Seder said on the radio this morning, Iraq is becoming the "biggest exporter of dead Americans." therefore, it is an economic decision (we've already wasted 350 billion bucks) and we should pull out to end the Iraqi growth industry.

I don't have a thyroid problem, Reefer, I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. It's an auto immune desease. Similar to MS and Lupus, but not as bad.

In addition to a 26 percent production increase over past year -- for a total of 5,644 metric tons -- the amount of land under cultivation in opium poppies grew by 61 percent. Cultivation in the two main production provinces, Helmand in the southwest and Oruzgan in central Afghanistan, was up by 132 percent.

White House drug policy chief John Walters called the news "disappointing."

Cindy Sheehan and other anti-war activists were out in full-force last April protesting the war in Iraq, now, seven months later, the Camp Casey group is camping out in a McLennan County courtroom.

Both sides agree on April 14, 2006, deputies asked the defendants, Emily Hardy and Hiram Meyers, to move from the spot where they were protesting.

Sheehan said, "We’ve always cooperated with the authorities. We’ve always been very safe."

However, that April day, the protestors didn't move because, Sheehan said, they weren't obstructing the road.

Hardy and Meyers face class B misdemeanor charges.

If convicted, the defendants face up to 180 days in jail and or a $2,000 fine, but fellow protestors said just because it's a misdemeanor doesn't mean it's not important.

He has repeatedly said that the Holocaust has been used as a tool of propaganda, and banned scholars here from research on the subject. The president also sent a 3,000-word letter to Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel outlining his arguments.

Mohammadi said next week's conference will "provide the opportunity for scholars from both sides to give their papers in freedom and without pre-conceived ideas." He refused to give the names of the 67 international scholars he said were attending the seminar, out of concern that their countries would prohibit them from coming.

He said the conference does not mean that Iran "denies the crimes of Hitler."

"Since we are not accused and responsible for the Holocaust, we are an impartial judge," Mohammadi said.

The policy is, always was, and in the minds of the Bush cabal will always will be, to occupy Iraq indefinitely while we install 14 permanent military bases, where they have absolutely no business of the Iraqi people to be there. And until they are absolutely forced to do otherwise that is where they will stay, which is what is precisely meant by Bush's recent rejection of any kind of "graceful exit."

Dennis Kucinich is calling for an end to funding for the war and occupation now. Ultimately, that's the only reason the war in Vietnam ended at all. Congress stopped paying for it. That's what must happen now.

The Iraqi people want us out now and their patience is at an end. It matters not that demagogues in other countries are calling for the same thing. It is our misfortune that we have made it so easy for them to exploit our strategic idiocy. But it is NOT an excuse to prolong the inevitable. This may be our last chance to use withdrawal of our unwelcome troops as some kind of bargaining chip. In perhaps another six months we WILL be forced to leave, and not by naysayers of some kind at home as the right wingers have accused, bu

Worker Productivity Slows While Layoffs Climb

Slower-than-expected growth in worker productivity and labor costs reported today by the Labor Department could ease inflation concerns at the Federal Reserve.

Worker productivity increased by 0.2 percent for the third quarter of 2006, better than the zero change in the preliminary numbers released last month but down considerably from the 1.2 percent growth in the second quarter. Productivity is a key measure of living standards; when it increases, companies can pay employees more without having to raise prices, thanks to the increased output.

Labor costs for the third quarter grew at a 2.3 percent pace, down from the 3.8 percent preliminary estimate the Labor Department released last month.

Nevertheless, there are still signs of concern in the labor market as the economy continues to slow. According to an independent report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas also released today, planned layoffs rose 11 percent in November—75,733 jobs lost, up from 69,177 in October. The increase was fueled by cuts in the auto industry, which accounted for 20,318 planned layoffs. Car manufacturers in the United States have already passed the 2001 record in planned job cuts (133,686), tallying 151,457 through the first 11 months of this year.

The Pentagon is a giant,incredibly complex establishment,budgeted in excess of $500B per year. The Rumsfelds, the Adminisitrations and the Congressmen come and go but the real machinery of policy and procurement keeps grinding away, presenting the politicos who arrive with detail and alternatives slanted to perpetuate itself.

How can any newcomer, be he a President, a Congressman or even the Sec. Def. to be - Mr. Gates- understand such complexity, particulary if heretofore he has not had the clearance to get the full details?

Answer- he can’t. Therefor he accepts the alternatives provided by the career establishment that never goes away and he hopes he makes the right choices. Or he is influenced by a lobbyist or two representing companies in his district or special interest groups.

From a practical standpoint, policy and war decisions are made far below the levels of the talking heads who take the heat or the credit for the results.

This situation is unfortunate but it is ablsolute fact. Take it from one who has been to war and worked in the establishment.

This giant policy making and war machine will eventually come apart and have to be put back together to operate smaller, leaner and on less fuel. But that won’t happen unitil it hits a brick wall at high speed.

We will then have to run a Volkswagon instead of a Caddy and get along somehow. We better start practicing now and get off our high horse. Our golden aura in the world is beginning to dull from arrogance.
