WEST WING OPEN THREAD

To be clear, Janeane had to to put in 4 extra days of atonement at Yom Kippur after advising a Presidential candidate to play up "intelligent design" on West Wing, even though she:

a) was setting up Jimmy Smits' character to trash it, and

b) she's not Jewish.

Also, for your enjoyment, drink up some of Jim Walcott's awesomeness on the Judy Miller bullshit:

Let us not be too harsh on Judith Miller herself, however. She was caught up in the hypnotic voodoo of highstakes journalism. We've all been there. All of us veteran reporters who risk our parking privileges in pursuit of a hot story know what it's like to have strange words leap into your notebook out of nowhere in the middle of an intense interrogation.

You're sitting there having breakfast at the St. Regis with Scooter Aspen, buttering each other's toast, and somehow the name "Valerie Flame" pops up in your notebook without you knowing how it got there! It's your handwriting, sure enough, but rack your brain much as you will, you just can't remember which little birdie tweeted that name into your ear.

'Hidden Scandal' in Miller Story, Charges Former CBS Newsman

There is one enormous journalism scandal hidden in Judith Miller's Oct. 16th first person article about the (perhaps lesser) CIA leak scandal. And that is Ms. Miller's revelation that she was granted a DoD security clearance while embedded with the WMD search team in Iraq in 2003.

This is as close as one can get to government licensing of journalists and the New York Times (if it knew) should never have allowed her to become so compromised. It is all the more puzzling that a reporter who as a matter of principle would sacrifice 85 days of her freedom to protect a source would so willingly agree to be officially muzzled and thereby deny potentially valuable information to the readers whose right to be informed she claims to value so highly.

Kevin Drum has three really good posts on the Judy Miller portion of the Plame finale.

In one post he reminds of John Bolton's man Fred Fleitz as a very probable background player in the drama. And he rightly points to the significance of Miller's having been told by someone -- just who is almost a secondary matter -- the name 'Plame' rather than simply told that Joe Wilson's wife worked as a clandestine operative at CIA.

In the second he doubts the now-popular notion that Miller's attorney Bob Bennett hoodwinked Fitzgerald by getting him to agree to limit his questions to her conversations with Libby.

This last one explains why Miller's claim not to remember who identified Wilson's wife as "Plame" is obviously false.

MILLER'S MEMORY....For what it's worth, I just want to point out that Judith Miller's contention that she can't remember who originally provided her with the name "Valerie Flame" is completely ridiculous. She apparently wrote down the name in her notebook sometime around July 8, 2003, and obviously she knew where it came from at the time. Within a week, Robert Novak had written his infamous column in which he outed Valerie Plame, and Miller certainly hadn't forgotten who provided her the name that quickly. A couple of days later all hell broke loose, and that would have etched the name of her source in her mind permanently.

Miller's excuse for her forgetfulness is that "It is also difficult, more than two years later, to parse the meaning and context of phrases, of underlining and of parentheses." But it's not a matter of Miller not remembering a trivial detail two years after the fact. It's a question of whether she remembered it a week after the fact.

Answer: of course she did. And if she remembered it then, she certainly remembers it now. She just doesn't want to say so.

Miers Headed Law Firm Repeatedly Forced to Pay Damages For Defrauding Investors

In case anyone thought Harriet Miers wasn't a corporate-shill-in-White-House-clothing, take a gander at how Miers did her best Ken Lay impression while heading a major Texas corporate law firm.

That's right, according to the 5/1/00 newsletter Class Action Reporter, Miers headed Locke, Liddell & Sapp at the time the firm was forced to pay $22 million to settle a suit asserting that "it aided a client in defrauding investors."

The details of the case are both nauseating and highly troubling, considering President Bush is considering putting Miers at the top of America's legal system.

Under Miers' leadership, the firm represented the head of a "foreign currency trading company [that] was allegedly a Ponzi scheme." The law firm admitted that it "knew in March 1998 that $8 million in [the company's] losses hadn't been reported to investors" but didn't tell regulators.

This wasn't an isolated incident, either. The Austin American-Statesman reported in 2001 that Miers' law firm was forced to pay another $8 million for a similar scheme to defraud investors.

The suit, which dealt with actions the firm took under Miers in the late 1990s, was again quite troubling. As the 9/20/00 Texas Lawyer reported, Miers' firm helped a now-convicted con man "defraud investors and allowed the firm's [bank] account to be used as a 'conduit.'"

The suit said "money from investors that went into the firm's trust account was deposited into [the con man's] bank accounts and was used to pay for his 'expensive toys.'"

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/10/16/22116/019

For a journalist, Miller seems remarkably sloppy in her investigative skills. Miller wrote the name, "Valerie Flame" in her notes taken around the time of her discussions with Libby, but claims she "could not recall where that name came from, when [she] wrote it or why the name was misspelled." This is CRAP. I take notes when speaking with clients or coworkers about topics of importance, and I can always tell on reading over my notes again where the information came from. I can only think this would be especially true if the notes concerned a topic that controlled my professional life for two years, resulting in me being subpoenaed to testify in front of a grand jury on multiple occasions, which I refused, resulting in me spending nearly 3 months in jail with nothing to do but think.

Judith Miller is Full of Crap.

It is clear that Miller knows she discussed Plame with someone other than Libby; she just doesn't want to talk about it. Miller says she testified to the grand jury that she did not believe that name came from Libby, "in part because the notation does not appear in the same part of my notebook as the interview notes from him." Note that she merely says what she "testified to"--and does not state this as an actual fact. This is a recurring theme throughout her article, so I won't repeat it again, but it seems a convenient way to merely recite what she told Fitzgerald without actually reporting as fact these various tidbits of information that she imparted to him. Also, what is the other "part" of the fact equation that led her to believe Libby didn't give her the name? This is, conveniently, left unanswered. Except of course, for the part of the article in which Miller says she told Fitzgerald she "believed the information came from another source, whom I cannot recall." Again, not stated as fact; just stated as what she told Fitzgerald. Strangely, Miller also told Fitzgerald that while she had discussed the Wilson-Plame connection with other sources, she "could not recall any by name or when those conversations occurred."

There's ups and downs to putting more energy into a database like that.

Certainly, it should be done. And actually, I've met with other people from lefty news-ish organizations about doing it not just with articles, but with sound clips and video as well.

It's something that, if done, has to be done right.

Because it would not only benefit us, it would benefit everyone. A tool to make it easier for people with an internet connection to be politically informed.

We started posting the stories S and J talk about on the blog to start...it helps us too.

The next step is a bigger jump.

On another front, re: recycling info:

Most AAR listeners don't listen to AAR all day. Many of the most dedicated do, but the majority don't. So we're in a position of having to find a balance between doing big stories that are obvious even though other shows have, and doing other niche stuff that others haven't. Sam, you remember, was Mr. Ohio Coin Scandal, before anyone else.

The other point is that our only goal is not necessarily to cover the most stories. Covering lots of news is one goal. And frankly, I think we cover more breadth of news and culture than probably any other show.

West Wing was solid.

The Jimmy Smitts character gave an excellent rendition of what's right with "theology free" science in education and what's wrong with intelligent design. I felt the issue was fairly well dispensed with as a reasonable alternative to evolution, evolution's warts and all.

He also modeled courageous, honest and ethically driven campaigning when confronted with difficult issues. Let's hope the American people learn from such useful modeling and look for it in their real world candidates.

Janeane's character offered a pragmatic approach to parsing words around the topic of intelligent design while keeping her candidate's rhetoric based in evolution, parsed so as to take advantage of the appeal this theory holds for religious voters.

While this advice reflects the obvious intellect of her character by offering the strongest likelihood of attracting the most voters, the candidate chose to take a more courageous stand and state specifically that there is no place for intelligent design theory in the class room.

He pointed out the leap of faith which undergirds intelligent design and clearly elaborated the sound traditional American democratic reasoning for his conlusion that it not be taught along side evolution theory.

Janeane's a star. A beautiful and talented woman. She gave a solid performance.

If we have to suffer along without her, at least it's to a good purpose.

Miller's lying. Pleading the 5th won't cover her so she's pulling a Reagan #...

She's on they're payroll.

Earl Caldwell's case was different then the bull she's trying to sell to the public. And the court knows it. That's why she did time. Shield laws are supposed to protect whistleblowers not criminals.

On one hand, we could just do a 3-hour show that mirrors Maddow's format.

emotional resonance is critical...that's why comedians are essential...they are the masters of that game...it's the perfect skillset...don't let any of these guys make you doubt that a second...

It's a bonus treat that the analysis and perspectives are so well thought out...people can easily think of comedians as silly and unintelligent...if they themselves lack depth.

I Have A Mansion

Now, I am starting to see things through a different light. I'm thinking I should have paid more attention. I started noticing that I was paying people to protect me and my lifestyle, but the only thing they were doing is increasing their own. They have taken me to the cleaners while I provide their wealth. I am thinking it may be time for me to look into downsizing. I need to step in and protect my inheritance before it is all gone. I think it may be time for me to fire some people.

Yes, I have a mansion. I never even seen it. I pay people to run things, and let them live in my mansion. I also provide all of the basics for these people. Lately I have been very displeased with these people whom I pay well. They have been lying and stealing from me, so I am looking into replacing them.

But what I'm sayin is that we're working with other orgs to do this at a multi-liberal-org level. So it's not just AAR that has access too it. But other orgs/shows/bloggers/content producers. And then, it would be available not just to us (although your AAR-centric slant is appealing) but to anyone who has a local liberal radio show anywhere in the coutry, or has a blog, wants to bring facts to arguments with friends, etc. While on one hand I care about only MR, ont he other hand I want to tear those fuckers down by giving the most amount of people the most amount of access to truth.

Cause that's how we really do it, isn't it?

Repubs only have support because they're so good at spin, and about pretending and lying...convincing people that they represent them when they don't.

So, the antedote to that is by spreading true information as much as possible. Online, on-air, wherever.

Internal AAR one is small fry. I'm talking much bigger. If we're gunna beg for the resources to do it...might as well do it right.

No?

The right owns the media.

AAR, PBS, Pacifica, does not have the reach.

Finally everyone saw with their own eyes.

It took a "natural disaster" to unmask the administration and the right wing bullshit artist for who they are - lying murderous fucking bastards.

At the very least they should all go to prison.

I think we're at the highest cost per capita for health care and 14th in quality or something like that...privatization?...bullshit...the top countries are all socialist

Posted by: Nobody at October 16, 2005 11:20 PM

Alot of health care professional will bill the insurance companies for procedures that never took place.

They do that a lot to people that could not wait any longer for their appointment.

the Health care people just write up a bill as if the person was seen.

when in realitiy they left because the waited two hours to be seen and ran out of money to pay the parking garage with.

Posted by: JOSH at October 16, 2005 11:23 PM

actually I do...they run you from one program to the next trying to figure out how to collect the fed funds while doing absolutely nothing and half the time it's glorified babysitting and social darwinism at it's worst...

my youngest son is painfully shy...can't stand crowds so he's in a "special needs" class...he'd be years behind if we weren't schooling him at home when we can...fuck...in one school they locked him in a little "jail" for refusing to do his work...and this is by a phd...

When I was a kid they didn't have advanced classes and the only special ed teacher was working with downs syndrome kids and one very pretty girl one crutches...This was my extra class...it was a great experience...learning what humanity really meant.

I have some very different ideas about schooling.

Posted by: Nobody at October 16, 2005 11:31 PM

Thank You Josh...

Thank you and all the members of AAR for your efforts.

If it were not for this station all we would have is Pacifica.

NPR and PBS are trying to prevent themselves from being privatized. As a result they cannot afford to be too critical. That's why they maintain a veneer of balance and impartiality. They're tethered...

Sorry to hear that.

I think about that when they discuss Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid "reform".

Many think it's only for seniors...

I really worry about how the mentally and physically handicapped and disabled are going to be cared for..

I can't imagine what the streets of America's city's would look like if the right had their way and dismantled those programs.

Jonathan Kozol -

"The 600,000 people who live [in the South Bronx of New York City] and the 430,000 people who live in Washington Heights and Harlem, which are separated from the South Bronx by a narrow river, make up one of the largest racially segregated concentrations of poor people in our nation.

What is it like for children to grow up here? What do they think the world has done to them? Do they believe that they are being shunned or hidden by society? If so, do they think that they deserve this? What is it that enables some of them to pray? When they pray, what do they say to God?"

The White House is bracing itself for the possible indictment of senior officials as Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor, prepares to wrap up his two-year inquiry into the leaking of a covert CIA agent's name.

Further details about the role of White House officials were underlined in a report in the New York Times on Sunday.

Judith Miller, the reporter released from jail after 85 days after she agreed to testify before a grand jury, gave an account of her conversations with Scooter Libby, chief of staff to Dick Cheney, vice-president. She also admitted that Mr Fitzgerald had asked whether Mr Cheney had personally authorised Mr Libby to speak.

In a more ominous sign, Ms Miller said Mr Fitzgerald's questions went beyond the leaking of the CIA name to probe the administration's selective leaking of intelligence information ahead of the Iraq war. During the hearing, she said he repeatedly asked how Mr Libby handled classified information and showed her some documents.

“[They] seemed familiar, and that they might be excerpts from the National Intelligence Estimate of Iraq's weapons. Mr Fitzgerald asked whether Mr Libby had shown any of the documents to me. I thought I remembered him at one point reading from a piece of paper he pulled from his pocket,” she wrote.

George Bush has given up.

We should have seen this coming. During the first debate of the fall 2004 campaign, a weary and frustrated Bush repeatedly referred to how the presidency had proven to be a difficult job for him. Again and again, the commander-in-chief responded to questions about the missteps, mistakes and misdeeds of his first term by pleading that, "It's hard work."

The guy was clearly overwhelmed a year ago. So it can't really come as much of surprise that he has thrown in the towel.

The evidence of his surrender is all around. The man who spent years denying global warming is now borrowing talking points from Jimmy Carter to call for energy conservation. He can't even convince himself -- let alone anyone else -- that the "mission-accomplished" occupation of Iraq is functional, let alone a success story. He has essentially abandoned his primary domestic-policy initiative for 2005, admitting during a Rose Garden press conference that there is a "diminished appetite" for his scheme to privatize Social Security. And when it came to what is arguably the most important appointment of his presidency -- the selection of a replacement for the critical "swing" justice on the U.S. Supreme Court – he didn't even try.

In defending his selection of his attorney, Harriet Miers, to succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Bush claimed that, "I picked the best person I could find."

He obviously did not look very hard. Maybe that's because the guy who used to tell him who to nominate for judicial openings, Karl Rove, is busy trying to avoid a indictment by a federal grand jury. Maybe it is because Vice President Dick Cheney's office is in crisis, as the veep's chief of staff, "Scooter" Libby, is targeted by the same investigation into who in the White House revealed the identity of an intelligence operative in order to punish the husband of that operative, Ambassador Joe Wilson, for revealing that the administration had warped intelligence in order to make the "case" for invading Iraq.

Illinois Republicans souring on president

By Jeff Zeleny and Rick Pearson, Tribune staff reporters. Tribune national correspondent Jeff Zeleny reported from Washington and Tribune political reporter Rick Pearson reported from Chicago
Published October 16, 2005

Pessimism over the war in Iraq and skepticism about the economy at home have cost President Bush support among the most reliable segments of Illinois Republicans, a Tribune/WGN-TV poll shows, and now nearly 6 out of 10 voters statewide disapprove of his job performance.

The government's tepid response to Hurricane Katrina and a summer-long spike in gasoline prices also have helped drive Bush's job-approval rating down to 33 percent in the state, the lowest point among Illinois surveys involving his administration. A similar poll in May showed Bush's approval rating at 41 percent.

Support for Bush has dropped 14 points in the last year among Republicans, and GOP officials fear that could complicate their efforts in next year's races for Congress and governor. For the first time in his presidency, half the voters in Chicago's Republican-rich collar counties disapprove of Bush's job performance, a departure from last fall when he carried all five suburban counties.

Though Illinois voted Democratic in both of Bush's elections, including handing Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) the state's 21 electoral votes last year, dissatisfaction emerging from traditional Republican strongholds illustrates the challenges confronting the president during his second term.

Money for Nothing

Billions of dollars have disappeared, gone to bribe Iraqis and line contractors’ pockets.

by Philip Giraldi

The United States invaded Iraq with a high-minded mission: destroy dangerous weapons, bring democracy, and trigger a wave of reform across the Middle East. None of these have happened.

When the final page is written on America’s catastrophic imperial venture, one word will dominate the explanation of U.S. failure—corruption. Large-scale and pervasive corruption meant that available resources could not be used to stabilize and secure Iraq in the early days of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), when it was still possible to do so. Continuing corruption meant that the reconstruction of infrastructure never got underway, giving the Iraqi people little incentive to co-operate with the occupation. Ongoing corruption in arms procurement and defense spending means that Baghdad will never control a viable army while the Shi’ite and Kurdish militias will grow stronger and produce a divided Iraq in which constitutional guarantees will be irrelevant.

The American-dominated Coalition Provisional Authority could well prove to be the most corrupt administration in history, almost certainly surpassing the widespread fraud of the much-maligned UN Oil for Food Program. At least $20 billion that belonged to the Iraqi people has been wasted, together with hundreds of millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars. Exactly how many billions of additional dollars were squandered, stolen, given away, or simply lost will never be known because the deliberate decision by the CPA not to meter oil exports means that no one will ever know how much revenue was generated during 2003 and 2004.

Hmmm, the American Conservative

When I got pregnant .. well .. first I felt this fizzy thing happen and I was like .. uh .. Hum !?!? But .. then the appointed day and hour showed and went with no joy .. I knew. Didn't need a test .. just friggin' new .. then my boyfriend bailed... DICK!! .. Now he is a minister .. neat!

Yes, I know the inhumane conditions (to say the least) that chickens are kept in. Read some material about these poultry farms and hog farms, where there are so many chickens there, and they end up rolling around in their own feces.....

And the Mercury levels in fish are ridiculous. And remember, all those "pro-life" GOPers let companies put more Mercury into the water, killing fetuses....

I understand your passion, akaMat. It's like me when I go off on a film I really like (or something I truly detest). I don't hold back....

Comme on voit sur la branche au mois de may la rose,

En sa belle jeunesse, en sa premiere fleur,

Rendre le ciel jaloux de sa vive couleur,

Quand l'Aube de ses pleurs au poinct du jour
l'arrose ;

La grace dans sa feuille, et l'amour se repose,

Embasmant les jardins et les arbres d'odeur ;

I don't eat red meat because of the saturated fat. I love meat and chicken and there is nothing wrong with eating it. What is wrong is the unnatural way they are kept and raised. They say that the grain feed causes the beef to be fattier

I get the impression support for the administration is collapsing and that the administration is falling into chaos.

My guess is they're going to try and find a bright spot in their failed policies and use the passage of the referendum on the constitution in Iraq as an example of their competancy and judgement while neglecting to address the administrations failures and thereby make them worse.

Furthermore my impression is that American's are more concerned about the increased cost of gas & oil to care about what's happening elsewhere.

With fuel prices still generally hovering above $3.00 without any expectation of decreasing anytime soon it will only be a matter of time before money that is normally used to pay for other things as well as savings will be affected. This undoubtedly will negatively affect other area's of the economy.

If this trend continues time may run out for the republicans as Americans may demand a change of their failed economic policies before the 2006 and 2008 elections.

I don't think people are dissing trailers as much as they are Nobby. He blows lots of smoke about his wealth.. like he has enough in a bank account to last him the rest of his life, he owns a place he could rent for 5 to 6 thousand a month, but rents it to a buddy for 12 hundred, oh, and the house is values at 1.2 million and the new one he is building will be larger, supposedly meaning worth more... It goes on and on. He bs's waaayyy too much.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 17, 2005 12:58 AM

uhhh...that's not exactly wealth...hell Mat's buying a place that costs a 1/4 mill...and if you build you own the expense isn't near as high as buying it premade...

construction pays 25-50 and hour...and that's worknig for someone else...I've been doing it for 20 years you'd think that I'd have something built up wouldn't you?

I don't like to go out...I don't spend much on haircuts...I just like to build and to create...my first biz sold out at an amazing 75k...that was a little electronics shop...sold car stereos and cbs and such...I lived on that money for about 5 years while I was doing other things...most of which were for pure enjoyment

This isn't wealth...it's just a busy life...I'm nowhere near that top 1% and have no need of being...I have enough to live the rest of my life without working...(which btw is called retiring which I'm doing because I've worked very hard and torn the hell out of my body to get what I have) because I bought property...built on it and resold it...it's not magic...and I really prefer to live simply...I don't like tv...I don't go out to eat...I don't travel much...I like watching my garden grow...that's it...not much expense and a VERY satisfying lifestyle...

and btw...check the rents on 6 bdr houses with a full shop and garage and various other outbuildings all of which were built with my own hands...if you had any idea of how much it costs to build a house yourself you would shit...

a 3 bdr house that sells for a 1/4 mill is only about 30k in materials you fucking retarded twit. A good truck is 65k now days...wtf are you thinking?

Party over country. You can hear it in Miller's accountings of her conversations with Libby; you can hear the "crimes aren't crimes if they're done for the sake of politics" meme from pundits like Chris Matthews and William Kristol; you can hear it everywhere in Washington, for that matter. Lying about sex had many of these same pundits foaming and frothing at the outrage of it all; compromising our intelligence assets against weapons of mass destruction, at the very same time the government is warning us to stock up on duct tape and watch out for swarthy bearded types holding glow-in-the-dark suitcases, is considered too shallow a crime to pursue -- if a Republican does it.

There's something beyond mere politics in all of this. Politics, one would hope, is not sufficient reason to damage the country. This is different. This is the cult of power, and of corruption, that is not just defended, but celebrated by pundits, by journalists, and by politicians alike.

The Republican pundit machine wails, and wags their fingers, and is shocked by the investigations, and depositions, and prosecutions, and calls it the "criminalization of politics".

Most of the rest of us call it crime, disguised as politics.

Crime, disguised as politics, and defended by crooks, cowards, and blowhards.

These are the Movement Republicans of Fox News, whose talking points are set over their cups of coffee in accordance to whatever the Bush-focused needs of the day prove to be. Deficits are bad, then deficits are good. Espionage against America is bad, except when it's no big deal. States' rights, but never mind. Drugs are bad, except when Rush does it. The Katrina response was fantastic! Iraq is going well! The economy, booming! Cronyism is good!

Blah, blah, blah. Punditry with the predictable pattern and spray of automatic lawn sprinklers. If Iraq has turned into the much-predicted fiasco most observers expected it would, it's because liberals didn't believe hard enough. If the economy is going to hell, it's the fault of the damn American middle class, which needs to collectively get off its quivering, jobless ass and buy a few hundred thousand new cars. And if a Republican commits a crime, it's the Democrats fault for politicizing it.

Only a jackass of the caliber of a Fox News pundit could write an entire column in response to the scandal after scandal after scandal dogging every significant figure in the Republican leadership, and come to the conclusion that the problem was that Democrats were finding too many scandals and should just shut up.

Everyone is concentrating on procecutor Fitzgerald's very latest activities and questions. Everyone is trying to judge whether there will be indictments... or not... from the activities of and witnesses before the grand juy within the last month. Well... the leak broke with Robert Novak. Word is, he testified way... way back.

Fitzgerald might have had enough for indictments nearly a year ago and he's just tying up loose ends.

What's this mean? Indictments might be more far reaching than anyone expects. Fitzgerald might indict people we've long forgot about in addition to Libby and Rove. Fitzgerald might well name Bush and or Cheney as unindicted co-conspirators.

Just because we're watching Fitzgerald polish the floor... don't forget the very real possibility that he's already swept and mopped it.

Bush Hails Iraq Vote on New Constitution

By PETE YOST
The Associated Press
Monday, October 17, 2005; 9:23 AM

WASHINGTON -- After months of difficult negotiations on a proposed constitution in Iraq, President Bush welcomed increased turnout and less violence that accompanied the weekend referendum.

Iraq's constitution seemed assured of passage, despite strong opposition from Sunni Arabs who voted in surprisingly high numbers in an effort to stop it. The constitution's apparent victory was muted, though, by the prospect that the result might divide the country further.

The balloting "is in stark contrast to the attitude, the philosophy and strategy of al-Qaida and its terrorist friends and killers," Bush said Sunday.

US air strikes kill 70 in Iraqi rebel hotbed

October 17 2005 at 06:57AM

American fighter jets and attack helicopters killed about 70 suspected militants in a series of air strikes in and near the western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Sunday, according to a military statement in Baghdad on Monday.

The statement said 20 men were killed when a US aircraft dropped a precision-guided bomb on a group of militants who were allegedly attempting to place a roadside bomb east of Ramadi.

About 50 other suspected insurgents were killed in a series of clashes around the city involving helicopter gunships, F-18 fighters and ground troops.

DeLay campaign war chest rises to $1.2M

That Tom DeLay is rollin in money..

God Bless the USA..

Where else can you be indicted and then become a millionaire..???

===================================================

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- Cash in the campaign coffers of Rep. Tom DeLay rose to $1.2 million over the past three months, although much of the money came before the former majority leader was indicted in Texas.

DeLay raised about $920,000 in the three months that began July 1 and ended Sept. 30 in anticipation of a March primary race. His Democratic challenger in the November election is expected to be former Rep. Nick Lampson, who lost his seat in 2004 after he was forced to run in a new district under a redistricting plan pushed by DeLay.

Aide Shannon Flaherty said Sunday that the fundraising set a new record for DeLay. His previous three-month top haul was $800,000, she said.

Early vote count points to Iraq constitution win

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) -- Iraqi election officials slowly counted up to 10 million ballots from Saturday's referendum, with partial results pointing to a clear win for the new constitution.

Washington hopes the constitution will help establish Iraq as a stable democracy able to do without U.S. troops.

Officials said as many as 63 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in Saturday's election, above the 58 percent seen in January, when many Sunnis boycotted the first elections after the fall of Saddam Hussein, who is a Sunni.

Poll officials in Baghdad said they were still re-counting ballots which had been trucked to the capital under heavy security from polling stations around the country.

Adel Alami, a senior official with the electoral commission, said the process was moving forward but certified results could be days away. "It will last for several days until the results are collected from all provinces," he told Reuters.

Is ‘Commander in Chief’ warmup for Hillary's White House run?

Monday, October 17, 2005 By FRAZIER MOORE AP Television Writer

NEW YORK - ABC’s “Commander in Chief” would seem to be a pretty straightforward drama.

The president dies. The vice president (played by Geena Davis) succeeds him in the Oval Office. And, omigosh, she’s a woman!

But there’s more going on here, suspicious minds are thinking: “Commander in Chief” isn’t just this fall’s most-watched new series — it’s a sinister scheme by Hollywood lefties to hype Hillary Clinton for the White House.

Could “Commander in Chief” (9 p.m. EDT Tuesdays) really be a weekly infomercial for Hillary?

“Keeping with the modern liberal tradition of subliminal socialist indoctrination (through U.S. television), ‘Commander in Chief’ seeks to accomplish more than prime-time entertainment,” warned a writer named J.B. Williams on the National Ledger Web site, while the blogger Colossus pronounced the show “a nefarious plot to advance the notion of a Hillary Clinton presidency.”

A warmup act for Hillary? Best-selling feminist author Naomi Wolf applauds it. In London’s The Guardian, she hailed “Commander in Chief” as not only well-timed for Clinton’s widely anticipated 2008 run, but also as “truly addictive, political pornography.”

Did “Commander in Chief” creator Rod Lurie really set out to be Hillary’s advance man?

“This is not a You-Go-Hillary show, this is a You-Go-Girl show,” Lurie said last week. “I just want to see women in the process, whether they be Democrats or Republicans or Independents. If there’s any social agenda to the show, it’s to be enthusiastic about the idea of a woman president — and an Independent president. She’s an Independent, which is sort of a big deal.”

Majority Report Alert...!

(If Fitz is as smart as I think That means he is going to hand out the indictment BEFORE Wednesday. So bush Media machine will be cought off guard. He did it again just like last week he makes Bush 'do that stupid 'big Iraq speech' distraction.

Whatever it is, Fitz is going to announce it so he can extract maximum legal impact. Probably pulling a one-two punch like Earle in Texas.

WONKETTE EXCLUSIVE: Fitzgerald Indictments to Come Wednesday?

Wednesday. We hear that a White House source says that Patrick Fitzgerald drops whatever bombs he has and the White House ducks for cover on Wednesday. We admit, however, don't know if the specificity of the date stems from actual knowledge or perverse wishful thinking. In any case, we're crossing our fingers that George Bush survives being the world's first living brain donor.

If your crews are half as smart as I think, they would already replace Rove so the entire thing will run smoothly to protect the inner core.

But instead, thankfully, the entire crews are too stupid. They keep doing the same thing and hoping to get different results.

Here are my predictions, regardless who gets the indictment:

- BIG media distraction. (probably, some sort of big crime or fake terror alert. Real dead people start showing on screen)

- Manufactured international conflict. (with China and Russia probably will fail, but something will happen with smaller countries. )

- Pentagon will announce another "major" attack in western area. Yet another #2 is captured. Nobody cares and everybody yawns.

- Since all the big guys are indicted/under investigation, they can't show up on TV to spin. (Condi, Cheney, Hughes,) That mean GOP are stuck with Ken melman, Santorum, McCainn, and other hack senators to spin. ... Democrats get to slamm all those dumbfucks senators. down 5% poll for each those senators. Santorum is a goner.

- Bush lost Waposh. NYTimes is ineffective since they are so tainted. Medium paper will go against Bush. Smaller one even harsher.

- I just hope AAR is ready instead of showing up unprepared again.

All The News The GOP Sees Fit To Print

Daniel Okrent says the paper failed in its WMD coverage prior to the war. Everybody is at fault and it's wrong to single anybody out in particular and the way to put this behind them is to finally report the truth. Great.

Here's the problem. Like the Bush administration, they seem to think that "taking responsibility" means acting as if it was some vague and ephemeral "somebody" who committed the act and then going on as if nothing happened. These are children's ethics.

The only way journalists will understand that repeatedly publishing and hyping incorrect information (particularly disinformation) is unacceptable is if they will pay a price for doing so. That's what grown-ups expect when they screw up. And the only way the public can be assured that The New York Times cares about its credibility is if it holds the people who made these massive errors responsible.

VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Iraqis: Civilians Killed in U.S. Bombing - AP - 30 minutes ago
BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. warplanes and helicopters bombed two western villages, killing an estimated 70 militants near a site where five American soldiers died in a weekend roadside blast, the military said Monday. Residents said at least 39 of the dead were civilians.
Posted by: ¹³Ъзй at October 17, 2005 11:30 AM
Well women in Iraq get to vail themselves again.
SO nice to have freedom isn't it.
BAH!
Posted by: akaMAT at October 17, 2005 11:33 AM
Nobody is satisfied with a referendum that is establishing a constitution of division and oppression of women. All of the women's groups are against this constitution, but unfortunately, a big majority is voting yes, because they are under the impression that a vote yes will lead to more secure times in Iraq, and it's not just something that they are assuming, but they were told this over and over again by the puppet government that has been selected by the Americans and also by the occupying forces, that a vote yes is a yes for democracy. It is yes for security, and it’s yes for better times to come. So, most of those who are putting the ballot as yes, they are under the – they are alluded into a vote that they think will bring some security into the country, but nobody, absolutely nobody, is satisfied with a constitution of dividing Iraqi people upon ethnic lines, upon religious lines and also a constitution of turning us women into second-rate citizens.
And you know what, everybody is terrorized because the civil war has already started, and there is no mention in it in Condoleezza Rice's very optimistic speech. She says that democracy is being achieved, while in Iraq, all we witness is that we have no electricity, we have no security, the civil war has started, and a hideous way of democracy has been imposed on us, a democracy that has put Mullahs, ethnic bigot rulers, I mean, ethnic heads and tribal heads as representatives of Iraqi people. We are outraged by a constitution that gives legality to these tribal and ethnic heads and religious heads, and has turned Iraq into an Islamic country. Everybody is outraged, but if we reached the vote yes, it's only because people are under the impression that the vote yes will lead us to more secure times.
This is the publicity that they have put all over the media, and women have already been turned into second rate citizens by this constitution. I think next time I’m in Iraq, I'll have to cover up. I will be forced to veil. I will be forced to wear black, and there is no other way of looking at it.
PANTOS of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs are being censored — to outlaw the word DWARF.
A shocked village drama group sent off for a script and found Dopey and his pals — played by kids — had to be called “gnomes” instead.
Ray Lionet, 73, of the Coxheath Players in Kent, said the ban was to avoid offending short people. He said: “It’s madness.”
»Those strategies are being shaped absent any real knowledge of what Fitzgerald might do before the grand jury's scheduled dissolution on Oct. 28. "If he played his cards any closer to the vest, they'd be in his underwear," says a lawyer who is a friend of the White House. But Fitzgerald's intentions aren't the only mystery. Another character in the drama remains unnamed: the original source for columnist Robert Novak, who wrote the first piece naming Plame. Fitzgerald, says a lawyer who's involved in the case, "knows who it is—and it's not someone at the White House."
Good morning, good morning
Good morning, good morning
Good morning ah
Nothing to do to save his life call his wife in
Nothing to say but what a day how's your boy been
Nothing to do it's up to you
I've got nothing to say but it's OK
Good morning, good morning
Good morning ah
Going to work don't want to go feeling low down
Heading for home you start to roam then you're in
town
Everybody knows there's nothing doing
Everything is closed it's like a ruin
Everyone you see is half asleep
And you're on your own you're in the street
After a while you start to smile now you feel cool
Then you decide to take a walk by the old school
Nothing is changed it's still the same
I've got nothing to say but it's OK
Good morning, good morning
Good morning ah
People running round it's five o'clock
Everywhere in town is getting dark
Everyone you see is full of life
It's time for tea and meet the wife
Somebody needs to know the time, glad that I'm
here
Watching the skirts you start to flirt now you're
in gear
Go to a show you hope she goes
I've got nothing to say but it's OK
Good morning, good morning, good
Good morning, good morning, good
Good morning, good morning, good
Good morning, good morning, good
In today's Washington Post, a former colleague of Miller's revealed that he refused to work with her.
Craig Pyres - who now works with the Los Angeles Times - wrote a memo to his editors five years ago and asked that his byline not appear on one piece. Pyres wrote "I do not trust her work, her judgment, or her conduct. She is an advocate, and her actions threaten the integrity of the enterprise, and of everyone who works with her.... She has turned in a draft of a story of a collective enterprise that is little more than dictation from government sources over several days, filled with unproven assertions and factual inaccuracies."
Questions are also being raised about Miller's relationship not just with Libby but with the Pentagon.
How can you tell CondiLiar is lying?
(When her lips are moving?)
Yes, CondiLiar lies w/an entrenched fixity like cross-ties lie under railroad tracks, but perhaps it's a good idea to ask yourself why?
Is she stupid?
No.
I mean, yes, of course she's stupid on a *judgment* scale -- the entire administration is stuck on stupid in that sense.
But no, CondiLiar is not stupid in a "how'm'I-gonna-get-out-in-front-of-the-PR-story-and-thereby-preemptively-justify-my-wrongdoing-and-so-hopefully-salvage-my-party-over-country-ass" perspective.
Possible indictments tend to focus the mind that way.
It is the human form of the Darwinian drama: Survival of the Self-Preservationist.
(Everyone's doin' it. It's all the rage.)
Which begs the question: Whence comes this antiquarian "proximate-cause" gem?
--------
CondiLiar Quote:
"The fact of the matter [always a strong indicator of a coming lie: the need to preemptively establish a false-choice premise as a "fact" -- ed. note] is that when we were attacked on September 11, we had a choice to make."
"We could decide that the proximate cause was al Qaeda and the people who flew those planes into buildings and, therefore, we would go after al Qaeda ..."
"or we could [recklessly, immorally, deceitfully, and counterproductively stupidly -- ed. note] take a bolder approach."
-----------
So why would CondiLiar say this?
Especially now?
Even she is not
So why would CondiLiar say this?
Especially now?
Even she is not so stupid of judgment as to not realize the whole al-Qaeda/Saddam/9/11/Niger-yellowcake bogus-connection-deception has long been discredited as the fabrication of expedient bullshit artists willing to tell "noble lies" to get their war on.
So why now? Why again?
Well, what would you do if you were beginning to feel cornered and were a member in good standing of the 8-person WHIG (White House Iraq Group) whose entire reason for being was:
To turn WMD intel into marketing pretzels for our man-child-in-chief to choke on and have every Republican flak -- in government and out (but on the payroll!) -- deceive the country into an unprovoked and unnecessary war of choice in Iraq -- that we are presently losing?
And invade Iraq not b/c Iraq was ever a threat to the United States -- it was not and the Bush Administration knew it at the time -- but b/c Bush thought (or was persuaded; same thing, ulimately) that it'd be a swell idea to invade Iraq for reasons he won't explain?
And now we're losing in Iraq, despite putting a "democracy paint-job" on things by allowing "elections" that do absolutely fuck-all-nothing to stem the violence and absolute absence of security in Iraq (sort of like allowing passengers on the sinking Titanic to vote).
So.
Were you CondiLiar, you might start explaining ahead of possible indictments -- yours perhaps?; ah, preemption; it's all the rage! -- how and why you were (in your mind; sell it baby, sell it!) "justified" in taking such "bolder" action.
Everyone vividly remembers CondiLiar's "in the form of a mushroom cloud" bed-wetting performances, of course.
And it's not lost on most that CondiLiar was still touting the supposed "attempts" by Iraq to get yellowcake from Niger long, long, loooong after those "attempts", too, had
See, the thing about the plot-lines of "The West Wing" is....
it's easy for Democrats to win on that show, when Democratic writers are writing the "rules".
Real world...a strongly religious Dem running against an agnostic Republican, wouldn't be making the argument that Smits' character did...the Republican would and the Dem would be playing both sides and winning neither.
But it doesn't matter anyway, the show has "jumped the shark" and unless they smarten up and let "Vinick" (Alan Alda) win....it's wrapped up after this season.
Everyone vividly remembers CondiLiar's "in the form of a mushroom cloud" bed-wetting performances, of course.
And it's not lost on most that CondiLiar was still touting the supposed "attempts" by Iraq to get yellowcake from Niger long, long, loooong after those "attempts", too, had been irrefutably discredited.
CondiLiar, like most of the admininstration, is up to her eyeballs in taking the country to war on nothing more than the want-to of a man-child-in-chief and the prefabricated bullshit of confidence men and their accomplices and useful idiots like, say, Tom Friedman.
And thus, we get CondiLiar's subtextual premise -- i.e. the traitorous Ahmed Chalabi defense: "we were heroes in error" -- which, if accepted, preemptively justifies the rationales for *all other* administration wrongdoing and bad faith and lying, and hence, is the sought-for root of an unwarranted tree of forgiveness.
In a sense, it is reassuring to see CondiLiar lying at such a time.
To see that she feels the *need* to lie (yet again) about the "bolder approach" rationale and justify her long-continuing efforts to discredit Joe Wilson and to invoke the long discredited charge (al Qaeda/Saddam/Iraq/yellowcake) and thus willingly allow herself to be ridiculed for the greater good (in her mind) of explaining herself *before* the curtain drops.
CondiLiar's little piroutte w/"bolder action" is sorta like Butch and Sundance's harried looks over their shoulder up on that high bluff plateau, looking anxiously down below at the Fitzgerald posse formed to capture 'em, hot on their heels, never far off the track, ready to corner 'em, and CondiLiar is as much as sayin':
"Who the fuck ARE those guys?"
They're you're worst nightmare, CondiLiar:
That's who.
B/c ultimately, what CondiLiar's little kabuki dance w/"bolder action" suggests -- strongly -- is that Traitorgate is about to blow wide-fucking-open here real fucking quick-like.
What an Orwellian crock!
• WHO: Bird flu expected to spread from Asia
I've had that Asian Bird Flu.
It's pretty bad, man.
It starts out in your throat. You know when you first get it. Then it moves to the sinuses, then finally down into your lungs where it gets evil.
All I can say, is the worse part...is when you start to feel the despair of low oxygen.
It's a lot like fighting an electrical fire, where that burnt insulation sucks in...then stays.
Senator: Charges possible over Williams contract
By Greg Toppo, USA TODAY
Mon Oct 17, 6:42 AM ET
The Education Department has acknowledged that it is working with the U.S. attorney's office in Washington to investigate the Bush administration's contract with commentator Armstrong Williams. That suggests civil or criminal charges could be filed, according to Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.
"The inspector general wouldn't refer this to the U.S. attorney unless there was evidence of misconduct that requires further investigating," Dan Katz, Lautenberg's chief counsel, told the Associated Press.
Friday, Lautenberg publicly released a letter from Education Department Inspector General John Higgins disclosing the referral.
Williams told USA TODAY on Friday that he has been cooperating with the Justice Department's attorneys since July. He said he expects to pay back some of the money because he did not fulfill the government contract, which called for him to promote President Bush's No Child Left Behind education law and persuade others to do the same.
I mashed my one of my toes into a chair.
It swelled up. Turned black.
It's fine now though.
Y'know when you wonder whether something's broken?
I could bend it, but every once in awhile...it was like...ah. I...I think it's broken. no. Wait. I can bend it. It's cool.
I was on one of these Military Sealift vessels once...
They got these nurse combination corpsman (not really doctor) type people on there...
And these guys are actually pretty smart most of the time. But I've seen times where somebody breaks a finger. And I mean broken, right?
Like mashed inbetween a pump casing on chainfall and some foundation bolt or something...
And I've seen these employees go...well...
It's the mission of the boat, man. We can't go in.
And the corpsman just feels miserable, because he's scared the employee's going to lose the finger.
Ha, ha, ha. Fucking Navy, man.
I swear. If it was me. I'd be like...you fuckin' take the logs Captain. Fuck off. Put me on bread and water. Your family is going to die when I get home. In fact...I'm going to fire bomb the company's headquarters unless you get me ashore.
Posted by: -B at October 17, 2005 1:45 PM
Unfortunately, I think that's why my ships never break.
I'm in the habit of terrorizing people.
Viggo says...things seem to run smoothly when he's in charge. Yea. I like a director like that.
I'd get fucked up right now, but it's a Monday.
Not that's stopped me before...
But it seems like a good day to take care of personal business before Wilma comes ashore.
Chavez "Should Have Been Killed A Long Time Ago"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
last nights (8/24) show with Former CIA analyst Wayne Simmons
Simmons offered this on Chavez: "We have in our midst a college-educated, militarily-trained, lethal, murderer, treacherous lech who has... threatened not only the United States and the west but armed himself with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia which, as you know, is the oldest, most well-trained terrorist organization in Latin America."
Colmes: "Should we assassinate him?"
Simmons: If a stray bullet from a hunter in Kentucky should find its way between this guy's eyes, no American should lose any sleep over it.
Colmes asked if, as a Chrisitian nation, assassinating another country's leader would be the Christian thing to do.
"Alan, if I'd had the opportunity to assassinate Hitler or Mussolini, I would have done it. This situation is no different."
Colmes: Chavez is a Hitler?
Hannity interrupted to defend Simmons. "He's saying he is." Turning to Simmons, Hannity said, "You're saying he's a murderer."
____________
Haven't any idea what you're talking about, L@L.
Don't even know -- can guess I suppose -- what word you might be thinking of?
Do you mean "lap dance" 'stead a "kabuki"?
If so, it didn't occur to me until you pointed it out, but I wouldn't have selected it anyway.
What was wanted, I thought, perhaps selfishly, but then I did write it, was something that suggested a highly stylized and self-conscious artifice.
Hence, much more sophisticated (or else everybody would understand it for what it was, right?) than the overt directness of a clumsy splittail reference.
Now, you can make all sorts of arguments about why I chose the wrong word, and that's OK.
But look, I say what I mean. Right, wrong, indifferent. I thought that was obvious.
I give fuck-all about being PC.
By the same token, I also don't try to be gratuitously un-PC like some reactionary.
Point is: PC-ness don't enter the equation. It ain't a concern for or against.
I strive for clarity and precision.
If a little elegant turn of phrase finds a home here and there, so much the better.
If not, well, hell, we all strike out.
I guess what I object to most is the curious presumption of yours, especially after all of my posts that you have openly acknowledged reading heretofore, that you'd suspect I gave even passing notice to PC concerns.
And then to draw from that erroneous presumption the (unfounded) inference that I am "dissembling the dissembler"?
I am struck dumb.
It's like you have a handle on alla the facts but still draw alla the wrong conclusions.
