AMERICAN MORALITY HAS BEEN STAINED

Zbigniew Brzezinski (via Think Progress, via Atrios):

The war has proven to be prohibitively costly. American leadership, in all of its dimensions, has been damaged. American morality has been stained – in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. American legitimacy has been undermined – by unilateral decisions. American credibility – particularly the case for the war, has been shattered. Leadership depends on morality, legitimacy, credibility. The economic costs of the war are escalating into hundreds of billions of dollars. More importantly, American casualties are in the thousands, with more than tens of thousands maimed. We are not even counting Iraqi casualties; we prefer not to know what they are.

Isn't it sad that we have to remind peeps of our own recent history? Americans have an attention span of 15 minutes, it is said.

I wonder how much that adds up to in Los Angeles

Thats why Bush wants to give Amnesty to the Mexicans.

Cheap Cheap labor, can impose laws because they were illegal aliens, to say not raise there min. wage, or not require employers to provide benefits.

Hell the latinos on the farms still buy from the company store. Like in the Robber barron days.

Anything but full scale war will fail.

Containment=Nam, Failed

Iraq=Occupation, Failed

Afganistan=Semi Occupation, installed Gov., Failed

Afganistan-Soviet Invasion for occupation, Failed

WW2=Just Full Scale War on two fronts.

Japs, Success Nazis, Success

Iran would be a failure as would China and N. Korea.

Iran Oil Bourse opening delayed

March 16, 2006 – In the last six months, the Muckraker Report has published numerous articles pertaining to Iran Oil Bourse and the impact that it could have on the stability of the U.S. dollar. The Iran Oil Bourse is intended to be the third exchange in the world in which global oil transactions are processed. Currently, all oil transactions are processed either by the New York Mercantile Exchange or the International Petroleum Exchange. All oil transactions processed through these two exchanges are done so with U.S. dollars. The Iran Oil Bourse is scheduled to process its oil transactions with euros.

All indications suggested that the Iran Oil Bourse was scheduled to open on March 20, 2006, but according to John Partridge, Investment Reporter for the Globe and Mail, the Iranian Oil Exchange is now unlikely to begin till at least midyear.[1] Quoting Mohammad Asemipur, special advisor on the project to Iran’s Oil Minister, in regard to the opening of the Iran Oil Bourse, Partridge wrote that Asemipur said, “In the middle of 2006, we are able to start the bourse.” Asemipur went on to say, “The plan is to trade petrochemical products first, with a crude oil contract coming last, a rollout that likely will take three years.”

The speculation by the Muckraker Report and many other economic theorists has been that if the world were to be able to purchase oil with euros instead of dollars and enough oil-consuming countries opted out of the dollar in favor of the euro, then the value of the dollar would be vulnerable to a significant devaluation. With the Iran nuclear threat rhetoric rising in unison with the approaching Iran Oil Bourse, it is not unreasonable to consider that the two topics are somehow connected. However, by suggesting that the sudden interest in Iran’s 30 year old, once U.S. sponsored nuclear power program, might be aggravated not by enriched uranium capabilities but by a overextended U.S. dollar that is only sustainable by faith in its purchasing power or by bullets, and such speculations are labeled as conspiracy theories, and discounted as if conspiracies have never proven to be factual.

hey bob, you use opera, right?

well indtead of having a whole different word file for the real player address, why not save it as a note in your ipera?

just right click, choose `save as note' and from then on all yo need to do is select and copy the link, then select the address bar, right click and select the `paste and go' option.

the great thing about the right click `insert notes' option is you can have a bunch of stuff stored there and ready to go.

you could have one your html links...all sorts of stuff.

Two men were sitting next to each other at a bar.
After a while, one guy looks at the other and says, "I can't help but think, from listening to you, that you're from Ireland."

The other guy responds proudly, "Yes, that I am!"

The first guy says, "So am I! And where about from Ireland might you be?"

The other guy answers, "I'm from Dublin , I am."

The first guy responds, "Sure and begora, and so am I! And what street did you live on in Dublin?"

The other guy says, "A lovely little area it was, I lived on McCleary Street in the old central part of town."

The first guy says, "Faith & it's a small world, so did I! So did I!! And to what school would you have been going?"

The other guy answers, "Well now, I went to St. Mary's of course."

The first guy gets really excited and says, "And so did I. Tell me, what year did you graduate?"

The other guy answers, "Well, now, let's see, I graduated in 1964."

The first guy exclaims, "The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same bar tonight. Can you believe it, I graduated from St. Mary's in 1964 my own self."

About this time, Vicky walks into the bar, sits down, and orders a beer. Brian, the bartender, walks over to Vicky, shaking his head & mutters, "It's going to be a long night tonight!!!!"

Vicky asks, "Why do you say that, Brian?"

"The Murphy twins are drunk again."

---A Bait Comedy Vignette---

Characters: War Dog, a G.I. Joe doll, a Rush Limbaugh doll (fat version), a combo-generic dark-skinned male doll wearing a burnoose (named Ayatoldya).

Setting: A suburban spa in a crowded Master Bathroom.

Scene opens with the Limbaugh doll (wearing an Izod golf shirt) egging-on the G.I. Joe doll (wearing full desert camo and gear) to "interrogate" the Ayatoldya doll (wearing a worried look). War Dog does all of the voices. The Limbaugh doll sounds like Limbaugh. The G.I. Joe doll sounds like an overly-excited twenty-year old with a tenor voice. The Ayatoldya doll screams gibberish in a falsetto.

All of the dolls are wet.

The Limbaugh doll encourages the G.I. Joe doll to ask impossible questions of the Ayatoldya doll, like, "How much would YOU pay for Unleaded?"

The Ayatoldya doll screams a burst of gibberish in his (War Dog's) falsetto.

The G.I. Joe doll smacks his head all over the Ayatoldya doll while screaming, "I'm American! Speak English!"

The Ayatoldya doll looks confused while the Limbaugh doll says, "Keep after him. I'll check in at the turn after the front nine." The Limbaugh doll motors-off in his golf cart.

War Dog pauses to sip his grapefruit juice.

...to be continued.

So, ok. You heard the 'Final Cut'? That was Waters' last Pink Floyd thing, except for the Berlin 'Wall' show, which really wasn't a Pink Floyd thing at all, more of a celebrity rock opera.

Then the reunion show, last year.

From the recording sessions of the 'Final Cut', (1983)to the Live 8 show rehearsals (2005) Waters and Gilmour couldn't be made to say two words to each other.

They literally didn't speak for 20 years. It was perhaps the fiercest 'grudge' in the music industry in recent memory.

---A Bait Comedy Vignette---

(continued)

War Dog flips the switch activating the spa jets. The water swirls and bubbles. Steam meanders upward.

War Dog (using his left hand) motors Limbaugh in his golf cart along the lip of the spa.

Limbaugh in his cart returns to the interrogation scene between the young G.I. Joe doll and the burnoose-clad Ayatoldya doll. Desert-spa sweat drips from them both. Golf-spa sweat drips from Limbaugh.

The Limbaugh doll (to the G.I. Joe doll): "Thanks to nine mulligans, I'm even bogey for nine. This place is one, big sand trap. What has Mohammad, here, told ya?"

G.I. Joe doll: "Hell, I don't know, I don't speak this shit. He keeps screaming something about Allah and his wife and daughter."

The Limbaugh doll: "Keep after him. Tell him he can't have freedom and democracy until he tells you where the WMD's are stored."

Ayatoldya doll: (More high-pitched gibberish awash in fear)

The Limbaugh doll smacks the Ayatoldya doll with his mashie niblick and motors a lap around the lip of the spa, yelling back to the G.I. Joe doll, "I'll check back in after the back nine."

The G.I. Joe doll jumps up and down on the Ayatoldya doll, screaming "Talk, godammit, so I can go home!"

The Ayatoldya doll screams in pain.

War Dog pauses to sip his grapefruit juice.

These are Trader Joes brand cookies were from Trader Joes(traderjoes.com). They have stores over most of the US. They are Chunky Cherry Oatmeal Cookies. A chewy oatmeal cookie chock full of cherry chunks and walnuts. No preservatives & no artificial colors, 12 ounces. They have about 2 or 3 other types of cookies as well.

All types of nuts are good for you as they contain essential nutrients & antioxidants. Also the fat in nuts is the good kind for you.

Enjoy! :) :P

WASHINGTON, March 17 — A federal appeals court today overturned the Environmental Protection Agency's attempt to exempt power plants, refineries and other pollution sources from Clean Air Act rules that require them to install costly new pollution controls whenever they make changes that increase their emissions.

Ruling in favor of a coalition of states and environmental advocacy groups, the court declared that the plain language of the act required a much stricter approach, as the Clinton administration had devised, and that only "a Humpty Dumpty" interpretation, as the court called the E.P.A.'s position, could construe the law otherwise.

"We decline such a world view," said the unanimous decision of a three-judge panel that included Judge Janice Rogers Brown, a conservative appointed last summer by President Bush.

Plaintiffs in the case — more than a dozen states, including New York and California, and a large group of environmental organizations — hailed the decision as one of the most important in years for environmental protection. The law governs more than 800 power plants around the country as well as 17,000 factories, refineries and chemical plants.

On Scene: How Operation Swarmer Fizzled
Not a shot was fired, or a leader nabbed, in a major offensive that failed to live up to its advance billing
By BRIAN BENNETT/AL JALLAM

Four Black Hawk helicopters landed in a wheat field and dropped off a television crew, three photographers, three print reporters and three Iraqi government officials right into the middle of Operation Swarmer. Iraqi soldiers in newly painted humvees, green and red Iraqi flags stenciled on the tailgates, had just finished searching the farm populated by a half-dozen skinny cows and a woman kneading freshly risen dough and slapping it to the walls of a mud oven.

The press, flown in from Baghdad to this agricultural gridiron northeast of Samarra, huddled around the Iraqi officials and U.S. Army commanders who explained that the "largest air assault since 2003" in Iraq using over 50 helicopters to put 1500 Iraqi and U.S. troops on the ground had netted 48 suspected insurgents, 17 of which had already been cleared and released. The area, explained the officials, has long been suspected of being used as a base for insurgents operating in and around Samarra, the city north of Baghdad where the bombing of a sacred shrine recently sparked a wave of sectarian violence.

But contrary to what many many television networks erroneously reported, the operation was by no means the largest use of airpower since the start of the war. ("Air Assault" is a military term that refers specifically to transporting troops into an area.) In fact, there were no airstrikes and no leading insurgents were nabbed in an operation that some skeptical military analysts described as little more than a photo op. What’s more, there were no shots fired at all and the units had met no resistance, said the U.S. and Iraqi commanders.

Violence Increases in Iraq
AP - 1 hour, 48 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Muslim pilgrims' road to the holy city of Karbala was a highway of bullets and bombs for Shiites on Friday. Drive-by shootings and roadside and bus bombs killed or wounded 19 people, ratcheting up the sectarian tensions gripping Iraq. Security forces, including U.S. armored reinforcements, girded for more bloodshed leading up to Monday's Shiite holiday. And north of Baghdad, in the Sunni Triangle, a two-day-old operation involving 1,500 U.S. and Iraqi troops swept through an area near Samarra in search of insurgents.

From Wikipedia

Patrick gathered many followers, including Saint Benignus, who would become his successor. His chief concerns were the raising up of native clergy, and abolishing Paganism, idolatry, and Sun-worship.

Pious legend credits Patrick with banishing snakes from the island, though post-glacial Ireland never actually had snakes; one suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that time and place, as shown for instance on coins minted in Gaul, or that it could have referred to beliefs such as Pelagianism, symbolized as "serpents."

In fact, there were no airstrikes and no leading insurgents were nabbed in an operation that some skeptical military analysts described as little more than a photo op.

From what I've read, the entire operation was a Class-A clusterfuck...a total waste of time & resources.

The poor neocons didn't get any live-fire shots, no captures, not a "suspected insurgent hideout" or IED factory...

NOTHING!

These are times when the MI types won't even show their faces or go out to get chow.

But, you know, you ABSOLUTELY know -- despite the WH's assertions to the contrary -- that the entire op was a fucking PR stunt.

And foo-foo has the unmitigated arrogance to use the label "bright, shiny things."

There isn't a civil war but it sort of looks like it and the bombs and carnage resemble something close...but it's not civil.

Sectarian Violence Increases in Iraq

- - - - - - - - - - - -

By BUSHRA JUHI Associated Press Writer

March 17,2006 | BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The Muslim pilgrims' road to the holy city of Karbala was a highway of bullets and bombs for Shiites on Friday.

It was in Samarra that the insurgent bombing of a Shiite shrine last month ignited days of violence between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. More than 500 people died.

Authorities had feared new attacks as tens of thousands of Shiites, many dressed in black and carrying religious banners, converge on Karbala, 50 miles south of the capital, for Monday's 40th and final day of mourning for Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

The U.S. military announced this week it was dispatching a fresh battalion of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, about 700 troops, to Iraq from its base in Kuwait to provide extra security for Shiite holy cities and Baghdad during this period.

Friday's bloodshed in Baghdad began as groups of faithful, many of them parents with children in tow, trekked down city streets headed for the southbound highway to Karbala.

At about 7:30 a.m., a BMW sedan driving alongside pilgrims in the western district of Adil opened fire, killing three young men and wounding two other people, police Lt. Thair Mahmoud said. Police later reported a second shooting, also in western Baghdad, in which men riding in a car fired on pilgrims near Um al-Tuboul Square, wounding three.

...and it goes on and on, you get the pic, huh?

Who were those guys?Agents posed as journalists before visitBy KAREN NELSONkarennelson2@aol.comThere was a whirlwind of activity in the days prior to President Bush's arrival at a home on the beach in Gautier last week, with government officials and Secret Service scouting a location and checking the neighborhood where Bush would stop.
The reason for all the fuss was kept a secret even from the family that received Bush. They didn't know it was prelude to a presidential visit until the day Bush arrived.
But one part of the preparation for the President's arrival involved two government agents posing as journalists.
Recounting the pre-visit days for WLOX and the Sun Herald, Jerry Akins, who received Bush, mentioned that on the Friday before Bush arrived, two men approached him identifying themselves as members of the media.
He said the men told him they were with Fox News out of Houston, Texas, and were on a "scouting mission" for a story on new construction. They took pictures inside Akins' house, which is under construction and looked up and down the road in the neighborhood.
Akins said he didn't think anything more about them partly because visits from strangers increased exponentially as government agents and Secret Service arrived that Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before the March 8 visit.
But after the president left Akins' home, the two men again approached Akins and let him know they were not media after all, but were with the governmental entourage.
Akins said the two showed him blue porcelain lapel pins that contained the Presidential seal and another government official confirmed the two were with the government entourage and not the media. Akins assumed they were Secret Service agents.

Although Patrick was not willing to abandon his vision of a Christian Ireland, he was getting desperate. He knew that because the strength of the people rested with the Druids, he had to get rid of them in order to get the people to listen to him.

Patrick was not alone in his efforts. He had brought many people with him from Britain to establish the new religion. Patrick began to destroy the influence of the Druids by destroying the sacred sites of the people and building churches and monasteries where the Druids used to live and teach. Gradually, the might of the Druidic class was broken by a bitter campaign of attrition. Instead of hearing the teachings and advice of the Druids, the people began to hear the teachings of Rome. Because the Druids were the only ones who were taught to remember the history, with the Druids dead and their influence broken, the history was forgotten.

Patrick won. By killing off the teachers and the wise ones, his own religion could be taught. For this mass conversion of a culture to Christianity, and for the killing of thousands of innocent people, Patrick was made a Saint by his church

Court blocks EPA from easing pollution rules
Appeals panel: White House-backed change violates Clean Air Act

Friday, March 17, 2006; Posted: 6:38 p.m. EST (23:38 GMT)

ALBANY, New York (AP) -- A federal appeals court blocked the Environmental Protection Agency on Friday from easing clean-air rules on aging power plants, refineries and factories, one of the regulatory changes that had been among the White House's environmental priorities.

The rules, strongly supported by industry representatives, would have allowed older plants to modernize without having to install advanced pollution controls.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington declared that the EPA rules violate the Clean Air Act and that only Congress can authorize such changes.

Fourteen states and a number of cities, including New York; San Francisco, California; and Washington, had sued to block the change in 2003, saying it would allow more air pollution.

Secret sell-off plan

The industry-favoured plan was pushed aside by a secret plan, drafted just before the invasion in 2003, which called for the sell-off of all of Iraq's oil fields. The new plan was crafted by neo-conservatives intent on using Iraq's oil to destroy the Opec cartel through massive increases in production above Opec quotas.

The sell-off was given the green light in a secret meeting in London headed by Fadhil Chalabi shortly after the US entered Baghdad, according to Robert Ebel.

Mr Ebel, a former Energy and CIA oil analyst, now a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, told Newsnight he flew to the London meeting at the request of the State Department.

Mr Aljibury, once Ronald Reagan's "back-channel" to Saddam, claims that plans to sell off Iraq's oil, pushed by the US-installed Governing Council in 2003, helped instigate the insurgency and attacks on US and British occupying forces.

Leaving out the fact that getting a good webcam feed is frequently not possible, relying on overpriced podcast subscribtions & lame slow refresh webcams is obviously lame marketing. Goldberg is doing that rather than increase and improve the stations they already have. If they were doing something with podcasts, they should make podcasts with a little less commercials included available of all programs at a low bit rate. That would be a missed revenue stre
