Army to rebid Halliburton unit's contract By PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press Writer
Wed Jul 12, 6:20 PM ET

The Army will rebid the multibillion-dollar contract under which a Halliburton Co. subsidiary has been providing services to troops around the world after years of complaints over how the deal has worked in Iraq.

Critics of the contract said the move was overdue and that hundreds of millions of dollars had probably been wasted.

Halliburton subsidiary KBR, also known as Kellogg Brown & Root, provides food, water, shelter, laundry service and other logistical support for troops under a 2001 contract that has been extended several times.

Halliburton is a Texas-based oil services conglomerate once led by Vice President Dick Cheney. Bush administration officials have come under fire since the beginning of the war in Iraq for awarding more than $10 billion to the company and its subsidiaries in 2003 and 2004, some of it in no-bid contracts. There have been allegations of fraud, poor work, overpricing and other abuse, which the company has denied.

Army spokesman Dave Foster said Wednesday that although the service will rebid the contract, it has not decided yet how that will be done. KBR would be allowed to bid in the new competition, but one option Army officials are considering is to divide the work among three companies.

Asked why the contract was being discontinued, Foster said it was part of the Army's "lessons learned" process.

"The Army lives on 'lessons-learned.' We get better each and every time we do it," Foster said. "There's discussion under way that there may be — may be — a better way of doing this. If you open it up to as many as three bids, that offers more open competition."

Halliburton spokeswoman Melissa Norcross said it was "neither unusual nor unexpected that the ... contract may be replaced with another competitively bid approach."

KBR's achievements in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan have been "nothing short of amazing," she said, noting that KBR has prepared nearly 375 million meals, washed more than 18.5 million bundles of laundry and transported hundreds of millions of gallons of military fuel

Donny Deutsch Shatters the Coulter Myth
By: John Amato @ 3:19 PM - PDT

Donny really did a number on Coulter last night. They said a few things that I will differ with of course, but there was no wiggle room for Coulter to break free from. There wasn’t a talking head that would give in to her vaudevillian brand of extremism. He’s telling her that there are no liberal bogeymen. Then he gets started on her shots at the 9/11 widows.

He has Ann Coulter on TV, and he’s taking her apart. It’s amazing. He’s saying that her supposedly villainous liberals don’t exist, and he’s pointing out that Bush isn’t doing a good job in the war on terror,

Spike Lee´s New Orleans Movie To Premiere In City

New Orleans

One might not like what Spike Lee has to say. And some believe he is wrong, when he has referred to bombing of levees to get rid of black people in New Orleans and in this case, perhaps “dead wrong“. Still, with his fame, it is worth considering his “EPIC HBO DOCUMENTARY WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS” which will have a world premiere August 16 in New Orleans before a potential 10,000 people.

The premiere in New Orleans will be one year after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. On Wednesday, Aug. 16, Acts I and II will be presented free of charge before a potential audience of 10,000 people at the New Orleans Arena. The Arena is located next to the Louisiana Superdome, which became known as a shelter for residents after the hurricane hit.

Director Lee will travel to New Orleans for the screening. "It is our hope that WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE gives the diverse people of New Orleans a platform for their voice," notes Lee.

ok Chubby, im a freak. we get it.

A New Orleans not-for-profit organization received the opportunity to thank Governor Blanco at a signing ceremony that followed the official signing earlier last month.

According to an organization called Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans, Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco’s signing ceremony marked the completion of the legislative process in the fight for assessor consolidation.

Here is the written statement by the Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans:

The signing of this legislation, which officially took place on June 22, 2006, provides technical support for a constitutional amendment passed last month by the Louisiana Legislature to give voters across the State the ultimate decision on whether Orleans should consolidate its seven tax assessors into one office. The proposed amendment, which will appear on the ballot this November, must garner the support of the public statewide as well as a majority in Orleans.

“The fight for good government in Louisiana has taken a giant step forward today. The current tax assessor system in our city is inefficient, unfair and injures the interest of Orleans citizens,” stated Ruthie Frierson, Chairman of Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans. “However, while we celebrate today, we are also aware that getting this measure approved by the voters will require tremendous energy and determination. Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans will continue to put its full weight behind this effort,” continued Frierson.

Donation helps rebuild New Orleans eateries

The James Beard Foundation has given the Gulf Coast Renaissance Fund $30,000 US to help rebuild small, classic New Orleans restaurants destroyed by hurricane Katrina.

The money was raised from proceeds from ticket sales to the 2006 James Beard Foundation Awards in May, which were a tribute to the culinary legacy of New Orleans.

Foundation president Susan Ungaro presented the cheque to the Southern Foodways Alliance, a not-for-profit institute that documents and celebrates the diverse food cultures of the American South.

War Veterans Feeling Stressed, Deserted

(CBS News) FORT CARSON, Colo. According to a recent report from the Veterans Administration, more than 50,000 vets from Iraq and Afghanistan are believed to be suffering from mental health problems — nearly half of them from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. It's well documented and, says the Pentagon, well treated both in the field and at home. But CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian reports that at least in one large military base in Colorado, soldiers are saying members of the Army Command are simply paying lip service, at best, to PTSD — hindering their treatment and upending their careers.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team in Fort Carson, Colo., is training to go back to Iraq after experiencing some of the fiercest combat last year. The unit lost soldiers at double the rate of other Army posts around the country, including Pfc. Sam Lee, who committed suicide at a Ramadi Army barracks.

----

In the face of what some are calling an epidemic of PTSD in the military, nearly a dozen soldiers at Fort Carson told CBS News that their cries for mental health either went unanswered or they found themselves subject to unrelenting abuse and ridicule.

Kaye Baron is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Colorado Springs, Colo. Each week, she counsels up to 25 "emotionally broken" soldiers who are either unwilling or unable to face their problems while on base.

I just wanted to inform everyone that I've found the specific law that details the declassification methods! It's pretty much THE smoking gun when it comes to Rove.

The law was passed in December of '91, and it's called 50 USC Sec. 435

You can say Americans watch for the comedic effect, however, I know FoxNews was very effective in getting out the message of the Swift Boat Veterans for truth. The result being that Bush was elected again, with greater than 50% of Americans voting for him. More importantly, however, was that the election of Bush has lead to Judge Robertson and Alito being appointed and approved to the Supreme Court.

I wasn't being intolerant. That is, again, one of your own projections. So ask yourself, why are you so intolerant of liberals?

There were some experts who recently predicted the rise of liberalism was beginning. These same experts correctly predicted the rise of conservativism back in the 70s, when everyone thought liberalism had become permanent. Look around you. Check the news. People have become disaffected with conservativism and are moving left. You are one of the reasons why. Your mere presence here is proof of your fear and desperation.

Now that the Supreme Court has been balanced with the appointments of Robertson and Alito to the court, you radical leftists are going to have a difficult time trying to shove the gay agenda and abortion down the throats of Americans via the court. These issues will soon be put in front of the American people to a vote and Americans will clearly reject abortion/murder and the gay agenda.

Graham's faux debate
Supreme Court dismissed senator's fabricated exchange

BY SCHUYLER KROPF
The Post and Courier

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham may have a future as a fiction writer.

He's being accused of fabricating a Senate debate and sending it to the U.S. Supreme Court, which didn't think much of the work. The high court dismissed it.

At issue is an account of an exchange that Sens. Graham, R-S.C., and Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., wrote last year to be inserted into the Congressional Record.

It details what the two lawmakers purported was part of the Senate's debate over why terror detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should not be tried in civilian U.S. courts.

The actual discussion Graham and Kyl inserted in the Record never took place.

But their comments, written more than a month after the actual debate, became part of the terror case filing that went to the Supreme Court.

Reached Tuesday in Washington, Graham said he did nothing improper, contending that senators file amended speeches in debates all the time.

"That's what you do," he said. "You enter it on the record as if it were part of the debate."

Critics, meanwhile, called the Graham-Kyl account unethical.

John Dean, former counsel to President Richard Nixon, writing in the online legal journal FindLaw last week, said he had not seen "so blatant a ploy, or abuse of power, since Nixon's reign."

He called their effort "a bogus colloquy."

The British-based widow of an Arab journalist killed by a US missile strike in Iraq has filed a wrongful death claim for £16.6 million against the US Defence Department and President George Bush as the military commander in chief.

Hamdi Rifai, the lawyer for Dima Tahboub, who lives in Manchester, said the claim marked the first step towards filing a civil lawsuit that will name Bush, defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld and others over the death of her husband, Tareq Ayyoub, a Jordanian who worked for the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera satellite TV network.

Ayyoub was killed on April 8 2003 when a US missile destroyed the Baghdad headquarters of Al-Jazeera, which is based in Doha, Qatar. The US military said the missile had been aimed elsewhere and went off course, hitting the Al-Jazeera bureau in the Iraqi capital.

Rifai said grounds for the lawsuit would be that the military broke the Geneva Conventions requirement to protect non-combatant civilians in conflict.

Not only did the US government not protect Ayyoub, Rifai told The Associated Press, it targeted Al-Jazeera, which has been the subject of frequent US complaints about allegedly incendiary, anti-American reporting.

His lawsuit will be filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army will discontinue its multi-billion dollar contract with oil services giant Halliburton Co. to provide logistical support to U.S. troops worldwide, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

Halliburton, formerly run by Vice President Dick Cheney, has drawn scrutiny for its work in Iraq from auditors, congressional Democrats and the Justice Department, which is investigating potential overcharges for fuel, dining and laundry services.

Texas-based Halliburton is the world's second-largest oil services company and the U.S. military's biggest contractor in Iraq. The logistical support is performed by Halliburton engineering and construction unit Kellogg Brown & Root. Last year, the Army paid the company more than $7 billion under the contract, the Post said.

Army officials defended the company's performance but said Pentagon leaders decided multiple contractors would give them better prices, more accountability and greater protection if a one contractor fails to perform, the newspaper said.

Halliburton maintains that its billing disputes with Defense Department auditors have been resolved and that its work has received rave reviews from the military, the Post reported.

The Pentagon's decision on Halliburton comes as the U.S. contribution to Iraq's reconstruction begins to wane, reducing opportunities for U.S. companies after nearly four years of massive payouts to the private sector, the newspaper said.

According to the report, the Pentagon plans to split the Iraq work among three companies to be chosen this fall and Halliburton would be eligible to make a bid.

A fourth firm would be hired to help monitor the performance of the three contractors selected, the newspaper said.

Rep. Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record) of California, the top Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee and a frequent Halliburton critic, welcomed the move away from the exclusive contract with Halliburton as a good first step, the Post said.

"When you have a single contractor, that company has the government over a barrel," Waxman said. "One needs multiple contractors in order to have real price competition. Rea

Guilty Verdict for 3 in Case Involving Bonanno Clan

It is often the most emotionally charged period during a criminal trial: the brief interlude between the time the jurors notify the court that they have reached a verdict, and the moment when they deliver it.

But yesterday, in United States District Court in Brooklyn, Baldassare Amato, a longtime Bonanno soldier who is facing life in prison on racketeering conspiracy and murder charges, breezed through the tension with a relaxed smile. To a casual observer, he looked more like he was waiting for a friend than a verdict. His lawyer’s young intern, sitting beside him at the defense table, looked more nervous than he did.

Mr. Amato, 54, who is from the old school of the family, remained unmoved — even tranquil — when the jury foreman began reading through the verdict sheet. It was an avalanche of the word “proved” — 16 times — that ended with him guilty of a conspiracy that included two murders, along with gambling charges. Two co-defendants were also convicted of racketeering conspiracy charges, including murder.

The jury in the case deliberated for nearly two days after a six-week trial. The testimony detailed not just the killings and other crimes, but the decimation of the Bonanno clan over the last four years by the F.B.I. and federal prosecutors, with testimony from a half-dozen Mafia turncoats about the crimes and the crime family’s declining fortunes.

CT Senate Republican Candidate Reels from Gambling Scandal
By Paul Kiel - July 12, 2006, 7:01 PM
That Connecticut Senate race just got even more entertaining:

Expect calls for Connecticut Republican United States Senate nominee Alan Schlesinger to abandon his race to begin in the next several days. Questions are being raised about the former state representative’s gambling habits that have Republicans sounding rattled.
A persistent government critic and former state police casino licensing commander Bradley Beecher sent emails early this week raising questions about Schlesinger. The ones that have Republicans talking are that their Senate candidate is, in casino parlance, a card counter and has used a “Wampum Card” (the Foxwood casino loyalty card that gets gamblers points for spending money) under the assumed name of “Alan Gold”. Schlesinger said today that he does have a card under that name but has not used it “in this decade.” The candidate, sounding agitated in a phone conversation, says he does recall being told by a casino official that he should not be playing blackjack at their facility....

The most serious trouble for Schlesinger, however, comes from Republican state chairman George Gallo, who told me this afternoon that the gambling questions raise “a lot of questions which Mr. Schlesinger is going to have to answer in the next couple of days.” Gallo, who is close to Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell, said, “Our mistake is that we only vetted candidates using their real names.”

CNN: Lewis Black demands CNN banner disappear

David Edwards
Published: Wednesday July 12, 2006

During an interview on CNN, comedian Lewis Black complained about CNN's "overuse" of key graphic banners and tickers. 24 hour news networks use similar banners and news tickers, that often prevent viewers from seeing the lower portion of the primary video.

Interrupting his interview with CNN's Miles O'Brien and looking toward backstage, Black demanded: "You guys -- and let me just say this to CNN -- you guys have got have got to start [to] take the thing off the bottom of the page. Take the words off the bottom of the screen! There are people talking here."

CNN promptly removed the banner and the ticker from the screen for the remainder of Black's interview.

"GOD HELP ME"

Yes. I actually read Ann Coulter's latest book.

(The title of this review hooked me).

Link to review:

http://www.campusprogress.org/soundvision/991/god-help-me

=====================

Excerpts:

"I made it all the way to page 145 of Godless: The Church of Liberalism - a little more than halfway through the book - before Ann Coulter finally managed to piss me off. Let's just say that mocking Nicholas Kristof for his coverage of the genocide in Darfur as a means of propping up Bill O'Reilly's mindless blather is seriously messed up. Charm, humor, and basic decency die for it on page 145.

At which point you realize the other problem with Godless: its target audience is the haplessly or willfully ignorant.

I've encountered brilliant conservatives who can shake my fundamental beliefs to the core without once resorting to intellectual dishonesty. Coulter's book is not for them.

It's when you put these two fundamental flaws of Godless together, though, that the most deeply unsettling facet of not just this but all of Coulter's work comes into clear relief. The all-consuming goal of these texts is not just to demonize progressives, but worse, to dehumanize them.

I can't help but wonder, though, whether in a different context this sort of casual hatemongering would become the bog water in which truly horrific evil spawns."

Militarism and the Corporate Welfare State

07/11/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- Right wing politicos and their conservative constituents are always bemoaning big government. Yet wealthy people of all political stripes constantly use big government to their own benefit. The rich widely assume, falsely, I think, that what is good for them is good for the country. By extension they also assume that what is good for the corporations is good for the people. But that has never been the case. No one should be allowed to make a living on the misery of others.

The latter seems odd, given that business people are always harping about getting the government out of our (their) lives; all the while they are using government to obtain no bid contracts, to write legislation in the corporate interest, stocking the judiciary with pro-corporate judges, redrawing political districts and using the military to invade and occupy sovereign nations in order to privatize them. Iraq provides a compelling case study.

Of course, what businessmen really mean by getting government off our backs is preventing government from regulating commerce, as if there were some connection between capital and democracy, democracy and freedom. In corporate speak democracy and free trade has nothing to do with human beings and their freedoms. What Bush and his kind are really talking about is absolute corporate rule and continued Plutocracy.

According to author Antonia Juhasz, “Prior to the first Gulf War in 1991 and even after eight years of war with Iran, Iraq was ranked 15 out of 130 countries on the 1990 United Nations Human Development Index. Before the first Bush invasion, Iraq had the highest percentage of college-educated citizens in the Middle East and above average overall literacy rates. According to the World Health Organization, prior to 1991 health care reached approximately 97 percent of the urban population and 78 percent of rural residents, while the infant mortality rate was well below average for developing countries. “

Posted by: Anonymous at July 12, 2006 11:50 PM

There hasn't been a victor declared in Mexico yet, as everyone but ignorant conservatives like President Bush know. Also keep in mind that what is called "conservative" in most industrialized democratic countries (which would unfortunately exclude Mexico) is called Democratic in the U.S.A. Hell, even Nixon conservatives in the U.S. are describing themselves as left of center by today's standards.

Israel attacks Beirut's airport

BBC

Israeli aircraft have fired rockets at the runways of Beirut's international airport in Lebanon, forcing its closure and the diversion of flights.
It follows the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah militants.

Meanwhile, 10 civilians were killed in fresh Israeli air raids in southern Lebanon, security sources said.

Israeli jets have pounded targets in southern Lebanon in retaliation for the soldiers' capture. Israel has said it holds Lebanon responsible.

The Beirut airport is Lebanon's only international airport.

It is located in the Lebanese capital's Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs.

Shortly after Israeli shells began falling on the runways, a senior airport official announced the facility was closed and asked scheduled flights to divert to Cyprus.

Israeli PM Ehud Olmert said the soldiers' capture was an "act of war", but Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah insisted the two would only be returned via talks.

Mr Olmert said he held Beirut responsible, but Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora denied any knowledge of the Hezbollah operation and refused to take responsibility for the soldiers' capture.

Israel attacks Lebanon after troops seized

By RAVI NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

JERUSALEM - Israel bombed and shelled southern Lebanon and sent ground troops over the border for the first time in six years Wednesday after Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers. Israeli planes attacked the runways of Beirut International Airport early Thursday, Israeli Army Radio reported, starting off a second day of attacks.

I think Anonymous left what he considered a rhetorical question, asking why we leftisits love killing babies.
Then, Cathy in Seattle put some fact into the matter stating that 72% of women who have abortions identify themselves as Christians.
In case "Anonymous" is actully wondering why good Christian women walk into abortion clinics everyday, he/she can look in the mirror.
It's because everyday a good Christian young woman finds herself with child. Everyday a good Christan young man runs like hell. (Their free abortion, abandonment.)
Then the good Christian young woman explores her options as a single mother.
Chase the daddy for money? Republicans cut funding earmarked to hunt down deadbeat dads.
Should she apply for a student loan and try to make a better life while raising her child. Republicans cut funds for students.
Perhaps she can work, pay daycare, and make rent, but she needs food stamps until she gets her degree. BZZZZZZ! Wrong. Republicans hate food stamps.

Only women face these choices.
That's why they walk into those clinics.

The US Military Descends on Paraguay, by Benjamin Dangl

...

On May 26, 2005, the Paraguayan Senate allowed US troops to train their Paraguayan counterparts until December 2006, when the Paraguayan Senate can vote to extend the troops' stay. The United States had threatened to cut off millions in aid to the country if Paraguay did not grant the troops entry. In July 2005 hundreds of US soldiers arrived with planes, weapons and ammunition. Washington's funding for counterterrorism efforts in Paraguay soon doubled, and protests against the military presence hit the streets.

Some activists, military analysts and politicians in the region believe the operations could be part of a plan to overthrow the left-leaning government of Evo Morales in neighboring Bolivia and take control of the area's vast gas and water reserves. Human rights reports from Paraguay suggest the US military presence is, at the very least, heightening tensions in the country.

Maron just revealed that they assured him that they would syndicate his CA show. Then, they refused to syndicate it. They offered a new morning show to him. When they refused his proposed salary, he decided that he would fulfill his current contract with the CA show then quit for the time being.

Showdown at Virginia Mason
The medical center wants to turn all nurses into supervisors—nullifying their union status.

By Geov Parrish
Extra Info

I have this vision that because I own a dog, soon I will be legally prohibited from joining a union.

It's not quite that bad—yet. But a series of decisions expected this summer from the Bush-appointed National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) could nullify the union memberships of millions of people in the United States and prevent any future unionization attempts by tens of millions more. And one of the most closely watched harbingers in the nation of how these rulings might play out is here in Seattle.

Under 1947's notorious union-busting Taft-Hartley Act, supervisors in the U.S. workforce are considered "management" and therefore have no legal right to unionize. The anticipated NLRB rulings, of three disputes collectively known as the Kentucky River cases, would allow employers in a wide array of industries to reclassify as "supervisors" any employee who has any type of oversight—no matter how inconsequential—over a lower-ranked or less-senior co-worker. Workers who take on apprentices. Lead men in manufacturing crews. Nurses who direct nursing aides.

And, well, I order our dog around. A lot. She seems to like it.

It really is just about that ridiculous. A nurse, for example, has no power to hire or fire, doesn't set schedules, can't mete out discipline. Yet under these rulings, she or he would be considered management. And in anticipation of such a ruling, Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle is quietly hoping to have all 600 of its registered nurses reclassified as supervisors, so as to break the VM nurses union, the Washington State Nurses Association, and win a legal dispute with them.

The case of that dispute arose from a controversial Virginia Mason policy requiring all employees to be inoculated with flu shots each year as a condition of employment (see "Shot for Flu—Or You're Through," Nov. 23, 2005). The WSNA refused on the grounds that it was a condition o

Still looking for tat parlors to play at this fall on the tour. Please read below.

Also...we just signed on Rodney Rose at 252 Tattoo in Cleveland!

Due to the the requests I've been getting from my friends in the Tattoo parlour biz I'm going to do a solo tour of Tattoo shops across America this fall (mid Sept. thru mid Nov.) AND I'm making a documentary film out of it.

If you have a tat shop, or know of one that would be interested, and are willing to pay $400 + a hotel room...(if that's too much for you, talk to me and we'll see what we can work out) I will come to your town...Alaska and Canada I may have to charge a bit more.

I'm willing to play other venues but this will primarily be a Tattoo Tour.

These are the shops that are signed on so far:

Mark Mahoney - Shamrock Social Club (shamrocksocialclub.com)- Hollywood, CA

Painless Mike - Incision Tattoo (incisiontattoo.com)- Glendale (Phoenix area), AZ

Gil Montie - Tattoomania (gillmontie.com)- Beaumont, TX

Jayme Whitaker - One Shot Tattoo- Cincinnati, OH

Omar -All American Tattoo- Salem, OR

Is this America, where far too many of the rich endlessly loot their stockholders and kick the employees in the teeth, the America that our soldiers in Ramadi and Kirkuk and Anbar Province and Afghanistan are fighting for? Is this America, where we will end up so far behind the financial eight ball we won't be able to see because of mismanagement by both parties, the America that our men and women are losing limbs for, coming home in boxes for?

The Saturday before Memorial Day, I spoke at a gathering of widows and widowers, parents and children of men and women in uniform who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The person who spoke before me was a beautiful woman named Joanna Wroblewski, whose husband of less than two years — after four years dating at Rutgers — had been killed in Iraq.

She cried as she spoke, and she was right to cry, but she said she tried to keep love and trust in her heart. She spoke of her devotion to her country and her husband's pride in the flag. There was not a dry eye in the room, nor should there have been.

ARE we keeping the faith with Joanna Wroblewski? Are we keeping the faith with her husband? Are we maintaining an America that is not just a financial neighborhood, but also a brotherhood and a sisterhood worth losing your young husband for?

Is this still a community of the heart, or a looting opportunity? Will there even be a free America for Mrs. Wroblewski's descendants, or will we be a colony of the people to whom we have sold our soul? Are we keeping the faith with this young widow? That is the question I ask about this beloved and glorious America for which her husband, Lt. John Thomas Wroblewski, died. If we are, we should be proud. If we are not, we'd better change, and soon.

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:

Its lovliness increases; it will never

Pass into nothingness; but still will keep

A bower quiet for us, and a sleep

Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet
breathing.

Therefore, on every morrow, are we wreathing

A flowery band to bind us to the earth,

Spite of despondence, of the inhuman dearth

Of noble natures, of the gloomy days,

Of all the unhealthy and o'er-darkn'd ways

Made for our searching: yes, in spite of all,

Some shape of beauty moves away the pall

From our dark spirits. Such the sun, the moon,

Trees old and young, sprouting a shady boon

For simple sheep; and such are daffodils

With the green world they live in; and clear rills

That for themselves a cooling covert make

'Gainst the hot season; the mid-forest brake,

Rich with a sprinkling of fair musk-rose blooms:

And such too is the grandeur of the dooms

We have imagined for the mighty dead;

An endless fountain of immortal drink,

Pouring unto us from the heaven's brink.

ROBERT PLANT lyrics "Freedom Fries"

The father, son and the Holy Ghost
Took the last train to the coast
They were moving fast, they were raising sand
They were running wild in the promised land

The father, son and the three wise men
Operating undercover out in Bethlehem
Will they heal the sick? Can they raise the dead?
Can they bring it on home like the good book says?

Billy the Kid told the Prince of Thieves,
A little give and take to satisfy my needs
You can give me lots but I'll take some more
I got my eyes on your treasure beneath the desert floor?

Freedom fries and burns and scars
The liberator goes too far
Freedom fries and screams and yells
The promised land is promised hell

I don't know how that image can be pasted over reality, the reality is liberal thought and action is being squelched.

Judge orders Republican off ballot in Senate race

PHOENIX A judge has ruled that a Republican legislator committed petition forgery and ordered him removed from the ballot in a key Senate race.

If upheld on an expected appeal, Judge Kenneth Fields' ruling removing Representative Russell Jones of Yuma from the ballot would deal a major blow to G-O-P hopes of winning a veto-proof majority in the Arizona Legislature.

Fields ruled that Jones engaged in forgery to get a place on the September primary ballot when he signed at least nine petitions as the circulator "knowing that he did not obtain the electors' signature in his presence."

That finding of petition forgery by a candidate triggered a provision in state law requiring that all the candidate's nominating petitions be disqualified.

Republican aide sentenced to 1 year in prison

Michael Tristano, a one-time chief of staff to former Republican House leader Lee Daniels of Elmhurst, was sentenced Wednesday to a year and a day in prison for assigning legislative staffers to do campaign work on state time.

"I failed both ethically and as a leader," Tristano, 58, told U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle.

Tristano pleaded guilty to a fraud charge in March and admitted that his work to steer state resources to Republican candidates cost Illinois up to $200,000.

The sentencing and court documents reviewed by the Tribune provided new evidence that Daniels has long been a target of the investigation, though he has never been charged.

I'm not worried, more curious. I used to be in radio and am still interested in the business side of things.

AAR doesn't seem to want to inform people about such matters, even in a general sense. Either that or I'm not looking in the right area.

The MN affiliate station is figure is having trouble. they have gone to soliciting donations from listeners. A couple of local hosts who had daily shows are off the air.

Sadly the all sports talk station was (is still I think) doing better. This may have changed, I haven't seen recent numbers.

In MN local politics is more of a hot topic than national. - I would guess that isn't unsual.

Talk radio is an interesting bird.

The New Media Monopoly

The New Media Monopoly describes the cartel of five giant media conglomerates who now control the media on which a majority of Americans say they most rely. These five are not just large — though they are all among the 325 largest corporations in the world — they are unique among all huge corporations: they are a major factor in changing the politics of the United States and they condition the social values of children and adults alike.

These five huge corporations — Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) — own most of the newspapers, magazines, books, radio and TV stations, and movie studios of the United States.

These Big Five (with General Electric's NBC a close sixth) do not manufacture automobiles, or clothing, or nuts and bolts. They manufacture politics and social values. The media conglomerates have been a major force in creating conservative and far right politics in the country. They have almost single-handedly as a group, in their radio and television dominance, produced a coarse and vulgar culture that celebrates the most demeaning characteristics in the human psyche — greed, deceit, and cheating as a legitimate way to win (as in the various "reality" shows).

Latest Arbitrons gave AAR an average share of 1.2.

They will lose their flagship station, WLIB, on August 31st.

Al Franken will HAVE TO drop out by March 2007, if he's going to make his run against Norm Coleman (can't raise campaign funds AND host a radio show).

Summation----With the "Sam Seder will be filling in for ______" every other hour, Rhodes and Malloy's ratings in the crapper, and the only thing that shows even slight ratings is ....JERRY! JERRY! JERRY....

November midterms will be the last election for AAR.

"Next couple of years"???

Try months....

1. Arbitrons, 2. WLIB pull-out, 3. Franken runs for Senate from MN.....facts, not opinions.

So..# 1...why do the investors keep throwing good money after bad, when the network gets ratings worse than your average community college student radio station?

#2....how do you LOSE NEW YORK CITY....a key liberal bastion, and then explain how you're going to "dominate" Tulsa, Peoria, Bangor, or Tallahassee?

#3....Franken started this thing, he's the counter-programming for Limbaugh, his chief nemesis....even Springer can't replace him and as far as "more bad press", what could be worse than "Al Franken abandons AAR"?

Franken leaves in Winter 2007, and the plug is pulled a year from now AT BEST.

\"So..# 1...why do the investors keep throwing good money after bad, when the network gets ratings worse than your average community college student radio station?\"

That\'s not true in places with larger coverage and the same questions could be said about FoxNews and I suspect that the answer is the same...Has it turned a profit yet?

\"#2....how do you LOSE NEW YORK CITY....a key liberal bastion, and then explain how you\'re going to \"dominate\" Tulsa, Peoria, Bangor, or Tallahassee?\"

There\'s that problem with low coverage again...

#3....Franken started this thing, he\'s the counter-programming for Limbaugh, his chief nemesis....even Springer can\'t replace him and as far as \"more bad press\", what could be worse than \"Al Franken abandons AAR\"?\"

Is that how you\'d spin it?...That\'s a rather obvious spin that could be predicted by oh let\'s say Franken himself?...

from the fact that I don't think AAR is going to last past Summer 2007?

So, I guess, if I ignored the facts of its low ratings, loss of a NYC flagship, and the near-certainty that its founding host is leaving in 6 months.....I'd be...."opposing Murdoch's domination"?!?!?

Okay, here's my reply. WARNING WARNING WARNING. this is a long one.

Okay, frankly I’m tired of people blaming the media for everything (from both sides of the political specturm)

QUOTE: they [the big 5] are a major factor in changing the politics of the United States and they condition the social values of children and adults alike….The media conglomerates have been a major force in creating conservative and far right politics in the country.

The media is in business for one thing and one thing only - - - to MAKE MONEY

You really believe they want to make us all conservatives?

If that was so…

Then how come Bush isn’t lauded as the best president we ever had? How come the front pages of every newspaper aren’t riddled with Praise for Bush and how well the country is doing, how well the war is going. How come Bush’s ratings are so low?

My newspaper is liberal, doesn’t hide it, in fact makes it pretty well known…how come they are still in business if the big 5 have no interest but to make us all conservatives?

And how is it that conservatives think the media (News, tv and Hollywood) is so liberal and radio isn’t? Aren’t they all owned by the same big 5?

If there was a Liberal radio station that was pulling in the best numbers in radio history you think the big 5 would shut it down? Hell no, they’d try to buy it if they didn’t own it. If they owned it, they’d milk it.

And how are there so many liberals in Hollywood and how do these liberals keep getting to make their projects that are so anti bush?

Anti bush music?

For TV shows that make it aren’t because we were told to watch them. They’re on because we said we wanted to watch them! Take a look at all the cancelled shows that didn’t make it past the first episode . The number is far more than what has become popular.

They look at trends in society and try their best to find something that will sell.

The media has a product to sell, whether it be radio, tv, movie, magazine, etc. but content is driven by MONEY, not what they want us to think.

Rush isn’t popular because they propped him up and said “BEHOLD, you’re NEW and GLORIOUS le

Rush isn’t popular because they propped him up and said “BEHOLD, you’re NEW and GLORIOUS leader of THOUGHT has arrived. Bow down, listen to him, and be our little sheep.”

No, he became popular because he resonated with a huge audience (whether you agree with him or not).

Did Gibson’s Passion do better than F-9/11 because it was forced down our throat or because more people WANTED to see it?

I don’t remember the Movie police coming to my house to take me to the 7pm showing of the Passion. Truth be told, I didn’t bother to go see either of them.

Seen 9/11 since then, not the Passion.

Radio and Network TV are free essentially. They live and die by the ratings. People have the freedom to turn it off.

What is the number one format on the radio? Country music. The Twin Cities alone has at least 3 I think. But I can tell you, the twin cities isn’t spilling over with Rednecks. Minneapolis is a Democrats dream city. Why is country music the number one format? Because it consistently pulls in good, overall, numbers. In other words…

money.

And remember, there are more music radio stations that talk.

Is there bias in media?

Sure there is, but it’s on both sides. Can’t help it, it’s human nature. There’s bias in media that isn’t even politically driven. Every news story, no matter who it’s written by, has a biased angle to it.

The media giants don’t want just conservatives money, they want EVERYONE’ S money. They know how to do it, by putting out products that will sell. That’s where the real bias is - your dollar.

If everyone (liberals and conservatives) thinks the media is biased in the other direction, then the media is doing their jobs.

Competition is a great sales tool. Look at Coke and Pepsi. McDonald’s and Burger King. Taco Bell vs. burger joints in general.

I remember it was said, there was no popular liberal talk show host because the media was not putting one on the air. So, AAR comes along and put a whole network of them on.

So why isn’t AAR kicking butt then?

The answer isn’t: because the media giants don’t want it on the air.

The answer i

So why isn’t AAR kicking butt then?

The answer isn’t: because the media giants don’t want it on the air.

The answer is: it isn’t resonating with enough of the public.

Why isn’t it resonating? I don’t know the answer to that.

Again, it isn’t because of the big 5.

Also look at MTV. You can’t tell me they put out a conservative agenda, and the future of tomorrow is eating up MTV. It is growing by leaps and bounds.

I do know, there are a handful of Liberal talk show hosts on air here in MN, and lo and behold they are on Conservative stations and they are doing well.

Sorry it was so long, but you asked.

(Sorry for late response, you guys...believe it or not, YOU are not the first priority....I know, crushes your little lib egos, but deal with it!)

No, Cat....losing your flagship station in New York is not "growing", nor is a 1.2 share average.

I notice in ALL of this attack on ME (for giving "Minnesotan" the info he/she wanted)...

that nobody has YET disputed the facts...and hardly gone after my conclusions....just attack me for "supporting Rupert Murdock" (!?!?!!?).

Come on MR bloggers....surely you've gotten some talking pts from Sam on why AAR is "doing fine" losing NYC, having a 1.2 avg, and how Al leaving is "no big deal"????

Posted by: Gare at July 13, 2006 10:36 AM

Posted by: Fishgrease at July 13, 2006 10:36 AM

Come on, Fish...the first step is admitting you have a problem.

So....how many times a week, in this blog or others, have you called somebody who disagreed with your politics "gay" or "a fag"?

Why (to you) is "being gay" a good attack line?

What is "bad" about being gay, that you think it useful when you attack your opponents?

Posted by: Gare at July 13, 2006 10:38 AM

We don't play fair here Gare.

We're fucked up like that.

Now go back to reading my blog already you slacker!

gare has all day to respond

jibes about the timeliness of his posts aren't a problem

it's a ploy designed to use the "i've got other priorities"

he sits in his urine all day, tactically responding to posts at will

"The media is in business for one thing and one thing only - - - to MAKE MONEY"

This is an important human value...? and thank you for noticing this.

"You really believe they want to make us all conservatives?"

:D The last two conservatives in the presidency were Clinton and Eisenhower! No. I don't see any conservative values expressed in the mass-mainstream media.

"You really believe they want to make us all conservatives?"

No. How does "he who has the most gold rules" equate a conservative value?

"How come the front pages of every newspaper aren’t riddled with Praise for Bush..."

More to the point, how come there isn't an honest assessment of how piss-poor he is? Why isn't he judged like Carter and Clinton were?

You keep using the word "conservative" and I don't see those conservative values you claim to be pushing, Minnesotan Con.

Good Morning all!

Here's bad news for today!!

Claims for jobless benefits jump by 19,00 By MARCY GORDON, Associated Press Writer
50 minutes ago

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week, apparently reflecting the spring slowdown in the economy.

The Labor Department said Thursday that applications for jobless benefits totaled 332,000 last week, an increase of 19,000 from the previous week, exceeding market expectations. Economists had forecast that jobless claims would rise by 7,000.

The level of unemployment claims was near a high of 337,000 in late May, a time of markedly weak job growth.

The latest weekly figure included some 4,000 claims for jobless benefits filed by workers in New Jersey during the weeklong state government shutdown there. Casino and racetrack employees, road construction workers and others who don't draw paychecks directly from the state lost wages as a result of the shutdown. State workers will be paid for the days they didn't work.

The weekly jobless figure also included an unspecified number of claims stemming from seasonal shutdowns in the auto industry.

The four-week moving average for claims increased to 317,250 from 308,500 in the previous week.

A number of recent indicators have provided evidence that the economy slowed in the spring under the impact of surging gasoline prices, rising interest rates and a cooling housing market.

U.S. employers, wary of bulking up payrolls with the economy slowing and energy prices rising, added a disappointing 121,000 jobs in June. Yet while job growth was tepid, growth in wages heated up — fanning inflation worries.

how about a shout out

war-dog would have at least given me a "hi, ono - i didn't see you there" by now

Oh, no problem, Fish...."Life isn't fair".....John Kennedy said that, BTW.

My only curiosity with you is....why your pals here seem oblivious to your gay-bashing?

God knows they wouldn't tolerate some "evil Nazi right-winger" attacking them for "being gay"....

is it that if you hate Bush, love high taxes on the "super rich", want a universal health care system, and support a "Department of Peace"....that a little homophobia is forgiven???

Al's leaving? I had heard about the potential for losing WLIB (I think they will work out their differences and get their contract extended further than August 31st)

Posted by: Bushleague at July 13, 2006 10:57 AM

Oh nooooo, please not a "liberal cruise"...remember when Bill O'Reilly tried to get one of those going...I wish AAR and The Nation would not set themself up for failure. (wincing)

WLIB move just a "negotiation trick"?....maybe.

"Al's leaving?"....Come on BL....why did he move back to Minnesota, if not to establish residency (after THIRTY years) and a "I'm a home-town guy"...and run against Coleman in 2008.

Why "Midwest Values PAC"...if not to establish a "Franken for Senate" campaign fund WHILE simultaneously helping out candidates in Minnesota whose endorsement Al will NEED for 2008?
