Anyone in the market for a Ipod Nano type device with more storage (6gb, expandable to 8) and that also plays videos? Ipod's first serious competition has just hit the shelves, SanDisk's Sansa e270. I'm not a shill for them, I'm just excited to be getting one this summer. It'll be cool watching the Daily Show out on the beach.

I posted only the facts of what many have seen you do here. I wasn't nasty at all but truthful. You seem to have a lot of problems being truthful as we have seen and you just admitted that you are a "bastard" in the above post.

You are the one that angerly attacked the facts of what I said without any evidence at all on your part. I offered prudent suggestions and you reacted by your typical harsh personal attack. That is your way but I will not play your malicious game. Grow up child, the discussion is over.

He knows what matters. We know that gettin to the bottom of this Jewish conspiracy to launch 9/11 from Israel with a time machine and cloaking device to plant explosives into the Pentagon and the World Trade Center so they could drain the treasury of compensatory damages and use it to launch the war against Iraq are most important.

regarding your post about Arbitron

years ago i filled out the booklets and
i mentioned a particularly bad local radio duo.
You know the two that are in the AM drive time and have a back and forth rapport
they have these at every radio station (I think)
In the back of the Arbitron booklets you can write
narrative notes instead of just yes, no, fill in the circle. I really let it rip about these two that were particularly bad, and within one week of arbitron's being released the radio station played commercials that specifically said ?we hear you we hear you" and that radio duo was gone immediately
I?m sure I wasn?t the only one that mentioned them but it felt good to be heard
and those two went on to better and bigger things locally so it was probably the best thing for
everyone.
So Arbitron really does matter -do AAR proud I wish Arbitron would give me the chance

National "Socialism" basically is FOX NEWS populism in service of fascism guised as 'socialism'.

Ernst Rohm SA drew ranks from these bogus laborites, basically a way to coopt Germany's very very substantial trade unions. The war economy made this strategy certain to succeed.

I would suggest the Bush regime has been trying to pull this.

The Nazi's had there own sell out trade unions and real socialist shut the hell up or went to the camps.

Fasces: set of rods bound in the form of a bundle which contained an axe. In ancient Rome, the bodyguards of a magistrate carried fasces.
The word fasces means "bundle" and refers to the fact that it is a bundle of rods, which surrounded an ax in the middle. In ancient Rome, the lictors carried fasces before consul, praetors and dictators, i.e., magistrates that held imperium (which means that they had the right to command and interpret the flight of the birds). Other people escorted by lictors with fasces were Vestal Virgins, governors, and the commanders of legions.

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at May 16, 2006 10:44 PM

In the eighteenth century, the fasces received a second life, when the young United States and republican France started to use ancient Roman symbols. Both were progressive revolutionary nations that imitated the Roman republican constitution.
The use of fasces by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini is quite another story. In 1921, he called his political movement Fasci di combattimento, fascio being the Italian word for peasant organizations and labor unions. When il duce chose the ancient Roman fasces as symbol of the fascist party, he was at the same time playing with the similarity of the words fascio and fasces, chosing an ancient symbol, and drawing a parallel between fascism and progressive movements of the past.

Hi toniD! A friend of mine gave me his copy back in the 80's which I read, and have re-read a number of times. I loaned it out and never go it back, since then I've replaced it many times, but still lose them through loans. I consider it a good deal.

BTW, unless Lincoln, Baigent and Leigh were lying, I believe them. I have their other books, too, and even spun off into the Dead Sea Scrolls stuff. The official genealogist to Royalty in Europe wrote a book called "Bloodline of the Holy Grail," which is very cool.

I have been a reader here on and off for a while but I finally must speak the truth after seeing how much of an obvious abuser and liar this person is.

This guy has never just sat there pleasantly but has set out to attack others first quite a lot of times for a long time. Looking back on this guy, who would have been banned from every other blog, he has been whining and hurting people here repeatedly for 2 years.

If one looks back in time at his posts here, he has been viciously attacking people with name calling and false accusations for most of those 2 years except when he was gone in self imposed exile. As jen said, his way is one of picking fights. That is what he loves to do.
It is clear to anyone that he has driven away an awful lot of good people from this blog. He is a bad seed that should be bounced from here so that civilized people can discuss things without his disruptive tactics.

Catholic Leaders Need to Show a Little Respect for Freedom

By Debi Ghate

This summer's blockbuster movie "The Da Vinci Code" is set to hit the big screen surrounded by controversy. Some Catholic leaders have asked their faithful to speak out against the film and to boycott it. Some bishops, however, take it even further than that. Archbishop Angelo Amato, a high-ranking Catholic official, says the movie is full of "offences, slander, historical and theological errors concerning Jesus, the gospel and the Church," which if "directed towards the Koran or the Shoah would have justifiably provoked a worldwide revolt. Yet because they were directed toward the Catholic Church, they remain unpunished." And Cardinal-Bishop Francis Arinze, a Papal candidate last year, added ominously: "Those who blaspheme Christ and get away with it are exploiting the Christian readiness to forgive and forget and to love even those who insult us. There are some religions that if you insult their founder they will not be just talking. They will make it painfully clear to you." (Emphases mine)

In issuing such veiled threats, the bishops are no doubt hinting at the vehement Muslim reaction to the Danish cartoons. In a frenzy of violence, Danish embassies were torched, people were murdered and the cartoonists went into hiding as protestors carried signs with slogans such as "Massacre those who insult Islam."

How can the bishops possibly call such actions justified and suggest that Christians imitate them?

Because, they claim, a person has a right to have his core beliefs respected--a right the cartoonists and filmmakers violated. "This is one of the fundamental human rights," Cardinal-Bishop Arinze pronounced in a statement eerily reminiscent of what Imams said regarding the Danish cartoons: "that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected." The Bishops are demanding respect--but can respect be demanded?

To respect something means to hold it in high regard. Respect is something that we reserve for the people and ideas we judge to be worthy of our love and admiration--we reserve it for what we value. Our respect is a precious commodity, use

Posted by: GG at May 16, 2006 11:39 PM

To respect something means to hold it in high regard. Respect is something that we reserve for the people and ideas we judge to be worthy of our love and admiration--we reserve it for what we value. Our respect is a precious commodity, used to express our sanction and approval of others and their actions. We respect Thomas Jefferson for writing the Declaration of Independence. We respect American soldiers who defend this great country's values. In contrast, we disrespect, even hate, those who oppose our values. If a white supremacist comes to your town to deliver a speech advocating that non-whites should be corralled and shot, do you have an obligation to respect his beliefs? Or should you speak out against what you consider to be evil, and in favor of what you judge to be good? And other cases are harder to judge. If your neighbor believes that a hard-working Mexican busboy should be deported because he is here without a work permit, do you have an obligation to respect that belief?

By suggesting that there is a "right to respect." the bishops are clamoring that we owe them respect regardless of whether we think their beliefs are true or false, worthy of our admiration or denunciation. Many people, of course, do respect the Catholic Church, but others agree with Enlightenment thinkers like Voltaire, who concluded: "Christianity is the most ridiculous, the most absurd and bloody religion that has ever infected the world." Respect can only be granted willingly, where we judge it to be due, not demanded by those whose ideas we conclude to be false or despicable. There can be no "right" to be respected.

By claiming that their "rights" have been violated, the bishops are calling for their faithful to demand government protection from "offensive" content. By asking that the filmmakers be punished, they are asking for censorship--for the filmmakers to silence themselves or be silenced by force. And their statements make it clear: If the government won't censor the filmmakers, Christians should make their displeasure "painfully clear." "Respect" granted at the point of a gun is not respect at all--it is a ransom for your life.

Our Founding Fathers created a revolutionary system that protect

Posted by: GG at May 16, 2006 11:40 PM

I'd hate to be a closeted heterosexual, always having to pretend I'm turned on by guys. The thought of having sex with guys would be repulsive for a straight guy, and pretending you're gay would feel like you're agreeing with the idea that there's something wrong with being straight. But you better be convincing in your alleged love of dick, or they'll know you're not really gay. The choice is between being a self-loathing closet-case, or admitting you're straight, risking a heterophobic reaction. Come out at work, and other employees might set you up for a "straight-bashing."

Our Founding Fathers created a revolutionary system that protects each individual's rights, including the right to express his ideas regardless of their popularity or whom they offend. Our country is proof that the system works. Catholics can voice their displeasure, even their disrespect, for a movie; filmmakers can present a controversial story that millions will pay to see. Each can criticize the other and peacefully walk away. It is in that spirit that "The Da Vinci Code" filmmakers have a right to release their movie without the threat of force from Catholic bishops. And this is a right the bishops need to learn to respect.

BREAKING NEWS: 100 voting machines broken

More than 100 voting machines are reported to be broken across the city, the Daily News has learned.

Apparently, the machines were broken when polls opened this morning -- they keep spitting out the paper tape that keeps the tally of the vote. It is the largest breakdown since we started using the new voting machines.

The broken machines were first reported in the weblog for TheNextMayor.com. Expect more on this story in tomorrow's Daily News.

The local ABC affiliate has more details. Amongst them...

The biggest problems have been at voting locations where multiple failures have been reported.

Ward 12, Division 20 in Germantown is one such location. Judge of Elections Bernard Bibbs followed the routine startup procedure, but neither machine would activate. In one case, the write-in paper tape just unrolled and then refused to roll back up. In the other case, the machine will only beep and do nothing else.

Bernard Bibbs/Judge of Elections: "We set them up the way they're supposed to be run electronically. They've been shut down all morning.... We're dead."

Thanks, GG...

BTW, I finally watched to one of biographies on "The Falls" webiste, and now I get it.

Before, I'd only read one of the biographies all the way through, which I thought was just creepy. About a woman who lived next to the orchard, and her kids saw a rag in the year and asked what it was. She called it some weird name, the kids laughed, scaring some sheep, and that night she had her VUE. Her breasts became re-absorbed into her body and the tips of her fingers and toes shrivelled. This is what creeped me out.

It's actually funny, isn't it? I'm still going to see it.

I'll checkout the other one you posted too.

Yeah she did, although I don't think she's brought it up recently. I've been listening to the show from the beginning, and she mentioned being proud of the movie quite a few times. As a compliment to the audience (and herself, and her movie), she said Majority listeners are the kind of people who'd see midnight showings of the movie.

I don't know why she likes it so much, my favorite movie she's been in is Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion. She's also done a ton of other movies I've never seen, I wish she'd recommend her favorites for us to rent.

JAIN GODHOOD: The concept of God is very unique in Jains. Appropriate synonyms are not found in English or other languages to express the full meaning of several terms used in Jain philosophy, metaphysics, or ethics. This unique concept also has an impact on the meaning of prayer, bhakti and worship which attach to pure soul and obscure its natural qualities. Pure soul's natural qualities include omniscience and bliss. Based on the type and amount of karma, a soul takes a body form and has four minor categories of karma with it which define the body, life span, social standing, pleasure and pain. The cycle of birth/death continues until the removal of all Ghati Karma. The path of removal of karma is the Jain path of purification or spiritual progress which ultimately leads to perfection or Godhood.

WHAT GODHOOD IS NOT: Jains do not believe in God taking part in creation, destruction, or maintenance of the universe. Also, it does not believe in incarnation of God. Jainism is not Atheism or "Nastika-Darshan" as it is sometimes labeled. Jains believe in God - as the Supreme State of Beings. If western semitic sense of "Theism" is taken, requiring creation theory, then Jains may be considered an atheism but further explanation must be provided. It follows that Jains do not believe in prophets as Creator God's messengers. God is not involved in providing material things to the asking devotee. Thus, the God in Jains may be loosely equated to the Christian or Hindu God (not demigods) minus creation.

I don't know how harshly she's bad-mouthed it, but it never really appealed to me, so I imagine I'd only consider it an accurate appraisal. Janeane wanted to be in Flirting With Disaster, but was turned down for being too heavy. That movie I did like, at least when it was new, and it's still fairly interesting, and a lot edgier than Cats. Cats was to be her star vehical after she lost the weight, but it wasn't a big box-office success. After one other failed starring role, she returned to supporting roles. No problem as long as the movie is funny (like Romy). She's also done a lot of obscure dramas, surely there's a few of them she's proud of, I'm curious which ones.

Violence is spreading like wildfire all over the world and is devouring human life. It is a matter of grave concern to all of us and so our conscience urges us to do something in this direction: PRACTICING AHIMSA in everyday life, creating literature, holding conferences, seminars and increasing the consciousness of Reverence for All Life - these are the ways to peace. And with our sincere practice, meditation and prayer, we create vibrations of awareness of Reverence for Life; in this way, we help nullify the idea of de humanizing war and violence in the world at large.

Bhagwan Mahavira has shown us by the examples of his own life experiences that nonviolence and compassion are the answers for peace and well being. In order to expunge violence, one has to remove it from thoughts, from feelings, from the mind, and from one's expression. Knowing this law of life, we can purify our minds with meditation and understanding, and then with guidance we can help our children avoid becoming victims of this materialistic world where violence is predominant.

Jains emphasize potency of karma as the basic principle of Samsara (relative world) resembling Purva Mimamsa. It also emphasizes that each individual soul is a potential Parmatman (omniscient ultimate state) resembling Uttar Mimamsa, i.e. Vedanta.

GODHOOD: Godhood is the perfected state of soul and supreme manifestation of human excellence. Godhood is latent in ordinary individuals (souls) who become God upon removal of karma by their own effort. Upon complete removal of all four categories of Ghati Karma, the perfected human being becomes Arihanta God. At this state, the God remains human and has perfect knowledge (without bounds of time and space). When the life span of this last body form is completed, soul is said to reach Nirvana or Moksha and is referred to as Siddha God. This state of soul is the ultimate and associated with it are perfect power and bliss.

Long before AAR, I was a big Janeane fan in the mid-90s for her comedy concerts on Comedy Central. I don't know if they originally aired on HBO, and I don't remember how many of them there were. A new one would just show up every once in a while. I'd like to see them again. Loved the public feud she had with Joan Rivers for instance!

HBO should give her another comedy concert. If she was red-hot in the mid-90s, arguably the hottest female stand-up at the time, she should be given another chance. She's morphed into a female Bill Maher now, liberals would love her just as much. Even if she wasn't as political in the mid-90s, I think she still made it clear she was a liberal, and that's part of why I liked her. I'll bet one of the things she dislikes about Cats is it attracted a more mainstream, politically moderate following. I've seen those fans on her message boards whining about her new far-left persona. I wouldn't like them, even if they liked me.

PSYOP Creates Visual Haiku for MTV HD

It has been said that "God is in the details." That sentiment is strikingly rendered in a series of new station identification spots for MTV HD, co-directed by Psyop's Marco Spier and Marie Hyon. The revolutionary network will feature exclusively HD work and 5.1 surround sound from MTV, VH1 and CMT. Psyop designed six 15-second station IDs which are extracts from a strikingly detailed 90-second film, also to be aired in its entirety on MTV HD.

"This was a great opportunity," says Justin Booth Clibborn, Psyop's executive producer. "MTV asked us to "do our thing" and create a spot that would really push the limits of the format. They gave us their complete trust and support to come up with something very different and unexpected. What we gave them can best be described as a ‘visual haiku,' a spot that is all the more detailed and effective because of its seeming minimalism."

"MTV gave us complete creative license," agrees Hyon. "The only creative rule we had to follow was that it was about music. Our creative exploration focused on the intersection of visual art and sound, and we were determined to create something stark in color and organic in motion. Our task was ultimately to translate the purity of the music into a moving picture. Following that, we approached this project as if it was a video installation, rather than on-air packaging— HD would allow us to create a more powerful and more fully immersive experience. We wanted to create a truly epic piece."

The crowd at the annual meeting of the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association came to its feet this weekend at the news that senior presidential adviser Karl Rove had been indicted on perjury charges in the CIA leak case. Trouble is, it wasn't true.

The rumor appears to have been started by a left-wing Web site called, of all things, Truthout.org, which reported that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald went over the charges with Rove's attorney for 15 hours on Friday, and that Rove later informed the White House of his impending resignation.

Rove's lawyer says no such meeting occurred and that Fitzgerald was in Chicago on Friday. And a spokesman for Rove denied any such conversations with White House officials. Truthout.org, meanwhile, says it stands by its story.

And he wouldn't have let her get away with badmouthing the film or the production....

I think that because Janeane is a real person who is very introspective, depsite or even because of her idiosyncracies, she would have been quite good in that role. Of course, that's not always why they cast who they cast .. it's about box office.

Brad Pitt was great in Fight Club...

One of his best performances...

Don't underestimate the power of a great filmmaker....can make shitty blowhard celebrity drug addicts give great performances (remember Courtney Love in The People vs. Larry Flynt, directed by Milos Forman, a very good filmmaker)...

Even though, Courtney never followed that film up with anything significant, other than more drug use...a shame...

Meet Joe Black was a turd of epic proportions....

But those first 3 were directed by great directors (Twelve Monkeys was from our friend, Terry Gilliam)...

Posted by: GG at May 17, 2006 1:50 AM

Janeane can act. Her role on West Wing was just on a trial basis at first, but she got a terrific response and was made a regular. I know *I* would love her best attempt about being a female Bill Maher, because I think she's very funny on Majority Report, and the same things that make her see red are what piss me off too. Maybe the mainstream wouldn't like her, but they're the idiots that put Bush in office twice.

I don't know how much of a "response" she got on The West Wing...

She got into it with Lawrence O'Donnell over the unrealistic tone of the show (one of my peeves about the show, and its depiction of political operatives as really good people trying to do the right thing)....

And the show was pretty much over by the time she got on it...its popularity declined over the last few years...not Janeane's fault, obviously...

Posted by: GG at May 17, 2006 2:01 AM

She wasn't going to be hired as a regular unless she made a splash. She made a splash.

So what don't we like about her? I think she pesters Sam too much, but he always takes it in stride. I don't know if it's just that he's terminally polite to women, or if he's easy going with everyone. I remember Josh once saying Sam can be "a pill." That was a little behind the scenes glimpse, Josh thinks he can be a jerk sometimes. But he only meant he can be annoying, not that he hates him.

And Janeane can act childishly to the point of it being extremely annoying, but she admits to being immature at times. But it's also that obnoxiousness that makes her funny, she just goes overboard with it sometimes.

Those jackers weren't good enough to hit the interior rings of the pentagon. They were lucky enough to be barely above the ground coming in. There is frames of the front fuselage of the plane you can see then kablooey when all the fuel ignites. Pretty awful site to see.

The pentagon is made of very thick highly reinforced concrete. A very thin aluminum tube & thin hollow wings hitting that at high speed would disintegrate pretty good in addition to being consumed by flames.

I read the specs on the pentagon somewhere. It is more than substantial and solid.

Why specifically do you say that MJP?

It looks like regular color video security camera footage from the outside perimeter(looks like by parking) with only a few frames applicable as the plane was flying at over 500 mph.

It has to be combined with the testimony of all the eyewitnesses at the pentagon and the information from the plane tracking.

The reason it was released now is because of a freedom of information act formal request by several news organizations & others to release it. It was part of the evidence against moussaiwe, then he was convicted so there was no longer any legal reason to keep it secret.

It was moving at a very high rate of speed into that super thick reinforced outer concrete wall. It looked like there was only 1 frame that had the front fuselage in it before it hit and exploded. With video at 30 frames per second that would make sense time wise as the angle of view wasn't very wide.

I agree Fish.

There is not many reasons(rare strong downdraft is one) that you can't fly a jet plan low to the ground for a short distance until you run into something like a solid structure or poles or the ground. There have been many jet crashes that have been on a slow downward trajectory. However I wouldn't call it "flying". It is more of a loosely controlled crash path.

Fish, muck and I have read a lot of material on this. People will have their own opinions but they won't be forensically scientific.

Award winning director, producer and actor Ed Asner is the latest high profile public figure to voice his support for Charlie Sheen's stance on 9/11 and share his own concerns about 9/11, the war in Iraq and the Neo-Cons.

Speaking to The Alex Jones Show Asner, best known for his Emmy-winning role as Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, echoed Charlie Sheen's sentiments in stating, "I became suspicious of 9/11 on the day it happened."

"I will always be that suspect of it and challenge it and challenge various points of it," said Asner.

Asner agreed that the official story of 9/11 and the Kean Commission investigation was a fable and a fraud.

"I do not buy it and I would challenge it, I know all of these points....the standing down," said Asner.

Asner questioned why no authority figures had been fired for their inability to prevent 9/11.

"Nobody in high office has ever paid the penalty for keeping us unprepared for 9/11, no one has paid the price and I cite the fact that Abu Ghraib was another typical example of the way this government works," said Asner.

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at May 17, 2006 4:58 AM

His public stance on 9/11 and his support of Charlie Sheen helps in the ongoing effort to encourage public figures with large media platforms to step forward and become prominent voices for the 9/11 truth movement.

"Many of the purported hijackers are living persons elsewhere," said Asner highlighting a story reported by BBC and others that several of the so-called perpetrators of 9/11 visited their embassies in protest that they had been identified as terrorists.

Asked who gained from 9/11 Asner answered, "Certainly the military has, Halliburton, Brown and Root, Mr. Cheney's old outfit....the oil companies of course now with record highs, and the White House is of course involved with oil and the military and always has been."

Asner doubted that another terror attack needed to be staged in order to accomplish more of the same agenda.

"They don't have to have another attack, if they indeed launched the first one they have screwed up our country so badly they could just let us sink in upon ourselves."

Asner questioned why CNN chose to cancel his scheduled spot on Showbiz Tonight. After speaking to inside sources within CNN we were able to confirm that the order came down from a higher office to "kill" the story, despite the fact that the issue had generated the most interest Showbiz Tonight had ever encountered.

Asner is a true humanitarian and is an activist in the fields of missing US PoW's, depleted uranium, which Asner suggested was a deliberate population reduction method, and the fight to get the FDA to eliminate deadly thimerosal mercury additives to vaccines.

His public stance on 9/11 and his support of Charlie Sheen helps in the ongoing effort to encourage public figures with large media platforms to step forward and become prominent voices for the 9/11 truth movement.

CHARLIE Sheen has joined the 9/11 gone-bonkers brigade. The "Two and a Half Men" star gave a bizarre interview on GGN Radio Network's conspiracy-minded "The Alex Jones Show," in which he suggested that the federal government was covering up what "really" happened. "It seems to me like 19 amateurs with boxcutters taking over four commercial airliners and hitting 75 percent of their targets, that feels like a conspiracy theory. It raises a lot of questions," Sheen said. "A couple of years ago, it was severely unpopular to talk about any of this. It feels like from the people I talk to, and the research I've done and around my circles, it feels like the worm is turning." Sheen said the collapse of the Twin Towers looked like a "controlled demolition." The out-there actor also expressed his disbelief over how one of the planes hit the Pentagon. "Just show us how this particular plane pulled off these maneuvers . . . It is up to us to reveal the truth. It is up to us because we owe it to the families, we owe it to the victims, we owe it to everyone's life who was drastically altered, horrifically, that day and forever. We owe it to them to uncover what happened."

Before you read this article, conduct this test. Try to purchase some stock, or some futures, a mutual fund or some put options, without providing your identity. Go ahead and try it! See if you get anywhere. Find out what happens when you tell the investment firm that you want to make a huge investment anonymously. It can’t be done.

Then ask yourself this question: How could someone have placed anonymous put options on American Airlines and United Airlines just prior to the attacks of 9/11? Then ask yourself why no one has investigated this suspicious deal. Ask yourself why there has been no attempt by the US government to identify the person who anticipated huge profits from a disaster that was yet to occur. Is it because the trail possibly leads to the CIA?

Then wonder about the collapse of Building 7 on the day of the attacks. Ask yourself why the owner of the building allowed the building to be pulled down (intentionally demolished) hours after the Twin Towers fell. Pulling down a building takes weeks of planning and preparation so that explosives can be safely positioned and wired. Not so in this case. Wonder why.

If you have any doubts at all about the official 9/11 story, then the answers to these questions are all the proof you need that something is very, very wrong!

Independent 9/11 researchers have worked nonstop since the events to examine the events of 9/11 and they have uncovered enough information to seriously challenge the official versions of what happened on that fateful day. But maybe, just maybe, the very fact that massive amounts of information are available is a problem in itself. There may be far too much evidence for most Americans to face.

ima gointa skip on alexjones. ima get better "trooth" frum chuck jones.

Posted by: muck4doo at May 17, 2006 5:10 AM

The challenges to the official stories may be too devastating to be processed by the average American who has spent a lifetime believing in the system. Many people can deal with the minor violations that are part of the political scene, but cannot possibly fathom a government that might be complicit in an attack on its own people. They are not unlike the parents who eventually come to terms with a child’s shoplifting spree. The same parents would do anything to deny far more serious accusations. Imagine the response of parents whose son turns out to be a Timothy McVeigh.

Some things are so disturbing that they are almost impossible to believe. That is why, in the 9/11 enigma, less is more. There is a real danger of frightening everyone off by offering too much information. Therefore, if we think of the problem as a chess game, two strategic moves can lead to checkmate.

There are two pieces of the 9/11 puzzle that on their own expose the lies of the administration.

Two questions must be raised so that even the most diehard Bush supporters realize they have been deceived. These are issues that no one can debate or dismiss. These are not conspiracy theories. They are fact-based questions that can lead to exposing the deceptions in the official reports. The apologists have no way to explain these away or justify them. Basically, they offer clear evidence that the official explanations of 9/11 are meaningless

I recently watched the film LOOSE CHANGE and couldn't believe what I learned. I thought that I had read and heard everything about 9/11, but I was wrong. This film makes quite a case for an alternate view of what happened on September 11th, 2001.

I found two major media sources that have written about this film so far.

USA Today gave it the biggest write-up to date.

The NY Times also made mention of it.

I watched the entire film on the internet. I dont think many people realize the power of the internet. To distribute a film such as this on the world wide web was simply brilliant. It never would have gotten the backing it needed from a major studio. The internet affords anyone the opportunity to see it, and everyone needs to! In this day and age of information traveling as quickly as it does, hopefully these simple facts from September 11th will reach a greater audience.

I think that any American who has the resources of high-speed internet should not wait one more second to watch this film. If you don't have high-speed at your house then go to the library. I guarantee you that you will see and hear things that will blow your mind.

I'm not saying that I agree with everything in the film or that it is a perfect piece of filmmaking. However, it does make some incredibly compelling cases about a few things from 9/11 over which i have certainly lost sleep.

For example, the film shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that the World Trade Center buildings collapsed because there were explosions all the way down. There is no way that a fire caused the buildings to collapse. You can see in the video, which we have all seen 1 million times, that each floor explodes as the towers collapse to the ground.

The filmmakers have obvioulsy spent an enormous amount of time researching and going through an immense amount of evidencount of evidence from that day. What they found is very different from what our leaders are telling us.

Another thing that has been hotly contested but virtually proven in this film is that the Pentagon was not hit by a regular-sized passenger plane. What did hit the Pentagon then? Was it a missile? I ask you to watch this film and make your own conclusions.

One thing that the film made me ask was why haven't our leaders raised these questions yet? Why did it have to take a movie that was essentially distributed on the internet to raise these simple questions?

Where are our senators and congressman now? Why aren't they doing more to raise these issues? Why haven't they taken the time to do the research that needs to be done to get to the bottom of one of the most tragic days in American history?

If any politicians are reading this right now, I implore you to take a look at this film and do something about these issues immediately. It is not about your reputation or your poll numbers. Doing what is right will gain the respect of the people every time.

I think that we should all demand answers from our government and our leaders about 9/11. These issues are not too old to re-hash and we as Americans owe it to ourselves and to the history books to get to the bottom of what really happened on September 11th, 2001. I for one am not satisfied with what we have been told.

Frankly, given Bush's track record during his presidency, I feel we should probably be taking another look at almost everything that has come out of his mouth. September 11th is an American tragedy of monumental proportions and its not enough to just file it away and say that we got to the bottom of that one.

In this day and age w

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at May 17, 2006 5:22 AM

In this day and age where information is being passed around at an incredible rate, maybe we can get some truths out of our government that we were not able to in the past.

Kennedy was assassinated with a "magic" bullet. America has essentially accepted this. I won't even go there, but I will say that we need to take a hard look at what happened on September 11th and this film is a first step in that direction.

Watch the film and make up your own mind.

Tom Wisker hosts a program called Weaponry on WBAI on Tuesday night at 1:30 P.M. in NYC.

Found this post on Kos

Military Air expert (4.00 / 2)
on Pacifica radio, Tom Wisker said the plane hit near the roofline which is why the damage to the facade and building doesn't look like an airplane hit it directly (it didn't hit it directly, the wing and part of the fuselage did). And there were eye witnesses and bits of airplane. The jet was travelling at very high speed.

Tom Wisker also explained that when a plane crashes in an open field, the heat dissipates into the air and more of the plane is left....but compressed indoors like at the WTC, Pentagon...the heat is concentrated (all that jet fuel!) and incinerates the plane. Little residue.

The security camera's video isn't constant. It takes pictures at short intervals (like those jumpy compressed videos from astronauts). It's like blinking ....you don't see everything.

Beware of conspiracy theories about the buildings--Tom Wisker said that the LaRouche people are spreading rumors. I heard their allegations about structural failure and building fires and they got it all wrong.

As for the radiation levels, if it is depleted uranium it will stay in the area for like a billion years, so it should still be measurable.

Rest assured, many would love to send us off chasing wild geese so we will take our eyes off the real problems.

Pentagon releases 9/11 video
By Rupert Cornwell in Washington
Published: 17 May 2006
Almost five years after the event, pictures were released yesterday that appear to capture the moment when American Airlines flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon in Washington DC, on 11 September, 2001.

The pictures, obtained by the legal rights group Judicial Watch, consist of frames taken every half second by a security camera at a Pentagon parking lot.

So indistinct are the pictures they are unlikely to quell conspiracy theories on the internet that there was no plane, but a missile, that day. The real question is why the Pentagon blocked their release for so long.

Sibel Edmonds, a 32-year-old Turkish-American, was hired as a translator by the FBI shortly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 because of her knowledge of Middle Eastern languages. She was fired less than a year later in March 2002 for reporting shoddy work and security breaches to her supervisors that could have prevented those attacks.

Edmonds has been fighting the corruption permeating the FBI since her unfair dismissal and sued to contest her firing in July 2002. On July 6, 2004 , Judge Reggie Walton in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia dismissed Edmonds' case, citing the government's state secrets privilege. The American Civil Liberties Union is representing Edmonds in her appeal of that ruling. Oral arguments in the case are scheduled for April 21, 2005.

The privilege, when properly invoked, permits the government to block the release in litigation of any material that, if disclosed, would cause harm to national security. However, the government has employed the privilege to dismiss Edmonds' entire case in an effort to protect itself from embarrassment. While an FBI translator, Edmonds discovered poorly translated documents relevant to the 9-11 attacks and reported the shoddy work to her supervisors. She also expressed concerns about a co-worker who had previously worked for an organization under FBI surveillance and had a relationship with a foreign intelligence officer also under surveillance. In addition, Edmonds claimed that she was told to work slowly to give the appearance that the agency was overworked so it would receive a larger budget, despite a large backlog of documents that needed translating.

Even though she followed all appropriate procedures for reporting her concerns up the chain of command, Edmonds was retaliated against and fired. After her termination, many of Edmonds' allegations were confirmed by the FBI in unclassified briefings to Congress. More than two years later, in May 2004, the Justice Department retroactively classified Edmonds' briefings, as well as the FBI briefings, and forced Members of Congress who had the information posted on their Web sites to remove the documents.

Gagged by Ashcroft: Sibel Edmond's story still untold

Sibel Edmonds, the FBI translator who was fired in 2002 after complaining about bureau incompetence, stood with Vietnam-era whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg outside the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C., Monday morning to denounce government secrecy.

The impetus for the gathering was supposed to have been a hearing before U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton on whether Edmonds would be allowed to testify in a lawsuit filed by families of 9/11 victims who accused members of the Saudi royal family of financing the attacks. Attorney General John Ashcroft has sought to block Edmonds' testimony as a danger to national security. The judge canceled the hearing without explanation, but Edmonds and Ellsberg went ahead with their news conference.

Age has softened Ellsberg's voice, but he is still angry. The former Defense Department official who leaked the Pentagon Papers recounted his history with Richard Nixon's attorney general, the late John Mitchell, who authorized the "dirty tricks" campaign that, among other excesses, resulted in a break-in of the office of Ellsberg's psychiatrist to look for dirt on the war critic.

Ellsberg said he could not trust Attorney General John Ashcroft to expose the flaws of federal law enforcement. "So I rely on her judgment," he said, gesturing to Edmonds, a petite Turkish-American woman in a black suit with her dark brown hair swept up in a loose bun.

Edmonds told the gathered reporters and activists that Ashcroft is "worried about the truth, because truth will bring about accountability." Fluent in Farsi, Arabic and Turkish, she became an American citizen ten years ago. "I took a citizenship oath … to defend this country against all enemies, foreign and domestic," Edmonds said to applause.

New Tape Stirs Up 9/11 Conspiracy Theories: Pentagon Video Officially Released

The minute the Pentagon released images of the Sept. 11 attack on its building, the message boards at ABCNEWS.com lit up with conspiracy theories.

Some blame it on an inside job by members of the Bush administration to benefit their business interests. Some say it was planned by neoconservatives to advance their worldview. Others don't know what happened but doubt the official story put forward by the government.

The world of conspiracy theories surrounding the Sept. 11 attacks is vast, and more than four years after the worst terrorist incident on U.S. soil, countless scenarios are put forth on the Internet, in academic forums and on talk radio each day. Some are of the "MIHOP" variety, which claim people in power made it happen on purpose, while others are of the "LIHOP" kind -- they let it happen on purpose.

With Tuesday's release of video footage of American Airlines Flight 77 crashing into the Pentagon building, an attack that killed 184 people on Sept. 11, questions rage again.

"It doesn't clarify anything -- I don't see a plane in that image," said Michael Berger, spokesman for 911Truth.org. "In fact, I thought that was underwhelming."

Berger said 911Truth.org "would like to see various conspiracy theories laid to rest as well" and does not believe the government has addressed "inherent contradictions" in evidence and testimony surrounding the events of that day.

"We would like to know what happened," he said. "Four-and-a-half years later, we still don't have definitive proof that a plane hit that building."

Follow the Money: Bush, 9/11, and Deep Threat:

by Fran Shor

“What did the President know and when did he know it?” This question, evocative of the Watergate investigation, is now being posed by politicians and pundits seeking to determine what information the Bush Administration had prior to the incidents of September 11, 2001. No amount of denial and back-pedaling by the Bush Administration can cover up the fact that Bush had advance knowledge of possible terror attacks on US targets by the followers of Osama bin Laden. While it’s clear that Bush was personally briefed on August 6, 2001 about the possibility of those attacks, it remains unclear about the nature and extent of precautions, if any, taken to prevent such attacks.

Nonetheless, there is a welter of material that points to the Bush Administration’s obstruction and neglect of important leads to link bin Laden to operations in the United States. Moreover, in the months and weeks leading up to 9/11 there were warnings and signs that some members of the Administration and its national security apparatus were anticipating something horrendous. In the aftermath of 9/11 the Bush Administration mobilized the war machine and repressive legislation to promote policies that secured its economic and ideological agenda. Thus, a more intriguing and significant question is: in light of what the Bush Administration gained from the fall-out of 9/11, how was that gain embedded in the actions and inactions by the Bush Administration prior to 9/11? To ask the question about the reaping of political advantage from the tragedy of 9/11 need not assume that there was a conspiracy by the Bush Administration; merely that certain players acted out of their personal interests at the expense of the safety and security of the nation.

To piece together the various activities of these players in the Bush Administration one should recall another key component of Watergate - the famous advice of “Deep Throat,” the Washington insider, to Bob Woodward, the investigative reporter from the Washington Post. When Woodward was having trouble connecting all the dots and p

Avoid U.S. health model: Clinton:

The answer to Canada's health-care woes does not lie in the "insane" system in place south of the border, former U.S. president Bill Clinton said last night.

Speaking in Toronto, Mr. Clinton said that reform may be needed in Canada, but he argued forcefully that the U.S. model is a "colossal waste of money" that is "killing" his country competitively.

"It's a good thing, your health care system, with all of its problems," Mr. Clinton told supporters of the inaugural World Leaders Forum, which he co-headlined with Israeli Vice-Premier Shimon Peres.

World Net Daily-- [Bush] lied when he said: "Massive deportation of the people here is unrealistic - it's just not going to work." Not only will it work, but one can easily estimate how long it would take. If it took the Germans less than four years to rid themselves of 6 million Jews, many of whom spoke German and were fully integrated into German society, it couldn't possibly take more than eight years to deport 12 million illegal aliens, many of whom don't speak English and are not integrated into American society.

World Net Daily:Chomsky hails Hezbollah on TV:Leftist American professor says U.S. leading terrorist state:

Hosted by Hezbollah, leftist professor Noam Chomsky ended his visit to Lebanon with a tour of Al-Khiam Prison where he declared the terrorist group's success in removing Israel from the south was "a victory for all the peoples that fight injustice and oppression."

In a broadcast by Hezbollah's Al Manar television Sunday, translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute, Chomsky was shown embracing Hezbollah leader Nabil Qauq at Al-Khiam, where Israel kept prisoners during its occupation of southern Lebanon. Hezbollah was credited with liberating the area after Israel withdrew in 2000.

The U.S. State Department lists Hezbollah as a "terrorist organization." Hezbollah Sec.-Gen. Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah frequently calls for destruction of the U.S. In a February speech aired on Al Manar, he led a crowd in chants, "America, America you are the Great Satan … America, America, the enemy of the Muslims … Those who have come at night, like bats, will hear Lebanon saying: Death to America."

Punishing Free Speech ~ A Travesty of an "Investigation" ~ By WARD CHURCHILL

I have received the report of the Investigative Committee of the University of Colorado and consider it a travesty. This "investigation" has all along been a pretext to punish me for engaging constitutionally-protected speech and, more generally, to discredit the sorts of alternative historical perspective I represent.

There is blatant conflict of interest involved. Interim Chancellor DiStefano, who has consistently and publicly declared his bias against me, has served from the outset as both "complainant" and judge.

Despite my repeated requests for an investigation conducted by unbiased experts, the committee was composed primarily of CU insiders. Although both were available and willing to serve, the investigative panel included neither American Indian scholars nor persons competent in American Indian Studies.

More phone companies added to class action lawsuit
by Chris in Paris - 5/17/2006 03:48:00 AM

AT&T and BellSouth are now added to the class action suit against Verizon. Let's see how well the rule of law works in the US these days.

The complaint, filed in Manhattan District Court, is asking that the companies pay $200 billion in fines to their 200 million subscribers.

Attorneys Carl Mayer and Bruce Afran said that since the lawsuit was filed Friday they have been overwhelmed with calls from people wanting to join the suit.

"They are violating federal law, which mandates a minimum penalty of $1,000 for every person whose records have been disclosed," Afran said, adding that many who have called his office are "outraged" by the government's and phone companies' actions.

LINK

This will be interesting to watch. Just the idea of a class action suit against huge companies having to spend money on this will be interesting to watch. Which appointed Judge will try to quash this?

Why Religion Must End: Interview with Sam Harris

A leading atheist says people must embrace rationalism, not faith--or they will never overcome their differences.

Interview by Laura Sheahen

Sam Harris is not your grandfather's atheist. The award-winning writer practices Zen meditation and believes in the value of mystical experiences. But he's adamant in his belief that religion does more harm than good in the world, and has sparked controversy by suggesting that when it comes to faith-based violence, religious moderates are part of the problem, not the solution. Beliefnet editor Laura Sheahen spoke with him about his provocative book "The End of Faith" and his comments at the World Congress of Secular Humanism, where this interview was conducted.

You've said that nonbelievers must try to convince religious people "of the illegitimacy of their core beliefs." Why are these beliefs dangerous?

On the subject of religious belief, we relax standards of reasonableness and evidence that we rely on in every other area of our lives. We relax so totally that people believe the most ludicrous propositions, and are willing to organize their lives around them. Propositions like "Jesus is going to come back in the next fifty years and rectify every problem that human beings create"--or, in the Muslim world, "death in the right circumstances leads directly to Paradise." These beliefs are not very contaminated with good evidence.

There are beliefs--like kids believing in the tooth fairy--that I wouldn't say are dangerous.

Oh, so now we're "informing" judges rather than getting their approval for illegal searches
by John in DC - 5/16/2006 11:39:00 PM

This is lovely. Two FISA judges were "informed" that the NSA was going to be collecting all of our phone records, per Orrin Hatch.
Two judges on the secretive court that approves warrants for intelligence surveillance were told of the broad monitoring programs that have raised recent controversy, a Republican senator said Tuesday, connecting a court to knowledge of the collecting of millions of phone records for the first time....

Asked if the judges somehow approved the operations, Hatch said, "That is not their position, but they were informed."
Oh, well, if judges were "informed" that we were going to begin mass illegal spying on American citizens, then that makes it constitutional and legal. Silly me, I thought judges were the ones who decided such things.

Bush has already deported more people than any other president in U.S. history.

Since he took office ICE has deported some 150,000 migrants a year and had deported 881,478 people through 2005, figures that do not include, for example, the 1.2 million people who were arrested at the U.S.-Mexican border itself last year.

Saving the Internet is Saving Freedom

Way back in Viet Nam times, not only didn’t we have the internet, we didn’t even need it. Hey, we were out there marching and hollering because we were all pretty much aware of the lies our government was attempting to foist on us. How so? Well, for one thing, the Viet Nam war was the first war ever to be reported via live TV. This meant that TV reporters, TV cameras were out there shooting the truth. This meant photographing, for eternity, that little girl fleeing naked from napalm. It meant photographing for eternity an “allied” officer shooting a dissenter in the head as the dissenter knelt in the dirt at the officer’s feet. And it meant photographing for eternity that famous, infamous wagonload of injured US soldiers being transported out of a battle zone. Hordes of helicopters flying over villages “destroyed to keep them safe from the Viet Cong,” replete with the murdered lying in the mud. It was all there for us to see.

If our government was hiding its true motives for involving the U.S.A. in a manufactured war, lying blatantly about the Vietnamese sinking ships in the Gulf of Tonkin, it didn’t matter. All of us who protested were able to access media, were able to watch live coverage of this sin against humanity on TV and decide for ourselves how we wanted to deal -- or not deal -- with it. .

All that has changed. This time around, all media is censored, only news that the government believes will assist in propaganda efforts is being released, and that ain’t much. Apparently, the “Decider” running this Iraq version of Viet Nam has decided that even a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Therefore, in today’s Iraqi Viet Nam re-play, you may view soldiers in Baghdad, rifles at ready, gaining forcible entry into homes, charging upstairs while occupants watch silently. We may view soldiers in their tanks and humvees driving along roads surrounded by unexploded “I.E.D,s” (improvised Explosive Devices) along with lots of photos of Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts.

by John in DC - 5/16/2006 11:28:00 PM

Uh, if the USA Today story was false, then why did it take Verizon 5 days to say so? I don't buy it, and AP seems to agree that Verizon's explanation isn't quite clear at all.
"One of the most glaring and repeated falsehoods in the media reporting is the assertion that, in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Verizon was approached by NSA and entered into an arrangement to provide the NSA with data from its customers' domestic calls," the statement read.

The denials leave open the possibility that the NSA directed its requests to long-distance companies, which collect billing data on long-distance calls placed by local-service customers of BellSouth and Verizon.
I'll add a few other possibilities:

Rove vs. Reality

By E. J. Dionne Jr.
Tuesday, May 16, 2006; A17

It was in the middle of a question-and-answer session yesterday after a speech defending President Bush's economic record that Karl Rove let drop a phrase that told us everything.

Speaking at the American Enterprise Institute, Rove started talking about "game changers," a nice, wonky term to throw around at a leading conservative think tank. The idea is that certain changes in policy can push the political debate in new and -- from the point of view of the game changer -- more congenial directions. The phrase told us everything about what Bush's No. 1 guy had once hoped to accomplish -- and everything about the fix he and the president are now in.

Rove's hope was that at the end of the Bush presidency, he and his boss would have so changed the rules of the policy and political game that all the pressures would be for lower taxes, less domestic spending, more market-friendly approaches to health care, and private accounts within Social Security.

There has indeed been a lot of game-changing going on, but Rove's remarks served to underscore that the game has, from his point of view, been changing in exactly the wrong way. At certain moments, he almost admitted as much.

snip

Bush's economic policies, particularly his tax cuts, helped cure what ailed us, Rove said bravely. They "have strengthened the economy, increased productivity and created new jobs."

That Rove needed to make this case in the first place tells you the trouble the administration faces. All the polls, which Rove played down but acknowledged reading avidly ("I love all these polls," he said before dismissing the idea of poll-driven policies), show large majorities disapproving of Bush's handling of the economy.

There is also a rather widespread sense that the economy did very well under Clinton -- better than under Bush -- and it's doubtful that getting voters to think about the Clinton days will do Republicans much good in November 2006.

Most astonishingly, Rove tried to make the case that Bush's tax cuts actually left the rich paying more. Everyone knows the Bush cuts in levies on dividen

Casey Wins Democratic Nod in Pa. Primary By PETER JACKSON, Associated Press Writer
Wed May 17, 1:48 AM ET

Political veteran Bob Casey, the heavy favorite, easily won the Democratic nomination in Pennsylvania on Tuesday to challenge conservative Republican Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) in the fall.

An effort by Pennsylvania voters to oust state lawmakers over a big pay raise cost at least 13 incumbents their jobs, including both of the Senate's top Republicans. The pay hikes were passed in the middle of the night last year, then repealed by legislators under public pressure.

In Oregon, Democratic Gov. Ted Kulongoski soundly defeated two rivals for the nomination for another term. An Iraq war veteran won the Democratic nomination for Congress in Pennsylvania, while another Iraq veteran was defeated in a congressional primary in Kentucky.

The 46-year-old Casey, son of the late Gov. Robert P. Casey, now serves as Pennsylvania treasurer. He was courted by national Democratic Party leaders to take on Santorum, the Senate's No. 3 Republican and a close ally of President Bush. The race could cost a combined $50 million.

Santorum, seeking a third term, was unopposed in the GOP primary.

Casey cruised past two political newcomers in the Democratic primary, Philadelphia pension lawyer Alan Sandals and Philadelphia college professor Chuck Pennacchio.

With 91 percent of precincts reporting, Casey had 587,622 votes, or 85 percent of the total.

Santorum renewed his challenge for Casey to engage in debates and taunted him in the opening moments of the general-election campaign.

"Come out from behind the name and stand before the voters of Pennsylvania and talk about the issues important to the people of this state," Santorum told supporters at his campaign headquarters just outside Pittsburgh.

Ridiculing Chavez - The Media Hit Their Stride, Part 1

By: Media Lens

Controlling what we think is not solely about controlling what we know - it is also about controlling who we respect and who we find ridiculous.

Thus we find that Western leaders are typically reported without adjectives preceding their names. George Bush is simply "US president George Bush". Condoleeza Rice is "the American secretary of state Condoleeza Rice". Tony Blair is just "the British prime minister".

The leader of Venezuela, by contrast, is "controversial left-wing president Hugo Chavez" for the main BBC TV news. (12:00, May 14, 2006). He is as an "extreme left-winger," while Bolivian president Evo Morales is "a radical socialist", according to Jonathan Charles on BBC Radio 4. (6 O'Clock News, May 12, 2006)

Imagine the BBC introducing the US leader as "controversial right-wing president George Bush", or as an "extreme right-winger". Is Bush - the man who illegally invaded Iraq on utterly fraudulent pretexts - +less+ controversial than Chavez? Is Bush less far to the right of the political spectrum than Chavez is to the left?

...

Before we know it, we find ourselves accepting the corporate media view as our own. If we see enough journalists smearing "maverick", "controversial", "left-wing", "Gorgeous George" Galloway, we will likely find ourselves responding: 'I can't stand that guy!' But how many of us will really know why, beyond feeling that there is 'something about him I don't like'? And how many of us will have reflected that, of all MPs, Galloway has at least been uniquely honest in his opposition to the Iraq war?

As for that other "maverick Chavez" (Sunday Times, February 19, 2006), the Financial Times noted that he was invited to London by Ken Livingstone: "London's maverick mayor." (David Lehmann, 'Why we should bother about Chavez and his politics,' May 15, 2006)

In Part 2 we will examine the realities of Western political, economic and military violence in Latin America - realities that are consistently ignored by the corpo

Domestic Spying: They're Not Getting Data, They're Getting the Switches
by emptywheel
Tue May 16, 2006 at 07:47:31 PM PDT

Steve Soto asks why all the Telecom companies are now (after a few days and, presumably, some heated meetings with their crisis communications firms) denying the allegations in the USAT article.

All three of the companies named in the USAT story have now in varying degrees denied
the central element of the story, which is that the three companies have cooperated and turned over to the NSA millions of phone records on domestic callers without any court order or legal authorization. So with the denials, all three companies are putting the credibility of their multi-billion dollar enterprises at risk if it is found that they are engaging in word parsing here and in fact did what the USAT said they did.

Which raises several questions:

1. Did the USAT get the story correct here, and are the companies parsing words to cover the fact that the NSA "took"
the information with the company's knowledge through its own equipment tapping into the company's switches, instead of the legally-problematic act of the companies "giving" the data to the feds?

2. Was the paper set up by leaks from "sources" aiming to discredit not only the paper, but to use the resulting flame-out to bury something worse and additional coverage of the matter?

Looking back at James Risen and Eric Lichtblau's Christmas Eve article (in which they snuck in some technical data while no one was looking), I think this is a case of parsing. But I think it's not a question of giving or taking the data (as Steve speculates) so much as giving the NSA access to the switches.

Here's a long passage from Risen and Lichtblau:

Several officials said that after President Bush's order authorizing the N.S.A. program, senior government officials arranged with officials of some of the nation's largest telecommunications companies to gain access to switches that act as gateways at the borders between the United States' communications networks and international networks. The identities of the corporations involved could not be

I'm alright Toni, thanks.

That's cool that your grandson eats breakfast...they say that kids do better in school if they eat first...What a nice grandma you are...:)

What stood out to me today on DN is a new documentary called "Baghdad ER"..The film makers spent a year in the ER, the main one in Iraq. I think they said it will be on HBO Sunday...not positive about that though...

This is the sort of stuff that should be on the evening sheeple news every night...showing what war really looks like...

On the lighter side...my god son who signed up for the Army was rejected....or kicked out or something...thankfully he didn't take his medication or something so he got into a fight during basic training I guess...so it's nice to know that they don't take anyone and everyone no matter what...Although for the military I would think fighting would be a positive for them in accepting someone..I guess not when you fight your own guys...

They want fighters, yes, but they want people who take orders, too. He probably bucked the orders given, so automatically out. Takes some a little while to realize that not all orders are good orders. And some busk the system form the beginning.

Back to Story - Help
Farm Aid Draws Protests From Bush, House By LIBBY QUAID, AP Food and Farm Writer
Wed May 17, 3:39 AM ET

Giving money to farmers, traditionally a popular election-year idea, is growing less popular in this election year.

The Senate wants to spend nearly $4 billion to help farmers cope with high fuel prices and damage from severe weather. House leaders object to the aid, saying Congress spends taxpayer dollars too freely, and President Bush is threatening to veto the aid.

The White House dislikes the farm aid because it raises the price of a spending bill for the Iraq war and hurricane recovery. Beyond that, the farm money wouldn't give energy relief to every farmer, said Bush's agriculture secretary, Mike Johanns.

Farmers who don't get subsidy checks — fruit and vegetable growers and many others — "would be absolutely cut out," he said.

"My goodness, can I say to these folks, that's fair; you should be satisfied with that?" Johanns told reporters last week in Chicago, where he was speaking to fruit and vegetable growers.

Johanns was talking about payments to help producers pay for fuel and fertilizer, costs that soared last year after Hurricane Katrina.

The energy-related payments, about $1.6 billion of the $4 billion in aid, would go only to those who get government subsidies.

That's four of every 10 farmers, according to the Agriculture Department. Subsidies go primarily to those who grow corn, wheat, rice, cotton and soybeans.

So while California has more than twice as many farms as North Dakota, California farmers would get less energy aid than North Dakota farmers, according to analysis by Environmental Working Group, one of many groups that criticize subsidy programs.

Miffed (and Fearful), Lobbyists Withhold Campaign Donations

Criminal probes, convictions, and halfhearted "reformist" posturing by members is having a chilling effect on the Washington status quo, Roll Call reports. Take, for example, the change of heart by former Rep. Mike Flanagan, now the head of his own lobby shop, Flanagan Consulting:

[Flanagan] said he's less likely to attend fundraisers now.
"You can't just call me bad names night and day and expect me to show up," he explained. "I'm also afraid. I don't need to be punished for my efforts to help good Members stay in office ... because the Congress is beginning to view activities like that in a bad light. We don't want to be viewed in a bad light."

Flanagan added that his firm has backed off from hosting events. Typically, he said, Flanagan Consulting would host about one fundraiser a month. "Now," he said, "we will only do a couple a year, and those are for personal friends of mine."

Maureen Dowd: From McBeal to McDreamy

I hope the N.S.A. isn't tapping my phone at The Times, or tracing my calls, or whatever it calls its maniacal military-industrial civil liberties transgressions.
I'm not worried that it'll overhear meaty — or fishy — exchanges with sources at the Bush White House. I don't have any sources at the Bush White House. If I'm talking container problems, it's ice cream, not ports. If I mention Scooter, I'm merely making plans for a Saturday Vespa picnic.

Alas, I fret that Gen. Michael Hayden and Crazy Dick Cheney will not hear anything to make all their illegal snooping and Caine Mutiny-style hunting for leakers worthwhile.

Just consider how my transcript from yesterday morning would read:

Me calling my colleague Julie: "Hey, the transmission went out on the TV at the hotel last night. Why on earth did Meredith sleep with Dr. McDreamy again?"

Julie hissed: "You witch! I was out and TiVo'd it. Now you ruined it!"

Just a couple of snarky, competitive, ambitious, complex, confused women obsessing about sex — exactly like the ones who have saved ABC after a decade in the gutter.......

Hume attacked Gallup poll showing majority disapproval of NSA call-tracking, ignored Newsweek poll with similar results

On Fox News' Special Report, host Brit Hume compared a recent USA Today/Gallup poll -- which found that a majority of respondents disapprove of the National Security Agency's (NSA) reported collection of Americans' telephone records -- with an earlier Washington Post/ABC News poll -- which found that 63 percent of respondents said the program was acceptable. Hume told viewers that "USA Today's poll question does not mention that the NSA database program does not involve listening to or recording telephone conversations, while the Post poll question did mention that." However, Hume did not mention that a Newsweek poll found that even after being told that the program does not involve "listen[ing] to calls," a majority of respondents said the program "goes too far." Media Hearing Yesterday in Libby Case
By Christy Hardin Smith @ 6:15 am

Let me start today by saying that, yes, it is possible that the grand jury could meet with Patrick Fitzgerald today because, as is true every Wednesday and Friday, the grand jury room is booked for the purposes of proceedings. It’s a regular grand jury, so they can meet with any US Attorney for proceedings in the district — they aren’t just reserved for Fitz. I’m keeping an ear to the ground and will certainly let everyone know the instant I hear any news – if I hear any at all. There’s no inside scoop on whether Fitz will be meeting with them today – that I know of, anyway, so we’ll all just have to be patient together. Hang in there — you’ll know as soon as we know anything. I promise.

And now onto the Libby case. Yesterday, Judge Walton heard the arguments from the various media attorneys and from Team Libby about what was or was not discoverable, relevant and necessary for Scooter’s defense from the various media outlets that Team Libby has subpoenaed. The hearing was about three hours long, according to the AP (via GuardianUK). News reports on the hearing have been sketchy, mainly concentrating on the La Diva Judy aspects of the arguments, which apparently took up quite a bit of the hearing, according to the WaPo:

Much of yesterday’s hearing concerned the notebooks of former New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who spoke three times with Libby about Wilson’s work in June and July 2003 and made repeated reference in her notes to Plame. Miller has said she also discussed Plame with other officials but could not recall their names. But she did not write an article about the matter.

The Times has provided Libby a redacted copy of the notebooks, but Jeffress argued that Libby needed to see other names and phone numbers in Miller’s notebooks to determine who else she spoke with about Plame and if her memory about all the related conversations was confused.

So much for that whole BFF aspens joined at the roots nonsense. Methinks Judy ought to begin contemplating a spray bottle of round-up. (Except our gal Judy has now turned up in the pages of the WSJ, doing an extended op-ed on t
