China issues warning to North Korea By WILLIAM FOREMAN, Associated Press Writer

China, which holds the key to whether tough U.N. sanctions will be imposed for North Korea's nuclear test, warned its ally Tuesday that the detonation would harm relations, but called on the United Nations to use "positive and appropriate measures." China's U.N. ambassador says North Korea must face "some punitive actions" for its nuclear test.

China's Foreign Ministry vented its anger against its communist ally over the test for a second day, with a spokesman saying that relations had been damaged.

"The nuclear test will undoubtedly exert a negative impact on our relations," the spokesman, Liu Jianchao, said at a routine media briefing. He said Monday's test was done "flagrantly, and in disregard of the international community's shared opposition."

But Liu urged diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis and said that the time was not right for punishment, much less military action.

The North, meanwhile, stepped up its threats aimed at Washington, saying it could fire a nuclear-tipped missile unless the United States acts to resolve its standoff with Pyongyang, the Yonhap news agency reported from Beijing.

"We hope the situation will be resolved before an unfortunate incident of us firing a nuclear missile comes," Yonhap quoted an unidentified North Korean official as saying. "That depends on how the U.S. will act."

The official said the nuclear test was "an expression of our intention to face the United States across the negotiating table," reported Yonhap, which didn't say how or where it contacted the official, or why no name was given.

Even if Pyongyang is confirmed to have nuclear weapons, experts say it's unlikely the North has a bomb design small and light enough to be mounted atop a missile. Their long-range missile capa

Video depicts Noe, GOP the way they wish they weren't

A liberal advocacy group called ProgressOhio released a video of Tom Noe serving as the master of ceremonies at the Jan. 7, 2005, swearing-in ceremony of Judith Lanzinger to the Ohio Supreme Court.

The video superimposes Barbra Streisand singing "The Way We Were" over Mr. Noe introducing several of the most powerful Republicans in Ohio.

Within five months, most of them denounced Noe as he was accused of funneling money into President Bush's re-election campaign and embezzling money from the rare-coin funds he set up to invest $50 million from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation.

The video can be viewed by going to http://www.progressohio.org/page/s/noeform and providing an e-mail address, name, and ZIP Code.

Anyone know anything more about "The List"? I'm unsure how I feel about the whole thing, but I'd like to learn a bit more about it. I don't really care about the names on it, but does anyone know if it has been distributed or seen evidence of it percolating through politics?

Sam, what do you think about "The List"?

Republicans target three Senate races

Heavy investments in Ohio, Tennessee and Missouri in effort to limit losses

The RNC’s targeted races are Sen. Mike DeWine’s re-election effort in Ohio; Sen. Jim Talent’s bid for a new term in Missouri, and Bob Corker’s drive to hold the Tennessee seat of retiring Majority Leader Bill Frist.

Legal Battle Over Access to Records Taking Shape in Foley Investigation
"State and federal investigators are trying to determine whether Foley's Internet exchanges with former House pages constituted a crime. Since opening a preliminary investigation a week ago, they have started interviewing former pages and congressional aides.

"Authorities are now deciding whether to subpoena records from the office and home computers that [former Rep. Mark] Foley used, according to people familiar with the case, who requested anonymity. Such evidence would be central in building a case against the Fort Pierce Republican." (Palm Beach Post)

Baker Sees Iraq Panel Departing From Bush Strategy

WASHINGTON, Oct. 8 — James A. Baker III, the Republican co-chairman of a bipartisan commission assessing Iraq strategy for President Bush, said today that he expected the group to depart from Mr. Bush’s call to “stay the course.”

In an interview on the ABC News program “This Week,” Mr. Baker said, “I think it’s fair to say our commission believes that there are alternatives between the stated alternatives, the ones that are out there in the political debate, of ‘stay the course’ and ‘cut and run.’ ”

Hastert: Anyone hiding page issue leaves

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Tuesday he'll dismiss anyone on his staff found to have covered up concerns about ex-Rep. Mark Foley"s approaches to former pages.

Hastert said he huddled with his staff last week and in hindsight, they could have handled the complaints better.

But he added, "If they did cover something up they should not have their jobs."

U.S. won't hold direct talks with North Korea
Pyongyang threatens more nuclear tests even amid world condemnation

Updated: 46 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration rejected anew Tuesday direct talks with North Korea and said it would not be intimidated by a reported threat from Pyongyang that it could fire a nuclear-tipped missile unless the U.S. acts to resolve the standoff.

“This is the way North Korea typically negotiates by threat and intimidation,” said U.S. Ambassador John Bolton. “It’s worked for them before. It won’t work for them now.”

The White House said, meanwhile, there is a “remote possibility” that the world never will be able to fully determine whether North Korea succeeded in conducting a nuclear test Monday. While acknowledging that the action was provocative, White House press secretary Tony Snow suggested that it’s possible that the test was something less than it appeared.

US grants N Korea nuclear funds (this happened in 2002-during Bush Admin)

The US Government has announced that it will release $95m to North Korea as part of an agreement to replace the Stalinist country's own nuclear programme, which the US suspected was being misused.
Under the 1994 Agreed Framework an international consortium is building two proliferation-proof nuclear reactors and providing fuel oil for North Korea while the reactors are being built.

In releasing the funding, President George W Bush waived the Framework's requirement that North Korea allow inspectors to ensure it has not hidden away any weapons-grade plutonium from the original reactors.

President Bush argued that the decision was "vital to the national security interests of the United States".

WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Mike Rogers, the nation's top gay activist blogger, says he will out more Republicans on Capitol Hill each day for hypocritically opposing gay rights for political reasons when they themselves are gay -- starting with staff members, then turning to members of Congress and finally the leadership of the Republican Party.

Last night, Rogers posted the first two names of GOP staffers on what he says is his list of closeted hypocrites -- including one high in the office of House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) -- on his blog at http://www.blogactive.com. Rogers also wrote to the House Ethics Committee asking them to investigate the two men because as highly compensated staffers, they had "a vested interest in protecting closeted men like Mark Foley so the majority can remain in power."

Sam, thank you!thank you!thank you! for that last comment on conservatives. I have said repeatedly, at what point do we hold these narrow minded people, who misuse the bible to support their narrow mindedness and biggotess, accountable for their stupidity. I know it's not nice to call people stupid, but at what point do you call these people exactly what they are. I don't buy this excuse that people do not pay attention and therefore are ill informed. Anyone with a brain knows the conservative evangelical christians pay close attention to what is going on politically, which is why they are trying to take over our government and form a theocracy.
