Good Morning Kristapea!
IIRC, I sent out my Jackalope postcard on your behalf to save Morning Sedition. Can't believe that didn't help.
Sam Seder is always my first choice. Because he is the best that AAR has to offer!

Air Force Secretary Suggests Testing Microwave Weapons on the American Public
As if things could not get any scarier in Washington among members of the Bush regime and their plans to “make us safer”, the Associated Press reports that Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne stated Tuesday, September 12, that weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on Americans in crowd-control situations before being deployed on the battlefield.

This torture debate is a screen for the WIRETAPPING agenda backdoor move.
It's a standard offensive move: the fake. Fake one way, throw the other.
Listen for background noises on your phone while McCain and Graham are blowing smoke about torture. It's the Bush Administration and the NSA listening in on your phone calls, so they can remember to torture YOU later!

Go, Sam! Bush needs the "program" (read, "POGRAM") to go forward because otherwise he's gettin' impeached.
Why don't they just f**kin' go forward with the Geneva Conventions upheld in the bill, explicitly?

can we get this on pod cast...cus i am at school
Posted by: ladysugarwalls at September 18, 2006 10:13 AM
No, this torture debate is a screen to keep Bush from being the first American President to be indicted for war crimes. I believe the retroactive immunity, not the future ability to torture, is what's driving the hard line the administration is taking on this bill...
Posted by: Scout at September 18, 2006 10:13 AM
I've heard through the grapevine that Laura Flanders is going to get the 10pm til 1am slot but I guess it's not confirmed yet if it's not on the website yet. Jon Elliot's not terrible. I wouldn't mind having Thom Hartman in that slot - maybe a replay of the show that's on when Franken's show is on.

Hey Sam, Neocons claim Bush has kept us safe wadging the war on Terror in Iraq, and that the proof is we are fighting them there so we dont have to fight them here. The distinction being made being WHAT? No US citizens killed by the enemy on US soil? Heres a question, when we are guest abroad, do we not take her with us. (This is going to get sappy) Is an embassy in the Green Zone or on the outskirts of Bahgdad not on the ground, and is that ground not under the sovereign protection of this sovereign country, this being America? And on what day ever and would we now not consider the land an American embassy occupies, American soil? And the men posted at this location, who hail from America, are they not considered American soldiers by this Bush administration should this embassy and should these men be attacked and killed by the so-called terrorist who Bush claims cant get us, all due to Bush himself. So does Bush want us to believe that when Americans die in the Green Zone, or a US military vehicle, thats not American property? Not American territory? even if trmporarily occupied, we dont claim responsibility. Bush wants us to believe when a man dies on what Bush himself doesnt even relate to as our turf, hes somehow keeping that man safer how? Because he died on the dumpsite for Bush's screw ups as president, in a forign country, a thousand miles from his home, that Bush himself made made, which Bush doesnt want to admit is real. Bush just wants to sweep it under the rug. Iraq, Bush's Wonderland. Or its like Oz and he's getting to play the Wizard.
Bush-"Shoot, screwed up, better cover our butts. Iraqs broken, get a democrat or dog, and put it next to the mess, that way when the American voters see it, they'll think they did it. Shoot, put some Americans next to the mess like we did with Lyndie Rngland, then when the American voters see the mess we made, they'll think they did it themselves because they wont see us polititions, nope, just a couple of suckers, themselves."

Control of Senate up for grabs
by Joe in DC - 9/18/2006 09:44:00 AM
From Rasmussen Reports:
The battle for control of the U.S. Senate is getting closer—much closer. Little more than a week ago, our Balance of Power summary showed the Republicans leading 50-45 with five states in the Toss-Up category. Today, Rasmussen Reports is changing three races from “Toss-Up” to “Leans Democrat.” As a result, Rasmussen Reports now rates 49 seats as Republican or Leans Republican while 48 seats are rated as Democrat or Leans Democrat (see State-by-State Summary) There are now just three states in the Toss-Up category--Tennessee, New Jersey, and Missouri.
Only 50 days til November 7th.
Today's NY Times profiles the Virginia Senate race: "As Senator Falters, a Democrat Rises in Virginia." Six months ago, very few pundits would have predicted that George Felix Allen would be faltering and facing a very tough challenge, but he is.

Didn't George Allen abuse his own siblings? Pull his sister upstairs by her hair when it was bedtime, that sort of thing?

Laura Flanders is great. Best monolouges in the bizz. I was surprised she only got a weekend slot back at the beginning. But it would be a shame to loose Malloy for her to get her own weekday show. But she isn't paid by AAR anymore, her show is now sponsered by the Nation Magazine and they'd have to pony up more money for her to get a weekday show. I don't see that happening. I'm just bummed about the whole new line up thing. Actually I've been bummed since Unfiltered was dropped for Springer.

GOP talk of vibrant economy rings hollow By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer
Mon Sep 18, 3:15 AM ET
Used boots fetch $3 and old salt-and-pepper shakers bring in a buck at a makeshift flea market along Highway 27, presumably not what President Bush and Republicans have in mind when they herald a vibrant economy.
Times are "very good for the rich and very, very bad for the poor" who "can't afford to live," laments Larry Mitchell, 43, a now-and-then merchant peddling his wares recently in a submarine sandwich shop parking lot. He says the middle class is "having a hard time."
In the Ohio River Valley, where people decry high gas prices, stagnant wages, lost jobs and factory closures, many don't buy the claim that the economy is humming along.
Seven weeks before the midterm elections, the gulf between Bush's perceptions and that of voters form the political backdrop across the country as well as in a region with several competitive House races. This area typically gets left out of national boom times and usually feels the pinch more than others during slowdowns.
Here and elsewhere differing views on the economy could hurt the GOP's efforts to retain control of the House and Senate this fall, and give voters reason to put Democrats in charge instead.
____
In Washington, the economist in chief encourages GOP candidates to embrace the economy as a stellar accomplishment. "I'd say 'Look at what the economy has done. It's strong. We've created a lot of jobs,'" Bush said recently.
So, Republicans hit the campaign trial with a rallying cry that 5.7 million jobs have been created since August 2003. They cast Democrats as tax-raisers who would bring economic gloom and doom.

Man crashes Capitol barrier, is arrested By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer
46 minutes ago
A man crashed his vehicle into a security barricade at the U.S. Capitol on Monday, ran into the building and was arrested, forcing the complex to briefly be locked down, authorities said.
Police shut down the complex as they investigated the incident, and to ensure that all people there were authorized to be there. The incident happened shortly before 8 a.m., EDT, witnesses said. The Capitol complex was reopened within the hour.
Hill staffers were briefly instructed to remain in their offices while police searched to ensure there were no other interlopers.
Construction workers and police said the man drove his SUV through a barricade at the Capitol, where a major visitors' center is under construction. His vehicle also crashed into a water fountain on the plaza in the middle of the construction area.
Witnesses said the man, wearing a blue ballcap, ran into the Capitol near the Rotunda and was pursued by police. A construction supervisor said the man was apprehended in a construction area on the third floor of the building.
In the summer of 1998, two Capitol Police officers were shot to death when a man with a history of mental illness opened fire in the building. The man was wounded and captured.
Police cordoned off the vehicle, a light-colored SUV, which sustained a damaged front fender, and were searching it.

Dear Sam:
spend some time investigating how the REPUBLICANS are INVADING CANADA to AMERICANIZE the Convervative wing of our society.
What does this mean?
That they're UNDERMINING the policies & practises of countries like MEXICO & Canada to help support BUSH POLICIES of CORPORATIZATION...
why should AMERICANS CARE?
1. why wouldn't you care?... well, you should.
2. they're cutting off the MEANS by which NORTH AMERICANS can CHOOSE their FREEDOMS
3. they're CORPORATIZING THE CONTINENT... you think that means AMERICANS WIN?
not bloody likely. NONE of THE LIBERALS will WIN anything.
This is about a GLOBAL effort to keep the RICH VERY RICH in places like DUBAI or SWITZERLAND... not the WORK-A-DAY North American.
Until AMERICANS realize what is going on in the REST OF THE CONTINENT... they're going to be BLIND-SIDED when they realize the ESCAPE to DEMOCRACY is being cut off...
there will BE NO DEMOCRACY in NORTH AMERICA but for the CORPORATE ELITE.
IF YOU DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO CANADA, THEY'RE GOING TO SCREW ALL OF US.

If we get a 30's era style depression soon I wouldn't be surprised. Plus, I won't feel so alone in being poor. Maybe that'll be a good thing?
Some people before the elections said that maybe Bush needs another four years to convince people of just how bad it can get.... I hated that argument but maybe there's some truth to it. People need to see a clear difference between the parties. There's too many people who think the Dems are "just as bad" as the Reps. If we get a new Dem FDR to replace Bush - maybe people in this generation will finally see that the Dems, while not perfect, are much more inclined to do things to help this Nation instead of just doing things to help an elite 1.1 percent of Americans.

Congress should call his bluff. Article 3 does not need to be redefined. That's another one of those diversions. And, I think he's trying to cover his own butt from international war crimes. The Red Cross should be announcing the detaisl soon.

Frankly, another run-of-the-mill lefty talker like O'Brian [sp!] rehashing points I've heard 5x before doesn't add much to my day....

Pesticide Spraying in New York City
City Again Fogs Crowded Brooklyn Streets
The New York City Dept. of Health and Mental
Hygiene sprayed the dangerous pesticide “Anvil”
into crowded residential sections of Brooklyn
last month and continues to fog Staten Island,
purportedly to kill mosquitoes which may or may
not be carrying West Nile virus. City officials
also ordered spraying in Queens and the Bronx.
The first spraying of the year in Brooklyn took
place on the evening of August 21. The spray
truck -- now driven by unionized NYC workers
wearing DOHMH insignias -- recklessly spewed
pesticides in a thick cloud down crowded 5th
Avenue in Sunset Park and in the surrounding area
in utter disregard of the hundreds of people
walking the streets. The truck blasted pregnant
women and many, many little children with the
spray, and fogged people in dozens of restaurants
without warning -- their doors wide open -- as they ate.

[voice over]
Private Witt: --"This great evil. Where does it come from? How'd it steal into the world? What seed, what root did it grow from? Who's doin' this? Who's killin' us? Robbing us of life and light. Mockin' us with the sight of what we might've known. Does our ruin benefit the earth? Does it help the grass to grow, the sun to shine? Is this darkness in you, too? Have you passed to this night?"

Times are "very good for the rich and very, very bad for the poor" who "can't afford to live," laments Larry Mitchell, 43, a now-and-then merchant peddling his wares recently in a submarine sandwich shop parking lot. He says the middle class is "having a hard time."
Sounds like the liberals have found a real indicator of how the economy is doing. He speaks for the middle class??

Iraq al-Qaida says pope, West are doomed By ANNA JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer
57 minutes ago
CAIRO, Egypt - An al-Qaida-linked extremist group warned Pope Benedict XVI on Monday that he and the West were "doomed," as protesters returned to the streets across the Muslim world to demand more of an apology from the pontiff for his remarks about Islam and violence.
The Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization of Sunni Arab extremist groups that includes al-Qaida in Iraq, issued a statement on a Web forum vowing to continue its holy war against the West. The authenticity of the statement could not be independently verified.
The group said Muslims would be victorious and addressed the pope as "the worshipper of the cross" saying "you and the West are doomed as you can see from the defeat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya and elsewhere. ... We will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose head tax, then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (killed by) the sword."

People need to organize labor unions, not just for economic security and power in the workplace, but to gain their rightful place as citizens in this democracy.
Without ORGANIZATION, vital, livlihood organization, the POLITICAL strength of the common people is squashed by the big money corporate power monoliths.
The corporate chiefs have taken over the government.

If you get an error when you hit post do this first: Hit back, then refresh & see if your post did, in fact, get posted. For me, it does get posted more often then not.
If you actually DID post THREE times, that's not cool. A number of people who hang here are on dialup. Yeah, I know...bear skins & stone knives, but they still do exist. (*nods toward crankie*)
The length of the thread is directly proportional to their hari-kari factor. That is, counting in MINUTES how long a post or refresh command takes to execute.
In plain English, small threads allow the dialupers to participate. Long threads do NOT. Please be considerate of that.

Sep. 18, 2006 -- Deflation of U.S. casualty figures in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to U.S. military sources, the Pentagon is consistently deflating the number of combat deaths in Iraq by manipulating the figures. For example, combat deaths in battlefield Medivac units are not being counted as combat casualties. One source said, "if someone is killed on the ground, that is counted as a combat death . . . if the wounded soldier is placed in a Medivac helicopter, the minute the door is closed and he dies . . . that is not counted as a combat death."
The undercounting of combat deaths is supported in a new documentary titled "The Ground Truth." In the film, a number of Iraq combat veterans report that soldiers and Marines who commit suicide in Iraq or stateside from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are not counted as combat casualties. Nor are veterans suffering from PTSD being given adequate care by military hospitals or Veterans Administration hospitals, charge vets who appear in the documentary.

Sep. 17-18, 2006 -- SPECIAL REPORT. On Jul. 14 and Aug. 8, WMR reported on convicted Ohio Rep. Bob Ney's longtime intelligence role for the CIA. More details are emerging about that role. The following is what WMR reported last month on the Ohio Republican:
"WMR has learned that covert Iranian backchannels employed by a current member of the U.S. House of Representatives in support of [Valerie] Plame's Brewster Jennings & Associates network were thoroughly compromised by the White House leak. The member of Congress, who, like Plame, had been an earlier CIA "non-official cover (NOC) energy consultant" in the Middle East during the late 1970s and early 80s, and who was familiar with the early weapons of mass destruction proliferation involving the A. Q. Khan network of Pakistan, Libya, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, was compromised and he and his connections to the Brewster Jennings & Associates intelligence network and Iranian government contacts were made known to adversarial intelligence agencies. The staff of the member whose covert Iranian contact network was compromised was targeted and tainted with Jack Abramoff money, putting the U.S. Representative in extreme political jeopardy.

I love Laura Flanders. But not to replace Mike Malloy. Laura would not permit the likes of Jerky or Reverend Sky Blue on her show. Mike was not an intellectual snob. He embodied the spirit of the true left. He was the working man's progressive. He is smart, funny, and his honesty is raw.
The wimpy liberalism of Al Franken, Jerry Springer, and those who now rule the Democratic Party do not represent the left. This is the conservative definition of Liberals. The true Liberals are those who threw down their lives for minimum wages, unions, veterans rights, civil rights, women's rights, and anti war protest.
It takes tremendous courage to speak truth to power. You know it. Because most of you have done it.

I think it's the Dems who are always talking about the "middle class". And that is, I believe, because people in general don't like to identify themselves as being poor, even if they are. When a politician says "middle class", most people believe they are middle class. They don't want to think of themselves as poor - or too rich! They like thinking of themselves as normal.
So, the middle class talk is coming from Dems who are trying to reach people where they are, even if they're a little too rich or too poor to really be considered middle class.
The poor, however, do vote. When they have someone to vote for, that is. John Edwards seems to be the only politician with presidential ambitions that's speaking to the needs of the poor (and not just the middle class.)

Reason #3: Creating private accounts could dampen economic growth, which would further weaken Social Security's future finances.

Reason #5: The odds are against individuals investing successfully.
Reason #6: What you get will depend on whether you retire when the market is up or down.

Path to 9/11 Writer Slams Critics, Defends Movie As Totally Accurate
In today’s Wall Street Journal, Path to 9/11 writer Cyrus Nowrasteh defends his screenplay as accurate. Nowrasteh writes:
I felt duty-bound from the outset to focus on a single goal–to represent our recent pre-9/11 history as the evidence revealed it to be. The American people deserve to know that history: They have paid for it in blood…Fact-checkers and lawyers scrutinized every detail, every line, every scene. There were hundreds of pages of annotations.
It’s clear ABC’s claim that inaccurate material was included because it was a “docudrama” was just spin. The people who created the film regard it as “the truth” and it was marketed as such. Nowrasteh doesn’t address the multiple glaring inaccuracies in the film, including:
– A scene where former National Security advisor Sandy Berger pulls the plug on a clear chance to take out Osama Bin Laden. According to the 9/11 Commission report, this never happened.
– A scene where Madeleine Albright overrules military commanders and insists on informing the Pakistanis about a missile strike on a suspected Bin Laden hideout. According to the 9/11 Commission Report, this never happened.

You should take a look at Thom Hartmann's new book. He contends, I believe correctly, that a strong MIDDLE CLASS is the foundation of true liberal democracy. Which is why the neo-cons want cheap labor, because it undermines the middle class and leads to oligarcy, which is what they want.

Personally, I rather like Jon Elliot.
I wrote AAR an email weeks ago saying that Elliot should get more airtime.
he epitomizes (well, aside from Thom) the LIBERAL point of view, without HATE GENERATION between people.
You can't get CONSERVATIVES to THINK OUR WAY if you call them rednecks or bastards.
you have to PERSUADE THEM & EMBRACE them... because CONSERVATIVES are BASICALLY FRIGHTENED PEOPLE.
that's what makes them CONSERVATIVE.
I mean... we have to ENCOURAGE them, not throw verbal rocks at them... even LISTENING to AAR is a departure for them...
why freak them out? they're bloody LISTENING for a reason.
so we have to ENCOURAGE their LIBERAL INSTINCTS.

NEWSFLASH: Allegations of Corruption Not "Guaranteed Career-Ender"
By Paul Kiel - September 18, 2006, 9:05 AM
Someone please explain this to me. The Washington Post has a front page story this morning headlined, "Corruption That Shook Capitol Isn't Rattling Elections" with the subhead, "Abramoff Case and Others Not Necessarily a Key Issue."
As an example of one of those races where corruption isn't "rattling" the election, the author, Blaine Harden, cites Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT), who's been hammered for his close dealings with Jack Abramoff:
In an interview, the senator said his polling shows that most voters regard the "Abramoff deal" as merely a political liability and not a damning verdict on his character. Several pollsters and observers of politics in this state agreed with that assessment. The controversy is almost certainly the main reason Burns is in a competitive race this year, but by no means is it a guaranteed career-ender.
Yet Burns, an 18-year veteran of the Senate, is in a fight for his political life largely because of the Abramoff scandal. Somehow the Post's story and other "Corruption's Not The Issue It's Cracked Up To Be" pieces that I've seen over the past month make the argument that this is a disappointment for Democrats.
Is it just me, or is there a double standard here?
