Basra carnage escalates as one person killed every hour
One person is being assassinated in Basra every hour, as order in Iraq\\\'s second city disintegrates, according to an Iraqi Defence Ministry official. And a quarter of all Iraqi children suffer from malnutrition, a survey of 20,000 households by the Iraqi government and Unicef says.
The number of violent killings in Basra is now at a level close to that of Baghdad, and marks the failure of the British Army\\\'s three-year attempt to quell violence there. Police no longer dare go to the site of a murder because they fear being attacked. The governor of Basra, Mohammed Misbahal-Wa\\\'ili, is trying to sack the city\\\'s police chief, claiming that the police have not carried out a single investigation into hundreds of recent assassinations.
The collapse of government authority in Iraq is increasing at every level and leaders in Baghdad have yet to form a cabinet, five months after parliamentary elections on 15 December. Insurgent attacks on American and British troops are also proving more lethal, with 44 US soldiers and seven British killed so far this month, and with daily losses exceeding anything seen for more than a year.

She's actually quite proud of it, and supposedly it has a cult following (although I can't imagine a very large one). But I've seen it, or part of it, and it seemed decidedly lame to me.

hello bloggers. I just received a call from some copany called Arbitron. They want to send me a booklet to record my radio listening habits for ratings. Did anyone ever hear of these guys? If they are legit, I'll definatelly fill in their books and send them back but otherwise, I won't bother...any thoughts?
Posted by: L1ssalaun at May 16, 2006 9:02 PM
The conservatives are not better, like Janeane says, these corporatist media outlets are lazy and they purvey lazy journalism and they say the people want this. It is a self fulfilling prophecy and they know it.
Posted by: 60th Street at May 16, 2006 08:56 PM
It's deeper than that. The media is so subtly yet firmly controlled by the elite corporatocracy that many of them don't even realize it. Here is a quote I've posted before, from Fritz Springmeier, but no one has said it better IMO:
I was visiting one day with a Christian minister and he was asking me what I did since I worked full time exposing the mind control and helping victims of mind control, and exposing the New World Order's agenda. I was honest with him, and told him that and in the course of doing that I mentioned something about the controlled media and boy he hit the roof. He went ballistic on me because just prior to becoming a minister he had been an ABC reporter. He said, "there is no control over the media! I was allowed to write and have any stories that I wanted!" I said, "whoa, slow down, let me ask you some questions." When you were hired, your superior hired you and kept you on because he liked the way you thought and the way you wrote ... and likewise his superior liked the way he thought and the way he wrote ... and on and on down the line. If anybody had written or thought in ways that weren't the approved ways of thinking and writing you would have gotten in trouble, wouldn't you. He said "yes." I said, that's it ... when I work with victims of mind control they can't see that they are under programming. As long as they do exactly what the programming asks them to do, they don't know that they are in programming. The only time that they know that there is any programming there is if they step out and act against it. If you are running with the wind behind your back or if you are in a stream and you are floating down the stream, you don't notice the current. But when you try to swim upstream is when you really notice the power of the current. So if you as a reporter step out of what their expectations are, that's when you get clobbered and you realize there is a lot of heavy force behind going against

GAO reports military unprepared for storm
WASHINGTON - The government won\'t be ready for another major disaster such as Hurricane Katrina unless the Pentagon takes a more aggressive role in the federal response, congressional investigators said Monday.
Poor planning and confusion about the military\'s role contributed to problems after the storm struck on Aug. 29, 2005, and without immediate attention improvement is unlikely, the Government Accountability Office said.
It urged the Defense Department to establish procedures to speed aircraft, troops and reconnaissance gear to hurricane-stricken areas when local and state officials are overwhelmed as well as beef up communications support to Homeland Security officials, who have the lead role in a disaster.
\"The devastation of Katrina and the issues it revealed serve as a warning that actions are needed,\" said the report by Congress\' investigative arm. \"Without urgent and detailed attention to improve planning, the military and federal government risk being unprepared.\"
\"No one had the total picture of the forces on the ground, the forces that were on the way, the missions that had been resourced, and the missions that still need to be completed,\" the GAO said. \"Substantial improvement will require sustained attention from the highest management levels in DoD, and across the government.\"

...that's when you get clobbered and you realize there is a lot of heavy force behind going against the direction the way they want to go in. He said, "you're right." I said if you had written an article that had been contrary to the way your boss thought, you would have been in trouble, wouldn't you? He said, "yes, you are right, I see your point."
That's my point. People don't notice the control until you start bucking against that control and then you are going to find out how much control there is over our entire society.

Certainly the media in the past was more liberal that it is now. However, there has never been a "liberal" media in America. In William Lederer's 1961 book Nation of Sheep he states the following:
"If a newsman writes that America is doing a find job overseas, he becomes the darling of the bureaucrats; he finds it easy to get space on free junkets. If he is critical, he generally is labeled as "irresponsible", or sometimes officials imply that perhaps he is un-American."

U.S. FEELS STING OF SOUTH KOREAN PROTEST
The police control the countryside, blocking off traffic, but the farmers cling to this enclave of sturdy brick homes in a standoff
\"It\'s up to the Korean police to get them out of there,\" grumbles an American officer, observing the standoff from the security of nearby Camp Humphreys, shielded by double rows of wire fencing. \"I can\'t see why they don\'t get them out of there.\"

Does anyone think FOX News has gotten more and more shrill as the Administrations thick, warm, toasty blanket of lies has become more threadbare and letting in the harsh and bitter winds of reailty and pure fucking hatred? Like some pregnant crabshack waitress on COPS answering the trailer door in dirty bunny slippers, a 'Porn Star' T-shirt and Tuesday panties (on Friday night) with a fat lip and a black eye, they just keep on denying it in spite of it all.
Like the latest talking point, 'phone records.' They're not recording domestic calls, they're only collecting phone RECORDS without a warrant. Ohh, see, I did not understand that. Well, that's an entirely different invasion of privacy, of course. Does anyone think they might well be stupid enough to accidentally admit they were a terrorist over a fucking PHONE?!! Because if they are, never mind explosives, they shouldn't be allowed to handle household chemicals.

This is a little blog compared to thousands of others. Ignore is a very effective tactic combined with manners, not calling other posters names and not believing that you are always right.

Good points! I fully agree. In that respect the media has always functioned on varying levels of fascism. But there are always do-gooders employed by the major news corps. out there who buck the system that needs bucking, keeping it real. Increasingly, the mentality of infotainment has produced empty-suited journalist/anchors. Meet the Press is a perfect example; a shell of what it used to be. Anchors are morons and more in touch with their celebrity-selves than their journalist selves. Consider Paula Zahn or Wolf Blitzer vs. Amy Goodman. That is a real journalist/anchor and she has to report from the periphery.

They are scared spitless of being tarred with the conspiracy theorist brush. Can't say as I blame her. Still, self censorship is censorship none the less.

hello bloggers. I just received a call from some copany called Arbitron. They want to send me a booklet to record my radio listening habits for ratings. Did anyone ever hear of these guys? If they are legit, I'll definatelly fill in their books and send them back but otherwise, I won't bother...any thoughts?
Posted by: L1ssalaun at May 16, 2006 09:02 PM
Say, how about scanning that booklet onto a website, post the URL, and we'll all download it, fill it out, and mail it in ALSO?
Posted by: Cathy in Seattle at May 16, 2006 9:24 PM
Let's face it, they all know the limits of the respective leashes that they are attached to.
Posted by: Rusty [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 16, 2006 09:19 PM

I would have to hear the conspiracy being stated where she clammed up, some are hard or impossible to substantiate. I would think that a good and credible reporter would have to clam up in that case.

This is a little blog compared to thousands of others. Ignore is a very effective tactic combined with manners, not calling other posters names and not believing that you are always right.
Backing off the extreme harsh attacking tones would be a wise move.

"You Write the Reviews: American Life"
by Elvis Costello
============================================================
Excerpts:
"Now here is Madeleine Albright, talking to Jon Stewart on The Daily Show.
She's being wonderfully indiscreet about a recent White House gathering of past Secretaries of State and Defence.
Apparently, Junior's response to this assembled resource of experience and differing perspectives was to stick his fingers in his ears and hum.
Two weeks ago, I was side-stage at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival...
A small plane flew over the festival site trailing a banner. It was greeted with cheers of approval from the citizens of that abandoned city. It said, "Impeach Bush".
Now here is Neil Young, singing a similar sentiment on Living with War."

Of course you\'ll have to point out to me the propoganda content in the following text as sampled from the \"offending article\"...
\"Throughout history, empires and their civilisations have come and gone. During the first part of the last century, the US quietly built its empire, first in the North and Central Americas and in South America. Soon after the Second World War, the US worked to maximise the advantages it gained, and the power it assumed, between 1943 and 1945, from its victory over Germany and Japan, and as a consequence of massive Soviet casualties, and large British debt and financial burden caused by the war. The USA assumed the leading role in the Western world by, on one hand, containing the Soviet Union and preventing the spread of communist revolution beyond the borders of the Soviet bloc; and on the other hand, ensuring uncontested American supremacy within the Western world.\"

Biggest crooks ever in the government and they want to throw more money at the boarder crooks and national guard that will never trickled down anyone.
Who's the money going to? NSA spy machine databases or what?
Show me the money.

Markos actually sounded masculine next to that guy.
Josh should have piped in.

Kathy, as we know, can get quite nasty with the celebrity stuff....she could have said much worse..."
Those celebs always deserve it. And some people think she's homophobic making fun of so many closet cases, when actually she just refuses to acknowledge the taboo about it, which is very pro-gay.

Everyone but you knows that the problem in this case is YOU.
It is your bad reaction that enables you to be the problem and the target. You even reply to anonymouses and your own posts. It is not wise of you to do that.
Posted by: Cinncinnatus at May 16, 2006 09:37 PM
ok cybill...nice try and all but you\'re not convincing me that my self defense once attacked is the problem...
btw I consider libelous charges like those contained in your posts offensive...please do reign yourself in.

YOU cybil Nobody are the problem when you lash out at every one that sees the target that you yourself painted on your dumb ass.
There isnt anything at all libelous in my posts. However there is a lot of libelous lies in your posts as you are very malicious. Those are very offensive to almost everyone. Please do reign yourself in.

Total of unfunded Liabilities \"staggering\"
The figures in the reports are so beyond everyday experience that few will grasp their meaning. The trustees tell a nation that lives month to month on just-in-time financing that program costs will exceed revenue in 2017, more than 132 payments from now. They also tell us the fabled Social Security trust fund will be exhausted in 2040. That may be a year earlier than last year\'s report, but face it: It\'s 34 television seasons from now. The numbers, page after page, are nearly inconceivable.

Wow, I didn't get Sammy Stem cell once I listened to the actual words coming out of his mouth. Look he's kindof homely looking too.
I guess I don't see those things when I love what he's saying. To me his voice inflection is firstly very Californian, and HONEST SOUNDING. Unpracticed, non-politician like sound.....
