Oh, I'm Sorry. I Thought This Was America.
From Molly Ivins, published by Working for Change:
I can't get over this feeling of unreality, that I am actually sitting here writing about our country having a gulag of secret prisons in which it tortures people. I have loved America all my life, even though I have often disagreed with the government. But this seems to me so preposterous, so monstrous. My mind is a little bent and my heart is a little broken this morning.
It's worth reading the whole thing.

For the second day in a row, National Public Radio's (NPR) Morning Edition has misrepresented Virginia Governor-elect Tim Kaine's position on abortion, labeling Kaine "pro-life" and promoting the conservative spin that Kaine, a Democrat, won because he took a Republican position on abortion.
This representation is false, given that Kaine made an issue during the campaign of the differences between him and his Republican opponent on the issue of abortion. Kaine supports legal access to abortion, as do the majority of Democrats. Misrepresentations such as those forwarded by NPR skew the important national dialogue on the issue of abortion access, as well as on the issue of where the two major political parties in this country stand on issues of concern to the electorate. NPR should know better.
Take action! Tell NPR to stop misrepresenting Virginia Governor-elect Tim Kaine and his position on abortion. Contact NPR at: LINK

Senators then rejected an effort by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., to force a vote today on her recommendation to censure the president for ``shameful, reckless and indefensible'' behavior. The symbolic effort, which several Democrats said would not be revived later on, was a reminder that, acquittal aside, Clinton remains forever tarnished as only the second president in history to be impeached.
Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle said Clinton's acquittal should not be seen as vindication for his behavior. ``This was a rebuke. There is no question,'' Daschle said of the impeachment.

Wil,
I am not trying to pick a fight. I don't like fights in general and blog fights are particularly unsatisfying; so, go easy on me.
I have been reading (and listening to) Molly Ivins since before I gave a damn about politics.
She is one of the reasons that my political cynism moved to one side and allowed a little room for political science to have a seat at the table.
I don't believe that Molly Ivins "finally woke up".

I read that, but doubt it will come about.
He has a few strikes against him. A Senate Majority Leader being defeated for reelection does not say much for his likelihood of getting the nomination.
Then his wife is a lobbyist doesn't help either.
I suspect he may "lightly" test the waters and find them too volatile to go wading in.

The next time I tell you someone from Texas should not be President, please pay attention.
So deeply does President Bush feel our country, despite all its treaty commitments, has a right to torture that he has threatened to veto the bill if it passes. This would be the first time in five years he has vetoed anything. Think about it: Five years of stupefying pork, ideological nonsense, dumb administrative ideas, fiscal idiocy, misbegotten energy programs - and the first thing the man vetoes is a bill to pay our soldiers because it carries an amendment saying, once again, that this country does not torture prisoners. Remember, we invaded Iraq because Saddam Hussein was such a horrible brute that he tortured people.
This is the United States of America. It is our country, not George W. Bush's personal property.

We're trying to determine the gravity of Clinton's impeachment. In order to do that, you must tell us why you think the Senate didn't remove him from office.
Posted by: Perfunctory Overalls at November 11, 2005 03:38 PM
What I think about it as well as what you think about it is of little consequence, but to answer your question.. I think there were a couple reasons being considered, and perhaps more. None of which do I think included Clinton being innocent of the charges.
I think there were larger considerations about the value of it all to the Nation and party politics played a role.
Now why do you think the Senate did not remove him from office?

The entire poverty of Africa is because of the arrangement between Western corporate interests, and local Neo-Colonial elites.
Western corporations will always find stooges which allow them to rob Africa of it's natural resources, whether that is diamonds, oil, gold, copper, chromium, or the huge trancts of land theys stole (we're talking about literally hundreds of millions of hectares of land African farmers have no access to).
They will ALLWAYS try and kill the Patrice Lumumba's, and push to the forefront the Mobutu's.

For anyone who is aware of the recent race for the state senate seat in my district and is anxiously awaiting the results of my fact-finding research regarding the dirty campaigning:
No results yet.
However, the local Republican-controlled rag that printed (what amounted to) a faxed press release on the front page in the eleventh hour prior to the election has printed a Letter To The Editor from the daughter of the loser (both D).
Her letter restates exactly the only (democratic blog) information that I have discovered thus far.
That is: That the Republican campaigner lied about his Democrat opponent in the eleventh hour.

DeLay's Legal Team Works to Get Charges Dropped
Friday, November 11, 2005
AUSTIN, Texas — Attorneys for Rep. Tom DeLay asked for internal documents from the local prosecutor, hoping to show he went after the powerful Republican despite opposition from grand juries.
DeLay's attorneys asked Democratic District Attorney Ronnie Earle to provide any internal communications from his office that argued against indicting the former House majority leader.
Earle's office declined to comment on Thursday's written request from defense attorney Dick DeGuerin. The request asks for "internal notes, memoranda or documents which recommend against seeking an indictment against Tom DeLay."
The letter asks that Earle let the defense know "whether you will voluntarily produce these documents."
Delay's legal team hopes the documents will bolster their arguments that the money laundering and conspiracy charges against DeLay should be dropped.
Judge Pat Priest has scheduled a Nov. 22 conference to meet with attorneys.
DeLay was indicted on a conspiracy charge Sept. 28. A second grand jury considered the case after questions were raised about when the law on which the conspiracy charge was based went into effect, but the panel returned no indictment.
Days later, a third grand jury indicted DeLay on money-laundering charges, which carry five years to life in prison on conviction.
Earle has said he went to the third grand jury after finding new evidence.
DeGuerin contends that Earle unlawfully participated in the second grand jury's deliberations to seek another indictment, and that Earle tried to "browbeat and coerce" grand jurors into filing criminal charges.

dr made it clear to me that, because War Dog wanted Saddam Hussein removed from Iraq, War Dog was willing to have it done in any manner, at any cost, for any reason, because the end justified the means.
I have not been able to stop thinking about War Dog's drive to remove Saddam Hussein from Iraq (why not Castro or Kim Jong-il?) nor his willingness to have it done no matter what; lies and torture be damned.

Clinton today blasted his impeachment.
He should have blasted it back in 1998, instead of kissing the GOP ass throughout his presidency.
And Feinstein and Daschle talking about "censure" and "his acquittal doesn't legitimize his behaviour" doesn't inspire confidence either. Clinton's impeachment was the biggest joke this country ever produced. And to actually take it seriously is a true embarrasment for every American. It was simply an affair in which he got caught. Nothing more, nothing less.

The entire poverty of Africa is because of the arrangement between Western corporate interests, and local Neo-Colonial elites.
Posted by: I at November 11, 2005 05:01 PM
=======================================================
I disagree with your broad generalizations regarding the many diverse countries in Africa.
While I agree that Africans generally have NOT benefited from the wealth in their respective countries, it is inaccurate to state that poverty is a result of an "arrangement between Western corporate interests, and local Neo-Colonial elites."
An example to refute your statement would be the massive development efforts of China in many countries in Africa. China is working currently with the Sudanese government to drill for oil in Sudan. In fact, China is expanding its interests in many areas of Africa at an alarming rate with little regard for human rights. In the past, the former Soviet Union also competed with "western interests" in Africa. Ironically, during the Cold War - many countries in Africa were better off than they are today if you examine the development aid that they received and the statistics on life expectancy and deaths from various diseases.
The root causes of poverty in Africa vary depending on many factors including disease, war, inequality, and lack of education. While western corporate interests and local elites may be responsible for exploiting many African people and resources, it is inaccurate to state that they are entirely responsible for the extreme poverty that exists in many parts of Africa.

Democratic leader fires back at Bush speech: We must change the course
HIS OFFICE ALSO ASSERTED THE FOLLOWING:
President Bush said today that Democrats in Congress “had access to the same intelligence” as he did in deciding to go to war in Iraq.
Fact: Congress did not have access to the same intelligence the Bush Administration did. And intelligence passed through the White House before getting to Congress.
According to Bob Woodward's Plan of Attack:
The Bush Administration showed Saudi Prince Bandar more intelligence than was shown to Congress. (p. 264.)
Senators Not Shown the National Intelligence Estimate Until Three Days Before the Iraq War Vote. It is not until October 8, 2002, three days before the Senate vote on the Iraq war resolution, and after debate has already started, that 47+ senators are briefed or shown the entire NIE with its key judgment that Iraq "has chemical and biological weapons," writes Woodward. (p. 203)

"Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be lied to. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery."

Are you kidding?
Everyone will have to produce an I.D. and sign a blood pressure waiver.
(I know, I know...salt isn't the high blood pressure culprit that it used to be. Some jokes rely on ignorance.)

(My spelling is off tonight. Anyway...)
Once Africa rids itself of these neo-colonial elites, they can get down to the business of introducing proper government.
What has to be remembered is that these corporations are more powerful than many governments. They can subsidize mercenaries, arm the opposition (think of Haiti), and once established, it is very difficult for people to overthrow a dictatorship. It is bloody, it is very hard to organize under a dictatorship, etc.

On Veteran's Day, lefties advocate surrender, Associate Press helps:
The latest disgusting action by the “Peace and Justice” crowd—a display of white flags at a veterans’ cemetery in Maine. And the Associated Press is happy to help promote their sick agenda, by referring to symbols of surrender as “peace flags:” Protesters Try to Remove Maine Peace Flags.
WATERVILLE, Maine - Protesters led by a veterans post tried to remove a flag display placed by peace activists at a veterans cemetery, and five were charged with criminal trespass.
The display remained intact Friday, Veterans Day, despite a threat by at least one of the protesters to return later to finish yanking up the flags.
The display of 2,000 white flags, meant to remember U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq, was set up at Veterans Memorial Park cemetery Oct. 30 under a permit issued to Waterville Area Bridges for Peace and Justice.
Members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post complained, saying they wanted the flags removed before Veterans Day. The permit allows the flags to remain in place until the first snowfall.

The worst thing about AAR is the inanely repetitive ads.
The best thing is the blog although it too is often nauseously repetitive. The blog however, is often more informative than the programs and that makes it all worthwhile.

Molly Mapes is a piece of work, rivaling Nobody:
On Friday, September 3, 2004, I was closing down my office and thinking about the Labor Day Weekend ahead when the phone rang and the caller asked whether I would be willing to work over the weekend on some important, time-sensitive documents. This was the beginning of my involvement in the examination of documents in the Bush National Guard Document/Memo-Gate news story.
This week, the book "Truth and Duty" by Mary Mapes, former CBS producer, was released. The book contains several inaccuracies in the description of my participation. Because the book is a public document, I see it as my duty to publicly state the truth about what I said and did.
Posted by: Anonymous Coward at November 11, 2005 6:55 PM
The peace activists stayed out of the fracas.
"Obviously, I don't want to fight them for the flags," said Bill Lord, a Vietnam veteran. "Really, I think that the VFW and Bridges for Peace and Justice have a lot in common. I believe in peacefully working things out."
Yes .. obviously this is highly sick agenda... Peace. Disgusting!
