Women suffer most in aftermath of natural disasters, report says

From last year's tsunami in Asia to Hurricane Katrina in the United States, recent natural disasters have taken a particularly harsh toll on women, according to a new report.

Women face a variety of hardships during and after natural disasters, according to the report, "Caught in the Storm," released Tuesday by the San Francisco-based Global Fund for Women, an international human rights group. These include increased incidence of rape and domestic abuse, insufficient focus on women's health needs by disaster relief groups, and the exclusion of women from critical rebuilding and reconstruction efforts.

"We know that in the best of times, women have a hard time ensuring their economic security and protecting their livelihood," said Kavita Ramdas, president of the Global Fund, in a phone interview. "In the context of disasters, that vulnerability gets exacerbated."

The report's findings were based on firsthand accounts provided by women in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Guatemala, Pakistan and the U.S.

US says 5 million households face critical home needs

WASHINGTON, Dec 13 (Reuters) - More than five million low-income American households paid excessive rent or lived in substandard conditions in 2003, nearly unchanged from the mid-1990s, a U.S. government report showed on Tuesday.

The Housing and Urban Development Department, in a report to the U.S. Congress, said 5.18 million low-income households experienced critical housing needs due to low incomes, high rent or substandard conditions compared with 5.20 million in 1995.

The proportion of U.S. families facing such "worst case needs" was 4.89 percent, the department said.

A substantial proportion of those households have "worst case" housing needs despite being fully employed, according to the report.

US Intelligence Expert: Regime-Change the Answer in Iran

Former U.S. Justice Department prosecutor and intelligence expert John Loftus says that Israel is unable to thwart Iran's nuclear projects through military action – but that there is an alternative.

Loftus stressed, however, that there are other options that are likely to succeed and are already being put into effect. "The Bush administration is hoping that, ironically with Chirac's help, UN pressure will cause a regime-change in Syria. That the Mehlis investigation is going to come down hard and heavy. The US military is chomping at the bit to go across the border and take out the terror bases in Syria that Assad claims are not there. Once Syria is gone, Iran is isolated, with US troops on both their borders, in Afghanistan and in Iraq."

The intelligence expert, who has contacts in the Pentagon, says that the strategy is not for the US to actually invade Iran, but to affect a regime-change. "One of the intelligence agencies, which shall remain nameless, asked me to hold a conference of dissident groups in Iran. We are holding that conference and getting ready for regime-change."

"The aircraft carriers are there to defend the picket-line of ships that will place a blockade on the Straits of Hormuz," Loftus said. "Ninety percent of Iran's economy is based on oil exports – so a blockade of as little as three weeks can cause their economy to collapse, the people to rise up and the mullahs to be overthrown. The problem with this is that Iran knows that this is the most likely scenario and they have been preparing for three years to thwart it. They have developed vessels whose job is to sink as many oil tankers as possible to block the Straits of Hormuz . Once two, three or four vessels are sunk, you have cut off 40% of the world's oil supply. So the US doesn't mind – we have a six-month stockpile of oil - but the EU is much more fragile and susceptible to oil shocks. So we might have to dump a large share of the US stockpile on the world market until the regime falls."

According to exhaustive research by German entheobotanist Christian Ratsch in his book Marijuana Medicine, Ostara's spring worship involved the sacrifice, roasting and consumption of a sacred hare, quaffed down with hemp beers, followed by public, collective lovemaking. The Germanic fertility goddess Freya was similarly honored with cannabis as a sacrament.

Cannabis, eggs and fertility were closely associated among Germanic pagans. Ratsch discovered that the hardy Nordic peoples would feed cannabis seeds to hens, so that they could lay eggs through the long winter season. As spring equinox approached, they would use stalks of the plant as arrows to "shoot away winter," ushering in a season of verdant growth and urgent lovemaking.

Cannabis orgies in celebration of Ostara were eventually outlawed by the Catholic Church. Pagan sacraments like hemp beer fell victim to secular laws, like the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516, which outlawed beer made from anything but hops and barley. Only the sacred hare survived, transformed into a chocolaty economic opportunity for candy makers and dentists.

Saginaw Township On The O'Reilly Factor Radio Program

(TV5) -- A Mid-Michigan Township makes national news but there's a problem, local officials say the whole thing was made up.

Bill O'Reilly is making the claim that Saginaw Township officials banned residents from wearing red and green during the holiday season. Local officials say he's dead wrong.

Syndicated controversial talk show host Bill O’Reilly said on his radio show:

“In Saginaw , Michigan , the township opposes red and green clothing…on Anyone, In Saginaw Township they basically said anybody, we don’t want you wearing red or green. I would dress up from head to toe in red to green if I were in Saginaw Michigan .”

-- Bill O’Reilly

WNEM TV-5 Talked to Saginaw Township supervisor Tim Braun who says O’Reilly’s comments are flat out not true. Braun goes on to say the township hall has red and green Christmas lights adorning the building at night.

Prosecutor in DeLay case subpoenas records from defense contractors

California companies tied to Cunningham bribery case

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Texas prosecutor has issued subpoenas for bank records of a defense contractors involved in the bribery case of a California congressman as part of the investigation of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

District Attorney Ronnie Earle issued subpoenas last Thursday for California businessmen Brent Wilkes and Max Gelwix, records of Perfect Wave Technologies, Wilkes Corp. and ADCS Inc. in connection with a contribution to a fundraising committee.

It's at the center of the investigation that led to DeLay's indictment on money laundering charges.

Perfect Wave contributed $15,000 in September 2002 to Texans for a Republican Majority, a fundraising committee founded by DeLay.

See what they would do is open fake companies that didn't sell a service or a product then they would contribute to the congressmans campaign in the name of the company thereby going around campaign donation limits...

Then the congressmen in question would authorize government contracts to these companies and they would be paid back off tax payers money...

They they would use this money to bribe more congressmen aka cunningham etc....

You tax dollars have been paying for republican campaigns illegally...

No wonder they always have more money!

How does that make you feel about that piddling tax cut they gave you?

Bush Job Approval at 38%

After edging above 40%, it fades again

President Bush’s job approval rating languishes under 40%, despite an upturn in the economy and a public relations onslaught defending the role of the U.S. military in rebuilding Iraq, a new telephone poll by Zogby International shows.

Just 38% of Americans said they approve of the job the President is doing, down from 41% in a national Zogby America survey conducted last month.

The survey showed Mr. Bush is most popular in the western United States, where 46% approve of the job he is doing, and the South, where 44% approve. Just 28% in the East and 37% in the Midwest and Great Lakes states give him good marks.

Did a Powerful Congressman Receive Favors in Alleged 'Corruption Scheme?'

Congressman Bob Ney Is Under Investigation in Connection With Notorious Lobbyist

"A good part of Bob Ney's power comes from the reality that members of Congress are constantly going to him and asking for little things," said Norman Ornstein, a congressional scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. "From the ability to have a room to run a reception to making sure that your administrative assistant gets to park reasonably close to the elevator — those little things accumulate, so you do not want the chair of the house administration committee to be unhappy with you."

But now, court documents suggest Ney may have received favors in an alleged "corruption scheme" involving Washington's most notorious lobbyists: Jack Abramoff and his former partner, Mike Scanlon. They allegedly schemed to cheat their clients, enrich themselves and shower members of Congress with political contributions.

In all honesty, is anyone shocked that a piece on the O'Reilly Factor turned out to be flat-out not true?

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto refuting O'Reilly's contention:

"The school district does not restrict students or staff from wearing certain color clothes during holiday times or any other school days," noted Dr. Otto, who said that the school district's attorney has requested that Mr. O'Reilly retract the statement.

If smokers ate their cigs -- it wouldn't be a public issue. But if their smoke gets in my face, then it's my issue.

Smokers are just plain nuts anyway. The nicotine does something to their cognitive processes. Ever notice how smokers are always pissed off about something?

And they don't think cig smoke is offensive because they can't smell it anymore. Their nose and throat are so screwed up that they think smoke doesn't smell. They also think that a cig butt disappears if you throw it on the ground and step on it.

Posted by: Tim the Democrat at December 13, 2005 8:54 PM

Grotesque!!!

Posted by: khama at December 13, 2005 8:54 PM

America has sent Mexico billions in aid while
ostracizing the 25 million unemployed or underemployed
americans . American Business illegally employed
criminals for the sole purpose of driving down wages ,
sending americans into banishment from their own
industrys and dumping the healthcare, school and
prison costs onto the American taxpayer.

Sadly , America tried to create Jobs in Mexico but the
Mexicans who were there refused to work there
preferring to come to America to recieve ( thanks to
taxpayer) Free public housing, Free welfare for
mexican women who stay at home, free welfare and child
support for the on average 3 kids which they cannot
afford to raise, free social security disability for
mexican grandparents ( after 2 years in america on
welfare) free healthcare ( americans excluded) free
prison , free police, fire, schools, public defenders,
immigration attorneys and of course NO INCOME TAXES .

Mexico and its legal workers have no interest in
creating jobs for mexico . Mexico is sending it's
garbage to America . How would you like it if you
found twenty overflowing garbage cans outside your
residence every day . It is time to deport the
mexicans here or hire them to build a fence on the
border . American billionaires like the Walmart mob (
100 billion) Microsoft gang (60 billion) Warren Buffet
(50 billion) can chip in 10% each and the taxpayer
will save ten times the cost of building the fence and
employ 150,000 Americans to guard the fence and 50,000
to build the fence. We have one million black men in
prison , many because illegal immigration has forced
them into the drug trade . if there was a shortage of
workers we could select 100,000 to serve on border
guard duty in exchange for reduced sentence or pardon
. this would help state budgets.

America could continue taxing itself to pay for Mexico
to send drugs and guest workers but it is time to

Wage slavery is the new slavery. It's amazing. Recently a local teacher's strike here in Vt got pretty ugly. Normally rational people were saying things like "Well, I can't go into my boss's office and ask for a 5% raise."

THAT is the problem: A race to the bottom and a lowering of expectations.
