When people decide they don't want to cooperate? They don't cooperate. I can't speak for them. A lot of people do not have those things now, a roof and/or food.

As far as an anarchist country...you will have to ask someone who knows more than me about that question. I don't know.

I do know that when Katrina happend, there was some self organization happening amongst some people.

Ok, I don't KNOW, I read.

Common Ground's mission is to provide short term relief for victims of hurricane disasters in the gulf coast region, and long term support in rebuilding the communities affected in the New Orleans area. Common Ground is a community-initiated volunteer organization offering assistance, mutual aid and support. The work gives hope to communities by working with them, providing for their immediate needs and emphasizes people working together to rebuild their lives in sustainable ways.

Common Ground started with 3 volunteers and $50 dollars. We have grown to over 40 fulltime organizers and hundreds of volunteers including health care workers, community organizers, skilled laborers, techies, legal and housing rights advocates, gardeners and more. In addition to the programs below we have built alliances with other relief and community organizations, developed a network of over 700 volunteers, secured over 150 bikes for area residents and volunteers, and produced a new promotional video called "Solidarity Not Charity."

Common Ground is in it for the long haul and we hope that you will join in efforts to ensure that historically neglected communities are able to come back together for a more just and sustainable future.

One more post before bed. Launch of We Believe! Ohio in the morning...

We are black and white. We are men and women. We come from a wide range of theological diversity as well. We are conservative, moderate, and liberal on the spectrum of faith and public policy! We serve urban, suburban, and rural people in our houses of worship. We hold in common a deep and abiding love of the God whom we serve.

We also share in common our strong belief that we must act and speak in public ways to support the poor, the children, and those who are voiceless and unrepresented in our times.

Here is the where and when of the launch event/press conference:
Tuesday, March 14, 2006
11:00 AM

The People's Free Space accepts and celebrates the uniqueness of all individuals and our right to be the authors of our own lives. We celebrate the differences between us that make our communities diverse and vibrant. The People's Free Space recognizes that institutional, economic, political, social and cultural hierarchies inhibit personal freedom and suppress the realization of individual uniqueness. These hierarchies are expressed in various interlocking systems of oppression-including, but not limited to white supremacy, partriarchy, heterosexism, ageism and capitalism-which together prevent equal access to the necessary resources for individuals, families and communities to meet their basic needs. Through non-partisan and non-commercial means, the People's Free Space actively and consciously works to identify and dismantle these hierarchies and systems of oppression within ourselves, our organization, our community and our world.

This page is a tribute to our amazing friend Meg Perry. She passed away on December 10th in a accident in New Orleans with the Frida Bus. For all who knew Meg, she was a blessing and an inspiration. Her boundless energy, love, enthusiasm, and passion touched us all immensely.

Meg Perry was an energetic, passionate, kind and dedicated person. She filled her days working for justice, building community and bringing love and joy into people’s lives. She was always ready with a warm smile or to lend a hand. Her contributions to the People’s Free Space were immeasurable, and her dedication to the Frida Bus was inspiring. She logged many hours designing, renovating and decorating the Frida Bus in an effort to create a beautiful, safe, educational space for her community. She organized and attended many Free Schools and put in many hours renovating the People’s Free Space this past summer. For her it was truly a labor of love.

Thanks.

"In England, there was scarcely an amount of order and protection to justify much national boasting. Daring burglaries by armed men, and highway robberies, took place in the capital itself every night; families were publicly cautioned not to go out of town without removing their furniture to upholsterers' warehouses for security; the highwayman in the dark was a City tradesman in the light, and, being recognised and challenged by his fellow-tradesman whom he stopped in his character of "the Captain," gallantly shot him through the head and rode away; the mail was waylaid by seven robbers, and the guard shot three dead, and then got shot dead himself by the other four, "in consequence of the failure of his ammunition:" after which the mail was robbed in peace; that magnificent potentate, the Lord Mayor of London, was made to stand and deliver on Turnham Green, by one highwayman, who despoiled the illustrious creature in sight of all his retinue; prisoners in London gaols fought battles with their turkeys, and the majesty of the law fired blunderbusses in among them, loaded with rounds of shot and ball; thieves snipped off diamond crosses from the necks of noble lords at Court drawing-rooms; musketeers went into St. Giles's, to search for contraband goods, and the mob fired on the musketeers, and the musketeers fir on the mob, and nobody thought any of these occurrences much out of the common way. In the midst of them, the hangman, ever busy and ever worse than useless, was in constant requisition; now, stringing up long rows of miscellaneous criminals; now, hanging a housebreaker on Saturday who had been taken on Tuesday; now, burning people in the hand at Newgate by the dozen, and now burning pamphlets at the door of Westminster Hall; to-day, taking the life of an atrocious murderer, and to-morrow of a wretched pilferer who had robbed a farmer's boy of sixpence." Charles Dickens - A Tale of Two Cities.

People could co-operate in fighting to dismantle the structures of centralized power. Instead of cops protecting world bank meetings, they could be on the same side as the rest of the working class.

Of course, I understand that this is just a wild anarchist idea, and everyday folks are afraid to dismantle the hierarchy, for fear of the loss of security.

When ono tries to make it sound like I'm some peacenik who doesn't understand human nature, that's just his issues showing. There are things to fight for. And I'm well aware that people can be very fucked up. Being an anarchist doesn't mean being some high-minded utopian idealist, just as much as it doesn't mean you're some radical getting ready to throw a bomb at a building.

But when ono says we need to fight for peace, I think that's stupid. We need to fight to decentralize power, and keep it that way. How can you fight for peace? That's just silly.

You don't have to look for it. It will find you.

You might want to take a look at those links.

They might give you a better idea about the crime situation in your neighborhood and the surrounding area.

One of those links also includes scanner frequencies. If your interested in getting a police/fire/ambulance radio scanner you can get a rechargable battery operated hand held scanner at radio shack for about 100 dollars. They are easy to use. You can listen to the calls your precinct gets as well as other precincts, the fire department and EMS get around the city. Most crimes and "events" are not reported in the news.

In a talk given in 1997, Chomsky ridiculed the concept of “anti-Americanism” as a symptom of totalitarian thinking. From my audio CD set...:

It’s the kind of term you only find in totalitarian societies, as far as I know. So like in the Soviet Union, anti-Sovietism was considered the gravest of all crimes. …

But try, say, publishing a book on anti-Italianism and see what happens on the streets on Rome or Milan, people won’t even bother laughing, it’s a ludicrous idea. The idea of Italianism or, you know, Norwayism or something like that would just be objects of ridicule in societies that have some kind of residue of a democratic culture inside people’s heads, I don’t mean in the formal systems. But in totalitarian societies it is used and as far as I know the United States is the only free society that has such a concept.

(St. Patricks Day?...)

You might want to look at the precinct map for your area and the surrounding areas. Then look at the stats. It might give you a better general idea as to what the deal is.

BTW: Getting a a scanner is not such a terrible idea either. Having and using one is really not such a big deal. Sometimes - when there's a developing situation - you can listen to it as it's happening. Sometimes you'll hear a contradiction in what's being reported in the news and what's actually happening. If your interested you can actually listen to the calls in your area and other areas. If you only want to listen to the police calls in your area you can easily program the frequency with a few strokes and listen. Every once in a while I turn it on. I got one after 9/11. Broadcast TV & radio was knocked out.

I am totally different when it comes to St. Patricks Day. Thousands of Irish lost their lives building New Orleans and they were the lowest rung on the latter even lower than blacks in many regards. It is the least I can do to get pissed to their honor.

HBO Content on iTunes
Authored by Aaron Freedman

March 13, 2006

Last night, fans of the HBO series The Sopranos rejoiced at the Season Premier for the acclaimed show. But today there's even more reason for excitement because HBO has begun to release content of its shows on iTunes. Right now you can get video interviews with the cast, behind-the-scenes footage, show summaries, and audio clips of the HBO shows The Sopranos, Big Love, Rome, and Entourage. Right now full episodes are not yet available on iTunes, though hopefully they will be in the future. I can only describe this deal in two simple words, "Bada-Bing."

An Englishman is an Irishman who can't write.

Posted by: Spike at March 14, 2006 1:35 AM

When I was 22 years of age, I had a girlfriend dump me because I wanted her to dress like a pirate.

"Why?", she asked.

"Because I've never fucked a pirate."

"And you never will!", she said, kicking me out of her apartment.

After she slammed the door in my face, I yelled back,

"Oh yes I will! As a matter of fact, from here on out, it's gonna be all pirates!"

Chicago has some unique architecture. Houses/buildings have semi-enclosed stairs behind them. They seem safer then NYC fire escapes.

I stayed near Loyola and in Downers Grove. As I recall Rush St. was the place to be on Saturday Night!

I remember driving through an area where there were a seemingly endless row of housing projects that went on for miles and miles. The buildings were gigantic and seemed to go on forever. We were driving for a while... about 1 and 1/2 hours. As I recall, while we were driving through the area, I was thinking to myself, there's nothing like this in NYC! I've never seen anything like it anywhere else or since. It was like a nightmarish prison city inside a city.

Peoria...big union town, kept sending Bob Michel back to Congress every 2 years....Republican...

He was one of the negotiators of NAFTA....but he was pro-life and hated gays....so Peoria probably didn't mind having their Congressman screw them out of their jobs....

Big Forest is a cool mellow guy and long time actor since he was young & skinny. I met him a couple of times

"Bird" was the breakthrough movie for him and a Independent style for Eastwood(a look time jazz fan).

Mel I'm not sure which movie that was. Is that the one with his friend in the ice cream truck?

He also was in a movie with Sharon Stone some time ago called "Diary Of A Hitman"

If you go to imdb.com & put in forrest whittaker you'll see his movies listed.

Iwakuni vote won't halt U.S. move: Abe

By REIJI YOSHIDA

Staff writer

The central government will go ahead with plans to move 57 U.S. carrier-based warplanes and support personnel to the U.S. Marine Corps Iwakuni Air Station in Yamaguchi Prefecture, despite the overwhelming opposition expressed in a nonbinding local plebiscite, Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said Monday.

You can right on your side and the law and be innnocent as a newborn baby, but if you go into court without a lawyer... you're getting the death penalty... believe that.

Everything else you can buy with money can be taken away from you at anytime unless the first thing you buy is a lawyer.

The proof is in the opposite (as always)...

You can be guilty as hell... smoking gun... signed confession... DNA evidence... witnesses with video cameras and if you have a team of high priced lawyers, there's a good chance you will get off scott-free.

A group consisting of 4 phenomenal artists of rap history, the Gravediggaz began as a rumble within the mind of Prince Paul, former producer of De La Soul. He wanted to bring together 3 men he knew could lyrically assault the minds of the mentally dead, digging graves for those who needed to be reborn. Enter Grym Reaper and Gatekeeper (Too Poetic of Brothers Grimm and Frutkwan of Stetsasonic) and the Rzarector (The RZA of Wu-Tang Clan). Along with The Undertaker a/k/a Dr. Strange (Prince Paul), they released 6 Feet Deep, one of the most slept upon albums in hip hop. There were many imitators, but none could come close. A new album, The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel, has been released at a time when many are stuck walking around living a mental death.

Baghdad Police Find 69 Bodies in 24 Hour By SAMEER N. YACOUB, Associated Press Writers
42 minutes ago

Police found at least 69 bodies killed by gunfire in Baghdad in the past 24 hours — a gruesome wave of apparent sectarian reprisal attacks in some of the capital's most dangerous neighborhoods, officials said Tuesday.

The bloodshed followed explosions in a teeming Shiite slum on Sunday in which 58 people died and more than 200 were wounded. The apparent retaliatory attacks marked the second wave of mass killings in Iraq since Feb. 22, when bombers destroyed an important Shiite Muslim shrine in Samarra, north of the capital.

An abandoned minibus containing 15 bodies was found Tuesday on the main road between two mostly Sunni neighborhoods in west Baghdad, not far from where another minibus containing 18 bodies was discovered last week, said Interior Ministry official Maj. Falah al-Mohammedawi.

Fourteen bodies — handcuffed and shot and dressed only in underwear — were discovered in southeast Baghdad, police Lt. Bilal Ali said.

At least 40 more bodies were discarded in various parts of Baghdad, including both Sunni and Shiite neighborhoods, said al-Mohammedawi, while three bodies with gunshot wounds were found in Mosul, said Dr. Baha-Aldin al-Bakri at Mosul's Jumhouri Hospital.

Those killed in Baghdad included a number of bodies recovered from Sadr City, where two car bombs and four mortar rounds shattered shops and market stalls at nightfall Sunday, as residents shopped for food for their evening meals.

What a hell hole Iraq must be!! What a mess this world is in!!

Engineers: 1985 Test Predicted Levee Break By JANET McCONNAUGHEY, Associated Press Writer
Mon Mar 13, 10:50 PM ET

Scientists working on an independent study of a floodwall that collapsed during Hurricane Katrina said Monday that a government test 21 years ago predicted the wall could fail.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' built a levee and floodwall system to test a design similar to the 17th Street Canal in 1985, which "indicated that failure was imminent," according to a statement from Raymond B. Seed and Robert G. Bea, in charge of the National Science Foundation's Independent Levee Investigation Team.

"Not only did they have that in their repertoire of information, they failed to use it, as best we can tell," Seed said in a telephone interview from the University of California, Berkeley.

Corps spokesman Wayne Stroupe said his agency knew about the 1985 test, and that he would forward the scientists' statement to a Corps official for a response.

Seed said that "sometimes there's separation between the engineers in the research center and the working Joes in some of the districts. It wasn't all that surprising. It was just disappointing."

On Friday, the Corps said the breach at the 17th Street Canal was the result of water working its way between the floodwall and the earthen levee into which it was set, and of soft subsurface clay.

Once the levee split, the force of the high water pushed the floodwall, and the half of the levee behind it, backward on the clay, the corps task force said.

Crude Oil Prices Fall but Gasoline Rises 1 hour, 32 minutes ago

Crude oil prices fell Tuesday, but refined products like gasoline and heating oil rose because of possible refinery problems in the United States.

Light, sweet crude for April delivery fell 17 cents to $61.60 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gasoline futures rose 1.92 cents to $1.7625 a gallon while heating oil gained half a cent to $1.7425 a gallon.

April Brent crude futures on the ICE Futures exchange in London fell 13 cents to US$62.07 a barrel.

Oil prices dropped after surging $1.81 to settle at $61.77 the previous day on nagging concerns about unrest in Nigeria and the possibility of U.N. sanctions against Iran, the No. 2 producer within OPEC, for its nuclear ambitions.

In Nigeria, recent attacks by militants on pipelines and oil facilities have left the country's production down by about 400,000 barrels a day.

"We would expect the potential for further chaos in Nigeria to provide a floor for prices around $60 a barrel, and we expect Nigeria will continue to be a major issue in terms of supply security up to, and probably beyond, next year's elections," wrote Barclays Capital's analysts, led by Kevin Norrish, in a research note.

U.S. oil products prices rose on talk of continuing restart problems at BP PLC's Carson, California, refinery and ongoing problems at Valero Energy Corp.'s Benicia refinery. This could prompt U.S.-based refiners to seek more gasoline from fellow refiners and probably increase purchasing from Northwest Europe.

Canandaigua is home to a large Veterans Affairs Medical Center, one that the city has fought hard to keep. As of Monday, the president's schedule did not include a stop there.

If she had the chance, Pat Yoak, who is also a waitress at Patty's Place, would ask Bush only one question.

"Why isn't he going to the V.A.?" she asked. "Hard-working Americans want to know."

Blair was warned of US strategy mess in Iraq: leaked memos Tue Mar 14, 2:00 AM ET

Top British officials warned Prime Minister Tony Blair that the US plan for postwar Iraq was a mess and outlined major blunders made once the coalition took control, leaked memos revealed.

John Sawers, Blair's envoy in Baghdad immediately after the March 2003 invasion, sent a series of confidential messages to London in May and June of that year, The Guardian newspaper reported, citing the memos themselves which were obtained by the co-author of a new book on the war.

Michael Gordon co-wrote "Cobra II: the Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq" with General Bernard Trainor. Extracts of the book have also been published in The Guardian.

In the memos, Sawers reportedly described the US postwar administration in Iraq, led by the retired general Jay Garner, as "an unbelievable mess".

He said: "Garner and his top team of 60-year-old retired generals" were "well meaning but out of their depth".

On May 11, 2003, just four days after arriving in Baghdad, the British diplomat sent a damning memo to Blair's key advisors titled: "Iraq: What's Going Wrong".

He wrote: "No leadership, no strategy, no coordination, no structure and inaccessible to ordinary Iraqis."

Sawers, who is now political director at the Foreign Office, said urgent action was needed by the United States, noting: "The clock is ticking."

Major General Albert Whitely, the most senior British officer with the US land forces, reinforced the grim message in a separate note weeks later that suggested the US-led coalition was in danger of failure.

"We may have been seduced into something we might be inclined to regret. Is strategic failure a possibility? The answer has to be 'yes'," he said.

Sawers and Whitely said a decision by Washington to cut troops after the invasion was one of the biggest blunders of the occupation.

What a lack of planning

Corpses spark fears of reprisal killings in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- At least 63 bodies have been found in Baghdad over the last day, authorities said, sparking fears that sectarian reprisal killings are continuing at a grisly pace.

Many of the victims were bound and strangled. Others suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

Fifteen bodies were found in the back of a pickup truck in western Baghdad Tuesday morning, authorities said. The victims -- males between the ages of 25 and 40 -- appeared to have been strangled.

Dozens of bodies found across Baghdad

Gruesome reprisals appear to intensify after particularly bloody weekend

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Police found at least 72 bodies in Baghdad in the past 24 hours, including 15 men bound and shot in an abandoned minibus, in a gruesome wave of apparent sectarian reprisal attacks, officials said Tuesday.

The timing of the killings appeared related to the car bomb and mortar attacks in the Shiite slum of Sadr City in east Baghdad on Sunday in which 58 people died and more than 200 were wounded.

Young Shiite nationalist leader Muqtada al-Sadr said Monday that Iraq is in a state of civil war. He responded to guerrilla provocations against Sadr City, with bombings and mortars having killed over 50 persons there Sunday, by ordering his Mahdi Militia not to engage in reprisals.

Like many Iraqi and Arab observers, Muqtada was shocked when US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said last week that the US military would not intervene in an Iraqi civil war, leaving that to Iraqi forces.

"May God damn you," Sadr said of Rumsfeld. "You said in the past that civil war would break out if you were to withdraw, and now you say that in case of civil war you won't interfere."

CHINA, RUSSIA BLOCKING U.S.
Tuesday, March 14, 2006 - FreeMarketNews.com

China and Russia are blocking agreement on a U.S.-backed statement by the United Nations Security Council that Iran must suspend uranium enrichment activities, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said.

Envoys from China, France, Russia, the U.K. and U.S., the council's five permanent members, ended a third round of talks today on a draft statement that also asks the UN's nuclear watchdog agency to report on Iran's response to the suspension demand.

Another meeting is scheduled for tomorrow in New York. ``We've been trying to get this issue into the Security Council for close to four years and other countries, including other permanent members, haven't had that view, so it's no surprise that different views remain,'' Bolton told reporters at the UN. U.K. Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry said Britain, France and the U.S. want a statement supporting the International Atomic Energy Agency's demand for greater cooperation by Iran, urging Iran to comply and seeking an IAEA report on the

Iran Vows to Resist UN Pressure Over Nukes
Tuesday March 14, 2006 6:28am

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's president vowed to resist pressure from the U.N. Security Council to back down in his country's confrontation with the West over its suspect nuclear program, declaring that "no power" can take away Iran's nuclear technology. The five veto-wielding members of the council - the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - have been weighing proposals to persuade Iran to resolve questions about its nuclear program. They were to resume their talks later Tuesday at the U.N. headquarters in New York.

"Rest assured that the technology to produce nuclear fuel today is in the hands of the youth of this land and no power can take it back from us," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in a speech attended by thousands in northern Iran. The crowd responded with chants of "nuclear energy is our right."

Russia to back diplomacy over Iran, continue talks
14:03 | 14/ 03/ 2006

TEHRAN, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia still supports a diplomatic solution to the crisis around Iran's controversial nuclear program and will continue talks with Iranian officials after a round of consultations in Moscow Tuesday, the country's top security body said.

The Security Council's press service said Russian negotiators had reiterated the country's position during Tuesday's talks, which it said would be continued.

"During the discussions, the Russian side reiterated its commitment to finding a negotiated solution to the issue with the use of the potential of the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency]," it said.

Meanwhile, Iran's official news agency, citing sources at the Iranian Embassy in Moscow, said the talks over Tehran's nuclear program ended without a breakthrough, but the sides had agreed to continue their consultations on the issue.

IRNA said the ongoing international standoff over Iran's nuclear program and a Russian offer to enrich Iranian uranium on Russian soil were high on the agenda, but reported no details. The enrichment initiative was widely seen as a compromise in the crisis when it was first floated, but Iranian officials initially said it was no longer being considered after the UN's nuclear watchdog decided to refer Iran's nuclear file to the UN Security Council.

U.S. Push for Democracy Could Backfire Inside Iran

By Karl Vick and David Finkel
Washington Post Foreign Service
Tuesday, March 14, 2006; A01

TEHRAN -- Prominent activists inside Iran say President Bush's plan to spend tens of millions of dollars to promote democracy here is the kind of help they don't need, warning that mere announcement of the U.S. program endangers human rights advocates by tainting them as American agents.

In a case that advocates fear is directly linked to Bush's announcement, the government has jailed two Iranians who traveled outside the country to attend what was billed as a series of workshops on human rights. Two others who attended were interrogated for three days.

The workshops, conducted by groups based in the United States, were held last April, but Iranian investigators did not summon the participants until last month, about the time the Bush administration announced plans to spend $85 million "to support the cause of freedom in Iran this year."

"We are under pressure here both from hard-liners in the judiciary and that stupid George Bush," human rights activist Emad Baghi said as he waited anxiously for his wife and daughter to emerge from interrogation last week. "When he says he wants to promote democracy in Iran, he gives money to these outside groups and we're in here suffering."

The fallout illustrates the steep challenge facing the Bush administration as it seeks to play a role in a country where American influence is called unwelcome even by many who share the goal of increasing democratic freedoms.

"Unfortunately, I've got to say it has a negative effect, not a positive one," said Abdolfattah Soltani, a human rights lawyer recently released from seven months in prison. After writing in a newspaper that his clients were beaten while in jail, Soltani was charged with offenses that included spying for the United States.

Russia Warns United States Against Iran Military Strike

Posted Feb 16, 2006, 3:49 PM ET

Russia's top military chief, General Yuri Baluyevsky, warned the United States against launching a military strike against Iran.

Russia's top military chief, General Yuri Baluyevsky, has warned the US against any military strike against Iran. Russia's top military chief made the warning today, while a top diplomat voiced hope that close cooperation with China could help resolve the Iranian nuclear crises.

With tension mounting over Iran's nuclear programs, Gen. Yuri Baluyevsky, the chief of Russia's general staff, warned the United States against attacking Iran.

He said that while Iran's military potential cannot compare to the United States', "it is hard to predict how the Muslim world will respond to the use of force against Iran."

"This may stir the whole world,

and it is crucial to prevent anything like that," Baluyevsky was quoted as saying.

Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alekseyev, meanwhile, said that cooperation with China could help push Iran toward accepting Moscow's offer to host Iran's uranium enrichment program.

~~~ As was put together for the first Gulf War
I know exactly what and who NATO is. I don't need a history lesson from you. George Bush doesn't run NATO. NATO will not become involved with Iran in any way. It's not going to happen. So your saying they will, is wrong. You're wrong.
If the Non-proliferation treaty still meant anything, they probably still wouldn't, but it doesn't.
India broke the rules of that treaty with George W. Bush's blessing. It's now meaningless.
NO ONE is going to do anything about Iran except, perhaps, the USA or Israel.
If you want to maintain we or Israel will, fine. But quit dragging the rest of the World into this, because they aren't coming.
Straw Poll Strategy
John McCain is changing his tactics for 2008. Inside a maverick’s campaign.
By Howard Fineman
Special to Newsweek
Updated: 8:20 p.m. ET March 13, 2006
March 13, 2006 - In a sense, Sen. John McCain’s campaign for the presidency in 2008 began with a personal, private phone call he made last week—to President George W. Bush.
A good source told me about it here the other day, in a quiet moment at the Southern Republicans’ conference at the Peabody Hotel, and McCain himself confirmed it at a reception hosted by Mississippi Republicans at one of the noisiest places in town, BB King’s restaurant.
Private though it was, the McCain call was emblematic of the ‘08 strategy that he and his circle have decided to pursue. They want to build out their campaign with members of the Bush circle, and base McCain’s pitch on the notion that he is the only sensible, electable and competent commander who can take control of the war on terror.
“Competence and electability,” that’s what we’re going to talk about,” said a key advisor. “If you support the president’s vision, John can carry it forward.”
During his failed 2004 Presidential bid, Sen. John Kerry called for providing Iran with the nuclear fuel it seeks, even as the Iran regime is believed to be only months away from developing nuclear weapons.
"I think the United States should have offered the opportunity to provide the nuclear fuel, test them, see whether or not they were actually looking for it for peaceful purposes," Kerry said during a critique of the Bush administration's handling of Tehran's nuclear program.
News Analysis: In Iran, conciliation falls by the wayside
PARIS After years of trying to prevent its nuclear program from being judged in the Security Council, Iran has decided to shift course and confront the United Nations head-on.
Tehran is gambling that the 15-member Council, which plans to take up Iran's nuclear dossier for the first time this week, will be too divided to inflict meaningful punishment.
Economic sanctions against Iran, the second- largest oil producer in OPEC, could send the price of oil soaring. Military force, for the time being at least, is seen as unlikely with U.S. troops stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan.
So Iran's leaders have abandoned a strategy of trying to woo the world and are now saying the Security Council process can take its course
The mammoth growth of government!
All of it. By definition, it's the fault of Republicans! It's not Kerry's fault for saying something over a year ago. You're dreaming.
And I wouldn't be so all-fired certain we will do anything against Iran! When?
Would Bush dare do anything without taking it before Congress? With what?
Bush screwed the CIA so badly on Iraq that he can't expect to send Cheney over there and get the same results. If Iran is 10 years from getting anywhere with nukes, that's what the CIA will say this time. Do you think Congress would sanction military action of any sort if Iran having nukes is 10 years out?
They don't have to. They just won't vote to permit Bush to do anything but thump his chest. They'll say: "Ten years? Talk to again in five!"
~~~ But they will vote to authorize a Blockade ~~~

You think Bush would limit his own authorization like that? And again, blockade who? It's not Iranian ships that load oil in Iranian ports. It's ships of a lot of different countries! A good percentage of those ships are Chinese!

So, you're not talking about blocking Iran. You're talking about blocking China! Japan!

Boliva: Idle Land to be Distributed to Poor Farmers

Land reform can be simple and nonviolent, such as shifting tax burdens away from workers and onto land speculators. Or more complex government-run land reform plans can be tried. Will Bolivia make smart choices?

Here is a recent news report. Although brief, it hints at big changes.

-

A call to return illegally owned lands was launched by Bolivia's President Evo Morales, while warning that his administration will put an end to unproductive large landed estates.

On his Tuesday statement after assigning Saul Salazar as new director of the Agrarian Reform Institute, Morales highlighted the importance of solving the country's land situation.

The Bolivian head of state said the new official is obliged to respect the Constitution, which says State land should have social and economic use and end unproductive large landed estates, especially in the country's eastern zone.

Morales called for those who have received large extensions of lands as political favors or other irregularities to hand over them to the State, in order to be distributed among poor farmers.

The Bolivian president warned that, if they do not do it voluntarily, the government will rigorously apply legal rules to recover those lands.

WBAL-AM To Drop Rush Limbaugh Show

POSTED: 7:12 am EST March 14, 2006
UPDATED: 8:35 am EST March 14, 2006

BALTIMORE -- WBAL-AM announced Monday that it is dropping "The Rush Limbaugh Show."

A revamped lineup dedicated to serving listeners with local news and discussion will not include the national talk show host after May 31, general manager Ed Kiernan and station manager Jeffrey Beauchamp announced in a letter to listeners posted on the station's Web site.

Sherman Oaks, Calif.,- based Premiere Radio Networks, the company that syndicates Limbaugh's show, said in a news release that it is "pursuing a developing opportunity" for the show in Baltimore.

The show, which has a national audience of 20 million listeners weekly, will be aired on a new station in June, Premiere spokeswoman Amir Forester in a telephone interview. She said the new home for the show will be announced soon.

WBAL commissioned research into what listeners want to hear and found that Marylanders liked the station's local personalities - Dave Durian, Chip Franklin and Ron Smith. It found that they want more localized programming with "more information and discussion about the events and issues impacting them."

WBAL now airs Limbaugh's show airs from noon until 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Starting in June, Franklin's morning talk show will expand into the afternoon hours with an larger cast, and Smith's show will start an hour earlier at 2 p.m.

The station plans to rededicate staff to local programming, expanding news and traffic coverage and offering news at the top and bottom of every hour.

Sharp rise in CO2 levels recorded
By David Shukman
BBC science correspondent

US climate scientists have recorded a significant rise in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, pushing it to a new record level.

BBC News has learned the latest data shows CO2 levels now stand at 381 parts per million (ppm) - 100ppm above the pre-industrial average.

The research indicates that 2005 saw one of the largest increases on record - a rise of 2.6ppm.

The figures are seen as a benchmark for climate scientists around the globe.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) has been analysing samples of air taken from all over the world, including America's Rocky Mountains.

The chief carbon dioxide analyst for Noaa says the latest data confirms a worrying trend that recent years have, on average, recorded double the rate of increase from just 30 years ago.

Iraqi Leaders Begin Meetings With U.S.

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA Associated Press Writer
© 2006 The Associated Press

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Leaders of Iraq's main political blocs began a round of marathon meetings Tuesday with the U.S. ambassador in an attempt to reach agreement on a broad-based government.

Adbul-Aziz al-Hakim, leader of the main Shiite bloc, hosted the meeting, which was also attended by Kurdish, Sunni and secular leaders.

Iraq has been headed by a caretaker government since Dec. 15 parliamentary elections, and officials fear the vacuum in authority has contributed to surges of sectarian killing.

The new parliament is scheduled to meet for the first time Thursday, setting in motion a 60-day deadline for the legislature to elect a new president, approve the nomination of a prime minister and sign off on his Cabinet.

Leaders of the main ethnic and religious blocs, however, have been unable to agree on key issues, including how many positions various groups will have in the government, who will fill key posts and the government's program of action.

Venezuela is no threat

...

I'm not an apologist for Hugo Chávez, but one should be open-minded to any attempt to lift people out of poverty. Venezuela has a long and rich history, and the people's struggle for peace and freedom should be encouraged. As the Rutland Herald editorial on Feb.27 points out, "In relying on the Human Rights Watch report to criticize Chávez, Shepard has pointed out the duplicity of U.S. foreign policy." Self-serving political slander by Shepard and Republican Sen. Wendy Wilton is unjustified. In fact it is a disservice to humanity.

Where the Sidewalk Ends

*

There is a place where the sidewalk ends

And before the street begins,

And there the grass grows soft and white,

And there the sun burns crimson bright,

And there the moon-bird rests from his flight

To cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows
black

And the dark street winds and bends.

Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow

We shall walk with a walk that is measured and
slow,

And watch where the chalk-white arrows go

To the place where the sidewalk ends.

Yes we'll walk with a walk that is measured and
slow,

And we'll go where the chalk-white arrows go,

For the children, they mark, and the children, they know

The place where the sidewalk ends.

Poor Senator Nancy Jacobs, you almost have to feel sorry for her, made the mistake of blurting out this priceless gem to Raskin:

Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?

Well the good professor had a mouthful to say about that:

Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You didn't place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.

I cannot listen to the last movement of the Mahler Ninth without the door-smashing intrusion of a huge new thought: death everywhere, the dying of everything, the end of humanity...All through the last notes my mind swarms with images of a world in which the thermonuclear bombs have begun to explode, in New York and San Francisco, in Moscow and Leningrad, in Paris, in Paris, in Paris.

This is a bad enough thing for the people in my generation. We can put up with it, I suppose, since we must. We are moving along anyway, like it or not.

What I cannot imagine, what I cannot put up with, the thought that keeps grinding its way into my mind, making the Mahler into a hideous noise close to killing me, is what it would be like to be young. How do the young stand it? How can they keep their sanity? If I were very young, sixteen or seventeen years old, I think I would begin, perhaps very slowly and imperceptibly, to go crazy.

..."Do you know what an indigo child is?" a man onscreen asked a group of firefighters. None of them had a clue. On came the doctors in white lab coats, the Chinese scientists, the clairvoyants, the wild-haired psychics and the bearded New Age gurus. These people were experts on the subject.

"We're watching humans evolve," explained one. "Just like we've evolved to now we have an opposable thumb, we're witnessing the human species evolve into a telepathic creature."

All over the world, these experts explained, a new breed of children is emerging who can read minds, predict the future and bend silverware through sheer brainpower. These kids, called indigo children, are surrounded by a blue aura, hence the name, and believed by some to be reincarnated beings. Disruptive, impatient and easily bored, indigos are commonly diagnosed with attention deficit disorder and then medicated until they stop seeing angels. If they are nurtured correctly, however, they will save the world.

"They are our future," said another expert, a clairvoyant named Phil Gruber. "And they are here to simply usher in a new golden age where love will triumph."

Iran resumes nuclear talks with Russia but still defiant Tue Mar 14, 6:37 AM ET

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defended his country's controversial nuclear program in the face of heightened US pressure ahead of an expected UN Security Council showdown.

But Iran also announced it had resumed negotiations with Russia on a compromise proposal aimed at resolving the long-running crisis over its nuclear work, which the United States claims is a cover for a weapons program.

"Bear in mind that this government, which is the government of the people, will continue its path with glory, power and wisdom until it achieves all its rights," Ahmadinejad told Iranians in the northern province of Golestan in a speech broadcast live on television.

"And on this path, retreating by even an iota is meaningless," he said amid chants of "Death to America" by the crowd.

"We had the revolution in order not to listen... So I'm telling you (Westerners), be angry at the Iranian people and you will die of this anger," he added.

His comments came a day after Iran's archfoe the United States renewed economic sanctions first imposed in 1995, as US President George W. Bush piled on the pressure ahead of the Security Council meeting expected this week.

Bush also Monday accused Iran of helping Shiite militias in neighboring Iraq to build roadside bombs.

Envoys of Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States -- the five veto-wielding, permanent members of the council -- met Monday in New York and were expected to hold more talks Tuesday.

US quietly tightens access to classified information

John Byrne and Larisa Alexandrovna
Published: Tuesday March 14, 2006

National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley quietly revised the guidelines for determining access to classified government information last year, increasing emphasis on allegiance to the United States and allowing the government broader latitude in rejecting candidates without a clearly articulated cause, RAW STORY has found.

In a December 2005 revision of the “Adjudicative Guidelines for Determining Eligibility for Access to Classified Information,” Hadley made semantic but substantial changes which seem to mirror a broader shift in Bush Administration policy. The document, found online, shows numerous variations from a previous copy of the guidelines published in 1997. Both are linked at the bottom of this article.

Many of the changes were minor or involved updates to catch up with technological advances. For example, the guidelines expand on certain areas with regard to storing or transferring classified information in electronic form.

But taken in sum, the changes seem to indicate an increased emphasis on eliminating leaks of classified information, and a stronger emphasis on loyalty to the United States and its agents. The changes also allow those determining whether an individual is granted a security clearance to rely on a conflation of various “suspect” factors rather than a clear violation of a single rule.

THE HAT SQUAD: MAUREEN STAPLETON
Maureen Stapleton, who created a gallery of pugnacious, sometimes profane but always vulnerable heroines on Broadway, in films and on television and who won an Academy Award for her fiery performance as the anarchist Emma Goldman in "Reds," died yesterday at her home in Lenox, Mass. She was 80.

Ms. Stapleton had one of the most honored acting careers of her generation. Her Academy Award for "Reds," Warren Beatty's 1981 epic about the Russian Revolution, came on her fourth Oscar nomination. She also won two Tony Awards and an Emmy among many nominations.

I wanted to comment on this statement that was made by a moron and agreed to by an idiot.

A capitalist who continually produces inferior goods and services. vis a vis fucks people over, will soon be out of business, as someone will come along and do a better job.

As far as the basis of capitalism being to fuck people over, that's simply not the case. Here's an example:

DooDOO and Infant-at-Large want access to the internet. Verizon or whomever will provide them that access for a monthly fee.

Those two dopes get what they want and Verizon gets what it wants. Who exactly is getting fucked?

I don't expect either of these two assclowns to admit that I've made a point here, as they need the lies of socialism, and in DooDoos case, anarchry as a scapegoat for their own woeful inadequecies.

I think you missed the point, or you would have asked, Who exactly is getting fucked OVER.

The answer is, people without money are getting fucked over.
