Bush Cheney Regime: Star Chambers in the U.S.? (continued)
by AL MARTIN

Bush Cheney Regime: Star Chambers in the U.S.? One of the first judicial laws that would be struck down, as it was in Germany, for instance, is the ability of a citizen to have quashed or object to hearsay evidence.

The reason, of course, being is: What good is it to have an "Inform on your Neighbor" program (Neighborhood Watch) if you can't ultimately use the information to prosecute?

What good is it to maintain a list of all adult citizens to assess their security threat by what they look at on the Internet, what publications they subscribe to, what protest groups they belong to, have they ever demonstrated, have they ever publicly criticized "the Leader" or the regime’s policies?

Why even do this if, at the end, you cant use this information for anything? That is the whole reason of setting up a structure to assess the threat citizens represent to a regime that intends to become a dictatorship and to set up a domestic intelligence program a la our new National Security Director.

As was the case in our Mother England, as many conspiracy theorists would like to put out: there is the connection between the Bushonian Cabal and the British Crown. Yet another connection, also from the mother country, as it were, here we bring back into the United States, the formation of secret star chambers.

The origin of a Star Chamber is really from the 17th century. It was to allow the Crown to act through extra-judicial procedure in defense of the Realm. Members of the Star Chamber were always those most loyal to the Crown, whose names could be kept secret. This was done in great secrecy in Britain. Thus you had secret trials, secret convictions, and secret executions.

I got an e-mail newsletter from the diocese with the details of Katharine Jefferts Schori's investiture as Presiding Bishop, which will take place November 5. It is open to the public, but tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis. I've posted the specifics on my religious left blog.

I won't be able to attend, so I'm not going to try to get tickets for myself, but since this is a historic event (first female Presiding Bishop) I thought I should pass along the details to whoever might be interested.

I am a conspiracy theory skeptic simply because I don't believe that more than one person can keep a secret and even then the odds are stacked against silence.

The opposite is true, too. I am inclined to believe in theories that suggest that people have spoken out-of-school.

Cheney knew what the Brits were up to when he initiated a highly unusual and out-of-character telephone conference call with reporters on August 9. It appears (so far) that Cheney was privy to the Brit's information JUST PRIOR to using it for his and his Neocon buddies' political purposes.

If it is true that the Brits kept their cards close to their vest until the last reasonable moment, it can only be because the Brits don't trust the White House with sensitive information.

Why?

Because some unscrupulous staffer would use it to polish his own star?

Nope. It appears that the risk exists even if only Bush and Cheney have the information.

During my lifetime, the Executive Branch has often complained that the Legislative Branch has released sensitive information for political gain.

Why would a similar risk not exist with the Executive Branch? It only requires people who put their party and their own hidden agenda ahead of the integrity and trust of the offices they hold.

This country has a lot of problems. Health care is among the most pressing and difficult to solve because of the harm that it is doing to people and business and the ability to compete with other nations.

But even health care takes a back seat to ridding the country of the Neocons. They have rocketed themselves to the top of the priority list. Nothing in my lifetime has done so much harm to this country in such short time as having the Neocons in positions of power.

You must know by now I think your about the funniest guy around here.

you get more bang per buvck and a very high joke to gutlaugh ratio..

but sometimes you seem to fall a bit short. like the bit about conspiracy theories...

OK, the set up was a bit long for some folk's tase.

that's ok, I think of longer jokes as more artful and stylistic. I think it'd be great to hear you tell a 5 or ten minute story...

bu this one?

well, maybe the humor was a little too subtle...or maybe I'm just too obtuse to get the punchline?

;P

But, seriously now folks, honestly, I agree with what you're saying. we gotta get rid of theose bastards. I hope someday the country will look at the NeoCon's use of terror and say `that dog won't hunt no more.

It's a damned shame only a slight sliver of our population really even cares about such things as the pentagon nixing the neocon's use of A bombs on Iran.

talk about ironic thinking...using a nuke to `discourgar nuclear development...when I think that conundrum through, I am left with the inexcapable conclusion that Iran's nuclear program is only an excuse to make war with them.

At least that is the official story.

A prety good amount of people don't actually believe it.

And there are way too many of the `It couldn't happen here' crowd. Folks who think an American would not abuse the elective process, whether by voter suppression or voter fraud. they have faith that the powers that be would agressively investigate any charges of the like.

they just don't get how partisan the neocons are.

let alone consider how damaging the `win at any cost' with us or against us' philospohy onf the right is to our elections, let alone our liberties.

It is rather an indictment of the capacity of the average individual to nurse a grudge fueled by spite, delusion and/or denial.

(And to think: buyer's remorse will soon make Bush much like Nixon -- people who voted for Bush, specially in aught-four, will vehemently disavow their vote. No one likes being associated w/the stink of a loser.)

Course, then there's you.

You appear not to much care that Bush is fucking up everywhere a body turns. Not your concern.

Just so long's you can goad people you despise, you're happy as dung beetle wallowing inna cow pie.

Your gleeful bellicose schadenfreude at having a president who is a transparent failure in charge of the country who, to your immense delight, outrages people you evidently despise, says something about you.

Two points:

Agreed, neocons are a whole nuther animal. Neocons played "Goldwater conservatives" and "libertarians" and "fiscal conservatives" for suckers.

The whole country got hauled up in the net of conservatives not knowing (or caring, since it allowed them to temporarily stick it liberals) that neocons didn't have their best interests in mind. Neocons serve the interests of neocons, first, foremost and always.

Re: neocons as anarchists

Don't see that at all. Neocons are ideological authoritarian militaristic revolutionaries, imo, in similar fashion to how the men of the Confederacy were desperate-gambler revolutionaries (preventive war w/the northern states) or the ideological Trotskyists were revolutionaries.

The problem, it seems to me, is that this aspect of the neocon's character has not been universally acknowledged.

Bill Kristol, e.g., should find refuge nowhere in decent society w/o being condemned for the reckless chickenhawk ideological (and demonstrably wrong) bastard that he is.

And yet he's not. Kristol is happily ensconsed on FOX fucking News and at the Weekly Standard, still spouting simple-minded militaristic bullshit (invade Iran! invade Iran!) and being taken as a "credible authority".

On what, I often wonder?

A "credible authority" on fucking up the world while taking no responsibility for it?

A "credible authority" on covering your ass and making excuses and passing the buck, all while helping paint U.S. foreign policy into such a corner as to make *more* unnecessary wars inevitable?

A "credible authority" on sending young kids off to kill and die and consigning innocent people to being killed in the crossfire unnecessarily merely b/c Kristol's intellectual vanity is so extreme that he cannot conceive of the possibility that his "big idea" is organically doomed to failure?

(sigh)

I will try to explain a basic and (I thought) commonly-understood truth for the umpteenth time.

Being elected is not a certain indicator of competency, honesty or anything else other than being an indicator of being elected. Period.

DNA tests have freed plenty of prisoners convicted by a jury of their peers. That, ladies and gentlemen, is a vote made by INFORMED people. And still they can blow it.

The winner of the Superbowl is not the absolute "best" team. It is the team that won the games on the days that they counted.

Holding the record for catching the largest fish of a particular species is not an indicator of being the best fisherman of that type of fish.

Winning an automobile race is not an indication that you were driving the fastest race car.

If you STILL do not understand how this works, try this on for size...

Half of the doctors say that your leg must be amputated or you will die. The other half of the doctors say that they can save your life AND your leg.

You are given two choices;

1.) You may decide whether to remove your leg or keep your leg.

2.) You can put it to a vote of the American people.

Pick #1 or #2. If you pick #1, take your "he was elected twice" crap and shove it back up your ass.

Posted by: Crank Bait at August 12, 2006 3:34 PM

What ever happened to broadcast TV?

I'm too cheap to pay for cable or satellite...

that may change when the NFL season starts...but that's not the point of my bitch right now...

It used to be that you could usually count on the networks to broadcast something remotely interesting

Aside from the PBS I'm watching, the highlight of today's viewing experience appears to be a Pauly Shore movie, Bio-dome...otherwise, you have baseball, women's basketball, golf and nascar...

and of course, 3 or 4 channels worth of infomercials at any given time.

sure, the gut of cable channels has effected the local broadcast market, but I still have a feeling the roots to this issue go back to Reagan's deregulation.

I have a feeling those infomercials count toward the local broadcaster's quota of `educational ' programming.

anyway, I feel that there should be a limit to just how many infomercials a station can play per day, and there should be a law restricting their broadcast to only the wee hours of the morning...or, even better to times when I am not awake.

###########

I just saw an ad for an internet and cell phone based oven.

how long till the terrorist hack into our ovens and burn everyone's thanksgiving turkeys?

why hasn't done anything about THAT obvious threat to our American way of life?

There is at least one Anonymous whom I believe to be sincere in his [dr adverb, dr adverb, dr adverb] reactionary hyperventilating on behalf of the [dr adverb, dr adverb, dr adverb] uncomplicated man-child-in-chief.

The Anonymous likes to repeat a lot of stupid stuff ad nauseum as if repetition will gold plate the stupid stuff with truth; constantly citing the most recent two presidential elections as if they were endorsements of Bush from God himself is one of them.

Clearly, the "will of the people" has got it wrong on many occasions.

That is why I say to the Anonymous, "If you truly believe in the infallibility of the majority, in the wisdom of the majority and of the righteousness of the majority, then you can quit making decisions for yourself. Just canvass some folks and do whatever the majority suggests."

Truth and the Net by Cory Doctorow

Trusting what you read on the internet is a dangerous prospect, but it beats the alternative. At least on the internet, you get to choose your bias.

You can't trust what you read online. You can't trust what you read in the paper. You can't trust what you see on TV, or hear on the radio. You can't trust what your friend swears her brother's girlfriend said is true.

You can't trust anything – not with the gospel, bet-your-life trust that you reserve for things like gravity and death and your family.

You never could.

Pa. Guard soldier dies in Ariz.
On border-patrol duty, Kirsten Fike, described as being fit, collapsed. An autopsy is set for today.
By Bonnie L. Cook
Inquirer Staff Writer
A Pennsylvania Army National Guard soldier who died after she collapsed while deployed on a border-patrol mission in the Arizona desert will undergo an autopsy today, a medical official said.

Specialist Kirsten Fike, 36, of Bear Lake, Warren County, was among 500 National Guard volunteers made available by Gov. Rendell for work with Operation Jump Start, the border-sealing initiative set in motion recently by President Bush.

Fike, a mother and former member of the U.S. Air Force, joined the National Guard June 12, said Army spokesman Lt. Jay Ostrich.

She was deployed on a two-week training mission Aug. 5 and was two hours into her first assignment Wednesday when she collapsed in 104-degree heat at a desert outpost near Yuma, Ostrich said. She was hospitalized and died on Thursday.

Fike was one of 60 volunteers assigned to the task from Detachment 1, 28th Military Police Company, based in Greensburg, Pa.

The native of northwestern Pennsylvania was helping three other soldiers reattach camouflage netting used as cover along the border when she became ill. Ostrich said a combat medic treated her for heat stroke. She was airlifted to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where she was admitted in critical condition, said spokeswoman Machele Headington.

Just another false, photo-op....like Bush is going to read anything without pictures in it...and by a French writer! How dumb do they think we are? Nevermind, we know...

CRAWFORD, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush quoted French existential writer Albert Camus to European leaders a year and a half ago, and now he's read one of his most famous works: "The Stranger.

White House spokesman Tony Snow said Friday that Bush, here on his Texas ranch enjoying a 10-day vacation from Washington, had made quick work of the Algerian-born writer's 1946 novel -- in English.

The US president, often spoofed as an intellectual lightweight, quoted Camus in a February 21, 2005 speech in Brussels praising the US-Europe alliance and urging other nations to help Washington spread democracy in the world.

"We know there are many obstacles, and we know the road is long. Albert Camus said that 'freedom is a long-distance race.' We're in that race for the duration," Bush said in those remarks.

Its the main word in any sentence. Don't even think of writing anything unless your noun leads the way. Clear and simple.

tudy: Immigrants Not Hurting U.S. Jobs

August 10, 2006 12:38 p.m. EST

Nidhi Sharma - All Headline News Staff Writer
Washington D.C. (AHN) - A new study released on Thursday indicates that a massive increase in immigration since 1990 has not hurt employment prospects for American workers.
The report comes on the heels of Congress and the entire country's heated debated on the immigration policy - an issue which is front and center in this fall's midterm congressional elections.
Rakesh Kochhar, who authored the study from the Pew Hispanic Center told the AP that there has been apparently no concrete evidence that increases in immigration led to higher unemployment among Americans. Factors such as economic growth played a larger role than immigration in setting the job market for Americans.
The study, however, did not take into consideration the factor of whether wages were affected by immigration. Those in favor of tightening the immigration policies argue that immigrant workers decrease wages for American workers - in a group of less qualified workers.
Immigration supporters are of the opinion that foreign workers are often employed in those jobs that Americans don't want and won't take.

The arrests led the Bush administration to put the U.S. on its highest threat alert for flights headed to the United States from Britain. Additionally, all other flights were raised to the second-highest alert level.
The suspects placed calls to several cities in the United States before their arrests, according to two other U.S. counterterrorism officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. Investigators ultimately concluded the calls did not point to threats within the United States, the officials said.
At least some of the calls were placed to people in New York, Washington, Chicago and Detroit, one official said.
The FBI is expecting the arrests and searches of homes and computers in England to generate another round of leads on possible U.S. ties.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff also sought to assure Americans that there is no evidence of plotters in the United States. But he cited the possibility of other terrorists or sympathizers, saying, "so I'm not prepared to let my guard down

Som Patidar - All Headline News Staff Writer

Santa Cruz, CA (AHN) - Denice Dee Denton, 46, chancellor of the University of California-Santa Cruz died on Saturday after jumping from a 43-story building in San Francisco.

The Medical Examiner's office and a university spokesman confirmed her death, though the cause was still under investigation, AP reported.

UC President Robert Dynes said in a statement that she was an accomplished and passionate scholar whose life and work demonstrated a deep commitment to public service.

According to the news reports, Denton was considered one of the youngest and first openly lesbian chancellors in the UC system history. She was appointed chancellor in 2004 after serving as the dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Washington.

Pacific "Dead Zone" Worse Than Thought

Portland, Ore. - The oxygen-starved "dead zone" along the Pacific Coast that is causing massive crab and fish die-offs is worse than initially thought, scientists said.

Weather, not pollution, appears to be the culprit, scientists said, and no relief is in sight. However, some said there is no immediate sign of long-term damage to the crab fishery in the dead zone, a 70-mile stretch of water along the Continental Shelf between Florence and Lincoln City.

Oregon State University scientists looking for weather changes that could reverse the situation aren't finding them. They say levels of dissolved oxygen critical to marine life are the lowest since the first dead zone was identified in 2002. It has returned every year.

Strong upwelling winds pushed a low-oxygen pool of deep water toward shore, suffocating marine life, said Jane Lubchenco, a professor of marine biology at OSU.

The Price of American
Preeminence
As admitted above, calculating the exact
price of armed forces capable of maintaining
American military preeminence today and
extending it into the future requires more
detailed analysis than this broad study can
provide. We have advocated a force posture
and service structure that diverges
significantly both from current plans and
alternatives advanced in other studies. We
believe it is necessary to increase slightly
the personnel strength of U.S. forces – many
of the missions associated with patrolling
the expanding American security perimeter
are manpower-intensive, and planning for
major theater wars must include the ability
for politically decisive campaigns including
extended post-combat stability operations.
Also, this expanding perimeter argues
strongly for new overseas bases and forward
operating locations to facilitate American
political and military operations around the
world.
an expanding security perimeter, we believe
it essential to retain sufficient forces based
in the continental United States capable of
rapid reinforcement and, if needed, applying
massive combat power to stabilize a region
in crisis or to bring a war to a successful
conclusion. There should be a strong
strategic synergy between U.S. forces
overseas and in a reinforcing posture: units
operating abroad are an indication of
American geopolitical interests and
leadership, provide significant military
power to shape events and, in wartime,
create the conditions for victory when
reinforced. Conversely, maintaining the
ability to deliver an unquestioned “knockout
punch” through the rapid introduction of
stateside units will increase the shaping
power of forces operating overseas and the
vitality of our alliances. In sum, we see an
enduring need for large-scale American
forces.

But every day is different. Sometimes one has to wait for the muse ... but if she doesn't show up you just have to start the job.

I usually don't spend too much time with my posts on the blog. I just try to make a point or ask a question etc. But I try to be careful because I don't want to be misunderstood.

Every now and then I post a rant and in no time flat the post is so long its cut off - that always comes as a huge surprise to me lol - fortunately, it doesn't happen that often.

No matter how much I struggle with this fact, George Bush is a human being, too. No matter how far he has strayed from his humanity and no matter how he seems to revel in the callous killing of innocent human beings and the destruction of a country that was no threat to ours, the same Universal Creator who created us, created him. The same Creator who created the babies in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Israel, created George. The same Creator that made my darling, faithful, and sweet boy, Casey, created George! It is an abhorrent fact, but fundamentally true.

US expects Cuba's power transfer to fail

Saturday, August 12, 2006

WASHINGTON, USA (Reuters): Cuba's Communist government may redouble its efforts to assert control and assure the successful transition from Fidel to Raul Castro, but the plan won't work in the end, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

"While we might be at a moment of great change, we might also be at a moment of actually the regime hardening as it attempts to assert its control," Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Shannon told reporters.

"Ultimately, this transfer won't work," Shannon said. "Ultimately, there is no political figure inside of Cuba who matches Fidel Castro.

"When a rotor comes off a helicopter, it crashes. When a supreme leader disappears from an authoritarian regime, the authoritarian regime flounders."

---

"oh," added shannon, " plus we been messing with every possible aspect of the power transfer we could get our hands on. yep. exploding cigars and all. trust us, Cuba'll have a national league team by years end."

Meanwhile, as the conflict in Lebanon dominates the headlines, the United Nations Security Council has finally passed Resolution 1696, threatening Iran with sanctions unless that country halts _ by month's end _ uranium enrichment and other efforts to develop the nuclear bomb. Iran denounced the United Nations for even this relatively mild warning. The Iranian ambassador to the U.N., Javad Zarif, said that the resolution was "destructive and totally unwarranted," and could "only exacerbate the situation." Another Iranian official said that if the sanctions were imposed, oil prices would hit $200 a barrel.

Whether actions of a more serious nature will follow is anyone's guess.

It is fair to wonder whether the bribery and other corruption that hindered U.N. action to contain Iraq are now going on in the case of Iran. Many non-Iranian companies have investments in that country, with enough clout (money) to shape their countries' U.N. policies.

Ahmadinejad's remarks also underscore the folly of imposing a "cease-fire" before Israel significantly weakens Hezbollah's capacity to attack Israeli citizens. An immediate cease-fire would not be about peace. As Ahmadinejad has so transparently revealed, it would be a step on the way to the destruction of Israel.

Source: U.S., U.K. at odds over timing of arrests
British wanted to continue surveillance on terror suspects, official says

By Aram Roston, Lisa Myers, and the NBC News Investigative Unit
NBC News
Updated: 19 minutes ago
LONDON - NBC News has learned that U.S. and British authorities had a significant disagreement over when to move in on the suspects in the alleged plot to bring down trans-Atlantic airliners bound for the United States.

A senior British official knowledgeable about the case said British police were planning to continue to run surveillance for at least another week to try to obtain more evidence, while American officials pressured them to arrest the suspects sooner. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the case.

In contrast to previous reports, the official suggested an attack was not imminent, saying the suspects had not yet purchased any airline tickets. In fact, some did not even have passports.

The source did say, however, that police believe one U.K.-based suspect was ready to conduct a "dry run." British authorities had wanted to let him go forward with part of the plan, but the Americans balked.

At the White House, a top aide to President Bush denied the account.

"There was unprecedented cooperation and coordination between the U.S., the U.K. and Pakistani officials throughout the case," said Frances Townsend, Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, "and we worked together to protect our citizens from harm while ensuring that we gathered as much info as possible to bring the plotters to justice. There was no disagreement between U.S. and U.K. officials."

Another U.S. official, however, acknowledges there was disagreement over timing. Analysts say that in recent years, American security officials have become edgier than the British in such cases because of missed opportunities leading up to 9/11.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian thieves used a net and rope to haul an ATM cash dispenser through a glass wall and down a flight of stairs, only to discover they had grabbed a check deposit machine by mistake.

The three robbers fled after realizing the failure of their plan, in which they used a pick-up truck and a lorry to yank the machine from its moorings, the Star newspaper said on Thursday.

Automated teller machines (ATMs) have recently been the focus of a spate of robberies or robbery attempts in Malaysia.

In one case, thieves loaded an ATM onto a truck but abandoned it about 5 km (3 miles) away when they discovered it had no cash.

'Clearer timeline emerges' for New York Times' wiretapping scoop; Publication was discussed on eve of 2004 election

RAW STORY

"A clearer timeline emerges for the paper's scoop on wiretapping," New York Times public editor Byron Calame will be revealing in a column slated for Sunday's edition, RAW STORY has found.

Executive editor Bill Keller tells the paper's ombudmsman that "internal discussions" about publishing a story on domestic wiretapping by the National Security Agency ended up "dragging on for weeks" before the November 2nd, 2004 election.

In January, Calame complained that he had encountered "unusual difficulty" in trying to determine when exactly the paper learned of the surveillance that hadn't been properly approved by Congress.

"The New York Times's explanation of its decision to report, after what it said was a one-year delay, that the National Security Agency is eavesdropping domestically without court-approved warrants was woefully inadequate," wrote Calame. "And I have had unusual difficulty getting a better explanation for readers, despite the paper's repeated pledges of greater transparency."

"For the first time since I became public editor, the executive editor and the publisher have declined to respond to my requests for information about news-related decision-making," Calame continued in January.

"If Times editors hoped the brief mention of the one-year delay and the omitted sensitive information would assure readers that great caution had been exercised in publishing the article, I think they miscalculated," Calame wrote.

"The climactic discussion about whether to publish was right on the eve of the election," Keller tells Calame.

According to Keller, after holding multiple "pre-election discussions" with managing editor Jill Abramson, Washington bureau chief Philip Taubman, editor Rebecca Corbett, and often reporter James Risen, he alone made the final decision to "hold" the article.

SEOUL, South Korea - Dog meat is increasingly popular among women in North Korea because the traditional Korean delicacy is believed to be good for the skin, a pro-Pyongyang newspaper in Japan reported.

Dog meat has long been regarded as a stamina food in both Koreas, widely consumed on hot summer days in particular.

North Korea is believed to have a greater variety of dishes with dog meat, known in the North as "sweet meat." South Korean gourmets who have tried the delicacy in the North, say Northern dishes taste better.

"Sweet meat has various vitamins, including Vitamin A and B and is good for digestion problems and fatigue," the Choson Sinbo newspaper said on its Web site seen in Seoul.

The paper quoted a cook at a dog meat restaurant in the North's capital, Pyongyang, as saying an increasing number of women are visiting the restaurant.

"Customers get convinced about the efficacy of sweet meat when they see the skin of our employees and cooks," the paper quoted the chef, Ryu Jong Mok, 47, as saying.

The paper said Ryu also has "resilient and fine" skin.

Dog meat is also widely consumed in South Korea, especially among middle-aged men on belief that it's good for stamina and virility. But women in the South are usually less willing to try the food.

Earlier this week, a poll showed that more than 35 percent of South Korean dog owners also eat dog soup.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

Activists regularly criticize the practice and call for bans on eating dog meat.

Police hunt 'two dozen' terror cells in Britain

· Direct link to 7 July atrocity, says Pakistan
· BA chief attacks airport chaos

Jamie Doward, Ned Temko, Mark Townsend, Urmee Khan and Antony Barnett
Sunday August 13, 2006
The Observer

The full extent of the terror threat facing Britain became apparent last night as security sources revealed that 'up to two dozen' terror investigations were operating across the country and that a number of suspects associated with last week's plot to bring down 10 airliners remained at large.

Pakistani intelligence sources alleged that one of the men arrested in connection with the bomb plot had been held following the London terror attack on 7 July last year. British security sources also linked the present investigation to that atrocity, saying the operation that led to Thursday's arrests began days after the 7 July attack. There are also claims that voicemails discovered after the first attack link the two events.

Pakistani authorities are still searching for at least one suspect thought to be involved in the plot to blow up the planes over the Atlantic using liquid-based bombs. US officials estimate as many as 50 may have been involved.

Two British airlines yesterday criticised airport authorities for failing to manage new security measures smoothly. As passengers faced a third day of delays, the chief executives of British Airways and Ryanair, Willie Walsh and Michael O'Leary, said that airport-owner BAA must tackle the ever-lengthier queues.

On the negative side, there is the wedding night, during which the bride must pay the piper, so to speak, by facing for the first time the terrible experience of sex. At this point, dear reader, let me concede one shocking truth. Some young women actually anticipate the wedding night ordeal with curiosity and pleasure! Beware such an attitude! A selfish and sensual husband can easily take advantage of such a bride. One cardinal rule of marriage should never be forgotten: GIVE LITTLE, GIVE SELDOM, AND ABOVE ALL, GIVE GRUDGINGLY. Otherwise what could have been a proper marriage could become an orgy of sexual lust.

At least some of the calls were placed to people in New York, Washington, Chicago and Detroit, one official said. Letter from London

London
I THOUGHT LEAVING ISRAEL for London would make me safer. I came via Zurich, and the mood in the airport before takeoff was both calm and creepy. I noticed on the monitors that the entire day's flights to Heathrow were suddenly posted as either canceled or delayed. In the Swiss Air lounge, passengers gathered around television sets as reports came in that British authorities had thwarted a plot by terrorists to blow up multiple aircraft in midair.

I felt I had been here before. On the morning of 9/11, I was on a United Airlines flight out of Washington's Dulles airport. We had been in the air maybe 30 minutes, bound for the west coast, when the pilot announced that the president had de clared a state of national emergency. Our flight was first diverted to Pittsburgh and then suddenly, without explanation, to Indianapolis. I would only learn later about United Airlines Flight 93, apparently just ahead of us, which had crashed in an open field near Shanksville, Pa.

Staged Shots from Lebanon

i have been working in lebanon since all this started, and seeing the behavior of many of the lebanese wire service photographers has been a bit unsettling. while hajj has garnered a lot of attention for his doctoring of images digitally, whether guilty or not, i have been witness to the daily practice of directed shots, one case where a group of wire photogs were choreographing the unearthing of bodies, directing emergency workers here and there, asking them to position bodies just so, even remove bodies that have already been put in graves so that they can photograph them in peoples arms. these photographers have come away with powerful shots, that required no manipulation digitally, but instead, manipulation on a human level, and this itself is a bigger ethical problem.

whatever the case is—lack of training, a personal drive as a photographer to show what is happening to your country in as powerful a way as possible, or all out competitiveness, i think that the onus is on the wire services themselves, because they act as the employer/filter of their photogs work. standards should be in place or else the rest of us end up paying the price. and i’m not against the idea of local wire photographers, but after seeing it over and over for the past month, i think it is something that is worth addressing. while i walk away from a situation like that, one wire shooter sets up a situation, and the rest of them follow.......

Is an armament sickening U.S. soldiers?

A shell coated with depleted uranium pierces a tank like a hot knife through butter, exploding on impact into a charring inferno. As tank armor, it repels artillery assaults. It also leaves behind a fine radioactive dust with a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

Quake Money Used of UK Plot

KARACHI: A UK-based Islamic charity organisation remitted a huge amount of money to three individuals in three different bank accounts in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, in December last year with the sole purpose of helping its recipients and their organisations carry out the aircraft bombing plan in the UK, insider sources told Daily Times yesterday.

An investigation carried out by Daily Times showed that Muslim Charity of UK remitted not so long ago a huge amount of money under the head of “earthquake relief” to the accounts of three individuals in three different banks — Saudi Pak Bank, Standard Chartered and Habib Bank Ltd. One of these banks is UK based and has its presence in Azad Kashmir because of a huge number of British citizens of Kashmir origin in UK. The money was transferred from UK to banks in Azad Kashmir through Barclays Plc..

Two of the recipients of the transaction are British citizens of Kashmir origin while the third is an Islamabad-based builder, also of Kashmir origin. They were arrested in the last two weeks at three different places in the country. One of them was arrested in Karachi, the “builder” was arrested in Islamabad while the place of the arrest of the third suspect is still not known. There are no available details about these three suspects with regard to their links with organisations such as Al Qaeda or Lashkar-e-Taiba or both.

Hosed again
by George Ochenski
More than coincidence to BP’s Alaska closure?

Some might think it’s just serendipitous that British Petroleum (BP), owners of the Alaska Pipeline, happened to “discover severe corrosion” and shut the pipeline down precisely as the nation writhes under record high prices for gasoline and diesel. Then again, given the blind eyes the Bush administration and the Republican-dominated Congress have turned toward any regulation of energy corporations—and the record profits those companies are greedily reaping as energy prices soar—one might wonder if there’s more than just blind coincidence at work here.

For those who weren’t yet born then—or for whom time has dimmed the details—a brief review of the history of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline may prove useful. Massive oil deposits were discovered on Alaska’s North Slope in 1968 and by 1970 a consortium of energy corporations had settled on building a huge pipeline to move the black gold to market. Getting the oil from the wells in ice-locked Prudhoe Bay to the southern Alaska port of Valdez, however, presented one of the greatest engineering and construction challenges in the nation’s history.

Since the 800-mile pipeline would transect the Alaskan wilderness, cross 34 major rivers, 800 streams and three mountain ranges, environmental damage was a hot issue. But then, as now, the populace was bluffed by politicians and their corporate cronies into believing an energy crisis had been caused by the Arab oil embargo, and that increasing domestic oil supplies by building the controversial pipeline was “in the national interest.”

In November 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew broke a deadlocked Senate with his vote to pass the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act, which sought to ensure the pipeline would be “constructed promptly without further administrative or judicial delay or impediment.” The federal grant of right-of-way, however, required the energy consortium to “employ all practicable means and measures to preserve and protect the environment” during construc

Posted by: chIMPEACHer at August 12, 2006 9:37 PM

and values with economic practicalities and technical capabilities.” Construction began in April 1974 and continued at a frenzied pace to the 1977 completion of the pipeline.

As a young mountaineer in the mid-’70s, I had the opportunity to spend two summers in Alaska on major climbing expeditions and got a firsthand look at the pipeline being built—and oh what a look it was! One day I watched a string of D-9 Cats march blade-to-blade into a large river and literally move it across the flood plain to a new channel. Maybe they were balancing the impacts to environmental amenities and values—or maybe they weren’t. It really didn’t matter because nothing was standing in the way of the pipeline construction. Helicopters buzzed overhead continuously while trucks moved 3 million tons of materials into the state to build 29 construction camps and 14 temporary airfields. Money flowed like water and when all was said and done, some $8 billion dollars had been spent to employ 70,000 construction workers to build the line across the frozen north. As one friend commented, he hadn’t seen anything like it since being in a war zone in Vietnam.

Finally, in 1977, the consortium sent its first oil to Valdez. Not coincidentally, engineers also developed a device called a “pipeline pig” to travel down the pipeline using ultrasonic transducers to measure and record the thickness of the pipeline’s walls to identify any areas of corrosion before they became significant problems.

Now, nearly 30 years later, BP has just discovered corrosion so severe that it requires shutting the pipeline down. According to the latest news reports, the company hopes it can have the line back up and running by January of next year. In the meantime, 400,000 barrels of oil a day—8 percent of U.S. daily consumption—will stay in the ground as oil prices skyrocket higher and consumers get hosed at the pump.

All this raises the question: What happened to the ultrasonic pipeline pigs? Did they suddenly fail to do their job after having performed well for nearly 30 years? Or are there other factors at work—like declining volumes of oil that make expensive pipeline maintenance or replacement considerably less attractive?

Posted by: chIMPEACHer at August 12, 2006 9:39 PM

Good, ja.

Just got home from work a little bit ago. Got 1 week off and then quite a bit of hours for the last of the full timer's vacations.

Hey, I can use the money right now!!!

Posted by: toniD at August 12, 2006 9:40 PM

Consider that in 1988 pipeline throughput averaged more than 2 million barrels of oil per day. By 1997, however, pump stations 2, 6, 8 and 10 had been taken off-line due to reductions in flow-through. A year later, the volume was down to 1 million barrels a day; now, in 2006, it’s less than half that.

Whatever happened to the pipeline pigs may be a mystery, but there’s no mystery concerning the declining condition of the pipeline itself. In 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground and spilled 257,000 barrels of crude oil into Prince William Sound in one of the nation’s worst environmental disasters. Earlier this year, BP spilled more than 200,000 barrels on the North Slope from leaking pipelines that took five days for the company to discover.

In May, National Public Radio reported that BP had known about corrosion at the site of the leak since 1998, but had not invested in necessary maintenance to correct the problems. Meanwhile, oil industry analysts interviewed for the report suggested the company was cutting maintenance to “maximize returns.” Astoundingly, there are no regulations on how often pipeline companies must do inspection and maintenance on their facilities.

Last month, BP announced its profits rose 22 percent to $6.118 billion in the second quarter. As Congressman Ed Markey, D-Mass., said following BP’s profit statement: “BP used to stand for British Petroleum, now it just stands for Bloated Profits. While American families get tipped upside down and have their savings shaken out of their pockets at the gas pump, the Bush-Cheney team devises even more ways to line Big Oil’s pockets.” And that, fellow Montanans, pretty much says all there is to say about why we’re getting hosed again.

When not lobbying the Montana Legislature, George Ochenski is rattling the cage of the political establishment as a political analyst for the Independent. Contact Ochenski at opinion@missoulanews.com

Women; The double standard that I refuse to uphold.

‘That guy has a nice butt,’ ‘He’s so carved,’ ‘he’s so buff’ ‘sooo fine and sexy body’ and they could go on and on with more and more expletives, more and more graphic, to the everyday comments anyone within earshot observes listening to women conversations. We’ve all heard them, everyone of us. So what’s the problem? Disrespect? Of men. True, men disrespect women, and that’s no news, and everyone knows it. But women are much much worse. If we were to say the exact same comments, (gender roles reversed) We would be, (and are) labeled pigs, "typical male", scum of the earth, etc... If 90% of us hung up pictures of topless girls, and scantily clad girls in our highschool lockers, like 90% of all highschool girls do, but male pictures, we would again be labeled again as a chauvinistic pigs, we were disrespecting women, we only wanted one thing, etc... Yet women do this, with no reproach. Basically if we treated, and spoke openly exactly like women do about guys, we would be labeled as we are, yet thousands times worse. Double standard. So, to counter it, we should do exactly what you’ve been claiming you demand. Equal rights. We will now judge you (girls) like you would judge us, if we made similar comments. A significant percentage of us guys will NEVER will falter to the derogatory level that women speak of men. Much, much higher than the percentage that one will ever find, of women refusing to make comments of such about out gender. But we should and will point out the inequality, the double standard, and our personal disappointment upon someone that is so focused on equal rights, and yet refuses participate. Women truly want to have their cake and eat it to. Yet, if men do try to uphold equal rights and point out these belittling comments, women will loath and us. WHY??? Because we tried to treat women the same as they treat men, if we made similar comments! Equal Rights? You (girls) claim you want to be treated equally, but that's just not true. You want special treatment, and to do anything you want to, and not be responsible for it. Women want the rights, but not the responsibility. You want the ability to disrespect guys, but not suffer the lab

As long as she doesn't try a career in sign painting, it won't matter if she can spell.

I have some friends who for years have photographed signs having misspellings and/or grammatical errors on them. The have albums filled with boo-boos from everywhere.

In the nearest town to where I lived on St. Croix there was a little Arab sundry food store. Ahmed had someone paint a sign for him. Forever after we called it The Conveyance Store because conveyance is the closest actual word to the misspelling of convenience that was on the sign.

It said The Convieance Store. Ahmed didn't seem to care.

Another Arab store down the street sold unwanted video tapes and cassette audio tapes and clothing seconds and costume jewelry and whatever crap he could buy for next to nothing. He had a sign on his porch roof that was at least forty feet long. It said, Mr. Cheap Bargain For Ever. We never knew for certain if he was Mr. Cheap (comma) known for bargaining infinitely or if he was Mr. Cheapbargainforever (which probably sounds more elegant in North Arabic).

Choosing whewre to buy your gas is truly a pick your poison type scenario.

None of them are good.

I default to Citco whenever I can because they are Venezuela. If I can't Citco, I go to BP because they give more money to Democrats, percentage wise.

But like I said, it's really like choosing between arsenic and cyanide. You still end up dead.

I am disgusted by their victimism. I would have understood if they had us slaves to revenge centuries of oppression. But they picked the vilest way: their predominion is clear for more than thirty years, but they will never stop to complain, because it is more satisfactory to command feigning to be submitted. Since the youngest age they are prey of maniacal hygienic-alimentary-healthy obsessions (which means, in particular, that they are disgusted from whatever is not something disgusting of theirs) and they are hysteric and inconstant, untrustful and generically unbearable, but they are able to nothing but criticize our life style, loading us with the faults of our stereotypes.

Well I love women when they meet the following criteria:

-They are hot.

-They like having sex with me and other women.

-They cook.

-They clean.

-They make babies, but only when it is convient. I don't use birth control because THIS GUY loves God so if we are just having sex and we don't want babies then her eggs better back the fuck away from my sperm.

Ultimately though most women do not meet those criteria. This one time I had a woman who met all the criteria but the last one and I had to smack a bitch because she got pregnant and I didn't want the kid. Luckily for me it turned out black so I was absolved from all blame. Also luckily for her I hit her so much she looked like a black person because of the bruises and swollen lips so she fitted in with her new family well, but damn. I can control myself why can't her? You know!

It takes at least 10 minutes and a large glass of orange juice to wash down all the pills _ morphine, methadone, a muscle relaxant, an antidepressant, a stool softener. Viagra for sexual dysfunction. Valium for his nerves.

Four hours later, Herbert Reed will swallow another 15 mg of morphine to cut the pain clenching every part of his body. He will do it twice more before the day is done.

Since he left a bombed-out train depot in Iraq, his gums bleed. There is more blood in his urine, and still more in his stool. Bright light hurts his eyes. A tumor has been removed from his thyroid. Rashes erupt everywhere, itching so badly they seem to live inside his skin. Migraines cleave his skull. His joints ache, grating like door hinges in need of oil.

There is something massively wrong with Herbert Reed, though no one is sure what it is. He believes he knows the cause, but he cannot convince anyone caring for him that the military's new favorite weapon has made him terrifyingly sick.

In the sprawling bureaucracy of the Department of Veterans Affairs, he has many caretakers. An internist, a neurologist, a pain-management specialist, a psychologist, an orthopedic surgeon and a dermatologist. He cannot function without his stupefying arsenal of medications, but they exact a high price.

"I'm just a zombie walking around," he says.

Reed believes depleted uranium has contaminated him and his life. He now walks point in a vitriolic war over the Pentagon's arsenal of it _ thousands of shells and hundreds of tanks coated with the metal that is radioactive, chemically toxic, and nearly twice as dense as lead.

A shell coated with depleted uranium pierces a tank like a hot knife through butter, exploding on impact into a charring inferno. As tank armor, it repels artillery assaults. It also leaves behind a fine radioactive dust with a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

Women also suck at computers.

It’s the same way that men suck at being happy when their best friend gets dumped and then has to rely on them for emotional support. That just doesn’t make the kind of sense to us.

Computers are that way for women.

You see, women don’t understand computers because they don’t understand the basics of cause and effect — that the one causes the other. It’s childlike in its simplicity, I know, but it’s absolutely true.

This backwards mentality applies to computers just as easily as it applies to every other aspect of a woman’s life, which she is right about to hopelessly fuck up yet again by doing the exact same thing and expecting it somehow to magically work this time.

I saw this in action just yesterday while waiting in line for an ATM at the bank. For some absurd reason, a woman had been put in charge of her own finances and had promptly lost her ATM card in the machine. She started frantically pressing buttons, expecting that at any moment something profoundly contrary to what had happened was about to happen. Guess what. It didn’t.

What I’m saying here is that men are better than women because every time a man drops a rock in to a ditch, he knows it’s going to fall. Women think that if they do it enough, it will turn into a Snicker’s bar.

Russian musicians returning from London after the Bolshoi Theatre's season face an overland journey because of the new UK cabin baggage ban on planes.

They will probably have to travel by rail via Paris, he added.

Not all men have money, good looks, talent, wit, charm, charisma, interesting stories, cultural insight, skills, athletic abilities, woman-attracting macho attitudes, an ability to eat an inhuman amount of food (or food based, non-toxic products), a sense of style, an easy going demeanor, a non-threatening posture, rich parents, or an in depth knowledge of anything and a desire to show it off. All men, however, are still men. That means they need to get laid.

So how do these men attract women? I’ll tell you how, by taking charge where women have failed for the last thirty years.

U.S. to roll out electronic passports By DAN CATERINICCHIA, AP Business Writer,
Fri Aug 11, 5:26 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Despite ongoing privacy concerns and legal disputes involving companies bidding on the project, the U.S. State Department plans to begin issuing smart chip-embedded passports to Americans as planned Monday.

Not even the foiled terror plot that heightened security checks at airports nationwide threatens to delay the rollout, the agency said. Any hitches in getting the technology to work properly could add even longer waits to travelers already facing lengthy security lines at airports.

what is it? a current of air? vibrating vocal chords? your own ear drum? something running in your head?

its all of these, but go still deeper... this sound is you vibrating. and who are you?

don't give me your name address and occupation,
you know thats just a mask, a front, a big act...who puts it on?...

who puts it on? your body? ha! what an act that is! and who puts THAT on?

your father and mother? did they put you on? come off it... you know very well who you are, though you wont admit it

deep in there, in the middle middle of your heart, you know it. and the you in you is the same as the you in me

you're not some sort of tourist just visiting in this world for a short time, you belong here, like the apple on the tree.

You don't know who you are, do you? you can't quite, get at your self just like the fingertip can't touch itself

and the teeth can't bite themselves and thats because you, the real, far in you, is what we call brahman, the Self of the universe

the witch than witch there is no witcher

The heart and foundation of all thats going on
you think you're going to die someday. yes, thats because, every now and then, you have to go "off" so that you can know that you're "on"
you can't have an up without a down, or a back without a front, a light day without a dark night,

the whole thing is pulse....

Posted by: Catharine at August 12, 2006 11:28 PM

Posted by: John Bigboote at August 12, 2006 11:30 PM

So what are you doing brahman? playing on and off...hide and seek with yourself, just passing eternal time with adventure.

you forget who you are really, every now and then you make like your just "john doe" or a "mary smith" or a butterfly, or a worm, or a star..

or that your lost in the middle of a big big world that isnt you, and that you don't understand and don't control.

of course! there has to be something else, something other, to bring out the feeling that you, are you!

and so that you can feel really you, that outside world has to seem strange, different, weird.

you old trixter. Deep down in you know the whole bit, and therefore what you want is a surprise

Posted by: Catharine at August 12, 2006 11:30 PM

And so you have to let things get out of control
you have to feel lost and lonely to know you as you. and so you play the thing out by inventing lusts and loves, fears and terrors,
gnawing anxieties and screaming meemies, LSD heebie jeebies

all so you can imagine "it's not really 'me', its IT that runs the show...

but, our secret is, as we say, Tat Tvam Asi
you are it. you are running the show, by not letting you right hand know what your left is doing.

by making like there's a whopping great split between what you do and what happens to you. this is what we call maya, the great illusion or lila, the play, the big act

Posted by: Catharine at August 12, 2006 11:32 PM

I'm sorry, but this lady with the two year old sounds utterly retarded.

Posted by: Meg at August 12, 2006 11:33 PM

And you don't just play your game with such simple elements as black and white, on and off, or life and death.

To seem as real as real can be, this world which you are playing must be so complicated, that you can't figure it out (especially if you're using figures to figure it)

and so between black and white there is the whole range of colors. between thunder and silence the whole scale of tones. and between something and nothing,

between a smashing fist in the face, and trying to touch the air, there are all the textures of feeling.. burning, throbbing, pushing, hugging, fondling, tickling, kissing, brushing,
and light wind on the skin.

your world is all these elements, elements of light and sound, taste, smell and touch, woven together in many dimensions upon the fabulous loom of your brain.

your brain, the most complicated thing in the world, a biocomputer, which you yourself grew without even thinking about it.

You have always been around for you, I, the self, is simply what there is and all that there is. All of us are rays from one center, tits on one sow, sounds on one flute, forever and ever
but it doesn't get monotonous, boring, because we keep forgetting it. we keep the on's on by putting off's between them

Posted by: Catharine at August 12, 2006 11:37 PM

How big is it? How long is on and how long off? (now, don't take these figures literally, for their purpose is merely to give an idea of vastness)

we say that man, human life, is a dance, which lasts for 4,320,000 years. And of course, there are all sorts of other dances, going on at there own rythyms, Star dances, rock dances,
fish dances, insect dances, plant dances, and strange animal scenes like crocodile dances, elephant dances...

The human dance lasts for 4,320,000 years, a span of time which we call a kalpa.

before it begins and after it ends, there is always another kalpa, or 'off' period of rest, in which the self is simply the self, and doesn't pretend to be this 'me' or that 'you'.

we call this rest period the pralaya; peace, uninvolvement, pure bliss

Posted by: Catharine at August 12, 2006 11:38 PM

When 4,320,000 years of rest draw to a close, the lila dance begins again. Although it always feels like the first time. every day is today.
and so through many centuries, many pulses of waking and sleeping, life and death, you spread your world out across a span of time that varies in mood like a rainbow,

running from purple to red, and from royal and light to destruction and fire, for, as there is no purple without red, there is no pleasure without pain

There are thus 4 divisions of the kalpa, and we call each one a yuga, and we name them after the 4 throws in the hindu game of dice - krita, the perfect throw of 4,

treta - the slightly imperfect throw of 3, dvapara - the throw of 2, and kali - the worst throw of 1.

And so the first period, krita yuga runs for 1,728,000 years, in which the world is perfect, as a fresh flower, and unblemished as the skin of a young girl.

The second period, treta yuga, is slightly shorter, running for 1,296,000 years, in which a small element of evil and decay enters into life, and the tips of the petals are very slightly brown.

The third period, dvapara yuga, is shorter still, running for 864,000 years. The syllable "dva" in dvapara means 2, double, or dual. In this age, the powers of good and evil are

equally balanced.

The fourth and final period is kali yuga. Running for only 432,000 years, in which the power of evil and destruction takes over.

At the end, your eternal self takes the form of Shiva, Lord of renewal through death. blue bodied and ten armed with a necklace of skulls.
but with one hand in the gesture called 'fear not' as a reminder that all of this is in illusion, and play.

Then Shiva dances the tandava dance, the dance of fire in which the material world is destroyed, and the self returns to the state of pralaya; peace, uninvolvement, pure bliss

Posted by: Catharine at August 12, 2006 11:40 PM

All of this goes on forever, through kalpa after kalpa after kalpa, after kalpa. And not only this universe for this universe that we know is but a speck of dust in another universe.

And all the specks of dust in this universe contain minute universes without measure. Boundless inward into the atom, boundless outward into the whole.

However vast, however incomprehensible, however terrifying! this entire display may seem to be, it is at root your own inmost self.

The self which you cannot see, nor touch, nor pin down, nor control, because its too close, too near, right in the middle of everything

because its you

Aug. 12/13, 2006 -- New false flag terrorist link involving diamond trade discovered in New York. A Syrian Jew named Rimon Alkatri was indicted by a New York City grand jury for phoning a false terrorist threat to the New York City police in May. The indictment charged Alkatri with making a false terrorist threat in the first degree. Alkatri was arrested on July 31, a little over a week from the hype generated by the "great airplane liquid bombing hoax" reported by WMR (see below).

Alkatri, who owns the El Castillo de Oro jewelry store on Knickerbocker Avenue in Brooklyn and who arrived in the United States in 1996, was arrested by police while he was leaving his apartment in a Syrian Jewish neighborhood on East 9th Street. In May, Alkatri, using the alias Jose Rodriguez, and claiming to be from Israel, said he overheard five Syrian employees of his store use the phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) and that they were plotting to hide explosives in hollowed-out jewelry and perpetrate a suicide bombing in the New York subway system on the Fourth of July. In the ten or so days before police became suspicious of Alktari, there were no moves by the Transportation Security Administration to ban the wearing of jewelry by passengers on aircraft.

Posted by: Catharine at August 13, 2006 1:21 AM

Police soon became suspicious of "Jose Rodriguez's" account. The Israeli connection promoted police to alert Israeli authorities and a New York City detective stationed in Jerusalem to pursue the case. Police later discovered that the five Syrian "conspirators" identified by Alkatri were not even Muslims, but Christians and Jews.

Alkatri was not the first person associated with the international diamond business to have been involved in a terrorist threat. In 2003, Yehuda Abraham, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, global diamond dealer, and native of Afghanistan, was charged with money laundering for an Indian weapons smuggler named Hemant Lakhani who was attempting to purchase Russian portable missile launchers to bring down American passenger planes in the United States. Abraham was later convicted in the scheme that also involved a Malaysian bag man associated with the Southeast Asian Al Qaeda off-shoot Jemaah Islamiya. One of Abraham's chief diamond businesses was in Bangkok. Osama Bin Laden used an Algerian, who dressed as a Hasidic and used the name "Cyril Jacob," to sell West African blood diamonds in Hatton Garden, the Jewish diamond district of London. The editor's book, "Jaded Tasks," has a chapter on the connections between the diamond trade and terrorist financing.

Aug. 11, 2006 -- UPDATED. According to knowledgeable sources in the UK and other countries, the Tony Blair government, under siege by a Labor Party revolt, cleverly cooked up a new "terror" scare to avert the public's eyes away from Blair's increasing political woes. British law enforcement; neo-con and intelligence operatives in the United States, Israel, and Britain; and Rupert Murdoch's global media empire cooked up the terrorist plot, liberally borrowing from the failed 1995 "Oplan Bojinka" plot by Pakistan- and Philippines-based terrorist Ramzi Ahmad Yousef to crash 11 trans-Pacific airliners bound from Asia to the United States. In the latest plot, it is reported that liquid bombs were to be detonated on 10 trans-Atlantic planes outbound from Britain to the United States.

The London terror plan was "known" last Sunday by British and American authorities, according to the Indian press. American Airlines flight 109 from London Heathrow to Boston boarded a family of five, however, after the plane left Heathrow authorities determined that the father appeared on a British suspect list drawn up after the 7/7 London transit attacks. At first, the pilot was instructed to fly all the way to Boston where U.S. authorities could claim credit for apprehending the suspect. However, the pilot, fearing for the safety of his passengers and crew, refused and quickly returned to Heathrow without informing the passengers. Once on the ground, it was discovered that the male had in his carry-on baggage the type of combination liquid explosive and electronic device now being hyped by the British and American media.

Posted by: Catharine at August 13, 2006 1:30 AM

British sources report that the reason for the delay in informing the airlines and traveling public about the liquid bomb on the American flight was to maximize the beneficial political impact for Blair and George W. Bush, both plummeting in the polls from the situations in Iraq and Lebanon.

Earlier this week, two employees of Murdoch's London tabloid, News of the World, were charged with hacking into the voice and text cell phone messages of three members of the staff of Clarence House, the residence of Princes Charles, William, and Harry. One of those charged with the wiretapping was Clive Goodman, the Royals editor of the News of the World. The same paper earlier tried to politically damage two anti-Iraq war British politicians -- Scottish Socialist Tommy Sheridan and Respect Party MP George Galloway. The paper charges that Sheridan was unfaithful to his wife by going to swinger's clubs. He won a quarter million dollar lawsuit against the paper. Galloway was confronted by Mazher Mahmood, an individual who uses the moniker "Fake Sheik," who posed as a wealthy Arab businessman and tried unsuccessfully to get Galloway to accept cash and make anti-Semitic remarks. In fact, Mahmood was and continues to be a reporter for News of the World, his continued employment approved by Murdoch. Goodman has merely been suspended by Murdoch but he has not been fired.

Posted by: Catharine at August 13, 2006 1:32 AM

However, what prompted Murdoch and Blair to hype a new global "terror" threat was what Murdoch learned from eavesdropping on the phone calls of Prince Charles' staff at the future king's office, home, and limousine. The eavesdropping revealed that Charles was working with Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, who is to the left of Blair, to conduct the same type of political maneuver that John Major used to oust Margaret Thatcher from office. London's left-wing Mayor, Ken Livingston, was also in on the Charles-Brown plan and it was expected that in return for his support, Livingston would get a senior position in a Brown cabinet -- a development that sent shock waves through the neo-con circles in London, Washington, and Jerusalem, including British Home Secretary John Reid and Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. The Charles-Brown plan was briefed by Blair to Bush during the former's recent visit to Washington. However, because the phony terror plot was known to both leaders -- they decided to be away on vacation when the terror plot was "uncovered." Bush is vacationing at his Crawford, Texas "ranch," while Blair is on vacation in Barbados, staying at Sir Cliff Richard's luxurious villa.

After Blair met with Bush in Washington, he flew to California where on July 30 he attended Murdoch's News Corporation private corporate executive conference at the posh Inn at Spanish Bay golf resort in Pebble Beach. Blair met with Murdoch, Israeli former Prime Minister Shimon Peres, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Newt Gingrich, and various Fox, Star, and Sky News executives. The final touches were agreed to by Blair and Murdoch on how the fake terror plot would play out in Murdoch's media empire.

Blair told Bush that a Brown government would move to withdraw British troops from Iraq, break the "special relationship" with the Bush White House, and move closer to the European Union and the United Nations.

The Israeli attack on Lebanon created a rift within Blair's Cabinet with some former Blair loyalists signaling their support for the political coup against Blair. As a result, a suspect passenger was permitted to board an American aircraft at Heathrow with a liquid bomb to lay the groundwork for the media and travel hysteria five days later.

Posted by: Catharine at August 13, 2006 1:35 AM

The wiretapping of Charles' messages also indicated that he has weighed in with various European royal families to discourage them from inviting Bush on state visits to their nations. This, reportedly upset the Bush and Blair regimes, who were working together to improve Bush's image in Europe. The White House's displeasure with the monarchies in Spain, Belgium, Sweden, Luxembourg, and Norway are a direct result of the Murdoch eavesdropping on Charles' staff.

Not surprisingly, after Galloway tore into a Sky News reporter on a recent televised interview, The Sun, a Murdoch paper, is now reporting that one of the 24 British aircraft liquid bomber suspects now under arrest, Waheed Zaman, met with Galloway "many times." The paper quotes the sister of the suspect. A Galloway spokesman denies that Galloway knows the suspect. What is suspect is the Murdoch media empire that makes up news and commits illegal acts to provide cover for the false flag operations being conducted by Britain, the U.S., and Israel.

Posted by: Catharine at August 13, 2006 1:36 AM

Posted by: conbo at August 13, 2006 1:36 AM

Pakistan's Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) agency has helped provide the cover story for the alleged liquid bombers. Working with British and U.S. intelligence, the ISI says it broke up the plot after arresting terrorist suspects in Lahore and Karachi. However, the ISI claims that the men were affiliated with the Kashmiri terrorist group Lashkar-e-Toiba, a group that is run and funded by the ISI itself.

The disclosure of the Charles-Brown plot has already created a backlash from the neo-cons. The Murdoch media is already floating the rumor that Home Secretary Reid is now Blair's chosen successor, while there will be an effort to scandalize Charles in an effort to convince the British public that it would be best to skip over him and have Prince William assume the throne upon Queen Elizabeth's death or abdication.

Posted by: Catharine at August 13, 2006 1:37 AM

British commentators are noting that it is Reid, a noted neo-con, who is chairing national security "Cobra" meetings in Blair's absence. Blair bypassed Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and many political observers believe that Prescott was passed over because of evidence that he was involved in supporting the Charles-Brown coup. Prescott chaired Cobra meetings in the wake of the July 7, 2005 (7/7) London transit bombings.

Meanwhile, Republican governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mitt Romney used the occasion to boost their sagging popularity by placing their states' National Guardsmen at major airports in their states.

Study: Cat Parasite Affects Human Culture

A parasitic microbe commonly found in cats might have helped shape entire human cultures by manipulating the personalities of infected individuals, according to a new study.

Infection by a Toxoplasma gondii could make some individuals more prone to some forms of neuroticism and could lead to differences among cultures if enough people are infected, says Kevin Lafferty, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

In a survey of different countries, Lafferty found that people living in those with higher rates of T. gondii infection scored higher on average for neuroticism, defined as an emotional or mental disorder characterized by high levels of anxiety, insecurity or depression.

Actually there were originally 15 commandments. Three stone tablets, five commandments on eac.

But Moses dropped one and broke it on the way down the mountain.

Posted by: Meg at August 13, 2006 3:35 AM

Dear Word Detective: What is the derivation of the word "mosaic," with a lower-case "m"? Could it come from "Mosaic" (with an upper-case "M") meaning "related to Moses" ? After all, Moses did smash the first double-tablet edition of The Ten Commandments into lots of little pieces, and mosaic art is created from lots of little pieces. No, this is not a joke. It is a serious inquiry. This actually was debated by members of my synagogue.

-------

Good question, and I never for a moment took it as a joke. First of all, the possibility of a mosaic-Moses connection is an eminently reasonable conjecture. Secondly, to make jokes in this column you first have to join the union, and according to our records you haven't. Sorry, but them's the rules.

As it happens, the answer is no, there is no connection between Moses and "mosaic," the art of creating pictures or patterns by fitting together small bits of glass, pottery or stone. The root of "mosaic" is the Medieval Latin "musaicum," meaning "work of the Muses," itself ultimately from the Latin "Musa," or "Muse." In Greek mythology, the Muses, as I'm sure we all recall, were the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. The Muses were (and still are, at least metaphorically) regarded as the inspiration of all art and music.

The logical connection between the Muses and mosaic artwork is a bit uncertain, but it may be that Medieval mosaics were so often dedicated to the muses that the form and the inspiration became inextricably associated. Or it may be that ancient temples dedicated to the Muses ("mouseion" in Greek, source of our modern "museum") were often decorated with mosaic murals.

NEVER GIVE IN!

The ongoing catastrophe that is Iraq has people like Joe Lieberman genuinely terrified at the thought of exploring other measures, even in the face of overwhelming and uncontested evidence that the current (collision) course is not only unsustainable but completely counterproductive.

When not too busy being self-righteously destructive, these people are a laugh riot.

Imagine them in the office:

Lieberman staffer: "Uh, ya know, Joe, repeatedly kicking that copy machine really won't do anything to help fill the empty paper tray."

Joe Lieberman: "You're just a defeatist! You want the copier to win, don't you? You're obviously deeply unserious about getting copies made."

staffer: "But Joe--the paper tray is empty. Why don't you just refill it?"

Joe Lieberman: "Aha! Wouldn't you like to see me do just that? O-ho-ho, for your information, Miss Smarty Pants, refilling the paper tray would only embolden other copy machines to run out of paper. If we don't make a stand against empty-trayism by continuing to kick this copy machine, we'll soon be faced with putting paper in FAX machines, too! It'll never end! You can give in to despair, but not me, sister! I'm a fighter! I don't cave in!"

[re: meanings and labeling of terrorists]

Terrorists want to keep the definition [of "terrorist"] unclear because they like to pretend they're not terrorists.

And governments like to keep the definition [of "terrorist"] unclear because they like to pretend that all of their enemies are terrorists.

This blurring of definitions has crossed over to muddle the meaning of the word "guerrilla" as well.

Simple terrorists, again, like to pretend they're actually guerrilla fighters.

And regimes battling actual guerrilla fighters like to pretend they're fighting simple terrorists.

(This latter [reaction] is [extremely] unhelpful -- and militarily disastrous -- in that it regimes are surprised and befuddled whenever they encounter "asymmetrical warfare," which ought to be entirely predictable.)

Sidenote: I have a familial stake in maintaining the distinction between guerrilla warfare and terrorism. My great, great, great, great grandfather was a captain in the New Jersey Militia while that state/colony was under British occupation.

The asymmetric warfare conducted by this militia was directed, ultimately, by Gen. George Washington, who later became the namesake for a city filled with people who seem to think that this is a novel, 21st-century strategy.

Despite all this disingenuous mislabeling, the hallmark of terrorism remains clear: Terrorists kill civilians. And you're not allowed to do that.

"Democrats Pleased Joe Got Beat in Connecticut

Dems nationwide think their party is stronger for Lamont’s victory, and want their candidates to tout anti-war credentials

An overwhelming majority of likely-voting Democrats nationwide said they are glad three-term Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman was walloped by anti-war challenger Ned Lamont in that state’s Democratic primary election Tuesday.

They also said the Lamont victory over one of the few pro-war Democrats in Washington makes them optimistic they can win control of at least one of the two houses of Congress in November.

The Zogby Interactive survey was conducted Aug. 9-10, 2006, and included 1,229 Democratic respondents nationwide. It carries a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.

It found that nearly four out of five Democrats (79%) were happy the former Democratic vice presidential nominee was knocked off by Lamont, a wealthy cable television executive whose campaign focused almost exclusively on his opposition to the war – and Lieberman’s support of it. Just 12% said they were not pleased with the results of the primary, which riveted political junkies across the nation. Another 10% of Democrats said they were not sure what to think."...

4. How should parents treat a stubborn and rebellious son?

1. He should be beaten seven times with a whip made of horsehair.

2. He should be stripped and humiliated at the gate of the city.

3. He should be expelled from the family.

4. He should be stoned to death.

Romans 1

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

On Stephanopoulos, George Will quoted John Kerry from his presidential campaign in order to state that Kerry had it right.

Kerry was putting forth a truth that I have been stating since shortly after 9/11.

Catching international criminals who commit murder requires international cooperation in an international law enforcement effort.

War Dog, among others, laugh at this notion.

They are wrong. The Brits have proved them wrong more than once. Rumsfeld and his ilk have proved more than once that the military method does not work.

There are three anti-terrorism efforts that are effective.

1.) A years-long, global hearts-and-minds campaign.

2.) Diplomacy which strives to keep communication channels open rather than using the closing-down of diplomatic relationships as the first club in the punitive arsenal.

3.) A bona fide push toward international law enforcement cooperation.

This is a partial defense of military actions, at best.

When a military plan INCLUDES the "collateral damage" in precisely and carefully estimated numbers, then the military is knowingly and purposefully killing civilians.

To argue otherwise is impossible to defend.

That was the plan since the end of the cold war. It was a failure that gave us the first World Trade Center bombing, 911, Khobar Towers, the bombing of Air India Flight 182, etc. etc.

Wikipedia:

Terrorism is the systematic use or threatened use of violence to intimidate a population or government and thereby effect political, religious, or ideological change.[1][2] Terrorist attacks are designed to influence the broader society to which those killed, injured, or taken hostage belong. The dramatic focus of mass media is often ascribed as amplifying and broadcasting feelings of intense fear and anger that make terrorism more effective in the modern world. As a type of unconventional warfare, terrorism is designed to weaken or supplant existing political landscapes through capitulation or acquiescence as opposed to subversion or direct military action.

The term is also used pejoratively to assert that its violence targets "innocent civilians," or that it is immoral, wanton, unjustified, indiscriminate, or executed "with disregard for human life." According to some definitions of terrorism used by states and governments, terrorists are actors who do not belong to any recognized armed force, or who do not adhere to their rules, and who are therefore regarded as "rogue actors." Groups that call themselves separatists, revolutionaries, guerrillas and other specific terms are often referenced vaguely and pejoratively by their enemies as terrorists.

That was the plan that made the Cold War a cold war instead of a hot one.

China and Russia are now more interested in competing with the U.S. economically than blowing it up.

You are wrong, War Dog. The Neoconservative pax Americana plan is a dismal failure. Face the fucking facts that are writ much too large to pretend that they don't exist. Canvass American and global opinion. Stop acting like Lieberman; admit that you have lost, that your idea was wrong and start to move forward with a different plan instead of taking this country further down your bottomless hole of failure.

Descent Into Moral Barbarism

Posted by: air-ono at August 13, 2006 10:55 AM

And so, at least for one day, Joe Lieberman became the most prominent spokesman for the Republican strategy in 2006: paint Iraq critics as frail on national security at a time when our foes are at their fiercest. The GOP has moved aggressively to capitalize on Lieberman's defeat and the subsequent London terror news. On Friday, the Republican National Congressional Committee circulated a memo urging Republican candidates to jump on the week's headlines: "Recent events have reminded us that we continue to operate in a pivotal phase in the global war on terror," it read. "You should move to question your opponent's commitment to the defeat of terror and ... create a definitive contrast on this issue."

The GOP has artfully used that script in the last two election cycles. Its appeal had seemed to wane as anger over the Iraq war mounted. But Karl Rove and the Republicans now see a new opportunity in "Lamontism"—the idea that liberal Democrats will risk failure in Iraq to score points with a public grown weary of war. (Lamont favors withdrawal of the troops from Iraq but redeployment elsewhere in the Middle East.) "If you have Lamont Democrats who say, 'Bring 'em home, turn away and it will all be over' ... the American people say, 'You're kidding yourself' ... The only way you walk away from war is as a victor," said a senior administration official who asked for anonymity speaking about the politics of national security. Now GOP candidates across the country who have feared the mention of combat on the campaign trail are embracing it once again—hoping that one last time, Americans will come to see the conflict in Iraq as indivisible from the broader war on terror.

I want to rescind my knee-jerk sentence written in reaction to your opening statement, "That was the plan that made the Cold War a cold war instead of a hot one."

That is a partially true statement but it is a distraction from the subject at hand.

In order to make your claim, you need to be able to show that the incidences of successful terrorism are a substantial percentage of the total attempts.

If the attempts were many and the successes few, then the non-war response was working effectively.

Even the Neocons state that, "there will be acts of terrorism that we fail to stop" because to claim otherwise is foolish.

...which makes your claim foolish.
