~~~The statement by the official came after the White House had declined to confirm, for three days, Libby's grand jury testimony that he had been told by Cheney that Bush had authorized the disclosure.~~~
He's setting up Libby and maybe even Cheney to take the fall on this one so he can say he wasn't lying.
This is a joke, but not a funny one. Unbelievable how thiese people think. Pure evil!!
In Nepal, Death Toll Is 3 as Protests Continue
...
The protests this week, marking the 16-year anniversary of democracy in Nepal, are by far the most strident public demonstrations against the king, who seized absolute control of the government 14 months ago on the grounds that politicians had failed to stanch the debilitating Maoist rebellion.
About 13,000 Nepalis have died in the conflict between the rebels and the government. The conflict also has virtually halted economic growth in Nepal, much of which already suffers from dire poverty.
Could Australian workers follow the French lead? by Sue Bolton
...
Contrasting France and Australia
In France, the government has introduced a law affecting young workers. In Australia, a whole raft of anti-worker and anti-union laws have been introduced that affect every single worker.
In France, the student and union movements have responded with two months’ of mass mobilisations, causing a split in the French government over whether to compromise or tough-out the situation. In Australia, two nationwide actions have occurred in 16 months, with the next one not due until June 28.
In France, the union and student movements have set a deadline for the total withdrawal of the legislation, which has already been passed through parliament. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) secretary Greg Combet appears to be accepting that a future Labor government would not even restore all that the Howard government has taken away.
Lets Not Forget: Bush Planned Iraq 'Regime Change' Before Becoming President
By Neil Mackay
15 September 2002: A SECRET blueprint for US global domination reveals that President Bush and his cabinet were planning a premeditated attack on Iraq to secure 'regime change' even before he took power in January 2001.
The blueprint, uncovered by the Sunday Herald, for the creation of a 'global Pax Americana' was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice- president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy), George W Bush's younger brother Jeb and Lewis Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding America's Defences: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century, was written in September 2000 by the neo-conservative think-tank Project for the New American Century (PNAC).
The plan shows Bush's cabinet intended to take military control of the Gulf region whether or not Saddam Hussein was in power. It says: 'The United States has for decades sought to play a more permanent role in Gulf regional security. While the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of the regime of Saddam Hussein.'
The PNAC document supports a 'blueprint for maintaining global US pre-eminence, precluding the rise of a great power rival, and shaping the international security order in line with American principles and interests'.
This 'American grand strategy' must be advanced for 'as far into the future as possible', the report says. It also calls for the US to 'fight and decisively win multiple, simultaneous major theatre wars' as a 'core mission'.
The documents explicitly list the "U.S. Home Audience" as one of the targets of a broader propaganda campaign.
Monday, April 10, 2006; Page A01
The U.S. military is conducting a propaganda campaign to magnify the role of the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, according to internal military documents and officers familiar with the program. The effort has raised his profile in a way that some military intelligence officials believe may have overstated his importance and helped the Bush administration tie the war to the organization responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
The documents state that the U.S. campaign aims to turn Iraqis against Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian, by playing on their perceived dislike of foreigners. U.S. authorities claim some success with that effort, noting that some tribal Iraqi insurgents have attacked Zarqawi loyalists.
For the past two years, U.S. military leaders have been using Iraqi media and other outlets in Baghdad to publicize Zarqawi's role in the insurgency. The documents explicitly list the "U.S. Home Audience" as one of the targets of a broader propaganda campaign.
Remember, from the beginning we all believed (even the apolitical) that Cheney was really running the show (Thanks to SNL and all the late night comedians/talk show hosts).
And now, if he were to wage a war or even a terrorist attack against his own people ... the zeitgeist is such that people would only be that much more convinced that he has done all the bad things that have been alleged.
The man behind the mask:
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) June 17, 2004 -- Today Actor Joe Maggard(Matlock,Love Field,One Christmas) announced he filed a Lawsuit(Case No. 7:04-CV-117-FL(1)) against McDonald's Corp. and Leo Burnett Advertising in Federal Court in Raleigh NC on June 9th 2004. Mr. Maggard has alleged in his Complaint that McDonald's and Leo Burnett engaged in unethical business practices and fraud.
"I have bent over backwards to try and communicate with McDonald's in a positive way how very upset I am with way they have treated me for the last 10 years." Mr. Maggard said. "It's a shame because I grew up under the Golden Arches, then to play Ronald and have them treat me this way, maybe a Judge will help us sort out our disagreement."
Mr. Maggard alleges in his Lawsuit that McDonald's refused to provide a copy of his contract for 8 years. Also, McDonald's used coercion, threats and manipulation in dealing with his contract negotiations. "McDonald's used the very same tactics against Sandra Darling out in California, one of their own Franchisees. A jury found them guilty, I guess thats just the way McDonald's does business." Maggard said.
"I pray for Justice in this proverbial David vs McGoliath" Maggard said. "I served my Country overseas in the US Army, then came home and put on the badge of a Deputy Sheriff and served my community. I put my life on the line to protect the laws we live by, now I expect those very same laws to protect me."
McDonald's has demanded the return of Mr. Maggards Ronald McDonald Costume, he has refused saying, "Tell the McQueen Amy Murray at the Golden Palace in Oak Brook that she can kiss this Ronald's McGriddle!"
"I look forward to my day in Court" said Mr. Maggard. The case will be heard by the Honorable Louise Flanagan, US District Court Judge in the Eastern District of North Carolina.
"It all comes down to a lack of respect for anything or anyone by McDonald's and Leo Burnett, someone said they were just a conscienceless entity. Well this is one Ronald who is gonna stand his ground against the McBullies!" said Maggard as he polished his Big Red Magic Shoes.
In the realm of Public Perception... Yes he is done. He is not yet burning in hell, perhaps ... but I can't wait around for the video confirmation, much as I'd like to see it. It doesn't, however, mean that we let up on his sorry ass, but we can put some of the energy into bringing down some of the other sorry asses who supported his America-Hating ways.
The next step is too talk about changing this country to something everyone can be proud of (or at least proudER).
I think Feingold has some good ideas, whether or not he is ultimately an interim answer ... we can back him and push him even further.
Clean out as much riff-raff as we can in this year's elections and put the others on notice.
Ronald McDonald: Crimes Against Humanity
25 Apr 1977 McDonald's Corporation requests an injunction forbidding former Ronald and recently outed queer Bob Brandon from dressing as Ronald McDonald or implying in any way that the spokesclown is homosexual.
12 Aug 1988 Mac and Me released in theaters. This horrible, low-budget ripoff of E.T.: The Extraterrestrial was financed by McDonald's and the Coca-Cola Company. It also features Ronald McDonald as himself.
16 Jun 1991 A Ronald McDonald statue disappears from a McDonald's in Mesa, Arizona. The next day, an anonymous vegetarian phones The Arizona Republic to demand meatless sandwiches at the restaurant. The statue is later found burning in the desert by a sheriff's helicopter crew.
4 Mar 1998 Four men dressed like the Hamburglar steal a Ronald McDonald statue from a McDonald's in Saint-Jean-de-Vedas, France. They leave a message behind: Humanitarian intervention. Ronald McDonald rots away your guts and pollutes your head. React. Deliver the planet from this blight.
20 Sep 2001 A swastika appears on the forehead of the Ronald McDonald statue in front of the Ronald McDonald House in Tucson, Arizona.
2 May 2003 In San Jose, California, 4-year-old Joey Roberts wedges his head into the crotch of a life-sized Ronald McDonald statue. McDonald's employees finally release him after 35 minutes using a quantity of liquid soap.
Abraham Lincoln, the president you are so fond of calling yourselves the party of, said it best. “You can’t fool all of the people, all of the time.” And sadly for you, the time of reckoning is now. It was inevitable, and you should have seen it coming.
Whoever coined the phrase, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,” obviously never met a Republican voter living the nightmare you have created. A spurned woman’s wrath pales in comparison to the anger now being felt by those who believed your promises and your rhetoric, only to realize they have been betrayed.
And because – as you have never missed an opportunity to point out – you control the White House, the Congress and the Senate, there is no one else to pass the buck to, no one else to take the blame.
You broke it; you bought it. The disaster in Iraq, the desecration of our environment, the rising national debt, the faltering economy – all yours, every last bit of it. And all the spinmeisters in the world cannot untangle you from the noose you have so carefully, albeit inadvertently, placed around your own necks.
You promised your supporters protection. They’ve seen your response to Katrina. They now know you cannot keep them safe in the aftermath of a predictable natural disaster, no less a terrorist attack which, as you have unfailingly reminded them, is inevitable and will come without warning.
You assured your constituents that you were the party of fiscal responsibility. They’ve seen the national debt rise to unprecedented heights. They’ve seen their hard-earned tax dollars funneled into the coffers of Halliburton, the pockets of the wealthy, the accounts of the oil conglomerates. They’ve watched you debate million-dollar bridges-to-nowhere, while schools and hospitals struggle to keep financially afloat.
You promised your voters victory in Iraq, and triumph in the War on Terror. They’ve seen their soldiers come home with broken bodies and broken minds; they’ve seen the caskets you’ve tried so to hard to keep from view. They’ve seen the terror in the eyes of Iraqi children, and the suffering of the people you’ve allegedly liberated.
You held yourselves out to moral citizens as the guardians of family values. They’ve watched you gut social programs that feed hungry children and shelter the homeless, that offer assistance to the poorest among us. They’ve read about the raises you’ve voted for yourselves time and again, while they struggle to provide for their own families in the face of the rising prices and shrinking paycheques caused by the very policies you’ve endorsed.
You sold yourselves to your trusting followers with promises of bringing integrity and honesty back to Washington. They’ve seen the nightly news reports about how your political favours are available to the highest bidder. They’ve witnessed your fellow party members breaking the laws of our land for personal gain – or, worse yet, for political revenge. They’ve heard your president say that he is not accountable to them, nor to anyone, because he is above the very law he has sworn to protect.
Posted by: Catharine at April 10, 2006 12:05 AM
You identified yourselves to people-of-faith as good Christians. They’ve seen the photos from Abu Ghraib. They know that good Christians, nor anyone with an ounce of humanity, would never countenance such barbarity, no less condone it. Even the most hard-hearted of your supporters have been reduced to tears by what they have seen, and by what you have allowed our country to become.
If you look at your flagging poll numbers, and wonder where your supporters have gone, I can tell you where to find them.
They’re on the unemployment lines, thanks to your support of the outsourcing of their jobs. They’re in the waiting rooms of local free clinics with their sick children, because you have made health care insurance a luxury beyond their grasp. They’re busy trying to find prescription medicine for their elderly parents, because you have protected the profits of the pharmaceutical industry rather than protect our most vulnerable citizens.
Posted by: Catharine at April 10, 2006 12:06 AM
Some of them are homeless, because your policies have plunged them into poverty. Some of them are at funerals, burying sons and daughters who lost their lives fighting for what you call freedom in the Middle East; soldiers who died for lack of a few hundred dollars worth of body armour, while billions of dollars disappeared into the pockets of the war profiteers you handed no-bid contracts to with a wink and a knowing nod.
As the country goes to the polls this November, and again in 2008, you might wonder if your former party supporters will remember what you have done to them, to their lives, and to their once-proud nation. You might try to convince yourselves that all is not lost, there’s always the chance that you can still fool some of the people, some of the time.
Well, I wouldn’t count on it. You know what they say; an Elephant never forgets.
Hall of Shame Evil GOP Bastard of the Month:
Neo-Confederate Republican Senator (VA) and Presidential Hopeful (?) Sen. George Allen
The ugly secret of the GOP is that if you scratch the skin of a Republican you'll find an unrepentant racist lurking underneath. Allen, whose odd penchant for Confederate flags extends back to his privileged youth in California, was reportedly involved in an ugly racist incident there. A Confederate flag (and a hangman's noose) has adorned his office. Allen's judgement has shown no signs of improvement over the years. Today, Senator Allen is pushing to promote General Jerry "My God's Better Than Your God" Boykin to command US Special Forces. Could a theocratic "Seven Days in May" scenario be far behind? The truly amazing thing about Allen is that today's Republican Party is so intellectually bankrupt that this goober is considered a serious contender for his party's nomination for president.
The Top 10 Conservative Idiots, No. 240
You know it's a watershed week for conservative idiocy when The Hammer resigns in disgrace and doesn't make it to the top slot on the list. George W. Bush (1) has that dubious honor in the wake of his flat-out fraudulent claims of a desire to stop White House leaks, while Tom DeLay (2) crawls into second place, followed closely by his supporters (3) - or as I like to call them, "petty thugs." Elsewhere, Chris Matthews (5) sucks up, John McCain (6) just sucks, and the Grand Old Pedophiles (7,8) get two slots on the list this week. As usual, don't forget the key (and yes, I know, we still need to fix it).
I had always wanted my first feature film to be something different, off-center, original. We found all of the above and more with Super Size Me. It started off as such a fun experience, you can see the jubilation on my face on Day One, but as the days pass, the reality of what this food does to you really comes across on screen. The days couldn’t go by fast enough for me … I just wanted this experience to be over.
“You have to question whether it’s food or not. If you’ve got something that’s created in an assembly line somewhere hundreds of miles away, comes in on a truck, is thawed out and heated, and is adulterated with chemicals from some processing science company in New Jersey, I don’t know if that really is food.”
Col. Derek Harvey, who served as a military intelligence officer in Iraq and then was one of the top officers handling Iraq intelligence issues on the staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told an Army meeting at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., last summer.
In a transcript of the meeting, Harvey said, "Our own focus on Zarqawi has enlarged his caricature, if you will -- made him more important than he really is, in some ways."
---
The military's propaganda program largely has been aimed at Iraqis, but seems to have spilled over into the U.S. media. One briefing slide about U.S. "strategic communications" in Iraq, prepared for Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the top U.S. commander in Iraq, describes the "home audience" as one of six major targets of the American side of the war.
IHT: White House Letter: At the Easter egg roll, focus on a family issue
Next Monday, some 200 gay families are planning to attend the annual White House Easter Egg Roll to showcase themselves to the nation and President George W. Bush. But some religious conservatives say the families are "crashing" the public event and exploiting children for political ends.
"We're not protesting the president's policies on gay families," insisted Jennifer Chrisler, the executive director of the Family Pride Coalition, the organizer of the gay families attending the event. "We are, however, helping him understand that gay families exist in this country and deserve the rights and protections that all families need."
Not so, said Mark Tooley, the director of the United Methodist committee at the Institute on Religion and Democracy, an influential conservative group.
"It's facetious and not very persuasive for Family Pride to say they're not making a political statement," Tooley said in an interview last week. In the conservative Weekly Standard magazine in January, Tooley called the gay families crashers and surmised that President Rutherford B. Hayes, who held the first public White House Easter Egg roll in 1878, never would have imagined the controversy that the event was stirring up more than a century later....Laura Bush, has adopted a neutral position.
"All families are welcome to attend the Easter Egg Roll, provided they comply with the rules," Susan Whitson, Laura Bush's press secretary, said Friday. "No more than two adults per group, and at least one child under the age of 8."...
Jimmy, the company Bigfoot Industries builds Bigfoot RV fiberglass campers, trailers & motorhomes for cold weather use that have high R value polyurethane(R 8 per inch) for a 1.5" wall R value of 12. And that stays that way in very cold & in hot weather unlike fiberglass. Their 1.5" polystyrene walls are R8. Very well built units:
Jimmy, I think that Bigfoot spray injects their insulation in so they get complete & full coverage in their cavity. I think one can buy polyurethane in 4x8 sheets though.
Their units are expensive but they do have a lot of features. Good ones to study though.
Too bad that building a fiberglass mold is so expensive. It is really only practical for producing a lot of units.
TODAY'S SCNADAL FROM THE SCANDAL-A-DAY GOVERNMENT:
The U.S. military is conducting a propaganda campaign to magnify the role of the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, according to internal military documents and officers familiar with the program. The effort has raised his profile in a way that some military intelligence officials believe may have overstated his importance and helped the Bush administration tie the war to the organization responsible for the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
....The military's propaganda program largely has been aimed at Iraqis, but seems to have spilled over into the U.S. media. One briefing slide about U.S. "strategic communications" in Iraq, prepared for Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the top U.S. commander in Iraq, describes the "home audience" as one of six major targets of the American side of the war.
That slide, created by Casey's subordinates, does not specifically state that U.S. citizens were being targeted by the effort, but other sections of the briefings indicate that there were direct military efforts to use the U.S. media to affect views of the war. One slide in the same briefing, for example, noted that a "selective leak" about Zarqawi was made to Dexter Filkins, a New York Times reporter based in Baghdad. Filkins's resulting article, about a letter supposedly written by Zarqawi and boasting of suicide attacks in Iraq, ran on the Times front page on Feb. 9, 2004.
Lima - More than 15 million Peruvian voters will head to the ballot box on Sunday to choose a new president and parliament after a presidential campaign marked by hate and fear.
Opinion polls indicate a tight three-way race among the volatile authoritarian former soldier Ollanta Humala, who has no party apparatus behind him, the conservative Christian Democratic candidate Lourdes Flores and the traditional party Apra's candidate Alan Garcia.
That's a change from a week ago, when Humala led the polls.
To win the first round, a candidate needs 50 per cent plus one vote, but it's doubtful any of the three will reach that. The runoff between the top two candidates would take place on May 7.
In all, there are 20 candidates for president and 2,587 candidates for 120 seats in parliament.
Humala is an aggressive nationalist who blames Peru's white population for the country's poverty and is expected to get strong backing from Peru's poor, who make up more than 50 per cent of the population.
But Humala has never held office, has no party and is surrounded by a team of unknowns.
His opponents warn that a Humala victory would mean a dictatorship, social unrest and withdraw of foreign capital. Garcia's Apra Party is expected to emerge as the strongest party in parliament.
Humala's family have provoked worry around the country. His mother has said she would have homosexuals shot. His father wants to chase all whites out of the country and his brother, Antauro, who was incarcerated after a military rebellion that left five dead, wants to have departing President Alejandro Toledo and his wife executed.
Iraqis arrested by coalition forces have disappeared into a 'black hole' with no records of where they are being held, Tony Blair's personal envoy on human rights has warned.
Ann Clwyd said if the scandal of the missing prisoners had been taken more seriously from the start by the US, it could have helped prevent the abuse of detainees in their jails.
In an interview with The Observer, the Labour MP said she was 'very unhappy' at the rising numbers still detained - and called on the Iraqi government to publish a report on claims that inmates were tortured by Iraqi jailers.
Clwyd, appointed after decades of campaigning against Saddam Hussein's regime, reports directly to the Prime Minister and has until now rarely discussed her work.
Just gotta do some file naming....
Conbo... when my first son was little, we had these story books about dinosaurs we would read to him. They weren't humanized dinosaurs or anything, and even had the names of the real dinosaurs' names. It was just days in the lives of these dinosaurs... wonderfully written and illistrated. He loved them! We took him to Dinosaur State Park in Utah and the curator wanted to keep him! Jake, I think he was 5 or 6, knew all the names of the dinosaurs... even the obscure ones!
I'll try to find out what they were, exactly... those books.
he has a lot of dinosaur books. he names the dinosaurs like on the little foot movies:
flier, long foot, sharptooth, big horns
:) I have taken him to a dinosaur park here where they let you dig for fake bones. he liked that.
Utah is really close to where my grandparents live. I should take him to that museum when i go and vist the folks again.
All this was perfectly obvious to folks on this blog as long as this blog has been here. I mean.... "Al Qaeda In Iraq" is the name of Zarqawi's organization?
Why does that bother me?
Wal-Mart Banking Plan Draws Objectors By MARCY GORDON, AP Business Writer
Mon Apr 10, 2:25 AM ET
A parade of objectors spanning American business, unions and charities are going before federal regulators to make the case against allowing Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to expand its empire into banking.
The first-ever public hearings on a bank application by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. are drawing a wave of opposition to the move by the world's largest retailer. The company insists that consumers and retail banks have nothing to fear and is pledging to stay out of branch banking and consumer lending.
Some 300 institutions operate branches in 1,150 Wal-Mart stores and the company says it doesn't want to compete with them.
Opponents are not convinced. They portray Wal-Mart's proposed in-house bank — which would handle the 140 million credit, debit card and electronic check payments the company handles each year — as leading eventually to full-scale banking with retail branches that would destroy local banks.
Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart already is too big, they say, with 3,900 stores nearly saturating the U.S. market and unrivaled dominance — accounting for 10 percent of the U.S. retail economy, according to some researchers.
"Wal-Mart is a company that does not play by the rules," Robert E. McGarrah Jr., a corporate governance official with the AFL-CIO, said in a statement prepared for Monday's hearing.
"That factor alone makes its proposed bank a threat to the taxpayers and the nation's banking system. ... Wal-Mart's record in communities across America reveals a company that ruthlessly wipes out important community businesses," McGarrah said.
Mubarak Questions Loyalty of Iraq Shiites By SALAH NASRAWI, Associated Press Writer
Sun Apr 9, 10:36 PM ET
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak angered Iraqi leaders Sunday by saying Shiites there and across the Middle East are more loyal to Iran than to their own countries as he gave a startlingly frank warning about possible civil war in Iraq.
The flap highlights the escalating tensions between predominantly Sunni Arab countries — alarmed by possible Kurdish and Shiite domination of their neighbor — and Iraqis who say they are not getting enough support from their Arab brothers.
"Definitely Iran has influence on Shiites," Mubarak said in an interview broadcast Saturday evening by Al-Arabiya television. "Shiites are 65 percent of the Iraqis ... Most of the Shiites are loyal to Iran, and not to the countries they are living in."
He also said civil war "has almost started" in Iraq.
"At the moment, Iraq is almost close to destruction," he warned.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, said Mubarak's comments were not accurate.
"It is true that there are some kind of clashes among Sunnis and Shias. But it is not civil war," he told Britain's Channel 4 News.
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw reiterated that civil war in Iraq was neither imminent nor inevitable but accepted that the situation was "very serious."
Mubarak has rarely commented on the situation in Iraq and his statements usually are broad, vague expressions of concern over the violence and political turmoil there. Arab leaders also generally avoid pointed criticism of their fellow leaders.
So the interview startled not only Iraqis but also the Shiites who form large communities in a number of Mideast nations — particularly the Gulf, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. Some of them said Mubarak's comments only fuel momentum toward civil war.
Mubarak's spokesman, Suleiman Awad, tried Sunday to soften the impact. He said the president was talking about Shiite sympathy with Iran "in view of its hosting of (Shiite) holy shrines."
Some Worry 1st-Quarter Stock Rally Is Over By MICHAEL J. MARTINEZ, AP Business Writer
Sun Apr 9, 11:50 PM ET
Wall Street's first-quarter rally could already be fizzling.
On a technical basis, the major indexes last week failed to meaningfully break out of their recent trading ranges. Yes, the Nasdaq composite index reached consecutive five-year highs on Wednesday and Thursday — and then gave it all back and then some Friday.
For the market's number crunchers, such "technical resistance" is a bad omen. And while discerning trends solely through trading averages can be akin to reading tea leaves, the fact that the major indexes have retreated off these highs is never a good sign.
As a practical matter, there's really no reason for investors to push stocks substantially higher. Last month's Federal Reserve statement on the economy was clear — rates will continue to rise, at least for one more session, and for as long as the economy shows strength. And the economic data back up that notion, as the economy appears to be growing at a solid pace, with more people getting jobs and buying power.
Investors would like to see slow growth, so rates remain stable and companies can borrow money to expand without worrying about higher interest costs. Lower rates would be good for consumers, too, especially those with credit card debt and adjustable-rate mortgages.
And while earnings season — which starts this week — is customarily a boon to stocks, some analysts fear that bullish profit forecasts and outlooks issued last month have pushed investors to buy up the stock ahead of the actual reports, which means the stock prices we're seeing now already have positive earnings "baked in." That could result in modest selloffs even if earnings are good.
Oil Prices Rise Near $68 a Barrel By GEORGE JAHN, Associated Press Writer
9 minutes ago
Crude-oil prices rose Monday as market participants fretted over supply threats posed by Iran's nuclear standoff with the international community, violence in Nigeria and shrinking U.S. gasoline inventories.
Persistent chilly weather in parts of the United States also added to bullish sentiment.
Light, sweet crude for May delivery rose 37 cents to $67.76 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by midday in Europe. The contract fell 55 cents to settle at $67.39 a barrel on Friday.
May Brent crude on London's ICE electronic exchange rose 31 cents to $67.60 a barrel.
Gasoline futures rose nearly a penny to $1.9867 a gallon while heating oil was up slightly at $1.8854 a gallon. Natural gas futures fell just over 2 cents to $6.722 per 1,000 cubic feet.
The U.N. Security Council has demanded that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment program. But Iran has so far refused to halt its nuclear activity, saying the small-scale enrichment project is strictly for research and not for development of nuclear weapons.
U.S. administration officials have left open the possibility of a military response if Iran does not end its nuclear ambitions. Several reports published Sunday said the administration was studying options for military strikes.
Washington on Sunday sought to dampen the idea of a U.S. military strike on Iran, saying the United States is conducting "normal defense and intelligence planning" as President George W. Bush seeks a diplomatic solution to Tehran's suspected nuclear weapons program.
Bush critics alarmed over reports of possible strike on Iran 2 hours, 59 minutes ago
Critics of the George W. Bush administration expressed alarm about explosive new reports that the president is mulling military options to knock out Iran's nuclear program.
Retired General Anthony Zinni, the former head of US Central Command, told US television Sunday that he had no detailed knowledge of the alleged military plans, but he suggested a preemptive strike against Iran's nuclear program would be extremely risky.
"Any military plan involving Iran is going to be very difficult. We should not fool ourselves to think it will just be a strike and then it will be over," said Zinni.
"The Iranians will retaliate, and they have many possibilities in an area where there are many vulnerabilities, from our troop positions to the oil and gas in the region that can be interrupted, to attacks on Israel, to the conduct of terrorism," he said.
Zinni made his remarks after the publication of a pair of reports this weekend saying that the administration is seriously considering military action against Iran, amid a stalemate in diplomatic efforts.
The New Yorker magazine reported in its April 17 issue that the administration is planning a massive bombing campaign against Iran, including use of bunker-buster nuclear bombs to destroy a key suspected Iranian nuclear weapons facility.
The article by investigative journalist Seymour Hersh said that Bush and others in the White House have come to view Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a potential "Adolf Hitler."
"That's the name they're using," Hersh quoted a former senior intelligence official as saying.
Hersh told CNN's "Late Edition" show that a "messianic" president feels driven to try to contain Iran and that the White House is determined to keep open a nuclear option against strong objections from some top Pentagon officials.
"It's the fact that the White House wouldn't let it go that has got the JCS (Joint Chiefs of Staff) in an uproar," he said.
Posted by: toniD at April 10, 2006 7:12 AM
"He (Bush) thinks, as I wrote, that he's the only one now who will have the courage to do it," said Hersh, the reporter who also broke the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal.
Hersh reports in his article that the administration already has advance forces on the ground in Iran.
"I think it's fraught with danger. But they're there," he told CNN.
Saudis plan to fence off border with chaos
By Michael Theodoulou
SAUDI ARABIA has invited bids for the construction of a security fence along the entire length of its 900km (560mile) desert border with Iraq in a multimillion-pound project that will attract interest from British defence companies.
The barrier is part of a package to secure the Kingdom’s 6,500km of borders in an attempt to improve internal security and bolster its defences against external threats.
Saudi Arabia is concerned that the chaos in Iraq could cause an overspill of sectarian violence and terrorism. The kingdom claims to be winning the battle against al-Qaeda’s Saudi wing but wants to protect itself against Saudi insurgents returning from Iraq.
“There’s no suggestion that the border isn’t secure at the moment, so it could be a bit of an expensive white elephant,” a European diplomat in Riyadh said. Saudi militants join ing the insurgency use other routes, such as Syria.
Riyadh is worried by the rise to power in Iraq of the Shia majority, with its close links with Iran, which Saudi Arabia mistrusts. It is concerned that its Shia minority, which is concentrated in the oil-producing eastern province, may become radicalised
Tokyo stocks slip on concerns over US economy By David Turner in Tokyo
Mon Apr 10, 2:45 AM ET
Fears about the US economy and profit-taking pushed Japanese stocks down moderately on Monday.
The Nikkei 225 closed 0.6 per cent lower at 17,456.58, while the Topix fell 0.4 per cent to 1,777.34.
Concerns about further US interest rate rises hit export-focused stocks. The electrical machinery sector fell 0.4 per cent. Hitachi (NYSE:HIT - news), the electronics conglomerate, was down 1.1 per cent to Y876. Toshiba, one of its main rivals, also fell 1.1 per cent to Y747.
Domestic stocks were also hit by mild profit-taking after the Topix hit a 14-year closing high last week. Some banks and securities companies fell, though not uniformly so. Mitsubishi UFJ, the world's biggest bank by assets, slid 0.5 per cent to Y1,920,000. Daiwa, one of Japan's biggest securities houses, fell 1 per cent to Y1,599 despite its announcement on Friday of ambitious targets for profit growth in a three-year business plan.
The real estate sector fell more substantially, continuing the weakness of recent days. This suggested analysts have started to question the wisdom of the sector's strong rise in the wake of the recent national land price survey, which showed increases in some urban centres. Some analysts think real estate stocks have become dangerously overvalued, after doubling in value last year. Mitsui Fudosan, Japan's largest real estate company, was down 2 per cent to Y2,630. Mitsubishi Estate, its largest rival, fell 2 per cent to Y2,655.
The paper and pulp sector fell 1.4 per cent, hit by weak pulp prices. Oji Paper, one of the country's two largest paper makers, fell 2.6 per cent to Y717. Nippon Paper, its biggest rival, slid 1.3 per cent to Y513,000.
But Yoshinoya D&C, the restaurant chain specialising in beef dishes, rose 2.9 per cent to Y215,000 after raising its earnings forecast for 2006/07. The company cited its expectation that beef imports from the US would begin again in the second half of the fiscal year
John Gibson All right. Maryscott, let me put it this way. If the candidates you support were to win in September, and Democrats take over the House again, would I be correct in assuming you would want them and you could expect them to either censure or impeach George Bush?
Maryscott O'Connor: I would expect both parties to impeach George W. Bush, because it's a question of honor and principle.
Gibson interrupts, asking if she means Republicans too.
Maryscott O'Connor: Yes, absolutely! The Republicans were behind the push against Nixon. I *long* for the days of the Republicans in Nixon's era.
Chirac retreats on youth labor law - Law to be scrapped, PM de Villepin to stay
Bowing to pressure from students and unions, French President Jacques Chirac on Monday unveiled plans to scrap a controversial youth-labor contract that spawned weeks of strikes and led to a complete political stalemate.
The first-job contract, also known as CPE, will be replaced by an initiative focused on youths from troubled backgrounds.
"The president of the republic has decided to replace Article 8 of the law on equal opportunities with measures in favor of the professional insertion of young people in difficulty," a statement from Chirac's office said.
The move comes as a terrible blow to Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, who introduced the CPE and vowed to stand firm regardless of pressure from students and the unions.
The CPE would have made it easier for companies to hire and fire workers under 26.
It was introduced to tackle France's number one social problem: that one young person in five is unemployed.
Hannity, Just Answer the Question
by Rosemarie Jackowski
"History has shown that those who believe in a superior race do not often apologize for their atrocities."
The April 6th Hannity & Colmes program on FOX was announced as a debate between Ward Churchill and David Horowitz. According to the FOX News web site it was really a debate between Churchill and Horowitz and also Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes. Anyone who has studied the works of Churchill knows that he could take on a hundred Hannities so the fact that this debate placed Churchill against 3 opponents is not important. Nor is it important that no normal rules of debate or discourse were followed. I have never seen Hannity debate anyone. His normal method is to interrogate rather than converse with anyone that holds a view that is different from his. His style of interrogation is, in my opinion, designed to prevent any view other than his own from being expressed. He is a master of ad hominem attacks.
In the April 6th program a new low was reached. Hannity questioned the "soul" of Churchill. The implication of course was that anyone who does not agree with Hannity on the war must have a deficiency of their "soul". In spite of the Hannity tirade Churchill made some important points. Part of Churchill's argument was that the families of the dead Iraqi civilians should be shown some compassion. Churchill challenged Hannity with this point. The point that Churchill made is still hanging out in the airways and waiting for an answer from Hannity or anyone else at FOX. The quote below is taken from the FOX News web site.
"...CHURCHILL: Have I heard an apology from anyone offended with what it was that I had to say, which was to try to establish that a fundamental reality is they were no less valuable, no less human, no less immiserated than anyone on 9/11? The only real distinction in that regard is there's a whole lot more of them..."
Churchill was again making the sa
EU Pushes Sanctions, Not Nukes Against Iran
CBS News: World's Nuclear Arms
(AP) LUXEMBOURG A top European Union official said Monday that the 25-nation bloc should consider sanctions against Iran, including a visa ban on nuclear officials, because Tehran refuses to cooperate with the United Nations on its nuclear program.
"We have to begin thinking about that possibility," EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana told reporters outside an EU foreign ministers meeting.
The ministers debated if the EU should get tougher with Iran over its nuclear plan, which the West fears is geared toward building nuclear weapons.
Solana ruled out, however, that EU would back any military action.
"Any military action is definitely out of the question for us," he said.
Solana said that the EU would await Iran's response to a U.N. Security Council call for a halt to uranium enrichment before considering any actions. Iran has so far rejected international demands for clarity over its nuclear intentions.
An inquest into the death of a British activist shot while acting as a human shield in the Gaza Strip today heard how he had contemplated what it would be like to be hit by a bullet.
Tom Hurndall, 22, from north London was wearing an orange jacket to mark him out as a peace activist and had apparently been trying to move young Palestinian children from the line of fire when he was hit in the head. He died was left in a coma and died nine months later.
Mr Hurndall's mother, Joyce, wept as she described how her son had told her he wanted to "make a difference" just before he was wounded in April 2003.
“As difficult as this decision has been for me, it’s not going to be a great day for liberal Democrats, either,” Rep. Delay announced. “My loyalty to the Republican Party, indeed my love for the Republican Party, has played no small part in this decision.”
But what, exactly, has he accomplished? He was part of the Republican “revolution” that took over Congress after the 1994 election, proclaiming a “Contract With America” that promised smaller, more-responsive, more-accountable government. It was going to put an end to 40 years of Democratic dominance that had brought record budget deficits, new federal agencies and massive controls on the American people.
Instead, the GOP-led Congress has generated record deficits, including that for the budget for fiscal 2007 beginning Oct. 1, expected to approach $500 billion. The GOP-led Congress last month jacked up the national debt limit to $9 trillion — that’s with a “t.” That’s $30,000 of debt for every person in America.
Yet, last Sept. 13 Rep. DeLay had the gall to say, “Yes, after 11 years of Republican majority we’ve pared it [the federal budget] down pretty good.” When the Republicans took over Congress in 1994, the federal budget was “only” $1.46 trillion. For fiscal 2007, it’s expected to be about $2.8 trillion, or almost twice as much.
A court trial will determine his guilt or innocence on the corruption allegations. His legislative legacy of massive spending, debt and big government has already been determined.
White House: military response to Iran still possible
By NEDRA PICKLER Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - While stressing that diplomacy is the first course for dealing with Iran's nuclear ambitions, the White House is not ruling out a military response and says "normal defense and intelligence planning" is under way.
The White House, sensitive to President George W. Bush's image as a war hawk, is trying to play down the possibility of a military strike on the country that Bush included among nations forming the "axis of evil."
"The president's priority is to find a diplomatic solution to a problem the entire world recognizes," Bush counselor Dan Bartlett told The Associated Press on Sunday. "And those who are drawing broad, definitive conclusions based on normal defense and intelligence planning are ill-informed and are not knowledgeable of the administration's thinking on Iran."
Bush and other administration officials have said repeatedly that the military option is on the table. Several reports published over the weekend said the administration was studying options for military strikes, and an account in The New Yorker magazine raised the possibility of using nuclear bombs against Iran's underground nuclear sites.
Iran says to give "good news" on atomic progress
Mon Apr 10, 2006 2:49 PM BST
By Parinoosh Arami
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's president on Monday promised "good news" within days about the country's nuclear programme and a newspaper said he might declare the Islamic Republic had enriched uranium to a level used in power plants.
"I will give you, the Iranian nation, good nuclear news during the time I am in Mashhad," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in the northeastern city, where newspapers said he was expected to spend around five days.
His comments echoed remarks by other officials suggesting the imminent announcement of progress in Iran's nuclear programme, which the West fears is a cover to develop atomic weapons but which Iran insists is for civilian uses.
The daily Jomhuri-ye Eslami wrote: "It was said the good news is related to Iran's achievement of uranium enrichment at 3.5 percent and creating a laboratory platform that will register Iran in the club of nuclear fuel countries."
It gave no source or further details.
Cheney Once on Receiving End of Shotgun
- - - - - - - - - - - -
April 10,2006 | ALBUQUERQUE -- Years before Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a lawyer during a Texas quail hunt, Cheney himself was on the receiving end of an errant shotgun blast.
"We're probably the only twins in the United States that have shot the vice president and never have gone to jail," Forrest joked. The Albuquerque Journal reported the incident Sunday.
Cheney wasn't hurt but he was miffed, Forrest told the Journal.
"He said, 'You guys watch where you're shooting!' He was very offended," Forrest said.
The hunting group included the Forrest twins, Cheney and Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. They were hunting on a southern New Mexico ranch owned by the late Colin McMillan, an assistant secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush, Forrest said. He said the senator wasn't the shooter.
A spokesman for Domenici confirmed that the senator hunts with the Forrest brothers and has hunted with Cheney but declined further comment.
A message left Monday with Cheney's office seeking comment was not immediately returned to The Associated Press. The Journal said several phone calls to Cheney's office last week also were not returned.
Cheney, during a Feb. 11 hunting trip in Texas, Cheney accidentally peppered lawyer Harry Whittington in the torso, neck and face with up to 200 shotgun pellets.
Whittington sustained a mild heart attack caused by a pellet lodged near his heart three days after the shooting. He has since been released from a hospital. Kenedy County, Texas, Sheriff Ramon Salinas ruled the shooting an accident.
Third Retired General Wants Rumsfeld Out
By THOM SHANKER
Published: April 10, 2006
WASHINGTON, April 9 — The three-star Marine Corps general who was the military's top operations officer before the invasion of Iraq expressed regret, in an essay published Sunday, that he did not more energetically question those who had ordered the nation to war. He also urged active-duty officers to speak out now if they had doubts about the war.
The numbers for George W. Bush continue sliding into their long-awaited home and natural habitat -- the sewer. According to the latest AP-Ipsos poll, “Just 36 percent of the public approves of his job performance…. Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction…. Only 40 percent of the public approves of Bush’s performance on foreign policy and the war on terror [and] just 35 percent of the public approves of Bush’s handling of Iraq.”
Empirical Evidence Supports the Existence of Extra-Sensory Perception
By every normal, scientific standard, the case for the existence of a scientific anomaly called extra-sensory perception (ESP) – i.e., telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition; or, conversely, synchronicity – has been established. This simple fact was acknowledged 100 years ago in the annals of the Smithsonian Institute – based upon the careful case studies collected by psychical researchers in the nineteenth century. Since then, this basic finding has been reaffirmed in hundreds of properly designed and conducted scientific experiments. Meta-analyses of these experiments have further confirmed the basic finding – and replications are reported at regular scientific meetings.
This simple scientific finding has been subjected to more scrutiny and replication than almost any other finding concerning human mental capability. It has enormous implications for our philosophical understanding of mind, space and time. It is of interest to almost all people seeking knowledge of their own human potential. It is relevant to many other sciences and human disciplines.
Knowledge of Extra-Sensory Perception Research has been Systematically Suppressed
It is a simple fact that – in spite of enormous popular interest – no accredited colleges or universities in the United States, and very few elsewhere in the world, offer degree programs in "parapsychology" – the scientific study of extra-sensory perception. College courses on the subject are almost non-existent. And, extra-sensory perception research is almost entirely excluded from discussion within college courses in psychology, physics or philosophy. It is very rare for anyone receiving a college education to be exposed to the literature of extra-sensory perception research.
use the action of "dissolve", as in releasing, letting go, liberation, as applied to your power to communicate....
or something like that.....
"In psychology, physiology, and medicine,
wherever a debate between the mystics and the
scientifics has been once for all decided, it is
the mystics who have usually proved to be right
about the facts, while the scientifics had the
better of it in respect to the theories."
U.S. Military Secrets for Sale at Afghan Bazaar
By Paul Watson, Times Staff Writer
April 10, 2006
BAGRAM, Afghanistan — No more than 200 yards from the main gate of the sprawling U.S. base here, stolen computer drives containing classified military assessments of enemy targets, names of corrupt Afghan officials and descriptions of American defenses are on sale in the local bazaar.
Shop owners at the bazaar say Afghan cleaners, garbage collectors and other workers from the base arrive each day offering purloined goods, including knives, watches, refrigerators, packets of Viagra and flash memory drives taken from military laptops. The drives, smaller than a pack of chewing gum, are sold as used equipment.
Looks to me like you have a problem..
Bush is going to Our Beloved President of the United States for almost 3 more years..
Over that time, it looks like your only course of action is to repeat the fact the do not like him..
Then in 2008 you can choose between..
War Dog Hillary...
Or..
War Dog McCain..
While you are waiting you might want to check your copy of the Constitution and look for any references to poll numbers..
That will keep you busy for a while..
Christian Coalition Shrinks as Debt Grows
By Alan Cooperman and Thomas B. Edsall
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, April 10, 2006; A01
In an era when conservative Christians enjoy access and influence throughout the federal government, the organization that fueled their rise has fallen on hard times.
The once-mighty Christian Coalition, founded 17 years ago by the Rev. Pat Robertson as the political fundraising and lobbying engine of the Christian right, is more than $2 million in debt, beset by creditors' lawsuits and struggling to hold on to some of its state chapters.
In March, one of its most effective chapters, the Christian Coalition of Iowa, cut ties with the national organization and reincorporated itself as the Iowa Christian Alliance, saying it "found it impossible to continue to carry a name that in any way associated us with this national organization."
"The credibility is just not there like it once was," said Stephen L. Scheffler, president of the Iowa affiliate since 2000. "The budget has shrunk from $26 million to $1 million. There's a trail of debt. . . . We believe, our board believes, any Christian organization has an obligation to pay its debts in a timely fashion."
At its peak a decade ago, the Christian Coalition deployed a dozen lobbyists on Capitol Hill. Today, it has a single Washington employee who works out of his home. Its phone number with a 202 area code is automatically forwarded to a small office in Charleston, S.C.
The Christian Coalition is still routinely included in meetings with White House officials and conservative leaders, and is still a household name. But financial problems and a long battle over its tax status have sapped its strength, allowing it to be eclipsed by other Christian groups, such as the Family Research Council and the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Do you know what they say about opinions..??
And everyone has one..???
------------------------------------------------
Opinions have foundations. Some opinions have very solid foundations. Pentagon brass have solid foundations in matters of defense.
The terms "civilian policy" and "military planning" are bandied about as if they are two different animals. There was a time when military planning was strictly related to which beach to storm.
Today, military scenarios must take into account possible civilian policies both foreign and domestic. Not every policy can be seriously considered. Having fools at the domestic civilian helm is among them.
Your unwillingness to consider or accept the obvious ineptitude of the Bush administration is beyond my comprehension except for purposes of propaganda.
Rumsfeld and Cheney have a documented history of discarding any professional military advice that runs counter to their PNAC theories and their modern warfare theories. Their theories are tested with lives and the welfare of this country and others.
Years ago I read a quote from a General in the Pentagon. He said that the brass was very unhappy with Clinton's election to the presidency because he was believed to be a draft dodger and a Rhodes Scholar know-it-all.
Instead, the brass found him to be an indefatigable searcher of professional opinion who often knew the details of an issue as well as the interviewee. The General said that everyone learned to appreciate and respect Clinton's learning curve and his desire to hear every professional opinion.
The General stated that the opposite happened with the election of Bush. The Pentagon expected a pro-military administration to be a perfect match. Instead, Rumsfeld et al proved to be ignorant, obstinate pains-in-the-ass who respected no opinion other than those within their cabal.
