Maker of Chomsky Doc Among G-G Award-Winners

by Sarah Milroy

...

Two Quebeckers round out this year's awards list: -- filmmaker Peter Wintonick and textile artist Micheline Beauchemin, both respected pioneers in their fields. Wintonick, who lives and works in Montreal, is best known for his documentary Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media (1992), made with Mark Achbar and Francis Miquet, which has won 22 awards internationally and appeared in more than 50 film festivals around the world. Down the St. Lawrence from Montreal, Quebec textile artist Micheline Beauchemin lives and works at her retreat at Les Grondines. There, Beauchemin creates works on an intimate scale, but she has also tackled some monumental assignments, such as her design for the stage curtains at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and her commission for Montreal's Palais des Congrès.

The Governor-General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts will be presented on March 22 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. An exhibition of the winners' work runs March 24 through July 3 at the National Gallery of Canada.

...

Ecuador has a population of 13 million, one-third of them native, mainly Quichua speakers from the highlands. They were the backbone of a January 2000 uprising that forced former president Jamil Mahuad from power.

But the movement lost momentum after it threw its support in the 2002 elections behind former army colonel Lucio Gutierrez, who had joined the native revolt two years earlier.

The victorious Gutierrez appointed several native leaders to his cabinet but his alliance fell apart within eight months after he implemented austere, capitalist policies.

Congress voted to fire Gutierrez a year ago and appointed Palacio, the elected vice-president, to finish his term after Gutierrez disbanded the Supreme Court and declared a state of emergency, sparking street protests in Quito.

He was the third president forced from power since 1997.

The Big Lie

BAGHDAD — And no, I’m not talking about WMDs or anything like that. More in my quixotic feud with noted fiction writer Ralph Peters, who came here for a little while and declared All is Well, and “the media” are aiming to undermine the heroic mission here in Iraq with all that bad news. Why, he himself saw Iraqis cheering his patrol as he rumbled through Baghdad atop an up-armored humvee.

Let’s conduct a little thought experiment. “The media” here are fiercely competitive. Everyone of us is looking for any angle — any! — that will break news, make our stories stand out or otherwise distinguish ourselves. That’s what journalists do, and the corps here comes from the entire ideological spectrum, from the conservative to the socialist. But weirdly, this herd of cats — which is what we could be best be compared to — have all come to the same conclusion: Iraq is a mess.

I would argue that this prevailing view is the aggregate of a lot of professional reporting, mine but a small bit. If it gravitates toward a single viewpoint, well, that’s the way it is. Sorry, truth hurts. But a guy who writes exclusively for publications that supported the war before it went down comes here and says things are fine, and somehow I’m supposed to suddenly doubt my own observations and experience? Pardon me if I believe my lyin’ eyes instead of him... continued at:

There is a Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Festival in Auburn Indiana every year where they have a classic car parade, more than one concourse, special events and number of auctions. Of course the ACD museum there is open extra hours with special showings.

I got to ride in a restored Duesenberg there. That is one hell of a long car. A V12 engine I think. Talk about Power!
Vrooooooommmmmm.....

But for beauty those old Cords are something. A lot of old movie stars had them like Clark Gable and others. One of the star disc jockeys in the movie Sea Biscuit drove one.

Jim, the ACD museum in Auburn, Indiana is the old factory showroom of the old Auburn automobile company.

I would guess that sense Cords & Duesenbergs are so rare that maybe someone would be making replicas of them somewhere?

I met good actors, bad actors, actors in love with themselves, humble actors. But a wise one - never! I saw one wise actor in Bergman's 'Wild Strawberries.' But it turned out he was a director."

Did you ever see the confederate air force in action Jim?

They have the biggest collection of restored flying old warbirds. There is a lot of them flying every year at the worlds biggest air festival E.A.A. in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Actors may not be necessarily stupid, but I've noticed, when they're really smart, they have to know everything...they can't be spontaneous, they have to know the "motivation"....

Tarkovsky disliked working with Donatis on Solaris because of this....

And I don't think that I'll see her again,

But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

Tommy Franks thinks dead soldiers are a bore...

New York Times - Link

Determined to spur his ground war commanders to renew the push toward Baghdad, General Franks flew to General McKiernan's headquarters in Kuwait on March 31, [2003] where he delivered some harsh criticism. . . .

One of the most critical moments of the meeting came when General Franks indicated he did not want to be slowed by overly cautious generals concerned about holding casualties to a minimum, though no one had raised the issue of casualties. To dramatize his point, according to one participant, General Franks put his hand to his mouth and made a yawning motion.

To date, 2,313 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, along with 206 in the coalition forces, and perhaps as many as 37,754 Iraqis. But there's no official tally of that. "We don't do body counts," says Franks.

BOB HERBERT: STOP BUSH'S WAR

"By some estimates," according to a recent article in Foreign Affairs, "the number of Iraqis who have died as a result of the [U.S.] invasion has reached six figures — vastly more than have been killed by all international terrorists in all of history. Sanctions on Iraq probably were a necessary cause of death for an even greater number of Iraqis, most of them children."

Not everyone agrees that Iraqi deaths have reached six figures. President Bush gave an estimate of 30,000 not too long ago. That's probably low, but horrendous nevertheless.

In any event, there is broad agreement that the number of Iraqis slaughtered has reached into the tens of thousands. An ocean of blood has been shed in Mr. Bush's mindless war, and there is no end to this tragic flow in sight.

Jeffrey Gettleman of The Times gave us the following chilling paragraphs in Tuesday's paper:

Bush to Restate Terror Strategy

President Bush plans to issue a new national security strategy today reaffirming his doctrine of preemptive war against terrorists and hostile states with chemical, biological or nuclear weapons, despite the troubled experience in Iraq.

The long-overdue document, an articulation of U.S. strategic priorities that is required by law, lays out a robust view of America's power and an assertive view of its responsibility to bring change around the world. On topics including genocide, human trafficking and AIDS, the strategy describes itself as "idealistic about goals and realistic about means."

The strategy expands on the original security framework developed by the Bush administration in September 2002, before the invasion of Iraq. That strategy shifted U.S. foreign policy away from decades of deterrence and containment toward a more aggressive stance of attacking enemies before they attack the United States.

The preemption doctrine generated fierce debate at the time, and many critics believe the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq fatally undermined an essential assumption of the strategy -- that intelligence about an enemy's capabilities and intentions can be sufficient to justify preventive war.

In his revised version, Bush offers no second thoughts about the preemption policy, saying it "remains the same" and defending it as necessary for a country in the "early years of a long struggle" akin to the Cold War. In a nod to critics in Europe, the document places a greater emphasis on working with allies and declares diplomacy to be "our strong preference" in tackling the threat of weapons of mass destruction.

Colbert is a hoot as he assumes the right wing persona perfectly. He responded to Keith's characterization of O'Reilly as being a bully and picking on people shorter than him as follows:

Colbert: But aren't these people who are shorter than him-(O'Reilly) are also people who hate America?

It's cool to see Olbermann outside of his Countdown studio and being joined by Stephen Colbert who has quickly turned into must-see TV.

Neo Cons take on this Feingold thing .. not good.

Call for Censure Is Rallying Cry to Bush's Base

Republicans, worried that their conservative base lacks motivation to turn out for the fall elections, have found a new rallying cry in the dreams of liberals about censuring or impeaching President Bush.

The proposal this week by Senator Russell D. Feingold, Democrat of Wisconsin, to censure Mr. Bush over his domestic eavesdropping program cheered the left. But it also dovetailed with conservatives' plans to harness such attacks to their own ends.

With the Republican base demoralized by continued growth in government spending, undiminished violence in Iraq and intramural disputes over immigration, some conservative leaders had already begun rallying their supporters with speculation about a Democratic rebuke to the president even before Mr. Feingold made his proposal.

"Impeachment, coming your way if there are changes in who controls the House eight months from now," Paul Weyrich, a veteran conservative organizer, declared last month in an e-mail newsletter.

The threat of impeachment, Mr. Weyrich suggested, was one of the only factors that could inspire the Republican Party's demoralized base to go to the polls. With "impeachment on the horizon," he wrote, "maybe, just maybe, conservatives would not stay at home after all."

For weeks, Republicans have taken to conservative Web sites and talk radio shows to inveigh against the possibility, however remote, that Democrats could impeach Mr. Bush if they gained control of Congress. Mr. Feingold's censure proposal fell far short of a demand for impeachment. Most Democrats in the Senate distanced themselves from it, concerned that they would be tagged by Republicans as soft on terrorism. But the censure proposal provided Republicans an opening.

"This is such a gift," the conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh told listeners on his syndicated radio program on Monday, saying the Democrats were fulfilling his predictions. "They have to go back to this impeachmen

UN creates new rights body; US votes "no"
Wed Mar 15, 2006 12:07 PM ET

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The U.N. General Assembly voted on Wednesday to establish a new high-level human rights body but the United States was one of four countries to vote "no."

The new 47-nation U.N. Human Rights Council, approved by a vote of 170 to four with three abstentions, would replace the 53-country Geneva-based U.N. Human Rights Commission, which in recent years has included some of the world's most abysmal rights violators.

As the preeminent international rights watchdog, the new council will aim to expose human rights abusers and help nations draw up rights legislation. The United States says its rules are not strong enough to prevent violators from getting a seat.

Iran says ready to talk with Washington on Iraq
Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:14 AM ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran is willing to open a dialogue with the United States on Iraq, a senior official said on Thursday.

"We accept this proposal and we will appoint a negotiating team for talks soon," Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran Supreme National Security Council, told reporters in response to a call by Iraqi Shi'ite leader Abdul Aziz al-Hakim for Iran to start talks with Washington on Iraq.

Iranian officials had previously said Tehran was not interested in discussions before U.S. troops pulled out of Iraq.

Iran has repeatedly been accused by the United States of allowing weapons and insurgents to cross its borders into Iraq, which is gripped by sectarian violence that has raised fears of a civil war. Tehran denies the U.S. allegations.

Hakim, a leader in the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) who developed close ties with Iran when he opposed Saddam Hussein during years in exile there, called on Iran to open talks with the United States.

Iraq's PM says willing to quit if asked to
Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:21 AM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's Shi'ite Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari said on Thursday he was willing to withdraw his nomination for a second term if asked to step aside.

"If my people ask me to step aside I will do this," Jaafari, who is under increasing pressure from Sunnis, Kurds and secular leaders to step aside, told a news conference after Iraq's first session was convened in Baghdad.

Jaafari, who has been criticized for failing to curb violence, is also coming under mounting pressure from some of his partners in the ruling Shi'ite Alliance, the largest block in parliament, which nominated him in an internal ballot.

In his comments, Jaafari did not specify who he was referring to when he said "my people." In previous public comments, Jaafari has said he had no plans at all to resign.

Wrangling over the premiership has delayed the formation of a government of national unity seen as the best chance to avoid a civil war as sectarian violence has escalated.

Kurds destroy Halabja memorial in protest
Thu Mar 16, 2006 5:21 AM ET

HALABJA, Iraq (Reuters) - Hundreds of angry Kurdish protesters destroyed a memorial to the 1988 gas attack in the Iraqi town of Halabja on Thursday and set fire to the museum on the 18th anniversary of the deaths of 5,000 local people.

A local hospital doctor said one person was killed and eight wounded when Kurdish security forces opened fire after people angered by poor local services heckled Kurdish officials making speeches to commemorate the attack blamed on Saddam Hussein's forces.

Three local journalists working for Reuters said the one-storey museum had been destroyed by fire.

The violence erupted as Iraq's top Kurdish leaders sat in parliament in Baghdad as it convened for the first time since it was elected in December.

The Kurdish fury in Halabja could be embarrassing for Kurdish leaders, who have managed to keep the Kurdish north stable as sectarian violence has ripped apart Iraq.

US document hints at ‘confrontation’ with Iran

Washington, March 16: A new US national security strategy document warns of a possible ‘confrontation’ with Iran, if the 'diplomatic efforts' to pressurise Tehran to give up any aspirations of nuclear weapons fail.

"We may face no greater challenge from a single country than Iran. This diplomatic efforts must succeed if confrontation is to be avoided," the document was quoted as saying by The Washington Post today.

US President George W Bush plans to issue the document today which singles out seven countries as prime example of ‘despotic system’. These countries are North Korea, Iran, Syria, Cuba, Belarus, Burma and Zimbabwe.

The strategy, which reaffirms the doctrine of pre-emptive war against the threatening foreign states and terrorists, vows to take all ‘necessary measures’ to protect the US against these countries.

Britain, France urge quick action on Iran

NICK WADHAMS

Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS - Britain and France, two leading advocates for a tough U.N. Security Council statement on Iran's nuclear program, urged quick action Wednesday, though they still haven't bridged differences with Russia and China about the best way to address fears that Tehran may be seeking a nuclear bomb.

The latest meeting of the five veto-wielding members of the council yielded no major progress on the dispute between Britain, France and the United States on the one hand, and China and Russia on the other. Those two nations want to proceed far more cautiously.

While the five veto-wielding council members are united against Iran developing nuclear weapons, they disagree on how to get Tehran to comply with demands by the U.N. nuclear watchdog to stop all enrichment and reprocessing and answer questions about its nuclear program.

Uranium enrichment can be used either in the generation of electricity or to make nuclear weapons. Iran insists its program is to produce nuclear energy but the International Atomic Energy Agency has raised concerns that Tehran might be seeking nuclear arms.

Despite the disputes, Britain's U.N. Ambassador Emyr Jones-Parry said he hoped for a deal by sometime next week that could lead to council action.

"We are eager to see a clear statement by the council at the earliest date," he told reporters. "By this time next week I will be disappointed if we have not got something on the table of the council."

All 15 members of the Security Council planned a second round of informal consultations away from the council chamber on Thursday afternoon to discuss proposals that had been circulated Tuesday.

US Blocks Indigenous Bolivian Scholar From Entry

... U.S. government is blocking an indigenous Bolivian professor from entering the country to teach at the University of Nebraska for what it’s calling security reasons. The professor, Waskar Ari Chachaki, is a member of the Aymara indigenous people in Bolivia and is a leading authority on religious beliefs and political activism in Bolivia.

Dr Waskar Ari is an Aymara Indian from Bolivia who received his PhD from Georgetown University. He was recently offered a teaching position at the University of Nebraska, but his visa was denied because his name was “placed on a list of individuals under 'conspicuous revision’ — that is, he is being subjected to extensive background checks due to alleged security concerns”, reported the American Historical Association.

China military buildup concerns US, Iran "central banker of terrorism": Rice Thu Mar 16, 3:46 AM ET

The United States is concerned about China's military build-up and Beijing should make its intentions clear, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says.

Rice also said she was confident the United Nations would take appropriate action on Iran, which she called the "central banker of terrorism."

"I am quite certain that the Security Council will find an appropriate vehicle for expressing again to the Iranians the desire and indeed the demand of the international community that Iran return to negotiations," she said.

"Iran is a challenge because it is seeking to have a nuclear programme that would allow it to develop a nuclear weapon and it is doing that, we believe, under cover of the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty)," Rice said.

"And it's lied about its activities and therefore is in contradiction to its requirements or its obligations under the NPT.

"It also of course is involved as the sort of central banker of terrorism. So we have many reasons to be concerned about Iran."

Rice was speaking at a news conference here after meeting Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and ahead of a new trilateral security dialogue with Japan on Saturday, at which China's growing power is top of the agenda.

"We've said we have concerns about the Chinese military build-up. We've told the Chinese that they need to be transparent," she said.

"I heard there's going to be a 14 percent increase in the Chinese defence budget -- that's a lot -- and China should undertake to be transparent about what that means."

Rice's remarks come amid a renewed rise in tensions between China and Taiwan after Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian moved to suspend an advisory council set up to look at eventual reunification with the mainland.

Tehran willing to talk with US about Iraq 1 hour, 28 minutes ago

At loggerheads with the United States over its nuclear programme, Tehran said it was ready to negotiate with the "Great Satan" to help stabilise neighboring Iraq.

If US-Iranian negotiations were to occur, it would be their first direct talks since Washington broke ties with Tehran in April 1980 after the Islamic revolution that ousted the US-backed shah and the taking of US hostages.

Until now, the arch rivals have resisted a dialogue on Iraq, despite Iran's strong ties to the major Shiite parties who dominate Baghdad's political scene, and the growing violence that threatens to rip Iraq apart.

"We agree to negotiate with the Americans," the head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani told reporters after a closed-door speech to parliament.

The US administration of President George W. Bush has stepped up its accusations in recent days about Iranian "meddling" in Iraq, adding to the pressure over Tehran's disputed nuclear activities.

"Iran accepts the demand of (Iraqi Shiite leader Abdel Aziz) Hakim to resolve the Iraqi problems and issues with the goal of creating an independent (Iraqi) government," said Larijani, also Iran's nuclear chief.

Hakim, leader of one of Iraq's main Shiite parties, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), called on Wednesday for a dialogue between longtime foes Iran and America.

"We call on the wise leadership of the Islamic republic to open a dialogue with the United States and to discuss points of disagreement over Iraq," Hakim said.

US calls in more troops for Iraq

From correspondents in Washington

March 16, 2006

THE US is sending about 800 soldiers from a force held in reserve in Kuwait into Iraq to help provide extra security during a Shiite mourning ritual later this month, officials said today.

The soldiers come from a battalion of the 1st Armoured Division currently in Kuwait, said an army official.

The deployment in Iraq would be temporary and would not exceed "probably about 30 to 45 days".

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had said yesterday that ahead of the Shiite religious holiday Arbain, army General George Casey, the top US commander in Iraq, "may decide he wants to bulk up slightly" for the ceremony.

Shiites Muslims mark Arbain early next week, and the focus of the ceremonies is the Shiite holy city KArbala, 110km south-west of Baghdad.

President knowingly sign law that didn't pass?

RAW STORY
Published: Wednesday March 15, 2006

Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) has alleged in a letter to White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card that President Bush signed a version of the Budget Reconciliation Act that, in effect, did not pass the House of Representatives.

Further, Waxman says there is reason to believe that the Speaker of the House called President Bush before he signed the law, and alerted him that the version he was about to sign differed from the one that actually passed the House. If true, this would put the President in willful violation of the U.S. Constitution.

Bolton compares Iran threat to 9/11

The American ambassador to the United Nations has compared the threat from Iran's nuclear programmes to the September 11 attacks on the United States.

"Just like September 11, only with nuclear weapons this time, that's the threat. I think that is the threat," John Bolton told ABC News's Nightline programme on Wednesday.

"I think it's just facing reality. It's not a happy reality, but it's reality and if you don't deal with it, it will become even more unpleasant."

Bolton's comments came as the five veto-holding members of the UN Security Council failed again to reach agreement on how to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions after a fifth round of negotiations.

Iraq: The big lie

Bush and Rumsfeld robotically repeat their Iraq talking points, ignoring the fact that their ambassador and generals are contradicting them.

By Sidney Blumenthal

On the eve of the third anniversary -- March 20, 2003 -- of the invasion of Iraq President Bush began the fourth of his series of speeches in his second term attempting to articulate his strategy for the war. None of his previous explanations had succeeded in bolstering public confidence, so he tried again. His speech on Monday was a reiteration of the theme he had elaborated in his last round. Bush is rigidly adhering to the guidelines suggested by public opinion specialist Peter Feaver, a professor at Duke University recently hired to serve on the National Security Council. He has advised the president that he must insist that the difficulties in Iraq are the price we must pay for victory and that just as Bush stands for "victory" his critics by implication represent defeat. In his peroration, Bush reached for that last point, his high note, sounding the clarion bell of certainty that is most familiar and comfortable for him. "The battle lines in Iraq are clearly drawn for the world to see," he said, "and there is no middle ground."

Yet Bush's speech provided a text contradicting his own key officials. On the crucial issues of Iranian involvement in Iraq, the worthiness of Iraqi security forces, the democratic nature of the Iraqi government, the cause of human rights, U.S. intentions about staying or leaving, long-term strategy and even the origins of the war, the words of the president and his men clash. The president contradicts U.S. ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad, while the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace, and the U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. John Abizaid, contradict the president. At the same time, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld blithely contradicts the Joint Chiefs on the entire strategy.

Britain, France Urge Quick Action on Iran

By NICK WADHAMS
Associated Press Writer

The United States and its allies believe Security Council action will put pressure on Iran and could lead to tougher measures later on, such as sanctions.

France's U.N. Ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere said the council needs to "put its weight" behind the IAEA demand that Iran stop uranium enrichment. Such council action will help "show that the international community is serious," he said.

He also reiterated the French and British demand for a timetable that Iran would have to obey. British and French proposals have included a demand that IAEA chief Mohamed Elbaradei report back to it on Iran's progress, possibly within two weeks, but Russia and China have resisted.

De La Sabliere revealed a growing impatience with the slow progress in the council, which has made little headway toward action on Iran after a week of considering the issue.

"There is a little time to discuss, but not too much -- time is running out," de La Sabliere said. "What is happening on the ground in Iran is a reason for us to act swiftly."

US aims for 'regime change' in Iran

Tuesday March 14th 2006

Bush administration begins vigorous attempt to undermine country's ruling mullahs

Alec Russell

in Washington

THE Bush administration has started a new, more vigorous phase in trying to undermine the ruling mullahs of Iran after five years of indecision and internal disputes.

The phrase "regime change" is seen as too loaded to use in public but in effect that is what the administration is hoping to do, according to officials in Washington.

Buoyed up by achieving its initial goal of dragging Tehran before the United Nations Security Council, which is to debate Iran this week, officials are now promoting several measures reminiscent of the American approach towards Moscow in the Cold War.

Even as €70m is pumped into television and radio outlets to broadcast messages to the Iranian people, listening posts are to be opened in countries close to Iran to make up for America's lack of a diplomatic presence there.

At the same time, officials from the state department and the Pentagon, traditionally at loggerheads on Iran, appear to be sounding the same tune. Talk of "overtures" and "outreach to Teheran", the preferred approach of many in the state department in President George W Bush's first term, is over as Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, nudges the diplomats towards a more confrontational approach.

Rule change gives Hillary head start to White House

From Tom Baldwin in Washington

US DEMOCRATS are planning changes to presidential primary contests which would break up the New Hampshire and Iowa openers, and reduce the prospect of a left-wing, anti-war candidate defeating early frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

The proposals, which have been backed by the rule-makers on the Democratic National Committee (DNC), would allow more states to hold presidential nominations early in 2008, eroding the role played by the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.

These “first-in-the-nation” states have long since wielded political influence disproportionate to their population because of the importance attached by presidential hopefuls to doing well in the early contests.

But Iowa and New Hampshire are also overwhelmingly white and located far from the critical southern states which have turned their backs on the Democrats in recent years.

The rule changes, which are scheduled for final approval later this year, would allow up to four other states to hold ballots before the first Tuesday in February — the date traditionally enshrined as the cut-off point after which the nomination process outside New Hampshire and Iowa begins.

Hillary Clinton, War Goddess

She wants permanent bases in Iraq – and threatens war with Iran

I believe that we lost critical time in dealing with Iran because the White House chose to downplay the threats and to outsource the negotiations.

I don't believe you face threats like Iran or North Korea by outsourcing it to others and standing on the sidelines. But let's be clear about the threat we face now: A nuclear Iran is a danger to Israel, to its neighbors and beyond. The regime's pro-terrorist, anti-American and anti-Israel rhetoric only underscores the urgency of the threat it poses.

U.S. policy must be clear and unequivocal. We cannot and should not – must not – permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. In order to prevent that from occurring, we must have more support vigorously and publicly expressed by China and Russia, and we must move as quickly as feasible for sanctions in the United Nations.

And we cannot take any option off the table in sending a clear message to the current leadership of Iran – that they will not be permitted to acquire nuclear weapons."

Somehow, I don't often see MoveOn and McCain on the same side of the War on Terror. Murray does note in paragraph 17 that "The left wing of the party has greeted Feingold's censure call ecstatically," and notes he was the front-runner in a Jan. 31 poll of the "liberal blog Daily Kos."

Just "liberal"? Murray does the same thing earlier in the article, noting that "MoveOn.org and other liberal groups" called for a censure of Bush in 2004.

HA!...take that cons, WSJ praises Russ!!!!

Inside Politics By Greg Pierce

"Republicans are denouncing Sen. Russ Feingold's proposal to 'censure' President Bush for his warrantless wiretaps on al Qaeda, but we'd like to congratulate the Wisconsin Democrat on his candor. He's had the courage to put on the table what Democrats are all but certain to do if they win either the House or Senate in November," the Wall Street Journal said in an editorial.

"In fact, our guess is that censure would be the least of it. The real debate in Democratic circles would be whether to pass articles of impeachment. Whether such an inevitable attempt succeeds would depend on Mr. Bush's approval rating, and especially on whether Democrats could use their subpoena power as committee chairs to conjure up something they could flog to a receptive media as an 'impeachable' offense. But everyone should understand that censure and impeachment are important -- and so far the only -- parts of the left's agenda for the next Congress," the newspaper said.

The Journal added: "Not only do [Democrats] want to block his policies, they also plan to rebuke and embarrass him in front of the world and America's enemies. And they want to do so not because there is a smidgen of evidence that he's abused his office or lied under oath, but because they think he's been too energetic in using his powers to defend America. By all means, let's have this impeachment debate before the election, so voters can know what's really at stake."

Snooze Alarm

The side effects of Bush fatigue.

By Bruce Reed

Thursday, Mar. 16, 2006

43 Winks: Nobody ever promised them a Rose Garden, but for the Bush White House, it's been a tough year. The vice president shot a senior citizen. The domestic policy adviser faces up to 30 years on felony theft charges for applying Bush's economic policy at a box store. The White House pastry chef left after just 18 months to work for a more reputable outfit: a casino chain in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

Nervous Republicans, who thought nothing could be worse than 2005, are increasingly desperate for a White House shakeup in 2006. Sen. Norm Coleman threw down the gauntlet on Tuesday, accusing a White House that thinks about politics 24/seven of having a political "tin ear."

Bush aides offer a more sympathetic excuse: They're bushed. "We're all burned out," a White House official told Peter Baker of the Washington Post. "People are just tired." Chief of Staff Andrew Card sets the pace by waking up every morning at 4:20. If he got up any earlier, the president's approval might fall below 30 percent.

When Press Secretary Scott McClellan was asked whether the Bush team was tired, he reportedly "joked" that he was "tired of some of the questions." But according to Baker, the staff's condition is serious: "While there are few stories of aides nodding off in meetings, some duck outside during the day so the fresh air will wake them up." All this time we've worried about terrorists—and now we learn the nation has been taken over by zombies.

Then again, why is the Bush crowd so tired? In five years, they haven't done much. Cheney misfired on the last day of vacation. If the charges against him are true, Claude Allen spent more time in the Target parking lot over the past few months than my former White House colleague Gene Sperling spent outdoors in eight years.

The blond star of the film "The Dukes of Hazzard" still plans to visit Washington on Thursday to lobby members of Congress on behalf of Operation Smile, a non-profit venture offering free plastic surgery for disadvantaged children overseas with facial deformities.

People close to Simpson said she declined a request to appear that same evening at the gala fund-raiser of the National Republican Congressional Committee -- even after she was offered some private face time with Bush -- because Operation Smile is a non-partisan group.

"It just feels wrong," one Simpson insider told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that the actress keeps her political views private. "She would love to meet the president and talk about Operation Smile ... but she can't do it at a fund-raiser for the Republican Party."

NRCC spokesman Carl Forti said he was surprised at Simpson's position.

"It's never been a problem for Bono," he said, referring to the U2 rock star who has met regularly with political leaders of all stripes to promote various causes, including Third World debt relief. "I find it hard to believe she would pass up an opportunity to lobby the president on behalf of Operation Smile."

[]

Forti said the Republican group had even arranged for Simpson to dine at one of the head tables with U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican. Say what?

Ahhh, I see what you're looking at...the "approve" line, which BTW is within the margin-of-error for the low-30's.

Check out the "disapprove" line & the difference. That says that the electorate "disapproves" of Dear Leader 3:2.

I'm just listening to last night's show, and I heard, " . . . or any other program I may be hosting, hintee, hintee . . . " and I went straightaway to last night's Hour 3 for the buzz!!!

Any new theories developing today? I saw somebody thought he meant his sitcom, but . . . umm . . . I just don't see him having Ned Lamont on there. You?

Then I thouhgt, maybe he just meant subbing for others as he does so often, and so well, but . . . what would be hintee-hintee-ish about that?

We're pretty smart guys. We can figure this out.

HA-HA! Evil cons...Russ energizes the base!....uh.....the Republican base?!?!?!?

NY Times By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
WASHINGTON, March 15 — Republicans, worried that their conservative base lacks motivation to turn out for the fall elections, have found a new rallying cry in the dreams of liberals about censuring or impeaching President Bush.

"They have to go back to this impeachment thing," he said.

The Wall Street Journal's editorial board, a conservative standard-bearer, echoed t

Iraq chaos threatens troop withdrawal
By Paul Reynolds
World affairs correspondent, BBC News website

The chaos that has overtaken Iraq is now threatening hopes among the US and its allies that they might be able to start significant troop withdrawals in the coming months.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard has already publicly expressed his concern over the effect of increased sectarian tensions on embryonic troop withdrawal plans.

"There's no early prospect of all coalition forces being withdrawn, although until this latest event the signs were looking good," he told Australian radio.

The foreign forces are now in a predicament - their presence adds to the violence yet they are not withdrawn for fear that the violence might get worse. They are part of the problem and not enough of the answer....

I remember Sir Jeremy being quite optimistic when he was on the CPA. He used to talk about Iraq being "do-able". Now he is much more pessimistic.

"Without foreign help, Iraq would fall apart much more quickly," he said. "It is on the edge and we do not know if it is going to succeed."

I say "part of the problem" because the attack on the shrine indicates that something else is going on in Iraq beyond getting the troops out.

A Crazed Girl

*

That crazed girl improvising her music.

Her poetry, dancing upon the shore,

Her soul in division from itself

Climbing, falling She knew not where,

Hiding amid the cargo of a steamship,

Her knee-cap broken, that girl I declare

A beautiful lofty thing, or a thing

Heroically lost, heroically found.

No matter what disaster occurred

She stood in desperate music wound,

Wound, wound, and she made in her triumph

Where the bales and the baskets lay

No common intelligible sound

But sang, 'O sea-starved, hungry sea.'

Latin America Unchained

Mark Engler
March 16, 2006

For decades the International Monetary Fund (IMF) served as one of the key pillars of the "Washington Consensus." Dominated by the White House, the Fund allowed successive administrations to control the economic policy of poorer countries in this hemisphere and beyond. Those nations wishing to buck a U.S. agenda of corporate globalization risked having their access to international loans cut off. The brutish IMF not only handled its own funds but also played gatekeeper for money from other creditors, such as the regional development banks. This power made the institution as hated throughout the global South as it was celebrated inside the Beltway.

Maybe it's not surprising, then, that an increasingly progressive Latin America is starting to say good riddance.

In recent months, major countries in the region have moved to pay off their loans to the IMF ahead of schedule and free themselves of direct oversight from the Fund. Announcements in December from Argentina and Brazil, which are paying off $9.8 billion and $15.5 billion respectively, inaugurated the trend in the region. In addition, Bolivia was relieved of its outstanding obligations to the IMF by last year's debt relief agreement at the G8. The country's newly elected president, Evo Morales, has indicated that he may let his standby agreement with the IMF expire at the end of the month.

The motivation for cutting ties has been explicitly political. The Latin American electorate is fed up with policies like privatization and curtailed social spending; these policies, hallmarks of IMF "neoliberalism," have hit the countries' poor majorities hardest.

It would be one thing if the Fund's prescriptions worked in creating economies that served their people. But in country after country, neoliberal economic mandates have produced lackluster growth at best and often have resulted in catastrophe.

dieter is very well. Sleeping on my bed, even as we speak (write)

Took a while - but despite the fact I get up around 5:30 or so - Dietz doesn't really need to go outside until about 10am. Little dog tricked me there ;) [lotta frustrated wasted time outside lookin' at squirrels for a week or so]

There are several sites (espn, march-madnet, CBS sports) that encourage you (me) to take the entire field of 64 teams and predict who will win each game - all the way to the championship. It cost's nothing to play, is a lotta fun, and if you predict them all correctly (or at least the greatest percentage) these sites offer rewards of anywhere from 5 to 10 thousand dollars (some 2nd, 3rd, etc place prizes as well)

Ties are determined by "out of the hat" drawings.

Just good, clean fun...I've had many an addiction - thank god gambling was never one of em ;)

Anyone claiming that it is meaningless that the presidency and the administration and all of their policies are swirling down the toilet of public opinion is either blind, a fool or a propagandist.

If public opinion is meaningless, so is democracy.

And they want to do so not because there is a smidgen of evidence that he's abused his office or lied under oath, but because they think he's been too energetic in using his powers to defend America. By all means, let's have this impeachment debate before the election, so voters can know what's really at stake."

I realize the WSJ -- t/w/b the "W_Says_Journal" -- is a bastion of conservative/wingnut ideals...

...but, "not a smidgen of evidence."

Really? Then why are the wingnut congressional leaders spinning like Whirling Dervishes to stop any investigations which would prove there's "not a smidgen of evidence?" Hmmmm?

"Trust us," the wingnuts proclaim.

But, christ no, don't put that trust to the test by swearing anyone in, on the record, who might shed some light on whether or not the wingnut's are derserving of that trust.

I'm looking forward to a Merry Fitzmas this summer, replete with the neocon's bloody balls hanging from the tanenbaum. And Fitzie standin' there with a shit-eatin' grin on his face & tryin' to hide the scalpel in his hand.

WASHINGTON - The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll might sound like a broken record, but the tune grows louder as congressional midterm elections get closer and closer: President Bush is once again facing the lowest job approval rating of his presidency, the lowest percentage of Americans who believe the country is headed in the right direction, and an electorate that greatly prefers a Democratic-controlled Congress over a Republican-controlled one.

Yet the poll also shows something else that goes beyond the November midterm elections: A strong majority believes Bush is experiencing a long-term setback from which he’s unlikely to recover. “He’s losing his grip on governance,” says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican Bill McInturff. “It’s now a sense that we’ve seen the best that he’s going to produce as president of the United States.”

Largest Iraq Air Assault Since '03 Begins

AP Photo/KHALID MOHAMMED

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- The United States on Thursday launched what was termed the largest air assault since the U.S.-led invasion, targeting insurgent strongholds north of the capital, the military said.

The U.S. military said Iraqi troops also were involved in the operation aimed at clearing a "suspected insurgent operating area northeast of Samarra."

"More than 1,500 Iraqi and Coalition troops, over 200 tactical vehicles, and more than 50 aircraft participated in the operation," the military statement said.

Samarra is 60 miles north of Baghdad.

The military said the operation was expected to continue over several days against insurgent targets in Salahuddin province.

Libby's Lawyers Subpoena New York Times

- - - - - - - - - - - -

March 16,2006 | NEW YORK -- Lawyers for I. Lewis Libby Jr., the indicted former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, have subpoenaed The New York Times Co. and former Times reporter Judith Miller for documents concerning the disclosure of an undercover CIA agent's identity.

Libby was charged last fall with lying to investigators and a grand jury about leaking the status of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame to reporters. Miller spent 85 days in jail after refusing to tell a grand jury about conversations she had with Libby about Plame.

Miller later testified before the grand jury, saying Libby had given her permission to do so, and provided the panel with edited notes of her interviews with the former chief of staff.

She retired from the Times in November.

The Times reported Thursday that the new subpoenas seek Miller's notes and other materials, including any other documents concerning Plame prepared by Miller and Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof. It said other materials included drafts of a personal account by Miller published in the Times about her grand jury testimony, and documents concerning a recent Vanity Fair article and her interactions with a Times editor.

Plame's CIA identity was first published by columnist Robert Novak in July 2003, shortly after Plame's husband, former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson, accused the Bush administration of twisting prewar intelligence to exaggerate the Iraqi threat.

Wilson has said he believes his wife's identity was disclosed to undermine his credibility.

Libby lawyer William H. Jeffress Jr. would not tell the Times whether other reporters and news organizations had been subpoenaed.

Representatives for Matthew Cooper of Time magazine and Tim Russert of NBC News told the Times the men had received subpoenas.

A Times spokeswoman said the newspaper's lawyers were reviewing the subpoena. A lawyer for Miller, Robert S. Bennett, said she would likely fight her

Pew: 33%

As Duncan notes: "The single word most frequently associated with George W. Bush today is "incompetent,"and close behind are two other increasingly mentioned descriptors: "idiot" and "liar." All three are mentioned far more often today than a year ago." Do the Dems need anything else?"

Something else Bush and Jesus have in common...Jesus died at 33, too.

Impeachable Strategy

David Corn
March 15, 2006

David Corn writes The Loyal Opposition twice a month for TomPaine.com. Corn is also the Washington editor of The Nation and is the author of The Lies of George W. Bush: Mastering the Politics of Deception (Crown Publishers). Read his blog at http://www.davidcorn.com.

In 1868, the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Andrew Johnson. The president was a Democrat. The House was controlled by Republicans.

In 1974, the House judiciary committee voted to impeach President Richard Nixon. The president was a Republican. The House was controlled by Democrats.

In 1998, the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton. The president was a Democrat. The House was controlled by Republicans.

See a pattern here?

Yet, a band of left-of-center activists and a group of Democratic members of Congress are now calling for the impeachment of George W. Bush and acting as if this is a campaign that can actually succeed. A recent email from one pro-impeachment group declares, "Let's make impeachment our highest priority this spring—victory is possible!!" It scoffs at Democrats who dismiss impeachment as unrealistic and proclaims them the enemy.

There is nothing wrong with arguing that a president who overstated the case for war to whip up popular support, all for a misadventure that has led to the deaths of thousands, deserves the ultimate penalty. But neither is there anything wrong with recognizing political realities in assessing political strategies. Republicans don't impeach Republicans and Democrats don't impeach Democrats. So why waste time demanding that the Republicans politically assassinate the leader of their party?

Dean usually followed that up w/ his infamous rendition of "I left my MOON.....in San Fraannnn__cisssss__co!"

YeaH, L@L. Decided to rebuild mine. I need a hard drive and windows XP. I do some sork from home and I want to be able to reun MS Office. I don't know if Linux can do that. I already have that program. I have the box and everything else is in decent condition...so maybe for a couple hundred, I can salvage the old one.

There is nothing surprising about victorious Islamists who appeal to their constituents with a religio-nationalist message, any more than a victorious George Bush who makes similar successful appeals to his voters. The best response to the triumphant Islamists, whether you like or dislike them, is to understand the political, national and personal issues that have generated their victories and to address those real grievances, rather than to wander off into intellectual swamps and fantasylands.

That is some pretty insulting and insidious shit to be accusing the folks that hang here of being
pals with the insurgents, etc. Calling us lunatics is offensive enough, but saying we want to see civil war and more death is flat out disgusting! You are a filthy pig!
