WILL KATHERINE HARRIS GO DOWN?

from Josh Marshall:

Cunningham briber Mitchell Wade really does appear to be becoming a gold mine of information for federal prosecutors.

In recently filed court documents, prosecutors and Wade's attorneys jointly asked the judge in Wade's case to delay his sentencing indefinitely because his cooperation seems likely to "continue for quite some time." They don't even want to discuss a sentencing date when the parties next meet in August.

It sounds like it could take going on two years for Wade to get through all the cooperating he plans to do.

Confidence In GOP Is At New Low in Poll
Democrats Favored To Address Issues

By Richard Morin and Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, May 17, 2006; A01

Public confidence in GOP governance has plunged to the lowest levels of the Bush presidency, with Americans saying by wide margins that they now trust Democrats more than Republicans to deal with Iraq, the economy, immigration and other issues, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll that underscores the GOP's fragile grip on power six months before the midterm elections.

Dissatisfaction with the administration's policies in Iraq has overwhelmed other issues as the source of problems for President Bush and the Republicans. The survey suggests that pessimism about the direction of the country -- 69 percent said the nation is now off track -- and disaffection with Republicans have dramatically improved Democrats' chances to make gains in November.

Democrats are now favored to handle all 10 issues measured in the Post-ABC News poll. The survey shows a majority of the public, 56 percent, saying they would prefer to see Democrats in control of Congress after the elections.

The poll offers two cautions for the Democrats, however. One is a growing disaffection with incumbents generally. When asked whether they were inclined to reelect their current representative to Congress or look around for someone new, 55 percent said they were open to someone else, the highest since just before Republicans captured control of Congress in 1994. That suggests that some Democratic incumbents could feel the voters' wrath, although as the party in power Republicans have more at risk.

The second warning for Democrats is that their improved prospects for November appear driven primarily by dissatisfaction with Republicans rather than by positive impressions of their own party. Congressional Democrats are rating only slightly more favorably than congressional Republicans, and 52 percent of those surveyed said the Democrats have not offered a sharp contrast to Bush and the Republicans.

McCartney and wife: We can't work it out
LONDON (CNN) -- Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney, announced Wednesday that they are separating after four years of marriage.

In a joint statement released through the British Press Association, the couple said: "Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much but have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives, and we have actively tried to protect the privacy of our child," the joint statement said.

The couple have a 2-year-old daughter, Beatrice Milly.

"Separation for any couple is difficult enough, but to have to go through this so publicly, especially with a small daughter, is immensely stressful. "We hope, for the sake of our baby daughter, that we will be given some space and time to get through this difficult period." (Posted 7:59 a.m.)

Rumsfeld Seeks Extra Funds for War Bills By ROBERT BURNS, AP Military Writer
Wed May 17, 4:13 AM ET

With war bills to pay, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is calling on Congress to pass President Bush's request for an extra $65 billion to cover costs in Iraq and Afghanistan this year.

His scheduled appearance Wednesday before the Senate Appropriations defense subcommittee was his first public testimony on Capitol Hill since retired generals issued a series of calls for Rumsfeld to resign earlier this spring. Rumsfeld, with strong public backing by Bush, appears to have weathered that storm.

It also was Rumsfeld's first opportunity to comment on Bush's announcement Monday that he is sending 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S. southern border to support the federal Border Patrol. The administration has not said how much it expects that to cost, nor has it set a hard time limit on the assistance.

Although the Guard troops will be operating under state governors' control, the cost will be paid by the federal government.

Pentagon press secretary Eric Ruff said Tuesday that Rumsfeld planned to tell the appropriations panel that Iraq has entered a "hopeful new phase" following a successful election last December and progress in recent weeks toward assembling a unity government.

"We will be talking about defense spending in terms of how we view the global war on terror and why there is reason for optimism in Iraq," Ruff said.

I would like to see things better in Iraq, but I don't see it!! Good money after bad!

Markets dive on inflation fears
Major stock gauges sink into the red as consumer prices raise worries about inflation and rising interest rates.
May 17, 2006: 10:20 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Stocks tumbled Wednesday, extending losses from the previous session's selloff, after a stronger-than-expected rise in consumer inflation reignited concerns over interest rates.

The Dow Jones industrial average (down 75.40 to 11,344.49, Charts) lost 1.2 percent an hour into the session.

The broader Standard & Poor's 500 (down 6.44 to 1,285.64, Charts) index and the Nasdaq composite (down 12.06 to 2,217.07, Charts) were both down about 0.8 percent.

Stocks ended lower Tuesday, as disappointing sales from retailers overshadowed earlier gains following the core Producer Price Index, which measures inflation at the wholesale level, came in below expectations.

The Labor Department said its Consumer Price Index, its key inflation measure, rose by 0.6 percent in April.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com forecast a 0.5 percent on higher energy prices, following a 0.4 percent rise in March.

The so called core CPI, which excludes energy and food prices, rose by 0.3 percent. Economists were looking for a 0.2 percent gain.

-headed monster stalks markets
Some investors worry about a slowdown, others point to inflation. Which group is right?
By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer
May 15, 2006: 5:09 PM EDT
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Economists agree there are worrying signs about the nation's economy. What they don't agree on is what should be the major worry.

Some economists are pointing to signs of inflation ahead of this week's Producer Price Index and Consumer Price Index reports.

They point to factors such as wage growth outpacing prices in the most recent employment report, and a weakening dollar as an underlying inflationary pressure beyond the impact of high energy prices. And they say those factors are raising concerns that the Federal Reserve will continue to raise rates at its June meeting and perhaps beyond.

"I think the markets are finally realizing that inflation is in them thar hills and the Fed will have to continue to tap on the brakes," said Rich Yamarone, director of economic research at Argus Research.

He's looking for a 0.7 percent rise in the CPI in April, and a 0.3 percent increase in the so-called core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices. Both estimates are above the consensus increase of 0.5 percent for CPI and 0.2 percent for the core, according to surveys of economists by Briefing.com.

Yamarone said that a dollar weakening compared to the yen and the euro, as well as the Chinese yuan, can only add to inflationary pressure in the United States.

"We haven't seen that yet, but we should be expecting to be importing higher inflation," he said.

Iran President Rejects EU Calls to Suspend Enrichment

May 17 (Bloomberg) -- Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad rejected European Union calls to suspend uranium enrichment, saying its previous halt in 2003 was ``a bitter experience.''

The European Union may offer Iran a nuclear reactor in an incentive package to persuade the country to cease uranium enrichment, officials close to the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency said yesterday. The offer hinges on Iran suspending its uranium research and development program.

``The people of Iran will accept no suspension and no stopping'' of the country's nuclear activities, Ahamdinejad said in a speech to supporters in Markazi Province carried live on state television. ``We accepted suspension once with confidence in you, and unfortunately this was a bitter experience. We will not be bitten twice,'' said the Iranian leader, extending his right hand to the crowd.

The United Nations Security Council's five permanent members -- the U.S., U.K., France, Russia and China -- plus Germany were due to meet in London on May 19 to find ways to break the deadlock. The meeting has been postponed to allow more time for Europe to fine-tune its proposal to Tehran, the U.K. Foreign Office said today.

Russia and China have so far resisted using the threat of sanctions against Iran, while the EU -- backed by the U.S. -- is pushing for them should diplomacy fail.

`Nuclear Club'

Iran joined the ``nuclear club'' on April 9 by enriching uranium to a purity of 3.5 percent, enough to power a nuclear power plant, Ahmadinejad said last month. Iran, now in the process of accelerating uranium enrichment to reach ``industrial- scale'' output, ignored an April 28 non-binding deadline by the UN Security Council to suspend the program.

Iran claims it has the ``right'' to enrich uranium on its soil, basing its claim on Article 4 of the Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapon

Venezuela considers selling its F-16 fighter jets to Iran

May 17, 2006. 01:00 AM

FABIOLA SANCHEZ
ASSOCIATED PRESS

CARACAS—Venezuela's military is considering selling its fleet of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to another country, possibly Iran, in response to a U.S. ban on arms sales to President Hugo Chavez's government, an official said yesterday.

Gen. Alberto Muller, a senior adviser to Chavez, said he had recommended to the defence minister that Venezuela consider selling the 21 jets to another country.

Muller said he thought it was worthwhile to consider "the feasibility of a negotiation with Iran for the sale of those planes.''

Even before the United States announced the ban on arms sales Monday, Washington had stopped selling Venezuela sensitive upgrades for the F-16s, bought in 1983.

Muller said officials have been considering options for replacing the F-16s for some time. He said the military was considering Russian Su-35 jet fighters, "which is the best jet fighter there is in the world right now.''

Chavez has previously warned he could share the U.S.-made F-16s with Cuba and China — and look into buying new jets from Russia or China — because he said Washington was not supplying parts for the planes as agreed.

New Executive Order Permits Intelligence Director To Authorize Telcos To Lie Without Violating Securities Law
In recent days, AT&T, Bell South and Verizon have all issued statements denying that they’ve handed over phone records to the NSA, as reported by USA today.

There are three possibilities:

1) The USA Today story is inaccurate,

2) The telcos left enough wiggle room in the statements that both the USA Today story and their statements are accurate; or

3) The statements from the telcos are inaccurate.

Ordinarily, a company that conceals their transactions and activities from the public would violate securities law. But an executive order signed by the President on May 5 allows the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, to authorize a company to conceal activities related to national security. (See 15 U.S.C. 78m(b)(3)(A))

There is no evidence that this executive order has been used by John Negroponte with respect to the telcos. Of course, if it was used, we wouldn’t know about it.

Europeans Ready To Give Iran a Nuclear Reactor

By BENNY AVNI - Staff Reporter of the Sun
May 17, 2006

UNITED NATIONS - In a last-ditch effort to offer an incentive package for Iran in return for suspension of its uranium enrichment program, European negotiators are ready to provide the mullahs with a light water nuclear reactor. To date, Tehran steadfastly has refused any offer that would infringe on what it sees as its "right" to carry out its own enrichment.

The European offer, floated by Vienna-based diplomats yesterday, has yet to receive support from Washington, which wants any set of incentives offered to Iran to be accompanied by a threat of punitive measures in case of non-cooperation. Meanwhile, Russia and China are unconvinced that economic sanctions or military action are needed to enforce compliance with the Security Council.

Despite the anti-lobbyist rhetoric coming from Capitol Hill, lawmakers continue to ask lobbyists for money. “The Speaker [Dennis Hastert (R-IL)]…said we need to minimize our contact with lobbyists, implying something is not right,” said one lobbyist. But just this week, he received a fundraiser invitation from Hastert where the “suggested minimum contribution” was $2,500. “How dare he ask us for money.”

The Iran Threat: Clear and Present Danger

By AMNON RUBINSTEIN

May 17, 2006

Beyond the rhetoric's relating to the Iranian menace lies a clear and present danger to the very existence of Israel.

The rhetoric is that Iran, by defying the international community, threatens world peace and that its insistence on manufacturing nuclear bombs as well as long-distance missiles destabilizes the Middle East. The facts are that only one country is the immediate target for a nuclear holocaust: Israel: The rhetoric is that international pressure and the threat of sanctions may deter Iran from proceeding in its destructive plans.

Iran's F-16 Maintenance Nightmare

May 17, 2006: The threat by Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez selling 21 of Venezuela's F-16 fighters to Iran, has gained press attention. However, this is a threat that is largely empty in terms of potential harm to the United States.

The F-16s in question were acquired in 1983 and 1984, and are technically the F-16A/B Block 15 (F-16s currently in service with the US Air Force are F-16C/D Block 50s, with the F-16E/F Block 60 being built for the UAE). The planes in question are twenty years old – and for the F-16, that is very old indeed. These aircraft are not equipped with the latest radars, air-to-air missiles, or jammers. And, in the eight years since Chavez took power, they have not been getting much in the way of logistics thanks to the freeze in relations (upsetting the country which makes the spare parts for your combat aircraft is not a good idea).

That said, Chavez's threat to sell them to Iran is meant to generate headlines, and to symbolically hurt the United States. But this move, while it would violate various export agreements, really will not hurt the United States militarily, even if Iran were to get all 21 of these F-16s. The planes would be going from a country with very limited logistical support ability for the F-16 (Venezuela) to one with practically no ability to support F-16A operations at all.

For instance, none of Iran's planes currently in service use the Pratt and Whitney F100 engine that the Venezuelan planes use. Nor does Iran have any aircraft that use the APG-66 radar on the F-16A. Iran could use rear-aspect Sidewinders from its F-5 force, along with 20mm cannon ammo from its force of F-4s, but when something on the airplane breaks, Iran will have to cannibalize, and that means that 21 F-16s will quickly drop to a much lower figure – as past experience with Iran's force of F-5s, F-4s, and F-14s has shown. Venezuela could send over what spare parts and missiles (including older all-aspect AIM-9L S

Howard: If ‘Code’ will upset you, don't see it Director says film meant ‘to be entertainment, it’s not theology’

CANNES, France - Director Ron Howard had a suggestion Wednesday for people riled by the way Christian history is depicted in “The Da Vinci Code”: If you suspect the movie will upset you, don’t go see it.

Howard’s adaptation of Dan Brown’s blockbuster was to open the Cannes Film Festival later Wednesday at a glitzy black-tie premiere. Beforehand, he answered questions about “Da Vinci” protests around the world — and also in Cannes, where a Roman Catholic nun wearing a brown habit kneeled in prayer at the base of the red carpet.

“There’s no question that the film is likely to be upsetting to some people,” Howard told reporters. “My advice, since virtually no one has really seen the movie yet, is to not go see the movie if you think you’re going to be upset. Wait. Talk to somebody who has seen it. Discuss it. And then arrive at an opinion about the movie itself.”

“Again: This is supposed to be entertainment, it’s not theology,” he said.

The book, and the screen adaptation, suggest that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalene and fathered a child. One reporter asked the cast if they believed Christ was married.

Star Tom Hanks quipped, “Well, I wasn’t around.”

Christian groups as far away as South Korea, Thailand and India have protested the movie, planning boycotts, a hunger strike and attempts to block or shorten screenings.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy urged the international community on Wednesday to present a united front in confronting Iranian efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

During a visit to Israel, Douste-Blazy said Iran's nuclear program caused a "serious crisis" and the U.N. Security Council may have to impose sanctions on Iran if it does not halt the enrichment of uranium.

"We are currently operating with two key words: unity and determination of the international community," Douste-Blazy said at a hospital in southern Israel. "Nothing is worse that not having the international community united on this subject."

Clinton or McCain: who would nuke Iran?

The best estimates that I have seen are that it will take Iran 5-10 years to develop a usable nuclear bomb. So it will not be George W Bush who has to handle the situation, it will probably be his successor, and maybe the president after that. What if that president is Hillary Clinton? What if it is John McCain.
May 10th, 2006: 09:52:16

McCain is a clear defence hawk. He would demand from the joint chiefs viable options. This far in advance, it is difficult to know for certain which option would look best. But Hillary Clinton - at least if her husband's presidency is anything to go by - is easier to call.
Bill Clinton did not ignore problems abroad, but he had a visceral objection to deploying American troops. He tried to solve every problem from the air. Bombs and missiles were his only resort.

If a future President Hillary Clinton were to take the same attitude, the list of viable options to confront a near nuclear Iran would be very limited. Without even special forces on the ground to identify targets only the most devastating missile attack could possibly eliminate a substantial nuclear programme spread over dozens of sites. An attack on this scale would need to involve American nuclear power to be sure of success.

She would face a choice between a nuclear attack and no action at all. She would be sure to take the first option.

The president finally acknowledged the unsustainable social and economic burdens of permitting millions of illegal aliens to forge documents, pressure our public schools and hospitals, and overtax our local and state budgets.

And the president, in asking for more border patrol officers and sending 6,000 National Guardsmen to our southern border to support the Border Patrol, also acknowledged the federal government's utter failure to protect the American people by securing our borders, across which as many as three million illegal aliens enter this country each year.

The Nasdaq is building on six day's of downturns and is now matching the Dow's 1.5% decline as tech is now weak across the board. Even the S&P 400 MidCap Index, which has outrperformed both the large and small cap indices for several years, is off 1.6%, leaving very few areas of buying interest anywhere.DJ30 -173.38 NASDAQ -32.42 SP500

Bush poll hits new low

Washington, May 17 - The number of Americans who approve of the job President George W. Bush is doing continues to fall, said a new poll on Tuesday, blaming the Iraq war.

Bush holds a 33 percent approval rating, the lowest of any American president in 25 years ABC news and the Washington Post have been publishing such polls.

Some 65 percent of those polled disapprove of Bush's performance, the highest level in those 25 years, the two news organizations said. The reason is the US war in Iraq, ABC said.

According to the poll, 62 percent of Americans said that the war was not worth the sacrifices made and 59 percent said the war was a mistake.

More broadly, those polled said America was on the wrong track. Americans' disappointment with their federal government did not apply to their local governments, as polls showed 45 percent said the states where they live are headed in the right direction and 58 percent said their communities are on the right track.

Eight in 10 are happy with their own lives and futures. Bush's rating matches that of his father, George Bush, in August 1992, just before losing a re-election bid.

His disapproval is one point less than that of Richard Nixon before he resigned.

Nixon's was the highest disapproval rating since 1938. The President's approval rating may affect mid-term legislative elections slated for November.

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Gunmen attacked a parking lot in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad on Tuesday, shooting the guards and detonating a car bomb near an oil tanker. At least 19 people were killed and dozens wounded.

The attack unfolded in the northern commercial district of Shaab, where police Capt. Ali al-Obeidi said the gunmen first shot five guards at the open-air lot that served as a parking area and small market.

As bystanders rushed to the scene to rescue the victims, a car bomb blew up next to an oil tanker, which exploded in a fireball. AP Television News footage showed the remnants of an exploded car and sandals and clothes of the dead and injured.

The attack seemed to be aimed at killing as many people as possible. The motive was unclear, but it may have been sectarian.

Police also said a United Arab Emirates diplomat was kidnapped in Baghdad late Tuesday. The diplomat was not identified. At least six other Arab embassy workers have been kidnapped since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, some by al-Qaida in Iraq to undercut support for the U.S.-backed government among Arab countries.

Escalating violence across the country left at least 36 people dead Tuesday as Iraq's prime minister-designate announced he was close to forming a new government before a May 22 deadline — though other groups claimed there's a long way to go.

Any final agreement appeared to hinge on whether the largest Shiite bloc in parliament could strike a deal with the largest Sunni Arab bloc over the interior and defense ministries.

Basra carnage escalates as one person killed every hour
By: Patrick Cockburn

One person is being assassinated in Basra every hour, as order in Iraq's second city disintegrates, according to an Iraqi Defence Ministry official.

And a quarter of all Iraqi children suffer from malnutrition, a survey of 20,000 households by the Iraqi government and Unicef says.

The number of violent killings in Basra is now at a level close to that of Baghdad, and marks the failure of the British Army's three-year attempt to quell violence there. Police no longer dare go to the site of a murder because they fear being attacked. The governor of Basra, Mohammed Misbahal-Wa'ili, is trying to sack the city's police chief, claiming that the police have not carried out a single investigation into hundreds of recent assassinations.

The collapse of government authority in Iraq is increasing at every level and leaders in Baghdad have yet to form a cabinet, five months after parliamentary elections on 15 December.

Insurgent attacks on American and British troops are also proving more lethal, with 44 US soldiers and seven British killed so far this month, and with daily losses exceeding anything seen for more than a year.

Majid al-Sari, an adviser to the Iraqi Ministry of Defence, describing the situation in Basra to the daily al-Zaman, said that on average one person was being assassinated every hour. Militiamen and tribesmen are often the only real authority. When Sheikh Hassan Jarih al-Karamishi was killed by men dressed in police uniforms at the weekend, Mr Sari said his heavily armed armed tribesmen stormed one police station in south Basra, killing 11 police, and burnt down two other buildings, headquarters for a political party.

Tribes who once lived in the marshlands outside Basra are engaged in constant feuds with other tribes. While militias owe allegiance to Shia parties, they are also suspected of receiving funds from Kuwaiti and Iranian intelligence.
The number of Iraqis killed as a result of violence receives some international attention, but many others, particularly young children, die because they are malnourished and vulnerable to disease. A quarter of all

Rove to Rescue Phone Jamming GOPers
By Paul Kiel - May 17, 2006, 10:54 AM
I love it when scandals converge.

As reported in today's Washington Post, the New Hampshire Republican State Committee has been so financially drained by legal bills piling up from defending its phone jamming that they have only a total of $733.60 in their state and federal accounts. What to do?

Call Karl Rove. On June 12th, Rove will be the "special guest" at the NHRSC's annual dinner. For those in the area, it'll cost you $100 a head to get into the Radisson to hear the possibly-then-indicted-Rove. But if you want to get an especially good look, you'll have to pay $250.

Proceeds will go to a worthy cause: Devine Millimet & Branch, the law firm defending the NHRSC against the Democrats' ongoing lawsuit. The bill is $85,535 and climbing.

Democrats Announce Sweeping New Energy Legislation; The Clean EDGE Act Will Help Make America Energy Independent by 2020

WASHINGTON, May 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- For five years, Bush Republicans in Washington have let energy companies write America's energy policies. Now, oil men in the White House have given the American people sky-high gas prices and a nation addicted to oil. It is time for a real change, and Senate Democrats today unveiled sweeping new legislation to take charge of America's energy future. The plan, the Clean EDGE Act of 2006, is a comprehensive bill that will put America on the road to energy independence by 2020. The Senators also released a letter to President Bush signed by 43 Senate Democrats calling on the president to join Democrats in support of the five main principles of the Clean EDGE Act to break America's dependence on foreign oil.........

Big CPI rise stokes inflation worry By Tim Ahmann
Wed May 17, 9:08 AM ET

A big jump in energy costs pushed U.S. consumer prices up sharply last month, while rising rents led to an unexpectedly steep gain in core prices, according to a government report on Wednesday that stirred inflation worries in financial markets.

The Labor Department said the consumer price index rose 0.6 percent in April, while the core index, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3 percent for a second consecutive month.

Wall Street economists had expected consumer prices to rise 0.5 percent last month, with core prices up just 0.2 percent.

Prices for U.S. government bonds and stock futures fell, while the dollar temporarily pared earlier losses as traders saw the report as boosting odds of further interest-rate hikes from the U.S. central bank.

"Clearly this is going to tilt the Federal Reserve a little bit more in favor of a hawkish position," said Les Satlow, a portfolio manager at Cabot Money Management in Salem, Massachusetts.

The Labor Department said half of the increase in the core inflation index was due to a 0.3 percent gain in shelter costs, with increases in the cost of apparel, medical care, and education and communication also contributing.

The rise in shelter costs reflected the second straight monthly 0.4 percent increase in the department's rents-based measure of owner-occupied housing costs. Economists say the rental market appears to be tightening as Americans give up trying to buy.

Culture of Corruption: Payment to Lewis staffer studied ... linked to Cunningham - Lewis - Lowery Scandal

San Bernadino Sun

Congressional watchdogs blasted a $600,000 severance payment that a lobbying firm with ties to Rep. Jerry Lewis paid to one of its partners days before he assumed a top slot with Lewis on the House Appropriations Committee.

Redlands native Jeff Shockey lobbied Congress on behalf of dozens of San Bernardino County and Riverside County agencies in his six years with Copeland Lowery Jacquez Denton & White. Shockey quickly rose to partner, and before leaving in 2005 to become Lewis' deputy staff director, he earned $1.5 million, making him one of Washington's top-paid lobbyists.

Considering Shockey's salary and stake in the firm, several political ethicists said they do not consider a $600,000 severance payment excessive. At the same time, such a rich going-away present from a firm with vested interests in Congress to an aide who would have his hands on congressional purse strings troubled many watchdogs.

"Here is this aide who clearly influences what happens on the committee," said Michael Surrusco, director of Common Cause's ethics campaign. "Immediately before taking the job he's being paid by a select group of clients, and that stinks," he said. "The system shouldn't allow that to happen."

According to published reports, federal prosecutors are examining links between Lewis, the chairman of the appropriations panel, and the lobbying firm's founder, former San Diego Rep. William Lowery, in connection with the bribery investigation of convicted Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham.

~40,000 total Dem. votes for all (D) primary candidates

= 46%(R) / 54%(D) 74,000 turnout

and this is a district that in 2004 voted:

57%(R) / 43%(D) 285,000 turnout

i'm sure the actual election will be different, but it still is a good sign....

Power-hungry Pentagon needs to be reined in

Some influential Republicans are upset at the nomination of Gen. Michael Hayden to head the Central Intelligence Agency, preferring a civilian to maintain the CIA's independence from the powerful Pentagon. Just a change of clothing isn't enough to distance Hayden from his fellow generals.

When Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, backing Hayden, asserts, "There's no power play taking place in Washington," lock up the silverware, for the Big Con Game is afoot. Rummy is surpassed only by his buddy, Vice President Dick Cheney, in playing the capital's inside-power game — just ask Colin Powell.

Public fears brought on by 9/11 have given the American military unchallenged access to taxpayer funds and increased responsibilities and prestige that can only be compared to World War II. Along with the super-secret National Security Agency, which Hayden headed while it collected personal data on millions of Americans without a court warrant, Pentagon intelligence is shrouded in secrecy.

Its increased power has come largely at the expense of the State Department and the CIA. The Pentagon already controls some 80 percent of intelligence funding, and has greatly expanded the scope of its intelligence operations under Rumsfeld.

Minutemen Dismiss Bush's Border Plan

- - - - - - - - - - - -

May 16,2006 | TUCSON, Ariz. -- A civilian border-patrol group said it still plans to erect a short security fence along the Mexican border, despite President Bush's pledge to deploy thousands of National Guard troops there.

A spokeswoman for the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps said Tuesday what Bush promised was not enough.

"It's adding more people to the mix who will not be in position to do actual patrols," Connie Hair said.

Chris Simcox, the group's leader, said last month the group would build a fence on private land unless the White House deployed U.S. troops to the border and endorsed more secure fencing.

On Monday, Bush proposed sending as many as 6,000 Guard troops to strengthen enforcement at the border. The guardsmen would fill in on some behind-the-lines Border Patrol jobs while that agency's force is expanded.

But Hair said the plan remains to build 50 to 150 feet of a double fence on a privately owned ranch over Memorial Day weekend. Nearly 1,000 Minutemen volunteers had signed up on the group's Web site, but probably 300 to 350 will be used to work on the fencing, Hair said.

Bush Entertains Air-Ono - Leader of Australia

- - - - - - - - - - - -

By DEB RIECHMANN Associated Press Writer

May 16,2006 | WASHINGTON -- In toasting Australia's prime minister at a White House dinner Tuesday night, President Bush quoted former President Reagan, who used to say it was "morning in America."

"That's still true for our country," Bush said, cheerfully. "We're really an optimistic people, and we firmly believe the best days are ahead for our country."

Then, Bush joked: "It's also comforting to know that on the other side of the world, it's already morning in Australia."

In a five-minute exchange of toasts, Bush said that the United States and Australia work together to expand trade, counter threats of nuclear proliferation and develop energy technologies.

"In the global war on terror we have no better ally than Australia and Air-Ono," Bush said.

Air-Ono said the world will need the United States in the future as much as it does today.

"Those foolish enough to suggest that America should have a lesser role in the affairs of the world should pause and think whether they really mean what they say, because a world without a dedicated, involved America will be a lesser world, a less safe world, a more precarious world," Air-Ono said.

good morning, everyone.

Take Action Now

It's time for us to tell Congress in a clear, loud voice that we've had enough!

Today, Wednesday, May 17th, people from around the country will participate in the Congressional Call-In Day initiated by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee, the ACLU, People For the American Way, and other organizations (see below). We will demand a Congressional investigation of this government intrusion immediately. If you can't make the calls today, then any day this week would be great. Let's keep those phones ringing in the Congressional halls all week long!

The Message

Please phone each of your Senators, and your Representative. Urge them NOT to consider draft legislation that would give the executive branch new surveillance powers that are immune to oversight by the courts and Congress. Call for a full, public investigation of the NSA surveillance program.

Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 (24 hours) and ask the operator to connect you. Or use the Bill of Rights Defense Committee call-in page to find your legislators' phone numbers.

Cyprus ‘Utopian’ candidate promises free love -- ‘My new order will give people ... lots of love for all,’ fringe politician says

LARNACA, Cyprus - Costas Kyriakou is promising Cypriot voters Utopia and that means sex.

A colorful candidate among a sea of suited businessmen and lawyers, Kyriakou says he is offering voters an alternative in the island’s May 21 parliamentary elections.

“My new order will give people ... lots of love for all,” he says.

His nickname, “Utopos”, combines two Greek words which coined the term “Utopia”, meaning “No Place.”

A strapping man with piercing blue eyes, he draws on ideas from Plato and Christian apocalyptic scriptures for his ideal city-state where people live in communes and share everything.

But central to his Utopia is sex, a campaign pledge which draws guffaws of disbelief from deeply conservative Cypriots.

“I propose a regime of free love,” he declares.

“The men will see it as a system of free love, the women as a matriarchy ... they will be able to carry the sperm of the most handsome men, and give the child her name.”

The running candidate
Utopos, an independent candidate for the western region of Paphos, has hit the campaign trail running. Literally.

Sporting a black bandana, jeans and sandals, he has crossed most Cypriot towns on foot, chatting with locals and handing out his pamphlets.

Utopos, 48, quit philosophy school in his third year and is now a farmer. “I knew more than they did. I was against others trying to stuff my head with ideas.”

It is his second run for parliament, which he sees as a stepping stone to the presidency.

He ran in the presidential election of 2003, where he won 0.44 percent of the vote, the highest figure among a smattering of fringe non-party candidates.

Utopos disputes this. “I received 73 percent,” he said.

FDA gets failing grade on protecting patient safety
Congress needs to act now!

The government’s own investigative arm has found that the FDA has no clear policy for dealing with drug safety problems, and doesn’t even have any real power to require drug makers to conduct safety studies when needed.

In fact, investigators found when a drug safety problem comes to light, the FDA lacks a system for deciding what actions to take and when.

So serious is the problem that the Government Accountability Office is recommending that Congress expand the FDA’s authority over drug companies. Yet bills that would give the agency that power, as well as require drug studies be made public, languish on Capitol Hill.

Tell Congress you want to know why they aren’t making drug safety a priority. Two bi-partisan bills that would require drug companies to release studies showing dangerous side effects, conduct further safety studies when problems arise, and allow quicker FDA safety warning labeling haven’t even had a hearing.

Act now! Ask Congress to hold hearings and vote on these bills, so we can have faith that the FDA is putting patient safety first.

Homeless Foot-Licker Charged in Calif.

- - - - - - - - - - - -

May 16,2006 | SANTA ANA, Calif. -- A homeless Orange County man who allegedly licked the feet of five boys after promising to cast them in a television commercial has been charged with lewd conduct, officials said Tuesday.

Steven Michael Jones, 43, will be arraigned in Newport Beach Friday, said Sheriff's Department Spokesman Jim Amormino.

Jones, of San Clemente, was charged with five felony counts of lewd acts with a child and one misdemeanor of child annoyance, Amormino said. All the victims were under 14.

If convicted on all counts, Jones faces 16 years in prison.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Jones April 14 near the shore in San Clemente. Witnesses told authorities Jones was wearing a suit the day before when he approached three boys sitting on a bench, Amormino said.

"It's unusual for someone to wear a suit to the beach," Amormino said.

The boys had just come off the beach and were not wearing shoes. Jones allegedly promised them a part in a Johnson & Johnson television commercial, telling them he first needed to inspect their feet, Amormino said.

"He allegedly licked the bottom of one of the boys' feet. The other two boys ran away," Amormino said.

Jones allegedly used a similar ruse March 28 on four boys near Dana Point Library. He said he'd pay them $1,500 to appear in a commercial, but first had to inspect their feet, Amormino said. Jones allegedly licked the feet of all four boys, Amormino said.

Jones was being held on $115,000 bail.

Colorado Professor Cited for Misconduct

- - - - - - - - - - - -

By CHASE SQUIRES Associated Press Writer

May 16,2006 | BOULDER, Colo. -- An investigation of a professor who likened some of the Sept. 11 victims to a Nazi found serious cases of misconduct in his academic research, including plagiarism and fabrications, a University of Colorado spokesman said Tuesday.

One member of the five-person investigative committee recommended that ethnic studies professor Ward Churchill be fired, and four recommended he be suspended, university spokesman Barrie Hartman said.

Churchill, who has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, said the report was contradictory and in some cases false.

"I feel like the process was a pretext" with the eventual goal to fire him, he said.

University officials said they expect to decide Churchill's fate by June 8.

The professor touched off a firestorm with an essay relating the 2001 terrorist attacks to U.S. abuses abroad. The essay referred to some World Trade Center victims as "little Eichmanns," a reference to Adolf Eichmann, who carried out Adolf Hitler's plan to exterminate European Jews during World War II.

University officials had earlier determined Churchill could not be fired for his comments about the terrorist attacks, but they launched an inquiry into allegations about his research.

The committee's 125-page report said Churchill falsified, fabricated and plagiarized some of his research, did not always comply with standards for listing other authors' names and failed to follow accepted practice for reporting results.

Gov. Bill Owens said that Churchill has tarnished the university's reputation and should resign.

Churchill's wife, Natsu Saito, who also teaches in the ethnic studies department, said Tuesday she had resigned her tenured teaching position at the school but said she and Churchill have no plans to leave Boulder.

In her resignation letter, Saito accused the university of reneging on promises to her and the department, ignoring racial harassment of the department and individuals, and treating Churchill unfairly. She said her decision to resign was not prompted by the pe

Dear Jenise,

I am writing you today to express my strong support of one of our greatest Democrats in the House of Representatives, Congressman Leonard Boswell.

Recently, I spent time in Iowa with the congressman. Over the course of the weekend, I learned how special a man Leonard Boswell is. He's a decorated veteran, an intelligence expert, a farmer, a family man and a strong Democratic leader.

I also learned about how hard Republicans in Washington, D.C., are trying to discredit his good name. Leonard remains the only Democrat from Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives. And as you can imagine, Karl Rove and his Republican attack machine are committed to ending Leonard's career this November. The National Republicans have targeted Leonard as their #1 priority this year. They will be coming at him with everything they have.

We must stand up now and do all we can to help Leonard today!

Already, several national Republicans have campaigned against Leonard. Recently the Republicans boasted of having raised $744,000 to fund their vicious attacks on Leonard!

Please take a moment today and send a contribution of whatever you can afford to our campaign to stand up for good Democrats!

NEW YORK - Lew Anderson, who captivated young baby boomers as the Howdy Doody Show’s final Clarabell the Clown, has died at the age of 84.

The musician and actor died Sunday in Hawthorne of complications of prostate cancer, said his son, Christopher Anderson.

Long mute as Clarabell, Anderson broke the clown’s silence in the show’s final episode in 1960. With trembling lips and a visible tear in his eye, he spoke the show’s final words: “Goodbye, kids.”

Though Anderson was not the only man to play “Buffalo Bob” Smith’s mute sidekick, he was the best, Smith said in his memoir.

With the Peanut Gallery looking on, Anderson used bicycle horns to give yes and no answers. For more expressive moments, he wielded a bottle of seltzer.

Though his fame as Clarabell followed him throughout his life, Anderson was also a success as a musician and bandleader. In recent years, his All-American Big Band appeared on Friday nights at New York’s Birdland jazz club.

Anderson was born in 1922 in Kirkman, Iowa. He started a band while serving in the Navy during World War II and later toured the Midwest with bands before landing in New York.

It was when he joined the Honey Dreamers, a singing group that appeared on radio and early television shows, that he met Smith and became a clown

“Clarabell just fell into his lap,” said his stepdaughter, Lorie George.

Anderson followed Bobby Nicholson, who later played Doodyville’s J. Cornelius Cobb, into the role. The first to play the mute clown was Bob Keeshan, who later became known as Captain Kangaroo.

Anderson, who lived in South Salem, is survived by his wife, Peggy, two sons, his stepdaughter and five grandchildren.

Bowing To The Police State

Ray McGovern
May 16, 2006

http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2006/05/16/bowing_to_the_police_state.php

Is Congress aiding and abetting the creation of a police state? Recently, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., helped to give the CIA and NSA unprecedented police powers. By inserting a provision in the FY07 Intelligence Authorization Act, Hoekstra has undermined the existing statutory limits on involvement in domestic law enforcement. This comes after revelations in January of direct NSA involvement with the Baltimore police in order to "protect" the NSA Headquarters from Quaker protesters.

Add to this, the disquieting news that the White House has been barraging the CIA with totally improper questions about the political affiliation of some of its senior intelligence officers, the ever widening use of polygraph examinations, and the FBI’s admission that it acquires phone records of broadcast and print media to investigate leaks at the CIA. I, for one, am reminded of my service in the police state of the U.S.S.R., where there were no First or Fourth Amendments.

Like the proverbial frog in slowly boiling water, we have become inured to what goes on in the name of national security. Recent disclosures about increased government surveillance and illegal activities would be shocking, were it not for the prevailing outrage-fatigue brought on by a long train of abuses. But the heads of the civilian, democratically elected institutions that are supposed to be our bulwark against an encroaching police state, the ones who stand to lose their own power as well as their rights and the rights of all citizens, aren’t interested in reigning in the power of the intelligence establishment. To the contrary, Rep. Hoekstra and his counterpart at the Senate, Pat Roberts, R.-Kan., are running the risk of whiplash as they pivot to look the other way.

James Bamford, one of the best observers of the inner workings of U.S. intelligence, warned recently that Congress has lost control of the

U.S. Secretly Backing Warlords in Somalia

By Emily Wax and Karen DeYoung
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, May 17, 2006; Page A01

More than a decade after U.S. troops withdrew from Somalia following a disastrous military intervention, officials of Somalia's interim government and some U.S. analysts of Africa policy say the United States has returned to the African country, secretly supporting secular warlords who have been waging fierce battles against Islamic groups for control of the capital, Mogadishu.

The latest clashes, last week and over the weekend, were some of the most violent in Mogadishu since the end of the American intervention in 1994, and left 150 dead and hundreds more wounded. Leaders of the interim government blamed U.S. support of the militias for provoking the clashes.

Punishing Free Speech ~ A Travesty of an "Investigation" ~ By WARD CHURCHILL

I have received the report of the Investigative Committee of the University of Colorado and consider it a travesty. This "investigation" has all along been a pretext to punish me for engaging constitutionally-protected speech and, more generally, to discredit the sorts of alternative historical perspective I represent.

There is blatant conflict of interest involved. Interim Chancellor DiStefano, who has consistently and publicly declared his bias against me, has served from the outset as both "complainant" and judge.

Despite my repeated requests for an investigation conducted by unbiased experts, the committee was composed primarily of CU insiders. Although both were available and willing to serve, the investigative panel included neither American Indian scholars nor persons competent in American Indian Studies.

Japan passes fingerprinting law
Japan's parliament has approved a controversial law to fingerprint and photograph foreign visitors in an effort to fight terrorism.
The measures will apply to all foreigners over the age of 16, except permanent residents and those on official business.

Japan's justice minister acknowledged human rights concerns, but said fighting terrorism was more important.

The US introduced similar measures after the 11 September 2001 attacks.

Critics had argued the law violated a constitutional principle to treat people with respect.

Japan is worried it could be a target for terrorism due to its close links with the US and its despatch of troops to Iraq.

Orrin Hatch: Loose Lips On Surveillance

When reporters ask the White House about the NSA program that secretly collects “phone call records of tens of millions of Americans,” administration officials insist that they “cannot confirm or deny the claims in the USA Today story.”

Apparently, someone forgot to send the talking points to Senate Intelligence Committee member Orrin Hatch (R-UT). Here’s how Hatch responded to a question “about recent reports of the government compiling lists of Americans’ phone calls”:

Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, said that at least two of the chief judges on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court had been informed since 2001 of White House-approved National Security Agency monitoring operations.

“None raised any objections, as far as I know,” said Hatch, a member of a special Intelligence Committee panel appointed to oversee the NSA’s work.

By answering the reporter’s question directly, Hatch confirmed the program’s existence. This isn’t the first time Hatch has let classified information slip. From a September 2001 Chicago Tribune report:

A senior senator’s disclosure of highly classified information about the U.S. terrorism investigation has infuriated Bush administration officials and led to a clampdown on how much the White House will share with lawmakers.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters hours after terrorists crashed hijacked jetliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that U.S. intelligence had intercepted a telephone call from a suspect reporting to his handler that the targets in New York City and near Washington had been hit.

Leaking classified information seems to be a conservative strong suit.

Big Oil Launches Attack On Al Gore »
Today, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) will unveil two 60-second TV ads focusing on what it calls “global warming alarmism and the call by some environmental groups and politicians to reduce fossil fuel and carbon dioxide emissions.” The ad, which will be aired in more than a dozen cities across the country, is being released just a week before the May 24th opening (in LA and NYC) of Al Gore’s new movie on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth.

Who is CEI? The Washington Post explains:

The Competitive Enterprise Institute, which widely publicizes its belief that the earth is not warming cataclysmically because of the burning of coal and oil, says Exxon Mobil Corp. is a “major donor” largely as a result of its effort to push that position.

CEI also gets funding from other oil companies through the American Petroleum Institute.

Exxon documents reveal the company gave $270,000 to CEI in 2004 alone. $180,000 of that was earmarked for “global climate change and global climate change outreach.” Exxon has contributed over $1.6 million to CEI since 1998.

CEI’s general counsel Sam Kazman said, “I think what attracted [Exxon] to us was our position on global warming.” CEI’s position? The Institute believes the dangers of global warming are akin “to that of ‘an alien invasion.’” expand post »

Exxon’s spokesperson Tom Cirigliano has explained why the company is so dedicated to funding CEI’s pushback on global warming:

We want to support organizations that are trying to broaden the debate. … There is this whole issue that no one should question the science of global climate change that is ludicrous. That’s the kind of dark-ages thinking that gets you in a lot of trouble.

The science is not questioned because the science behind global warming is indisputable. Science Magazine analyzed 928 peer-reviewed scientific papers on global warming published between 1993 and 2003. Not a single one challenged the scientific consensus that the earth’s temperature is rising due to human activity. The U.S. Climate Change Science Program concluded that humans are driving the warming trend through greenhouse gas emissi

Why would inflation cause the market to drop? Higher prices translate into bigger profits for corporation.

The great stock market crash of 1929 was caused by "deflation." Prices go down, inventories pile up, and unemployment rises.

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at May 17, 2006 2:46 PM

Actually .. CB - The Core CPI index excludes goods with high price volatility, such as food and energy.

The Core CPI rose 0.3% last month .. and it also rose 0.3% in March .. so we are looking at a 0.6% rise in two months . but .. SSShhhhhh!! Mums the word - the Economy is great!

Posted by: Willow at May 17, 2006 3:03 PM

Here's what readers of the Washington Post woke up to on a recent Sunday morning:

Confident Democrats Lay Out Agenda

Democratic leaders, increasingly confident they will seize control of the House in November, are laying plans for a legislative blitz during their first week in power that would raise the minimum wage, roll back parts of the Republican prescription drug law, implement homeland security measures and reinstate lapsed budget deficit controls.

The buzz is finally building in the press about what nearly 70% of Americans know, according to recent polls: enough is enough, and it's time for real change.

Democrats are on the rise, but the November elections are six months away and we can't let this opportunity slip. We need to build steadily until then -- more staff on the ground, more outreach to ordinary Americans, and more resources to get out the vote.

With your help we can raise $250,000 this week that will be focused on one goal: winning in 2006. Can you make a donation of $50 or even $25 to make it happen?

Did you see this BUSH photo at NYTIMES.COM??
by westegg
Wed May 17, 2006 at 12:36:17 PM PDT
You know how the Bush marketing team likes to put up little banners whenever Bush gives a speech or signs a bill. You know, like "Cleaning up the Environment" and "Mission Accomplished" and "Making Lots and Lots of New Jobs" and "Protecting Our Cities from Catastrophe". All that good stuff they've been doing. This is the CEO presidency, remember, and that's how big business does things. If Bush gets another term he'd probably rename his home the "Verizon Wireless White House".

--Anyway, I digress --

westegg's diary :: ::
So today, he signed the tax cut extension; the one that makes sure that W and all of his loved ones will never have to pay their fair share of the trillion dollar Iraq war bill, or the multi-trillion dollar Bush Father and Son Deficit.

Well apparently somebody in the sign-making department made a big boo boo, or maybe they thought that falling poll numbers mean a little honesty is in order, so instead of the usual crap they put on the banner, like "Cutting Taxes for All Americans" which is of course a crock, they put the real message on it. Have a look: LINK

Whistleblower Victory: Judge rules AT&T docs to be aired in court
by Valtin
Wed May 17, 2006 at 10:01:36 AM PDT
The lawsuit by Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) against AT&T alleging that the latter has illegally provided access to its voice and data network, in addition to its databases of customers' calls and e-mails, has been reported on here at Daily Kos. We know from diaries by Siberian, front page stories by mcjoan, and stories in the New York Times, that the government and AT&T have been trying to suppress public airing of testimony and documents related to their collaboration together.

In a story in today's San Francisco Chronicle, we are informed of a well-needed victory in the fight against wireless, warrantless wiretapping, otherwise known as the War against the Constitution.

AT&T was turned down by a federal judge Tuesday in its 11th-hour attempt to bar the public from a San Francisco court hearing today about documents that allegedly show the company's involvement in a secret government electronic surveillance program.

Presidential Memorandum Permits Verizon, Et Al to Lie About Phone Records
by Unabogie
Wed May 17, 2006 at 09:57:24 AM PDT
Think progress has a bit up about an new executive order from Bush.

http://thinkprogress.org/...

By virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, including section 301 of title 3, United States Code, I hereby assign to you the function of the President under section 13(b)(3)(A) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended (15 U.S.C. 78m(b)(3)(A)). In performing such function, you should consult the heads of departments and agencies, as appropriate.

And what is this regarding? Who is the department head? Negroponte. And so what is Bush giving this authority in regards to?

(A)With respect to matters concerning the national security of the United States, no duty or liability under paragraph (2) of this subsection shall be imposed upon any person acting in cooperation with the head of any Federal department or agency responsible for such matters if such act in cooperation with such head of a department or agency was done upon the specific, written directive of the head of such department or agency pursuant to Presidential authority to issue such directives. Each directive issued under this paragraph shall set forth the specific facts and circumstances with respect to which the provisions of this paragraph are to be invoked. Each such directive shall, unless renewed in writing, expire one year after the date of issuance.

Boom. Negroponte was given the power to excuse the Telcoms from lying about this very act, so long as he gives them the order. So the Telcoms can lie about this (notice it took them a few days) and you, as a shareholder, can't do a damn thing about it. They are immune from lawsuits, and exempt from prosecution.

Senate votes to fence & barrier us in from Mexico (83-16)
by Viktor
Wed May 17, 2006 at 12:22:07 PM PDT
Breaking news:

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday, and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.

Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.

The Associated Press

Viktor's diary :: ::
I haven't been able to find the vote count for the amendment yet, but it will turn up here eventually.

The Tancredos ought to be pleased. I know I'm not. But this is a part of the bargain of compromise the Senate is heading towards after approving Kerry's amendment yesterday, among other things.

There isn't a whole lot to be said, that we haven't fought for or against at one point in time or another. I'm against illegal immigration, and am for law enforcement that doesn't involve concepts like walls or fences to be tunneled under.

So I'll update with the roll call once it becomes available. Roll Call

You are assuming that the border is entirely a flat and hospitable area.

"The region along the boundary is characterized by deserts, rugged mountains, abundant sunshine and by two major rivers — the Colorado River and the Rio Grande (Río Bravo del Norte) — which provide life-giving waters to the largely arid but fertile lands along the rivers in both countries."

Protesters Arrested at Halliburton Meeting By SHAUN SCHAFER, Associated Press Writer
41 minutes ago

Sixteen people protesting Halliburton Co.'s environmental record and its role as a military contractor were arrested Wednesday when they surged toward a building where company shareholders were meeting.

One man was accused of vandalism for tearing up a plastic fence holding back protesters, and the rest were accused of trespassing.

A masked man beat on a large empty jug and protesters chanted, "The whole world is watching," and "Shame on you," while police made the arrests. A designated area had been set up for the protest, and police had told protesters not to leave that area.

Those arrested were frisked, handcuffed and taken to the Stephens County Jail.

The Houston-based company said it decided to meet in the southern Oklahoma city where it was founded to highlight company operations that remain here.

Critics accused it of seeking a friendly and remote location in an attempt to duck protests. The company is the leading employer in Duncan, which is about 80 miles south of Oklahoma City.

One of those arrested was wearing a Dick Cheney mask. The vice president formerly headed Halliburton, which has drawn criticism for its big government contracts, some awarded without competitive bidding. Its KBR unit provides support services for troops stationed in the Middle East.

How did I miss this?

In a special February 9th ceremony at the National Guard Building in Washington DC, Park’s bronze statue memorializing Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard was presented to the Commander in Chief. However, the president made no comment about the bust at all, other than to say that the artist "caught me before my hair went gray." I wouldn’t expect Mr. Bush to have anything intelligent to say about the piece of art - which portrays him in a flight suite - but the president also seemed reticent to discuss the military service he was being lauded for. Quoting the Washington Post, "Bush’s service may still be a bit of a sore subject for him, though. He seemed no more eager to talk about it yesterday then he did in his 2004 reelection campaign, when critics questioned whether he manipulated his guard service to avoid having to serve in Vietnam."

The truly fascinating thing about this story concerns the pedestal the president’s portrait bust sits on. Since Bush’s presidency ends in 2009, the inscription on the base should read "2001 - 2009." Interestingly enough however, the engraved date actually reads, "2001 - ." Apparently the ending year of the administration was left off the artwork’s base by those who commissioned the bust - since no one knows the exact date when the free falling president will be impeached and convicted.

US defence budget will equal ROW combined "within 12 months"

By Guy Anderson Editor of Jane's Defence Industry

Defence expenditure in the US will equal that of the rest of the world combined within 12 months, making it "increasingly pressing" for European contractors to develop a "closer association" with the US, corporate finance group PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) says.

Its report - 'The Defence Industry in the 21st Century' by PwC's global aerospace and defence leader Richard Hooke - adds that "the US is in the driving seat", raising the prospect of a future scenario in which it could "dominate the supply of the world's arms completely".

The US defence budget reached US$417.4 billion in 2003 - 46 per cent of the global total...

Okay- 6,000 unarmed national guard troops, without the legal authority to arrest or detain, stationed across our 2000-mile southern border would roughly equate to one confused dude every 600 yards. Now, no matter where you stand on the immigration debate, you have to scratch your head at this one, unless you recognize it as the wimpy political gesture that it is (roughly equivalent to the wilted-lettuce slap that victorian gentlemen bestowed upon each other, before rapiers at dawn.)

"Five days after their separation surgery, Abbigail and Isabelle Carlsen are back in the same bed again at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

And it seems to be helping with their recovery, their father says.

"Everybody thought they've been together so long, there is going to be a time when they're wondering, 'Where's my sister?'" said Jesse Carlsen, 29, of Fargo, N.D. Now "they're in a full-sized bed, laying side by side."

The 5-month-old girls had been joined at the abdomen and chest until Friday, when surgeons separated them. They slept in separate beds for the next five nights, but on Wednesday their parents and doctors agreed to put them together again. ..."

Yes, you are illustrating my POINT.

You guys are criticizing the government because you think that a 400-mile wall and a somewhat larger patrol force is insufficient. You think that it's insufficient because the border is almost 2,000 miles long. My point is that it has rivers, deserts, mountains, etc. Many of those miles are INHOSPITABLE to people. THEY DIE... THEY DIE... They don't want to construct a wall ina desert because, well.. it's "PORK BARREL SPENDING."

Posted by: Michael the self-actualized A-C at May 17, 2006 04:50 PM

No .. you misunderstand me, Michael. I think the wall and the patrols are pointless. The fact that the wall will only be 370 of 1951 miles is funny, albeit at the expense of all of us who pay taxes.

To me it points out that these twits are making a token show to be able to say they are doing something about illegal immigration. Whereas - though I do not agree with it in any way, shape or form - if they were really serious .. they would make an effort to wall the whole thing. They aren't serious .. therefore .. tiny token effort.

it really PISSES ME OFF that the Democratic party DIDN'T EVEN enter a candidate to run for Senate in Indiana against Richard Lugar.

the filing deadline for major parties was Feb.17 and the primary was May 2...

so now, the only candidates on the ballot are:

Richard Lugar (R)

Steve Osborn (Libertarian)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and what gets me is the other senator from Indiana is Evah Bayh (D).....
does anyone know anything about this, or why?????
Props to Toni for posting this on Free range Feminist this morning .. here is the full story from WaPo ...
Forever Pregnant
"New federal guidelines ask all females capable of conceiving a baby to treat themselves -- and to be treated by the health care system -- as pre-pregnant, regardless of whether they plan to get pregnant anytime soon.
Among other things, this means all women between first menstrual period and menopause should take folic acid supplements, refrain from smoking, maintain a healthy weight and keep chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes under control.
While most of these recommendations are well known to women who are pregnant or seeking to get pregnant, experts say it's important that women follow this advice throughout their reproductive lives, because about half of pregnancies are unplanned and so much damage can be done to a fetus between conception and the time the pregnancy is confirmed.
The recommendations aim to "increase public awareness of the importance of preconception health" and emphasize the "importance of managing risk factors prior to pregnancy," said Samuel Posner, co-author of the guidelines and associate director for science in the division of reproductive health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which issued the report. ... Breaking News: FBI Searches Wooded Area for Hoffa
May 17, 2006
A group of FBI investigators is searching a wooded area in the vicinity of Milford and Wixom in connection with the 1975 disappearance of Teamsters’ leader Jimmy Hoffa.
Investigators have cordoned off a section of woods where the bones of the long-missing union official may lie.
Hoffa was last seen at the Mocas Red Fox restaurant in Bloomfield Township in July 1975.
Speculation regarding his whereabouts – or his body’s whereabouts – certainly comes and goes.
Recently, a mob hitman named Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski wrote a book claiming that Hoffa’s body was compacted in a car that became scrap metal in New Jersey.
New NRA Campaign Asks Lawmakers to Pledge Not to Confiscate Guns in Times of Crisis
ABC News has learned that the powerful gun group will launch a new campaign on Thursday when it convenes its annual convention in Milwaukee and demand that police chiefs and mayors pledge to never confiscate weapons from law-abiding citizens in the wake of disasters such as hurricanes or terrorist attacks.
"We are going to ask every mayor and every police chief in America to take a pledge that they will never go door-to-door confiscating firearms from law-abiding citizens," Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, told ABC News in an exclusive interview airing this evening on "World News Tonight."
If you look carefully, you can see the demolitions crew across the street. It is planting the explosives in the Jew's building so he can implode it with the New York Fire Department's assistance.
A very close friend was killed in the South Tower. I guess for him .. I don't. Maybe it is a self-defense thing? If I found conclusive proof it was .. someone would die .. no scratch that .. a lot of people would die. I am certain I would lose my mind and kill anyone and everyone I could get to that was involved.
Hey guys, on last night's show you were jonesing for a copy of the 30 year-old script that Congressman and Nutjob Dana Rohrabacher optioned to convicted felon Joseph Medawar in a trade for access to top officials for Medawar's bogus reality show about the Department of Homeland Security.
Were you aware that the LA Times printed a synopsis of said script, and excerpts?
Former GOP official sentenced to 10 months for phone-jamming
CONCORD, N.H. Former Republican National Committee official James Tobin was sentenced to ten months in prison today for his role in an Election Day phone-jamming plot against New Hampshire Democrats.
Tobin, of Bangor, Maine, was found guilty in December on two felony telephone harassment charges. He also was fined ten-thousand dollars followed by two years probation. Prosecutors had asked for a two-year prison sentence.
Tobin, who s 45, was convicted of helping a top state GOP official find someone to jam Democratic get-out-the-vote lines on Election Day 2002. Republican John Sununu defeated then-Governor Jeanne Shaheen for the U.S. Senate that day.
During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe said he was impressed by character witnesses who testified on Tobin's behalf, but wished Tobin -- quote -- had a better sense of how serious this was.
New Presidential Memorandum Permits Intelligence Director To Authorize Telcos To Lie Without Violating Securities Law
Ordinarily, a company that conceals their transactions and activities from the public would violate securities law. But an presidential memorandum signed by the President on May 5 allows the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, to authorize a company to conceal activities related to national security. NSA Thwarts Whistleblower
The NSA denies that it practices retaliation against whistleblowers. Yet, Tice is still being monitored by the agency. In a January 9 letter to Tice, Renee Seymour, Director of NSA Special Access Programs Central Office, reminded him that he was required to report problems to “appropriately cleared individuals” at the NSA or Department of Defense before talking to any congressional committees—and reinforced that no one in either the House or the Senate Intelligence Committees was cleared to receive the information he wished to divulge.
http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/2650/
This means that Tice\'s expected testimony, previously expected to happen this week before a Congressional Committee will not happen. the NSA has just declared that it is above the laws of the United States.
