NEW YORK TIMES ENDORSES LAMONT
Ad Nags mentions it in his Sunday analysis of the race, which is posted online today. Whoops.
The editorial page of The New York Times on Sunday endorsed Mr. Lamont over Mr. Lieberman, arguing that the senator had offered the nation a “warped version of bipartisanship‿ in his dealings with Mr. Bush on national security.

This is the second episode of a six-part series titled Grandma Was an Activist: A Radio Series on Radical Women in the 1930s, which extensively utilized oral histories from the Oral History of the American Left collection at the Tamiment Library, NYU. It was produced by Charlie Potter and Beth Friend back in 1983 and was first aired on WBAI-FM (NY) in that year. The six half-hour programs included: (1) "The black and the red" - Activists in Harlem early in the Depression; (2) "How do you spell relief?" - The WPA and unemployment; (3) "On the line" - Women in the labor movement; (4) "They shall not pass" - Women of the anti-fascist movement; (5) "Readin' and 'ritin' on the road to power" - Socialist women on campus; and (6) "The militant muse" - Activist women in the arts.

Berkeley in the Sixties - Documentary
Six years in the making and with a cast of thousands, Berkeley in the Sixties recaptures the exhilaration and turmoil of the unprecedented student protests that shaped a generation and changed the course of America. Many consider it to be the best filmic treatment of the 1960s yet made.
This Academy Award-nominated documentary interweaves the memories of 15 former student leaders, who grapple with the meaning of their actions. Their recollections are interwoven with footage culled from thousands of historical clips and hundreds of interviews. Ronald Reagan, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mario Savio, Huey Newton, Allen Ginsburg, and the music of Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Baez and the Grateful Dead all bring that tumultuous decade back to life.
Its reflective and insightful analysis of the era - from the HUAC hearings and civil rights sit-ins at the beginning of the decade through the Free Speech Movement, the anti-war protests, the growth of the counter-culture, the founding of the Black Panther Party and the stirrings of the Women's Movement - confronts every viewer with the questions the 1960s raised, which remain largely unanswered.

Bush Submits New Terror Detainee Bill
By Anne Plummer Flaherty
The Associated Press
Friday 28 July 2006
Washington -U.S. citizens suspected of terror ties might be detained indefinitely and barred from access to civilian courts under legislation proposed by the Bush administration, say legal experts reviewing an early version of the bill.
A 32-page draft measure is intended to authorize the Pentagon's tribunal system, established shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks to detain and prosecute detainees captured in the war on terror. The tribunal system was thrown out last month by the Supreme Court.
Administration officials, who declined to comment on the draft, said the proposal was still under discussion and no final decisions had been made.
Senior officials are expected to discuss a final proposal before the Senate Armed Services Committee next Wednesday.

A war without borders in the making
With the initial Israeli goal of a swift crippling of Hezbollah fast turning into a nightmare quagmire in Lebanon, a much-dreaded "wider war" seems all but inevitable. This in turn will bring both al-Qaeda and the US into the Lebanese theater of conflict as a continuation of the "war on terror". - Kaveh L Afrasiabi

Posted by: GG 4.33 at July 29, 2006 04:18 PM
Just be careful. During the blackout in 77 the neighborhood was looted and burned. That was 30 years ago... To this day many businesses never returned. Those who left have since been replaced by recent Central American & Dominican immigrants. They've been rebuilding slowly. It's an old low income residential area with many crumbling brownstone townhouses and it's been that way forever. It's situated east of Williamsburg (Jewish & Puerto Rican) Greenpoint (Polish), north of Bed-Stuy (Black American). West of East New York (Black American) and south of Cypress Hills Queens (Black American). The most dominant characteristic of the area is the elevated train running down Broadway which roars overhead. The J & M trains. At night the area is dead. The neighborhood is dotted with corner bodega's, auto repair & body shops. Are you driving?

This is satellite imagery of the Haret Hreik quarter of Beirut, the Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut, before and after Israeli bombing. When the media talks about “strongholds” I often think of a building or bunker not an entire neighborhood. This just shows that Israel is bombing without regard or a care in the world for civilian life. They flattened entire city blocks to take out a few terrorists.

A Larger and More Powerful Rocket Hits Deeper in Israel, Adding a New Dimension
This new rocket fell into a field 30 miles inside Israel, presumably killing a few rabbits but doing little real harm.
This new "long range" rocket, even as it does no real damage, bolsters the case for Israel's "security zone", which if stretched to 30 miles would include the Litani river, taking that water from Lebanon and bringing it into Israel.
Which may provide the answer as to why Israel, if it is so worried about these "Hezbollah" rockets, isn't using those Patriot Missile batteries US taxpayers paid for to stop them!

Is Bush Trying to Dodge the Gallows?
Could George Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and maybe Alberto Gonzales all end up sucking poison gas?
That, apparently, is a concern now being taken seriously by Attorney General Gonzales, who is quietly working with senior White House officials and friendly members of Congress to do what murderous dictators in Chile, Argentina and other bloodthirsty regimes have done as their future in office began to look uncertain: pass laws exempting them from prosecution for murder.

Thing is - It's hot!
Do you really want to be on the subway or on the steets of Bushwick Brooklyn in this heat? Day time or not. People live there but I don't go there unless I have to because as far as I'm concerned there's nothing there.
I've tried repeatedly to tell you about this town. Through archived and recent news reports and oral histories. At this point I think I've posted enough info to put it all together.
Many of the people who used to live here were like those in the oral history I provided at the top of the string. They survived the depression & WWII. By the 60's they're kids were grown and they had grandchildren. The block busting & redlining chased most of them out. Before that it was not nervana nor a panacea either. There were crimes but not at the rate they occur today and murder was unusual. The Blackout in 1977 capped it. Parts of the city were severly affected and exist hobbled in the aftermath of that event.

Read this one very carefully, and send it along to everyone you know.
Bush is trying to legislate into existence the tribunals which the US Supreme Court declared unconstitutional just a month ago, only THIS time, the tribunals can seize a US citizen (that means YOU) and throw them in jail without explanation, where you will sit until the tribunal decides they can win a case and bring you to trial, or they decide they don't have any real evidence and just leave you there forever, as has already happened to many people in Guantanamo.
Just what is Bush planing to do that he thinks he will get this past the US Supreme Court?

FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: Locations and Executive Orders
There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general's signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft's list.

It is a common and popular practice to beat up on the Democrats for being too diverse to mount a cohesive campaign. "Like herding cats."
Republicans are perceived as cohesive. Even the separate groups within the party seem to work together to elect more Republicans.
It has occurred to me that the Republicans are no longer working toward a common goal. Most of the Republicans don't know that.
The Neoconservatives are making all of the policy decisions. The work-a-day Republicans are aware that mistakes are being made (how could they overlook Iraq, Katrina, Lebanon, etc.?) but they are unaware that they are being scammed.
The party faithful are in the trenches working to retain Republican power. The Neocons cheer them on, praise Jesus and give the secret G.O.P. handshake---they will do anything at all to keep the grunts working and themselves in power.
The Democrats are victims of their own diversity but the Republicans are victims of a Neoconservative con job.
While the Democrats bicker amongst themselves, the Republicans brag of their party strength, never realizing that their entire party has been suckered into working for the Neocons. Like any parasite, the Neocons will do lasting damage to their host.
It just goes to show that being disorganized and diverse is not necessarily as bad as being a well-oiled machine that is easily hijacked.

No diners in Bushwick. They generally don't want people to sit around. It causes problems. In the bodega's the owners sit behind plexiglass. They want you to get your shit, pay and get out. Cervesa, cigarettes, phone cards with the J train roaring overhead. There are a few Dominican restaurants that the locals patronize.

three scripts are needed to make one japanese sentence. two of them are used to render pronunciations straight out - i'm spacing on what those are called. japanese uses the original, more complex and traditional pictograms from early chinese. but the chinese now have abbreviated to increase literacy rates. a lot of those i can't read either.
but the other thing is the variety of fonts and styles among japanese kanji. i like the styles used in the 1920s and 1940s best. the newest ones are too high-tech feeling for my taste...can you show me an example, nobody?

Anyone who wants to write about the constitutional crisis unfolding in the United States today faces a peculiar problem at the outset. There is a large body of observations that at one and the same time have been made too often and yet not often enough - too often because they have been repeated to the point of tedium for a minority ready to listen, but not often enough because the general public has yet to consider them seriously enough.

COLORADO
SPRINGS - The military is relegating its newly renovated airspace and missile defense complex in Cheyenne Mountain to standby status.
Additional Resources...
The Denver Post
The U.S. Military announced Thursday it is moving NORAD out of Cheyenne Mountain. 9NEWS at 6 p.m. July 28, 2006.
That puts the future of a Cold War nerve center touted as the most secure spot in America very cloudy.
Our partners at The Denver Post reported late Thursday that the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) operations center will be moved to Peterson Air Force Base, home to the U.S. Northern Command created after the Sept. 11 attacks.
"I can't be in two places at one time," said Adm. Tim Keating, commander of both U.S. Northern Command, set up in 2002 to fight terrorism, and North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD.
U.S. strategists created the mountain complex to prevent nuclear missile and bomber attacks. But today the government's best intelligence "leads us to believe a missile attack from China or Russia is very unlikely," Keating said in an interview this week.
The emergence of varied terrorist threats such as suicide bombers "is what recommends to us that we don't need to maintain Cheyenne Mountain in a 24/7 status. We can put it on 'warm standby,"' Keating said.
Keating is scheduled to announce the decision he made after consulting with military chiefs in Washington. He'll move 230 surveillance crewmembers and an undetermined number of about 700 support staffers - as quickly and inexpensively as possible. The time frame: within two years.

Israel not looking for Syria fight, but still getting ready
Israel insists it is not looking for a fight with Syria, but is still taking precautions in case it becomes embroiled in a war with the neighbor it accuses of sponsoring Hezbollah.
I love the use of language in this article, particularly the phrase about "incase it becomes embroiled in a war with the neighbor it accuses of sponsoring Hezbullah".
Watch for some pretext (maybe the 'kidnapping' of an Israeli soldier somewhere near the Lebanese/Syrian border, to just start things rolling.
However, Israel - as does the west - need to remember one small factor: Syria and Iran have a mutual defense pact.
And the bigger question remains: what will Russia do if Israel decides to engage Syria and Iran?

KABUL, July 29 (Reuters) - NATO's expansion into southern Afghanistan will target drug warlords who are the root cause of growing violence, the force's commander said on Saturday.
NATO will embark on the biggest mission in its history on Monday when it takes over security from the U.S.-led coalition in six southern provinces, extending its authority to almost all of the country.
British Lieutenant-General David Richards said he hoped to see improvements in the south within three to six months, which would allow the 26-nation alliance to proceed with the final phase of its deployment into the east by the end of the year.
Afghanistan is going through the bloodiest phase of violence since the fall of the Taliban government in 2001, with most attacks occurring in the south.
Richards told a news conference in Kabul that the violence was inextricably linked to drugs.
"Essentially for the last four years some very brutal people have been developing their little fiefdoms down there and exporting a lot of opium to the rest of the world," he said.

Camp for disabled denied visas
A Connecticut camp for the disabled has sued the federal government, claiming it has unfairly been denied extended-stay visas for cultural exchange employees.
Camp Horizons provides programs for children and adults. Chris McNaboe told the Hartford (Conn.) Courant that bringing in people from overseas to work with campers helps people with disabilities, who are often denied the chance to travel, to find out about other countries.
The Department of Homeland Security approved 65 visas for summer counselors but rejected four applications for 15-month visas for potential employees from Estonia, Russia, South Africa and Zambia.
A DHS spokesman said cultural exchanges must be arranged through a school, museum or similar organization and the counselors were providing direct care, not just sharing their culture with people in camp programs, the newspaper reported.

Gibson reportedly banged himself against the seat, yelling threats at Mee: "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The purported field-arrest report reads, "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me."
Gibson then began making anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews ... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." He then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"
The encounter was audiotaped by Mee, according to the TMZ report.
Gibson also reportedly made a lewd comment to a female sergeant on the scene and had to be admonished that he could be charged with felony vandalism for slamming a telephone receiver at the detention facility.
Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ.com, has accused the L.A. Sheriff's Department of covering up for Gibson by initially reporting that the arrest had been "without incident."
Deputy Mee, Levin charged, was ordered to "sanitize" his report of the arrest to remove references to Gibson's anti-Semetic remarks. TMZ.com claims to have a copy of the original report. According to the Los Angeles Times, sheriff officials are refusing to release Gibson's arrest mugshot.

CAIRO, Egypt --A top Egyptian cleric issued an edict Saturday defending Hezbollah's fight against Israel, as Arab support for the militant group grew around the region.
Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa described Hezbollah strikes on Israel as "defense of its country and not terrorism," a position many saw as contradicting his country's official position.
"We are all against what is going on in Lebanon," Gomaa said, describing the Israeli attack on Lebanon and the killings of civilians as an "injustice."
The grand mufti issues religious edicts that are binding for Sunni Muslims in Egypt.
Around the Arab world, popular support for the Lebanese people and Hezbollah continued to expand as newspapers and television stations showed graphic images of civilian casualties.
Qatar-based Sheik Youssef el-Qaradawi, one of the Arab world's most prominent Sunni religious scholars, issued a religious edict Thursday saying support for the guerrillas was "a religious duty of every Muslim."
At least 458 Lebanese have been killed in the fighting that broke out after Hezbollah kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others July 12 after a cross-border raid. Most casualties have been civilians, and some estimates range as high as 600 dead.
Thirty-three Israeli soldiers have died in the fighting, and Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel have killed 19 civilians, the Israeli army said.
In Kuwait's Al-Qabas daily, columnist Abdel al-Tukhaim wrote that while he was not a "Hezbollah supporter," he now admired the group following the "destructive punishment" Israel dealt Lebanon because of "two soldiers who could have died in a traffic accident."
"In three major wars with Israel ... no Arab country was able to hit deep into Israel or hurt it the way Hezbollah, or the Lebanese resistance did," al-Tukhaim wrote. "They broke the psychological barrier our armies and regimes had and proved to us that the third strongest army in the world was a myth."
The Cairo-based daily al Ahrar commended Hezbollah on its fighting in the towns of Bint Jbail and Maroun al-Ras, sites of some of the fiercest battles since the conflict began.
"Hezbollah fighters have p

"Hezbollah fighters have proved what their leader Hassan Nasrallah has already promised that losing a battle doesn't mean losing the war, and that there are other surprises awaiting Israel," the newspaper said.
Meanwhile, political analyst Ayed al-Mannah wrote in Kuwait's Al-Watan daily that Hezbollah "deserves more Arab and Muslim admiration for standing up to the most mighty regional power in the Middle East."
He said Hezbollah and Hamas have proven to be stronger than the Lebanese and Palestinian governments.
"I wonder: Wouldn't it be better for a weak or impotent government to give up its legal rights in favor of those who are more capable of running the country and providing security and justice to the people?" al-Mannah wrote.
Four Dubai-owned television stations said a Friday telethon had raised $13.4 million for the Lebanese people, some 750,000 of whom have been left homeless since fighting broke out.
During the telethon, Jordan's Queen Rania told the Lebanese people: "Your children are our children. Your wounds are our wounds. Your house is our house."
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said in remarks released Friday that Israel's response was "disproportionate, to say the least," though he also has criticized Hezbollah for triggering the crisis.

A strike outside the market town of Nabatiyeh crushed a house, killing a woman and her five children, and a man in a nearby house, Lebanese security officials said. Elsewhere, six bodies were dug from the rubble of a house destroyed Friday in the town of Ain Arab, they said.
In the southern port city of Tyre, volunteers buried 31 victims of the bombardment in a mass grave. Among the line of plywood coffins was a tiny one holding the body of a 1-day-old girl.

Dear Jerome,
Republicans have a record of dealing with some serious economic times during my presidency. We have had a recession, a stock market collapse, terrorist attacks, corporate scandals and major natural disasters.
Because Republicans acted and had an economic recovery plan, we have created strong economic growth and nearly 5.3 million new jobs in the last two and half years; the national unemployment rate has dropped to 4.6% -- that is lower than the average rate of the 1960s, 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s; productivity is up and household net worth is at an all-time high.Republicans understand that by cutting taxes people will have more of their own money to save, spend and invest as they see fit, not as the government wants. So our Party and GOP members of the U.S. Congress stood squarely for tax relief for everybody who pays taxes. We have a lot of work to do to make sure America remains a prosperous country, so that every single citizen can realize the great promise of America.
That is why your support as a Sustaining Member of the Republican National Committee is vital to our Party's success in the 2006 mid-term elections.Jerome, nothing threatens our hard-won reforms and economic prosperity more than a Democrat victory this November.Today, many Democrats want the tax relief we passed to expire in a few years. Some even want to repeal it now.The Democrat Party has a clear record when it comes to taxes. In 2001, more than 71% of the congressional Democrats voted against cutting income tax rates. More than 90% of the Congressional Democrats voted against a bill that provided tax relief for married couples.More than 71% of Democrats voted against a bill that would have put the death tax on the road to extinction. More than 71% of Democrats voted against a bill that doubled the child credit. In 2003, more than 96% of the Congressional Democrats voted against cutting taxes on dividends and capital gains. And recently, during the budget debate, Democrats used the occasion to call for $173 billion in tax hikes and fee increases. The difference is clear: if you want the government in your pocket, vote Democrat. If you want to keep more of your hard-earned money, vote Republican.
Posted by: ecrasez l'infame at July 29, 2006 7:35 PM
Republicans have the right ideas to keep our economy growing strong. The first thing is to make the tax cuts permanent.
Republicans are also working to cut the deficit. The best way to reduce the deficit is to keep pro-growth economic policies in place, and be wise about how we spend your money -- which is exactly what Republicans are doing in Washington. We are on our way to cut the deficit in half by 2009.
But to do that, Jerome, we must re-elect Republican majorities to the U.S. House and U.S. Senate.
Our GOP candidates need your support. Please send a contribution of $100, $50 or $25 to the RNC today to help elect more Republicans in 2006. You can make your donation on the RNC's secure website at www.GOP.com/Sustaining/c.
We have made remarkable progress enacting our bold, responsible agenda for America in the last five and a half years. Working together, we can continue to keep our nation moving forward to greater peace, prosperity and security.
Sincerely,
George W. Bush
P.S. Jerome, the 2006 elections will be close. Your support is critical to providing the resources our Republican candidates need to win. Please visit this secure website to send the RNC a special contribution of $100, $50 or $25 today. Thank you.

The discussion mentioned that during WWI dissenting opinions were supressed. I guess they were referring to the red scare and Palmer raids. In the lead up to WWII they were concerned about that. They saw the threat in Spain with Franco.
Some sounded the alarm. A few broke the law, went to Spain and supported the republic. Some lost their lives fighting there too. Those who returned were labeled premature anti-fasicist. In the 50's they were blacklisted by McCarthy's HUAC committee hearings.
And that's what motivated those students on the campus at Berkeley in the sixties..

There was a draft. The U.S. wasn't attacked.
Men were being told to kill and were being killed in large numbers.
Coalitions were built between the antiwar movement and other organizations; civil rights, women liberation, enviornmental groups, labor organizations, etc. Individuals within the news media were less prone to censor themselves and the government had less control over them.
Members of the government blamed everyone but themselves and there was no one else to blame but themselves..

This documentary is the second in Fox's documentary series titled The Past Present. Here is his summary of the program: "Almost everyone has heard of [Nicola] Sacco and [Bartolomeo] Vanzetti, two Italian-born anarchists who were executed in 1927 for a crime they probably didn't commit--a payroll robbery and double murder in South Braintree, Massachusetts. What most people don't know, however, is that Nicola Sacco and Bartholomeo Vanzetti were part of a group of revolutionaries that conducted a bombing campaign against government officials, including Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer and Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Historian Nunzio Pernicone discusses the anarchist background of Sacco and Vanzetti. Then Pernicone, joined by historian Richard Polenberg, examine the world-famous case that tore this country apart in the 1920s. The program includes historical audio of men involved in the case, Italian anarchist songs, Woody Guthrie ballads, and actors Joe Grifasi and Spiro Malas reading from Sacco and Vanzetti's Moving prison letters."

An Israeli missile strike has hit the main Lebanese border crossing into Syria, forcing its closure for the first time in the 18-day-old conflict.
Jets fired three missiles at the Masnaa crossing, which lies about 300 metres beyond a Lebanese customs post.
...
The passage has been an escape route for tens of thousands of Lebanese, who fled by land to Syria after Israel bombed Beirut airport in the first days of fighting.
It was also a gateway for humanitarian aid entering the country.

I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel -- Six shot, one killed at Seattle Jewish Federation
By CAROL SMITH, PHUONG CAT LE AND AMY ROLPH
P-I REPORTERS
On the eve of the Jewish Sabbath, a 30-year-old man claiming he was upset about "what was going on in Israel" opened fire at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle building, killing one person and wounding five women, one of them pregnant.
Three of the women were in critical condition Friday night with gunshot wounds to the stomach.
The gunman, brandishing a large-caliber semi-automatic pistol, forced his way through the security door at the federation, on Third Avenue downtown, after an employee had punched in her security code.
"He said, 'I am a Muslim American, angry at Israel,' before opening fire on everyone," said Marla Meislin-Dietrich, a database coordinator for the center. "He was randomly shooting at everyone."
The man was booked into King County Jail at 10:38 p.m. as Naveed Afzal Haq on one count of investigation of homicide and five counts of investigation of attempted homicide, according to King County Jail records.
The man apparently was from the Tri-Cities area, and authorities there confirmed Friday night that they had visited two residences in the area and were preparing to go into a third with the assistance of the FBI. A bomb squad was standing by in Kennewick. Local media reported he had a misdemeanor lewd conduct charge pending in Benton County. He allegedly exposed himself in a public place.
The shootings come just weeks after Jewish leaders told Congress that there was a "critical threat" to their institutions nationwide because of escalating tensions in the Middle East.

I've always admired the WWII generation more than the Baby Boomers, and certainly more than Generation X.
They seemed to understand more about life and the way things are instead of boomers and Xers, who prefer to live in fantasy lands and be smug and arrogant about mostly everything.
I really like old Hollywood films. I trash American films a lot, but I really dig the older stuff. Dialogue was better, they were smarter films, and the women's roles were much better written than they are today. Film/art/culture started going in the toilet right around when Reagan came into office...

Disowning Conservative Politics Is Costly for an Evangelical Pastor
Published: July 30, 2006
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — Like most pastors who lead thriving evangelical megachurches, the Rev. Gregory A. Boyd was asked frequently to give his blessing — and the church’s — to conservative political candidates and causes.
The requests came from church members and visitors alike: Would he please announce a rally against gay marriage during services? Would he introduce a politician from the pulpit? Could members set up a table in the lobby promoting their anti-abortion work? Would the church distribute “voters’ guides” that all but endorsed Republican candidates? And with the country at war, please couldn’t the church hang an American flag in the sanctuary?
After refusing each time, Mr. Boyd finally became fed up, he said. Before the last presidential election, he preached six sermons called “The Cross and the Sword” in which he said the church should steer clear of politics, give up moralizing on sexual issues, stop claiming the United States as a “Christian nation” and stop glorifying American military campaigns.
“When the church wins the culture wars, it inevitably loses,” Mr. Boyd preached. “When it conquers the world, it becomes the world. When you put your trust in the sword, you lose the cross.”
Mr. Boyd says he is no liberal. He is opposed to abortion and thinks homosexuality is not God’s ideal. The response from his congregation at Woodland Hills Church here in suburban St. Paul — packed mostly with politically and theologically conservative, middle-class evangelicals — was passionate. Some members walked out of a sermon and never returned. By the time the dust had settled, Woodland Hills, which Mr. Boyd founded in 1992, had lost about 1,000 of its 5,000 members.
But there were also congregants who thanked Mr. Boyd, telling him they were moved to tears to hear him voice co

Two UN peacekeepers wounded by air strike in Lebanon
Two Indian soldiers with the U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon were wounded and their observation post damaged by an Israeli air strike on Saturday, a U.N. spokesman said.
Milos Strugar, spokesman for the UNIFL force, said the two had been evacuated to hospital. He said the observation post inside their position had been damaged.
Last week, an Israeli air raid killed four U.N. observers, an attack that U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said was "apparently deliberate". Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed his sorrow and ordered a probe but said the U.N. position was not targeted intentionally.
Israel has been pounding targets in southern Lebanon since Hizbollah guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight in a cross-border raid 18 days ago.

Israelis edge closer to war with Syria
Israel and Syria appeared to be edging closer to direct military confrontation last night after tit-for-tat attacks around the Lebanese border and the revelation that a new type of long-range missile fired into Israel by Hezbollah was built in Syria.
Tension between the two countries over the war in Lebanon was growing as both Tel Aviv and Damascus readied their forces for the possibility of a direct clash. Israeli intelligence reported that Syrian forces had been put onto their highest state of alert, while Israel has called up 15,000 reservists who many believe will be despatched as reinforcements to the disputed Golan Heights, between the two countries.
Last night an explosives expert with the Israeli police concluded that the "unknown" missile fired by the pro-Syrian Hezbollah at the town of Afula on Friday, 30 miles inside the Israeli border, was Syrian-made, and was capable of reaching Tel Aviv, the country's largest city.
Earlier in the day, Israeli warplanes struck Masnaa, the main crossing point between Lebanon and Syria, with three missiles leaving craters in the middle of the road, forcing the border to close. Witnesses said the Israelis targeted and destroyed the last building before the Syrian border.

Domestic Accidents; Self-Immolation Kill More Kurds than War
In the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, which has seen little of the sectarian violence plaguing much of the rest of the country, doctors say they treat more people burned in household incidents than injured by explosives. Many of the patients at one specialized hospital are women who doctors say have set themselves on fire in suicide attempts. A higher number are children, who are injured in domestic accidents.
A terrible phenomenon is manifesting itself in Kurdish society here. Women who have problems with their husbands, parents or in-laws are attempting suicide by setting themselves on fire. In the largely patriarchal society, women have few rights, are often illiterate, and often have no one to turn to for help.
At the Emergency Management Center in Irbil, head surgeon Dr. Husen Ibrahim Taha says the mortality rate among these types of burn victims is extremely high.
"Most of them die, unfortunately, because most of the burns are big burns, more than 70, 80, 90 percent ," he said. "Most of them are above 90 percent, because they use kerosene or gasoline to burn themselves."

Shooting suspect was baptized --
Just part of the enigma he proved himself to friends
By SCOTT GUTIERREZ
P-I REPORTER
RICHLAND -- Those who knew Naveed Haq said Saturday that to them he was an enigma, a puzzle that they wish they could have solved before his deadly rampage in a Seattle Jewish center.
Stunned and saddened by the news, some of Haq's acquaintances recounted many of what they saw as the contradictions of his life.
He held a degree in electrical engineering and was the son of a successful engineer, yet he couldn't keep a regular job. He was smart, creative and skilled as a writer. He recently won an essay contest for a U.S. Institute of Peace scholarship.
Yet Haq was frustrated at his lack of friends and female companionship. He told friends he felt alienated from his own family, in part because his career had disappointed his father and also because he had disavowed Islam last year, converting to Christianity.
Haq had begun studying the Bible, attending weekly men's spiritual group meetings, only to stop coming a few months after his baptism.
He had told the group's leader that he seen too much anger in Islam and that he wanted to find a new beginning in Christianity.
Yet in the midst of his shooting spree in Seattle Friday, he declared himself an angry Muslim.

Pregnant lady’ is a hero – twice
By ROBERT L. JAMIESON Jr.
P-I COLUMNIST
In news accounts she's been called "the pregnant lady."
People close to her say she would be a bit miffed by such a clipped, if apropos, moniker.
Let's call Dayna Klein something else: Seattle hero.
Klein, who survived being shot by a gunman who forced his way into the downtown offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle on Friday, is actually a hero twice over.
When the gunman, identified as Naveed Afzal Haq, fired a semi-automatic her way, Klein moved her arm toward her womb in an act of maternal defense. The bullet struck her arm, authorities say, likely preventing possible harm from coming to her unborn child.
That was the first heroic act.
Her second came when Klein defied Haq. As Haq scanned the office space he warned terrified people not to call 911. But "that's what she did," Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske said, referring to Klein.
Klein, 37, crawled back to an office in the building.
She got on a phone. She dialed emergency dispatchers.
Haq caught up with her -- and saw her on the phone.

The Associated Press is now reporting that Naveed Afzal Haq, the Muslim accused of a shooting rampage at the Seattle Jewish Federation, hid behind a potted plant and then ambushed a 13-year old girl to gain entrance to the facility:
Seattle suspect allegedly ambushed girl.
SEATTLE - The man suspected in a fatal shooting rampage hid behind a potted plant in a Jewish charity’s foyer and forced his way through a security door by holding a gun to a 13-year-old girl’s head, authorities said Saturday.
Once inside, police say, Naveed Afzal Haq opened fire with two semiautomatic pistols. One woman, Pam Waechter, 58, of Seattle was killed at the scene. Five more women were wounded.
Haq, 30, was ordered held on $50 million bail Saturday pending formal charges of murder and attempted murder. Haq, a Muslim, told authorities he was angered by the war in Iraq and U.S. military cooperation with Israel.
“He pointedly blamed Jewish people for all of these problems,” Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske said at a news conference Saturday.
According to a statement of probable cause, Haq told a 911 dispatcher: “These are Jews and I’m tired of getting pushed around and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East.”
Muhammad Ullah, a close family friend and a senior member of a mosque founded in part by Haq’s father, described Haq as a quiet loner with few friends.
In a statement, the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities offered condolences to the shooting victims and said “we disassociate this act from our Islamic teachings and beliefs.”

P-I REPORTER
It seemed a simple idea: two high school girls who wanted to start a Bible club at Kentridge High School. But the once-quiet grumbling over their Christians-only membership plan has now erupted into a full-scale federal case.
Dan DeLong / P-I
Sarice Undis, left, and Julianne Stewart sued their school, Kentridge High, several years ago after their Bible club proposal met resistance.
On Thursday, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, meeting in Seattle, sat rapt as lawyers argued on the one hand for religious freedom and, on the other, against allowing discrimination in a public school district.
Five years ago, when Sarice Undis, a senior at Kentridge, and Julianne Stewart, a junior, approached the student body that charters clubs, they could never have dreamed that "Truth in Bible" would create such an uproar.

Israeli forces kill Islamic Jihad leader:
NABLUS, West Bank - Israeli troops killed a top leader of the radical Islamic Jihad in a West Bank raid Saturday, the group said, and the Israelis pressed ahead with their offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Islamic Jihad said the leader of its militant wing in Nablus, Hani Awijan, 29, was killed by Israeli undercover troops. They came to arrest him while he was playing soccer with friends and relatives, the group said. Another Islamic Jihad militant was also killed.
The army confirmed soldiers operated in Nablus and said a militant was killed in an exchange of fire.
Israel Radio said Awijan was responsible for a series of attacks on Israelis. Over the past 17 months, Islamic Jihad has been responsible for all 12 suicide bombing attacks in Israel, killing 71 people.
Islamic Jihad announced Awijan’s death from mosque loudspeakers.

Eastern Parkway & Utica Ave. is the place in the 30's where they said they used to meet to protest the fascist. It's a big wide intersection in Crown Heights Brooklyn. A 2 way 3 lane street with service lanes in both directions. To this day the sidewalks have benches. Eastern Pkwy. ends at Grand Army Plaza by Prospect Park about a mile away. There's a subway stop on the corner of Utica too. They probably used to meet there to hand out pamphlets. There may have been a cafeteria there too. They said the church across the street complained and that it was connected to the fascist church in Spain. That church is still there.

Iran is preparing for war: ‘This war is our war’
A former CSIS informant who once kept tabs on terrorists says the Iranian regime is “mentally and spiritually” preparing its people for war against Israel.
The Ottawa man, now in Tehran, says the hate campaign against Israel is “everywhere” on the streets of the capital.
“It is not good. It is sad,” he told the Citizen.
“There are posters at intersections of (Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah) saying Israel must be erased from the map.”
Opponents of the Iranian government in Canada say they have received similar reports describing huge posters of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, hardline president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Hezbollah leader alongside the slogan: “This war is our war.”

FRANK RICH : The Peculiar Disappearance of the War in Iraq
AS America fell into the quagmire of Vietnam, the comedian Milton Berle joked that the fastest way to end the war would be to put it on the last-place network, ABC, where it was certain to be canceled. Berle’s gallows humor lives on in the quagmire in Iraq. Americans want this war canceled too, and first- and last-place networks alike are more than happy to oblige.
CNN will surely remind us today that it is Day 19 of the Israel-Hezbollah war — now branded as Crisis in the Middle East — but you won’t catch anyone saying it’s Day 1,229 of the war in Iraq. On the Big Three networks’ evening newscasts, the time devoted to Iraq has fallen 60 percent between 2003 and this spring, as clocked by the television monitor, the Tyndall Report. On Thursday, Brian Williams of NBC read aloud a “shame on you” e-mail complaint from the parents of two military sons anguished that his broadcast had so little news about the war.
This is happening even as the casualties in Iraq, averaging more than 100 a day, easily surpass those in Israel and Lebanon combined. When Nouri al-Maliki, the latest Iraqi prime minister, visited Washington last week to address Congress, he too got short TV shrift — a mere five sentences about the speech on ABC’s “World News.” The networks know a rerun when they see it. Only 22 months earlier, one of Mr. Maliki’s short-lived predecessors, Ayad Allawi, had come to town during the 2004 campaign to give a similarly empty Congressional address laced with White House-scripted talking points about the war’s progress. Propaganda stunts, unlike “Law & Order” episodes, don’t hold up on a second viewing........

maybe even a genious.
but he wasn't an upper tier gutar player.
His lyrics are far from timeless..the majority can't even be describes a serious...closer to trivial (Suzy Cream Cheese?) in most cases.
not to say he wasn't gifted, he truly was.
but compared to Slint, the guy was an obscure hack.

Hezbollah Chief Lobs Threats at Israel
BEIRUT, Lebanon — Hezbollah's leader on Saturday threatened more attacks on central Israeli cities, a day after guerrillas for the first time fired a rocket powerful enough to reach the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
The bearded Shiite Muslim cleric, wearing his trademark black headdress, insisted Hezbollah fighters were winning the battle with Israel, now in its 18th day. Israel has not made a "single military accomplishment" in its offensive on Lebanon, he said, speaking on the group's Al-Manar television.
On Friday, a Hezbollah rocket hit outside the Israeli town of Afula, the farthest strike yet. Hezbollah said it targeted an Israeli military base, but the rockets fell in an empty field.
"The bombardment of Afula and its military base is the beginning ..., Nasrallah said. "Many cities in the center (of Israel) will be targeted in the 'beyond Haifa' stage if the savage aggression continues on our country, people and villages."

I would classify what I post as "distraction" (with a small leavening of snark), but I definitely wouldn't classify most of the videos that get posted here as such.
Do you watch any of the videos that get posted here? Most of them seem oriented to social or political activism, although not usually directly related to AAR.

We meet "Hussein" at his home and sit down to talk in his living room, while his four-month-old baby daughter lies on a blanket on the floor. He is in his late 20s and has a calm face. He is polite but has a resolute sense about him that creates a cautious distance. Like many fighters, he says, he has another job and only joins the militia when he's needed.
"I have a job to do and if the Israelis want to come inside," he says, "then we'll do our job and defend our families."
He shows me what he will use to defend them. In a closet in an adjoining bedroom he reaches into the top shelf and pulls out a green shoulder harness full of ammunition clips.
Then, from the corner of the closet, next to some shirts on hangers, he pulls out an American-made M-16 assault rifle and places it on the mattress in the room next to the ammo belt. He goes back to the closet and from the same corner reaches for a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and two canvas shoulder bags. He places these on the bed as well.
I ask if nearly every house in the neighborhood has a stash of small arms like this.
"Some have more," he says, pulling an AK-47 from one of the canvas bags and locking on a 30 round banana clip, named for its banana-like curve. "But the larger weaponry is kept somewhere else."

I saw an interview with Dennis Rodman after a Bulls victory a number of years ago. It was live, and Corey McPherrin (a local Chicago sports anchor) said to Rodman "hey, there's your buddy, Eddie Vedder". Vedder came from behind a black curtain, totally stoned, drunk, whatever, and looked pissed and told Rodman "come on, we got to party." (or words to that effect)...

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

Fear to bring children

Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood

How much do I know

You might say that I'm young

But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I'll stand o'er your grave

East-West is a 1966 album by The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Its title track is a long improvisational instrumental piece inspired by blues, jazz fusion and raga that was considered groundbreaking at the time of release. Like the debut, the album features the traditional blues covers and the guitar work of Mike Bloomfield, who had just recorded Highway 61 Revisited with Bob Dylan. "Mary, Mary," written by Mike Nesmith would later be recorded by The Monkees.

Vedder came from behind a black curtain, totally stoned, drunk, whatever, and looked pissed and told Rodman "come on, we got to party." (or words to that effect)...
Didn't like him much after that...

If Mr. Lieberman had once stood up and taken the lead in saying that there were some places a president had no right to take his country even during a time of war, neither he nor this page would be where we are today. But by suggesting that there is no principled space for that kind of opposition, he has forfeited his role as a conscience of his party, and has forfeited our support.
Mr. Lamont, a wealthy businessman from Greenwich, seems smart and moderate, and he showed spine in challenging the senator while other Democrats groused privately. He does not have his opponent’s grasp of policy yet. But this primary is not about Mr. Lieberman’s legislative record. Instead it has become a referendum on his warped version of bipartisanship, in which the never-ending war on terror becomes an excuse for silence and inaction. We endorse Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary for Senate in Connecticut.

Hunger Strike Activists Arrested Outside of White House
Saturday July 29, 2006 2:12pm
Washington (AP) - A group of five anti-war activists on a hunger strike have been arrested after they blocked the entrance to the White House during Saturday's meeting between President Bush (website - news - bio) and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Among those arrested was 58-year-old Diane Wilson, a co-founder of Code Pink who has been on a hunger strike for 25 days. Two other people arrested were also members of the group that has been using the hunger strike in Lafayette Park to protest the war in Iraq.
The group was issued a permit by U.S. Park Police earlier this month, but Park Police spokesman Scott Fear says the permit was revoked Saturday after the protesters refused to move from the entrance.
The group was then arrested for demonstrating without a permit and each person was issued a $50 citation.

No you don't...
Look I post music here...I post videos...I post pictures...look at the first in each category it was probably me that posted it...but there is a serious bias against anyone posting anything like "news" or on a "controversial subject" because it might bum someone out or start and argument...Unless of course they're a preapproved personage...
I thought it interesting both Chubs criticism and the response...It was quite delicious to the see that particular shoe on that particular foot.
You know why those people never get trolled?...Because the trolls like them doing exactly what they're doing...filling up space with pap.
Now honestly...both of the people that are posting it post other stuff too...Mat in particular posts a lot of useful and relevent material...but now...I wonder if those same people even listen to this show...

I like late nights...I like the music...It's a matter of illustrating the extreme...
You take a look at the different people posting news stories lately?...
A whole different set of people have picked it up...Why do you suppose they have?

Frank Rich, one of our most perceptive intellectuals, points to the odd downplaying of Iraq news what with the advent of the Israel-Lebanon crisis. But Rich is being a little unfair. If they tried to cover two important issues like Iraq and Israel-Lebanon, the television news producers would ask, how could they fit in the missing white women and the small town murder mysteries?

Because it's not bad enough that people who own goats burn their horns off....& that is considered ok..
ALF Liberate Goats from British Military Labs
The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) have broken into a military research centre and taken a group of goats that were due to be part of painful experiments.
According to a communiqué released by the individual cell responsible: "How many times have we heard that a job is impossible? That’s exactly what we thought when we heard about diving experiments being carried out for the navy by QinetiQ at the Centre for Human Sciences. Experience however has taught us that where there is a will, there’s a way."
Nine members of the ALF each took a goat and made off across a golf course to a waiting van. The group said it decided to take action after having received information that the animals are used for decompression tests by QinetiQ, which runs the Centre for Human Sciences.
"We had a tight time-scale, as reconnaissance had revealed this to be a busy area, surrounded by military bases. The difficult decision had been taken to only bring in one removal van, as loading any more in this area was going to bring it on top. Once dusk had settled we went to work, cutting through the perimeter fence of the ex-MOD base. Within minutes we had gained access to the goat enclosure and began rounding up the smaller animals."
The communiqué goes onto to say that "the nine beautiful young goats all made it safely to their new homes, where they can live out the rest of their natural lives free from a crushing death in the hyperbaric chamber."

The mere fact that it has been scheduled pays tribute to the growing strength of our 9/11 truth movement.
I urge you to build the maximum audience for this important event, which represents our best opportunity of counteracting the escalation of the Middle East and North Korean crises towards thermonuclear World War III, by means a strong dose of 9/11 truth.
I call upon each of you to put aside other considerations for the next 48 hours and to mobilize all available forces to make this a turning point in world history. Let it be seen by 100,000,000 Americans, and we can turn the world back from the brink of the abyss.

Why do we say nothing ?
Why do we do nothing ?
Why do we let the fascist war monger Bush Inc.
turn things upside down while saying this is a
new way of doing things and it's really
right side up ?
You stop the death and destruction first and
then you negotiate terms for peace.
How can we let these monsters say that the
death and destruction must go on and it will
then build a "lasting peace" ?!
Apparently this is what Bush Inc. calls
an opportunity for a lasting peace.

The anger erupted after an Israeli bombing raid killed 21 children and dozens of adults as they slept in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Lebanese media reported that dozens of people remain trapped inside the three-storey building which was sheltering several families, some of whom had fled the Israeli bombardment of the Lebanese coastal town of Tyre.
Yasir Abu Hilala, Aljazeera's correspondent in Qana, said aid workers had only managed to pull out three people alive.
Efforts to get the wounded to hospital have been hampered as all roads around Qana have been destroyed by Israeli air strikes, he said.

MIT scientists create fiber webs that see
In a radical departure from conventional lens-based optics, MIT scientists have developed a sophisticated optical system made of mesh-like webs of light-detecting fibers. The fiber constructs, which have a number of advantages over their lens-based predecessors, are currently capable of measuring the direction, intensity and phase of light (a property used to describe a light wave) without the lenses, filters or detector arrays that are the classic elements of optical systems such as eyes or cameras.
Ultimately the researchers expect the new system will be capable of much more, with potential applications ranging from improved space telescopes to clothing that provides situational awareness to soldiers or even the visually impaired.

NSF Launches Distributed Data Analysis of Neutron Scattering
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded nearly $12 million to the California Institute of Technology for computer software to analyze neutron-scattering experiments. The work could show how to design new materials for a huge variety of applications in transportation, construction, electronics and space exploration.
The five-year Distributed Data Analysis for Neutron Scattering Experiments (DANSE) project is led by Brent Fultz, a professor of materials science and applied physics at Caltech, with co-principal investigators Michael A. G. Aivazis of the Center for Advanced Computing Research at Caltech, and Ian S. Anderson of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Neutron scattering is a method of analyzing the stability of materials, molecules, and condensed matter at various temperatures and pressures by looking at the positions and motions of the atoms that make up the materials. According to Fultz, the research will find the principles behind how atoms can be combined to form stable materials and will eventually show how new materials could be optimized for characteristics such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, energy storage and corrosion resistance.

Condi Rice a diplimatic booger.
Bush and Rice had repeatedly stated the position that a ceasefire was not in the cards.
They kept supporting Israel's "right to defend themselves", and at teh saem time shipping more weapons to Israel.
Soem of the weapons were "smuggled" via a Scottish civil airport, even as demonstrations were going on at the airport.
Bush was forced to issue an apology to UK for this.
Adn in the middel of Rice trying "shuttle diplomacy", where US supportred a non-cease fire position, Israel leveled villages in South lebanon to teh grouns, including a building that sheltered hundreds of civilians, killing more than 50 civilians in one attack.
Rice had to cancel her planned trip to Lebanon, because she became a persona non grata.
How about that? Being Persona Non grata in one of the most moderate of the middle east countries.
On the home front (USA) the pictuyre is different. FIX is drumming on the War drums, alleging indisputable evidence that Iran is behind it all, and the president says Syria is behind it all.
And lo and behold, documents emerge that shows Israel had planned this escalation for years, with US' knowing approval. The same traitors that were behind teh Iraq sham was involved here, too, such as Richard Pearl and Wolfowitz.
If Rice had not preached against ceasefire, maybe some of the latest massacres could have been avoided. It si very clear that the reson they did not want a cease fire, is not that they needed to to have the kidnapped soldiers return. The reason is that they wanted more time to kill more Hizbollah.
Since there is no way to know the what-if's we cannot claim that Rice has this blood on her hands, but it is for sure that she must be a most unusual monster if she can get a good night's sleep after this.
The really weird hing in all of this, is that both Hizbollah and Hamas were partly a product of Isreali intelligence work. Hamas was enccouraged, in an attempt to weaken Fatah, adn divide and conquer the Palestinians, and Hizbollah were created fro similar purposes.
The lesson is:
If you nurture evil to create some good, you end up with triple ev

"Killing people is like squashing an ant:" former US soldier (Pfc. Green)
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A former US soldier accused of raping and murdering an Iraqi girl compared killing people in Iraq to "squashing an ant," in an interview with a reporter about a month before the attack.
Steven Green, 21, a former private with the 101st Airborne Division, is under arrest in Kentucky and could face the death penalty if convicted of the March 12 murders of the Iraqi girl and three of her relatives.
Writing in Sunday's editions of The Washington Post, Andrew Tilghman, a former correspondent for the US military newspaper Stars and Stripes, said he interviewed Green several times in February at his unit south of Baghdad.
"I came over here because I wanted to kill people," he quoted Green as saying. "The truth is, it wasn't all I thought it was cracked up to be.
"I mean, I thought killing somebody would be this life-changing experience," Green was quoted as saying. "And then I did it, and I was like, 'All right, whatever.'
"I shot a guy who wouldn't stop when we were out at a traffic checkpoint and it was like nothing," Green was quoted as saying. "Over here, killing people is like squashing an ant.
"I mean, you kill somebody and it's like, 'All right, let's go get some pizza.'"

Propagandists rely on two things
peoples inclination to avoid inconvenient truths
and to accept convenient lies.
All of the fascist media proganda brothels
know this and make use of it each and every
moment of air time.
CNN on their Sat. morning show today said
the film footage of the Qana bombing the
Arab news broadcasters were showing was
too horrific and graphic for CNN's viewers.
What the flyin' f**k ?!
I guess the Israeli slaughter and destruction
of southern Lebanon is a lot more palatable
if you don't show dead kids, blown to
smithereens, crushed and covered with concrete
dust being pulled out of the carnage ?
The inconvenient truth is we are ruled by
hideous war mongers that refuse to bring this
to an immediate halt and the convenient lie
is the reality of this horror can't be shown
because then you will know the thing
for what it is.

STOP THE CONFIRMATION OF JOHN BOLTON AS UNITED NATIONS AMBASSADOR!
ACTION PAGE:
http://www.usalone.com/stacey/pnum432.php
Friends, once again, John Bolton, most unqualified appointee of the Bush Administration, is up for confirmation as United Nations Ambassador. When he was refused confirmation the first time, President Bush took the highly unusual step of making a temporary Senior Level appointment while Congress was in recess. Now that period has expired and John Bolton, is once again up for confirmation by the United State Senate and faces serious opposition.
Since the under-handed recess appointment to the UN, he has alienated our allies, stripped every opportunity for diplomacy in favor of confrontation and even fought with our own State Department, undermining the already weak Secretary of State. John Bolton is a dangerous US Diplomat as he doesn't believe in diplomacy! How can we allow such an appointment to stand?
Thanks to your generous donations I have been running call to action radio spots for a couple weeks already, calling for our troops to come home from Iraq now. People in my district are responding to those spots by speaking out themselves. I have already recorded a new anti-Bolton radio commercial. As a Congressional Candidate, I intend to build as much immediate public support as possible to stop this appointment by airing that commercial. It is especially important in my state of Louisiana where we need the vote of Senator Landrieu to sustain a filibuster. You can help, truthfully, with a donation. (You'll hear the commercial after you send your letter to Congress opposing John Bolton and, after hearing it, make your own choice.) Your letter is the most important thing of all!
When you hear President Bush say, "We cannot change the Ambassador at the UN in the midst of this International Emergency," remember that he also said, "Good job, Brownie," to Michael Brown as my city of New Orleans drowned. This is not the time for "Good job, John!", while the innocents of two nations are blown up daily in Israel and Lebanon. Perhaps if we had a real diplomat at the UN

Professor of Propaganda
The Lies of Alan Dershowitz
By RACHARD ITANI
"In a characteristic op-ed, titled "Arithmetic of Pain", that would surprise neither his supporters nor his critics, published by the Wall Street Journal on 19 July 2006, Alan Dershowitz sinks to new lows of depravity and inhumanity in his long-standing hate-mongering and truth-twisting anti-Arab, pro-Israel crusade.
One need not go beyond the first paragraph to be hit by a dose of Dershowitz's typically one-sided, see-no-evil/hear-no-evil attitude when he tackles Israel-related subjects and issues. This eternally unbalanced pro-Israel disposition on his part does Israel no good, for it shows him to be a fundamentalist who has no time for truth and facts. His extremism therefore diminishes greatly the value of any "support" he may providing to Israel.
Dershowitz's first sentence gives his game away: "There is no democracy in the world that should tolerate missiles being fired at its cities without taking every reasonable step to stop the attacks." Anyone remotely familiar with Dershowitz's writings would know that he considers only Israel to be a Middle-Eastern democracy. This erroneous view is shared and perpetrated by most of the corporate Western media, and a distressingly large percentage of the American public.
