Religious freedom Afghan-style is no freedom - The trial of a Christian convert undermines the US democracy agenda.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0324/p09s01-coop.html

WASHINGTON – Efforts by the US soldiers deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom to help the Afghan people throw off the oppressive Taliban government appear not to be complete. A 41-year-old Afghan man, Abdul Rahman, is being tried for converting to Christianity 16 years ago. If found guilty by the Afghan court he faces the death penalty. The judge in the case, Ansarullah Mawlazezadah, has commented to ABC News, "We will ask [Rahman] if he has changed his mind about being a Christian. If he has, we will forgive him, because Islam is a religion of tolerance."

Conservatives will never succeed in distancing their failed ideology from Bush. His biography blends all the threads of modern conservatism that is really a marriage of corporate interests and theocracy. He's a mediocre man born into wealth, who never had to prove himself in a meritocracy and found religion. Through the network of his family name Bush became President and launched a war that appealed to corporatists and theocrats alike. How much more conservative can one be?

Conservatives like to portray their ideology as a celebration of self-made men with optimism. In reality though, the poster boy for conservatism is not Ronald Reagan. It's George W. Bush, a man with wealth he didn't earn honestly who believes the apocalypse is just around the corner.

A no-bid contract to a Chinese company? There wasn't one American company qualified to do this? Is this how they're gonna get Chinese compliance on Iran? If so they're bigger suckers than even I previously thought.

U.S. Hiring Chinese Co. to Scan Nukes

The administration acknowledges the no-bid contract with Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. represents the first time a foreign company will be involved in running a sophisticated U.S. radiation detector at an overseas port without American customs agents present.
"Li Ka-Shing is pretty close to a lot of senior leaders of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party," said Larry M. Wortzel, head of a U.S. government commission that studies China security and economic issues. But Wortzel said Hutchison operates independently from Beijing, and he described Li as "a very legitimate international businessman."

One can conceive legitimate security concerns and would hope either the Security Department or the intelligence services of the United States work very hard to satisfy those concerns," Wortzel said.

I asked him after the speech if he had heard Richard Belzer was planning on reviving the National Lampoon Radio Hour, and that I thought it might be a good fit on a new liberal network. "whole plan is to have permanent military bases in Iraq"

yubb!

"Dick and George didn't want more oil from Iraq, they wanted less.

I know some of you, no matter what I write, insist that our President and his Veep are on the hunt for more crude so you can cheaply fill your family Hummer; that somehow, these two oil-patch babies are concerned that the price of gas in the USA is bumping up to $3 a gallon.

Not so, gentle souls.

Three bucks a gallon in the States (and a quid a litre in Britain) means colossal profits for Big Oil, and that makes Dick's ticker go pitty-pat with joy.

The top oily-gopolists, the five largest oil companies, pulled in $113 billion in profit in 2005 -- compared to a piddly $34 billion in 2002 before Operation Iraqi Liberation. In other words, it's been a good war for Big Oil.

As per Plan Bush, Bahr Al-Ulum became Iraq's occupation oil minister; the conquered nation "enhanced its relationship with OPEC;" and the price of oil, from Clinton peace-time to Bush war-time, shot up 317%.

In other words, on the third anniversary of invasion, we can say the attack and occupation is, indeed, a Mission Accomplished.

However, it wasn't America's mission, nor the Iraqis'. It was a Mission Accomplished for OPEC and Big Oil.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Troubled spirits come to Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood once a week to seek solace and advice from a man who by day works as a Wall Street bond salesman.

Each Monday a group of about 16 members of the Spiritists Group of New York meet in a building normally used for dance and acting rehearsals to discuss personal problems and work on their spiritual energy. Then they talk with tormented spirits to help them, in what organizers call charity work.

Joao, a Brazilian who asked his last name not be used to keep his Wall Street work and personal life separate, is a counselor at the Spiritist group in Manhattan.

"We ask that the spiritual benefactors be with us," Joao says, invoking the spirits. Almost immediately a middle-aged Brazilian man talks in a voice the group believe is a human spirit speaking from the afterlife.

"Why do I find myself in this miserable situation? Where are the angels and the heavenly music?" he asks, agitated.

Joao tells him, "My friend, we are here and we will help you. Your suffering will end soon."

Sobbing, the man raises his voice: "Why do they call me horrible names? I never killed anybody and they call me killer! Where is God? Where is the light that was promised to me?"

The man is calmed by Joao, who tells him not be afraid. For the next hour, others speak in the voices of troubled spirits.

Others hold pens, their eyes closed, and write in the dark, channeling messages from wiser spirits. "Do not be afraid to give testimony to help others on their path to spirituality," a woman named Jussara reads from one such message.

Joao said that by talking to troubled spirits, "We learn -- just like the way a psychiatrist learns from his patient's problems. And we are also preparing ourselves. There comes a time for all of us to die."

What if the Cold Warriors -- Republicans and Democrats -- helped keep the Soviet Union going through their constant threats?

Here in the USA it's taken for granted that they fell only when they were bankrupted. No significant negotiations were allowed because the Soviets were pure evil, boom, no more thinking.

But was it maybe a devil's bargain -- i.e., each country's right wingers give the right wing authoritarians of the other side a perfect justification for their warlike and repressive policies.

The only thing which kept the Soviet regime in power beyond their guns -- and they still had their guns in 1990 -- was the population accepting that the West was planning to destroy them.

I think the answer is yes. I think the USA's Cold Warriors actually helped keep the authoritarians in power in the USSR longer than otherwise they could have remained.

But then that's a crazy thought and no one here should ever admit having considered it.

Maybe the right wingers are correct. Maybe we are too negitive.
For example - lets say you have deadly cancer in one lung and all your doctor wants to do is talk about the 5% of you that is diseased instead of focusing on the 95% of the rest of you that is perfectly healthy. Your doctor is obviously a defeatest to the cause and a traitor to the 95% of your body that is well. Find another doctor.

Bush uncle set to earn millions from company that profited from Iraq war

As President Bush embarks on a new effort to shore up public support for the war in Iraq, an uncle of the chief executive is collecting $2.7 million in cash and stock from the recent sale of a company that profited from the war.

A report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission shows that William H.T. Bush collected a little less than $1.9 million in cash plus stock valued at more than $800,000 as a result of the sale of Engineered Support Systems Inc. to DRS Technologies of New Jersey

I asked him after the speech if he had heard Richard Belzer was planning on reviving the National Lampoon Radio Hour, and that I thought it might be a good fit on a new liberal network. Regarding abstithe toxicity.. If you drink it like beer (ie like 6 every day) certainly your liver stats will elevate. Far far in advance of alcoholism. Thujone just is an awful sticky pine tar substance that is hard for the body to get rid of. So... 6 drinks in one night per month - no problem. But the problem with absinth is the high is so dreamy and innocuous that it is easy to drink often they make it so delicious and get hooked.

Its a wonderful thing to pull out at a party. With an absinthe fountain. Perfect for your ex-addict parties its just a little dangerous and makes a fun party activity.

The president never said Saddam was behind 9/11. Karl Rove is a very smart man. He understood how to link the two as frequently aspossible, so that the two would be linked in the minds of the voters. It's Tony Schwartz politics, ala the Responsive Chord.

You can't blame the media if the prsident happens to say "9/11" "Saddam" and "Al Qaeda" over and over again during a speech.

Hey Cathy,

I think the question is "When did I say nothing to you?"

Richard don't ever apologize, how come you did?

Posted by: Janet at March 23, 2006 8:11 PM

There's nothing you can do to please these right wing bastards...so don't even try....

Like Hillary...with her "reaching out" to right wingers with the flag-burning bill and support of the war....these people will never like you, never support you....if Hillary went to a KKK meeting, the rednecks still wouldn't vote for her....

Tim, who kidnapped those peace activists? Who probably would've killed them, maybe by cutting their fucking heads off??? Was it George Bush?

Fuck. I can't believe you idiots are real. Please don't ever leave the blogosphere, it frightens me to think that such stupid apologists for murder and terror really exist.

Posted by: Kevin at March 23, 2006 08:07 PM

George Bush is directly responsible for the disasters in Iraq. They are all related to his "Mission Accomplished" philosophy and war-mongering.
