Clinton speaks out against the war -- FINALLY!

http://news.independent.co.uk/world/politics/article327773.ece

Republicans and Democrats joined forces to demand the White House explain every three months how it intends to "complete the mission" in Iraq.

The next day, Mr Clinton weighed in from the Middle East, saying the war as it unfolded was "a big mistake". It was a good thing Saddam Hussein had gone, the former president said, "but I don't agree with what was done". The administration underestimated "how easy it would be to overthrow Saddam and how hard it would be to unite the country".

He said President George Bush had made "several errors, including the total dismantlement of the authority structure of Iraq". He added: "We never sent enough troops and didn't have enough troops to control or seal the borders." Across those porous borders, "the terrorists came in. That was the central mistake, and we're still living with that".

Cate:

In all nations who follow the neo-con policy norms ....

The gap between rich and poor has widened,

The numbers of extremely rich has risen but they are a very small part of the overall population,

the numbers of those below the recognized poverty cut-off line has increased,

Those who can NOT afford necessities such as health insurance have increased,

Child poverty is on the rise,

Malnutrition in the general population is on the increase,

disease such as diabetis, obesity, TB, AIDS, malaria, Hepatitis, are all on the increase,

The number of homeless is increasing,

Affordable housing is less readily available.

This factors and events are also seen in other nations that have followed the US economic model eg Canada, UK, OZ, NZ, France, etc.

The opposite is seen in Nations such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland where socialist governments have provided not just better economic growth, but a vastly superior standard of living for all of their populations.

The minimum wage is Norway eg is $19 per hour and rising as it is indexed to the cost of living.

The UN has reams of links and sources.

The UN also shows that the IMF/WTO/NAFTA/CAFTA/ FTAA/World Bank edicts are a crock and cause further enrichment of the wealthy and further impoverishment of the extremely poor.

The establishment of national institutions, and education is the answer if it can be done free of corporate interference.

Poll: More Americans Want Domestic Focus

WASHINGTON -- The public's belief that the United States should mind its own business internationally has reached levels not seen since after the Cold War ended more than a decade ago, a poll found.

Opinion leaders from various parts of society also are less likely to feel the U.S. should be the most assertive of the leading nations, according to the poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. The poll, sponsored this year by Pew and the Council on Foreign Relations, has been conducted by Pew every four years since 1993.

Anxiety about the war in Iraq is likely a big reason for the shift in attitudes.

"What's striking is the common thread, both the opinion leaders favoring a less assertive role for the United States and the public's isolationist views," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center. "This particular period of time marks a transition from the post-9/11 era." More -

Military Faces Decline in Black Recruits

NEW YORK (NNPA) – Keyon Brown, a 26-year-old college graduate of York College in Queens, was recently approached by an Army recruiter near his Flatbush home and politely rejected his enrollment offer.

“I have a career, and even if I didn't, I wouldn't enlist in the war right now with everything going on,” he said. “We can't even come up with an answer to why we are fighting, anyways.”

The war in Iraq has had a devastating effect on the army's recruitment of Blacks.
A 2005 Pew Research Poll shows that Blacks are twice as likely as Whites to oppose the war.

''We saw the most precipitous drop immediately after Sept. 11,'' Maj. Gen. Michael Rochelle, commander of Army recruiting, said at the Pentagon this year.

Since 2000, African-American enrollment in the army has declined by close to 40 percent. Since the 1970s, the Army has relied on Blacks for a quarter of its soldiers, though African-Americans constituted less than 15 percent of the population.

We must encourage Janeane to give a short little speech if she is inquisitioned by the judge at her jury duty that she said is coming up.

When the judge or lawyers attempt to stack the jury with pro-government jurors and ask her questions such as, "is there any reason you won't follow the judge's instructions on the law?" Janeane should answer--and thereby educate everyone else in the jury pool--by saying that "it is a principle of our democratic system that jurors must follow their consciences and not the judges instructions."

If they don't immediately physically stop her from saying anything else, then she should also blurt out to the other prospective jurors, "It is your democratic duty to vote not guilty if a defendant is charged with violating some law but has victimized no one."

For this she will immediately be dismissed, so she will be able to get back to her TV show, but she may inspire a few people in the jury pool to sneak on the jury and save some poor schlepp from being tortured abu graib-style.

Does anybody know an email address where I can send this important encouragement her way?

Ben Bradlee Defends Woodward's Actions in Plame Case

NEW YORK Former Washington Post Executive Editor Ben Bradlee today defended Bob Woodward, who revealed in a story Wednesday that he waited more than two years before disclosing to current Post editors a conversation he had in 2003 with a White House official about CIA Agent Valerie Plame.

"I don't see anything wrong with that," said Bradlee, who ran the Post during the turbulent Watergate coverage that made Woodward famous. "He doesn't have to disclose every goddamn thing he knows."

Woodward had shown Bradlee a copy of his statement on Tuesday before it was published. And he explained: "Woodward never has 'no involvement' because he is who he is."

Bradlee, who retired in 1991, but still maintains an office at the paper, made his comments following a story in today's Post about Woodward's recent testimony before special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. The story revealed that Woodward testified Monday in a two-hour deposition before Fitzgerald, in which he disclosed that "a senior administration official told him about CIA operative Valerie Plame and her position at the agency nearly a month before her identity was disclosed." The story also revealed, however, that Woodward did not disclose this conversation to Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr., until last month. More -

The GDP of the poorest 48 nations (i.e. a quarter of the world's countries) is less than the wealth of the world's three richest people combined.

Around the world, inequality is increasing, while the world appears to globalize. Even the wealthiest nation has the largest gap between rich and poor compared to other developed nations. In many cases, international politics and various interests have led to a diversion of available resources from domestic needs to western markets. Historically, politics and power play by the elite leaders and rulers have increased poverty and dependency. These have often manifested themselves in wars, hot and cold, which have often been trade and resource-related. Mercantilist practices, while presented as free trade, still happen today. Poverty is therefore not just an economic issue, it is also an issue of political economics.

The 1984 "REX exercises" simulated civil unrest culminating in a national emergency with a contingency plan for the imprisonment of 400,000 people. REX 84 was so secretive that special metal security doors were installed on the FEMA building's fifth floor, and even long-term officials of the Civil Defense Office were prohibited entry. Bernstein Says There's Too Much 'Piling On' Woodward

NEW YORK Watergate legend Carl Bernstein warned critics to back off their attacks on his former partner Bob Woodward following this week’s disclosures that Woodward had testified in the Valerie Plame case, and had failed to inform Washington Post editors for two years about a confidential conversation he’d had with a White House official.

“I think there is an awful lot of piling on,” Bernstein told E&P. “It’s outrageous to question Bob’s integrity as some seem to be doing. Anyone who looks at the record knows that it is the most distinguished journalistic record of our time.”

Bernstein said he found out about the story on Tuesday when Woodward called him to tell him. “He called me, and told me what was going on. We both expected there would be criticism as well as internal angst [at the Post].”

He also said he had known about Woodward’s testimony “within the last couple of days.” When asked if he knew the identity of Woodward’s source, he said, “I’m not going to get into that.”

Bernstein’s comments followed revelations Wednesday in the Post that Woodward had testified in a two-hour deposition Monday about having received information from an administration official about former CIA agent Valerie Plame in 2003. The same story revealed Woodward did not disclose the conversation with the official to Post executive editor Leonard Downie Jr., until last month.

Downie on Wednesday acknowledged his disappointment in Woodward’s failure to reveal the conversation sooner, but said he accepted an apology from Woodward and had asked him to be more open about such information in the future.

The new information has sparked some criticism from observers, who contend that Woodward had wrongly withheld the information. Bernstein says those critics should look at Woodward’s 30-plus years of work in investigative journalism first. More -

" Under "REX" the President could declare a state of emergency, empowering the head of FEMA to take control of the internal infrastructure of the United States and suspend the constitution. The President could invoke executive orders 11000 thru 11004 which would:

1- Draft all citizens into work forces under government supervision.

2- Empower the postmaster to register all men, women and children.

3- Seize all airports and aircraft.

4- Seize all housing and establish forced relocation of citizens.

FEMA, whose black budget comes from the Department of Defense, has worked closely with the Pentagon in an effort to avoid the legal restrictions of Posse Comitatus.

While FEMA may not have been directly responsible for these precedent-setting cases, the principle of federal control was seen during the Los Angeles riots in 1992 with the federalization of the National Guard and during the siege at Waco, where Army tanks equipped with flame throwers were involved in the final conflagration."

Yes. It seems they want me to post on their forum so I will. There's not much traffic there, so hopefully the webmaster will bring this mission to her immediate attention.

She seems too full of conviction to do a "I love chinks" thing, but I can see her giving a passionate lecture to the other jurors to stand up and do the right thing.

Did the hosts remember to wear their "Golden Hammer" lapel pins at the DeLay fundraiser tonight?

************************************************************************************

DeLay Collects $1.2m From Lobbyists, More Coming Tonight

Of the event's 67 sponsors, at least 60 have registered as lobbyists since 2004, including 44 who work at K Street lobbying firms.

Seven other sponsors are in-house lobbyists who work for the energy industry, which recently received billions in subsidies, tax breaks and regulatory rollbacks from DeLay's successful passage of major energy legislation this past summer.
