STICK A FORK IN 'EM

Raw Story:

Special Prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald has asked the grand jury investigating the outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson to indict Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby and Bush's Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, lawyers close to the investigation tell RAW STORY.

Fitzgerald has also asked the jury to indict Libby on a second charge: knowingly outing a covert operative, the lawyers said. They said the prosecutor believes that Libby violated a 1982 law that made it illegal to unmask an undercover CIA agent.

If no action is taken today, it will take place on Friday, these sources said.

I.Scooter Libby, the chief of staff of Vice President Richard Cheney, and chief presidential advisor, Karl Rove are expected to be named in indcitments this morning by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.

Others are to be named as well, these source said. According to U.S. officials close to the case an bill of indiictment has been in existence before October 17 which named five people. Various names have surfaced such a National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, yet only one source would confirm that Hadley was on the list. Hadley could not be reached for comment.

But letters from Fitzgerald, notifying various White House officiials that they are targets of the invstigation, went out late last week, a former senior U.S. intelligence official said.

Senator who brought us "Arabs are ragheads" and "It's hard to live in Washington with all these black people" follows up with "If you're a woman and lose your job to outsourcing, stay home and make babies."

WASHINGTON — Sen. Conrad Burns' off-the-cuff remarks have gotten him in trouble in the past.

He once called Arabs "rag heads," later apologizing for the comment. Another time, the Montana Republican commented on how challenging it is to live with so many blacks in Washington.

Now, two Northwest Airlines flight attendants say Burns offended them recently when he told one of the women she could stay at home and be a mother if she lost her job to outsourcing.

"He's still living in the '50s," said Karen McElvaney, who is raising two young children in Atlanta while working for Northwest. "If I could stay home, I certainly would love to stay with my kids."

Burns, who is up for re-election next year, said Tuesday morning he did not recall the conversation. He later said through a spokesman that he remembered speaking to the flight attendants but never told one she could stay home with her children.

McElvaney said she approached the lawmaker with her concerns about outsourcing during a Sept. 25 flight from Great Falls to Minneapolis. When McElvaney asked what she would do if she lost her job, Burns replied she

Before she ran off, Condi threw a tantrum in Ottawa.

...she dismissed the contentious softwood lumber issue as "a trade dispute," insisting that it should be settled through further negotiations.

Rice bristled when asked how the U.S. could be trusted when it doesn't live up to its international agreements.

"Well, I think the word of the United States has been as good as gold in its international dealings and its agreements," she snapped.

Rather touchy, Ms Rice.. and a lot of gall to saying you respect international agreements when you have several examples from your own press this morning which state otherwise.

Source: No announcement in CIA leak probe today

Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald arrives at the courthouse in Washington today.
Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald is not expected to make a public announcement today about the CIA leak investigation, a source with knowledge of the investigation tells CNN. Experts say it's possible the grand jury still may consider indictments and, if it votes to return one or more, the indictments could remain under seal and be made public later.

City in the Clouds

In 1706, Paul Lucas, traveling in southwest Turkey on a mission for the court of Louis XIV, came upon the mountaintop ruins of Sagalassos. The first Westerner to see the site, Lucas wrote that he seemed to be confronted with remains of several cities inhabited by fairies. Later, during the mid-nineteenth century, William Hamilton described it as the best preserved ancient city he had ever seen. Toward the end of that century, Sagalassos and its theater became famous among students of classical antiquity. Yet large scale excavations along the west coast at sites like Ephesos and Pergamon, attracted all the attention. Gradually Sagalassos was forgotten...until a British-Belgian team led by Stephen Mitchell started surveying the site in 1985.

Astros First Series Team In Decades Without Black Player

HOUSTON -- It's their first trip to the World Series. But the Houston Astros are making a kind of history that is making some people in and around the baseball world somewhat uncomfortable.

Let's put it this way: the 'Stros have no Bros.

They are the first World Series team in more than 50 years with a roster that doesn't include a single black player. Two blacks played for the team earlier this season, but aren't with them now.

The last World Series team without a black player was the 1953 New York Yankees, a team that didn't have its first black player until eight years after Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier in 1947.

Former Astro Joe Morgan , a Hall of Famer, is troubled by what he sees. His old team, the Houston Astros, is down 3-0 to the Chicago White Sox, but it's not their lineup that concerns Morgan. It's their makeup.

Morgan said the lack of black players is a predicament and a challenge for Major League Baseball. While more players from around the world are making it to the majors -- Japan, Korea, for example -- the number of blacks is declining.

Morgan, now a commentator on ESPN, said he's noticed the lack of black representation on the Houston ballclub. But he noted that there are at least a couple of other teams in the major leagues who don't have a single black player this year. And it's part of a growing problem in baseball. Black players made up fewer than 9 percent of big league rosters this season.

He said, "It's a daunting task to get African-American kids into baseball, and I don't see the trend changing."

Astros general manager Tim Purpura said that he agrees it is a problem, but that the pool of black players just isn’t there.

"As baseball becomes more college-oriented in its draft, there aren't a lot of players to pick,” Purpura said. "The African-American athletes are going into other sports," he said.

The most recent survey by the NCAA, taken during the 2003-04 season, showed that only 6 percent of Division I baseball players were black. Half of the men's basketball players were black, as were 44 percent of football playe

Many legal experts and lawyers not involved in the case had expected the grand jury to vote on an indictment Wednesday -- if the investigation is going to result in indictments -- and that the outcome would be announced publicly.

The grand jury's term is set to expire Friday unless Fitzgerald requests an extension.

Several experts told CNN it is possible the grand jury on Wednesday still could consider the question of indictments and if it votes to return one or more, the indictments could remain under seal and made public later.

These experts also said it is possible the grand jury could consider indictments later this week, or that no charges will be brought.

Posted by: muck4doo at October 26, 2005 11:57 AM

I'm wondering if Fitzgerald is polling the jurers to see if he has enough votes to get indictments, but so far he doesn't have the support he needs.

Maybe that is why this whole process is dragging out. If that's the case then the evidence must be awfully thin.

Journal: Focus is on on Cheney's office in leak probe
RAW STORY

WASHINGTON -- With the grand jury in the CIA leak investigation expected to vote soon to bring charges against White House officials, the two-year probe appears to be focused on the office of Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the chief architects and defenders of the administration's Iraq war policy, The Wall Street Journal reported on its (paid-restricted) website 11:37 AM ET Wednesday.

#
Administration officials were bracing for the likelihood that Mr. Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby, who is known to have talked at least three times with New York Times reporter Judith Miller about the Central Intelligence Agency operative whose identity was leaked, would be indicted, according to people close to the administration. Others in the vice president's office also could face charges, these people said.

It isn't clear if anyone outside the vice president's office would be charged with a crime. President Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, testified four times before the grand jury, but as of late yesterday, it wasn't clear if he would be caught in the prosecutor's net. If Mr. Rove isn't charged, it would be a relief for the White House and Republicans -- though one significantly tempered if several White House officials are indicted.

Dozens injured in 'ghost stampede'

October 25 2005 at 10:51PM

Beijing - Eight children were killed and 45 injured when students yelling "ghost" sparked a stampede on a darkened elementary school staircase in China's Sichuan province, officials and reports said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on Tuesday evening in the school in Guangna township when someone shouted "ghosts are coming" as students filed out of their evening classes, press reports said.

"Eight died and 45 were injured, five are in serious condition," a spokesperson identified only as Xiang told AFP.

"We are sure that there were some management problems at the school, you can't let so many classes out at one time because that is when things become crowded."

That could be, but then I have to wonder what the hell he has been doing in the past many months. Wouldn't the full scope of the investigation been known a long time ago. Damn, the guy has stacks and stacks of gathered information.

I also wonder why Plame's neighbors are just now being interviewed. Why wasn't that done very early in the investigation. Something stinks to me.

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at October 26, 2005 12:07 PM

One remaining mystery is who provided Ms. Plame's name to Robert Novak, whose column revealed the former operative's identity. While Mr. Novak has declined to say whether he talked to the special prosecutor, an attorney involved in the case confirmed that the columnist had discussed the source of that information. Mr. Novak's attorney declined to comment.

New York Times Reporter Miller
Is in Talks Over Her Job Status

Move Follows Public Break
With the Newspaper;
Severance Package Discussed
By JOE HAGAN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
October 26, 2005; Page B3

New York Times reporter Judith Miller has begun discussing her future employment options with the newspaper, including the possibility of a severance package, a lawyer familiar with the matter, said yesterday.

The discussion about her future comes several days after the public rupture of the relationship between the Times and Ms. Miller, a 28-year veteran of the paper. Both the editor and the publisher of the Times have expressed regret for their unequivocal support for Ms. Miller when she spent 85 days in jail for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury investigating the unmasking of a Central Intelligence Agency operative.

snip

The newspaper began to distance itself from the reporter last week after the particulars of Ms. Miller's relationship with Mr. Libby were revealed in a first-person account of her testimony and in an independently reported piece in the Times. Those articles suggested that Ms. Miller may have misled the paper about a previously undisclosed meeting with Mr. Libby, and that the paper was negligent in not asking Ms. Miller more questions about her involvement before advancing her cause.

Over the weekend, two columnists for the New York Times wrote pieces questioning whether Ms. Miller could continue working for the paper. Ms. Miller currently is on vacation. She was released from jail Sept. 29.

Yes, that is what I think and since it relates to the original cause of the investigation why wasn't that checked out very early in the process. I think someone (Fitzgerald) may be grasping at straws. It looks to me like he can't get the jury to vote for indictments.

If Bette Davis were still with us, she'd have a piece of advice for the American public: "Better buckle up. It's going to be a bumpy ride."

Yes, all hell is about to break loose. As I said in an early column, I've been here before and I can tell you, it ain't gonna be pretty. The process that is about to begin is a bit like the whole body politic getting a colonic. I remember how it left the nation weak and disoriented for a decade or more. I am, of course, speaking of Watergate -- different cast of characters, same crimes.

In the Watergate era we still had people in Congress, from both parties, with the integrity and backbone to pursue the matter on their own. But those folks have been replaced by the political equivalent of street gang members who make their judgments based on whether the other guy is wearing red or blue.

So forget Congress. This time the sword is wielded by an independent prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald -- who is, by all reports, a genuine Dudley Dooright:

"Famous among colleagues for remembering minutiae, he keeps extraordinary hours while handling the leak investigation and managing a Chicago office with more than 150 lawyers. Dick Sauber, an attorney for Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper in the leak case, said Fitzgerald "worked the case down to the small details. He was the one who knew the obscure fact in a document and knew where to find it."

Preparing for a Bumpy Ride

And (legally), maybe it takes Fitz this long to dot his "i's" and cross his "t's," so to speak.

Posted by: dada at October 26, 2005 12:24 PM

So will the great unraveling begin this week? I suspect so. If Rove and/or Libby are indicted, it will become impossible for the administration to deny access to materials exposing the inner workings of this White House. They will try, of course, claiming "executive privilege." But much of it will still eventually come out. ( Remember, when Bill Clinton found himself entangled in the gears of justice, even his very DNA could not escape the long arm of the law.)

This administration has relied on its ability to hide inconvenient facts, beginning with their refusal for five years to even identify the members of Dick Cheney's Energy Task Force. But shaping US energy policy to benefit old pals in the oil business is politics as usual. Trumping up evidence to justify war is a crime with both national and international ramifications.

First, understand that Dick Cheney was the maestro of that crime. Libby was his Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, the guy who got his hands dirty doing the boss's work. When tough-guy Sammy faced years in prison he rolled over on boss John Gotti. Sammy looked his old boss right in the eye in court as he dropped dime after dime after dime on him. Sammy got out of prison. Gotti died, alone and ranting, in a federal prison hospital.

heh...

Iran president wants Israel ‘wiped off the map’
Ahmadinejad says new wave of Palestinian attacks will destroy Israel

Updated: 7:31 a.m. ET Oct. 26, 2005

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran’s hard-line president called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” and said a new wave of Palestinian attacks will destroy the Jewish state, state-run media reported Wednesday.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also denounced attempts to recognize Israel or normalize relations with it.

“There is no doubt that the new wave (of attacks) in Palestine will wipe off this stigma (Israel) from the face of the Islamic world,” Ahmadinejad told students Wednesday during a Tehran conference called “The World without Zionism.”

“Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation’s fury, any (Islamic leader) who recognizes the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world,” Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad also repeated the words of the founder of Iran’s Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who called for the destruction of Israel.

“As the Imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map,” said Ahmadinejad, who came to power in August.

Ahmadinejad referred to Israel’s recent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as a “trick,” saying Gaza is part of the Palestinian territories and the withdrawal was meant to make Islamic states acknowledge Israel.

Prevaricating witnesses, refusing to testify, feigning presenile dementia and C.R.A.F.T. disease were probably not factors...

Interesting comparing the length of time and amount of money it took Kenneth Starr to "investigate" the Clintons vs. the amount of time and cash Fitzgerald's investigation is taking. Wasn't one about a land sale where those crooked Clintons were such clever bastards they lost money to throw folks off the scent? The fiends! As we have heard, a little leak about a covert agent whose speciality is WMD is small potatoes in comparison to the fact that Bill Clinton may have enjoyed a hummer and been embarrassed to talk about it.

The editorial page of The New York Times, January 18, 1920, carried an interesting comment on the Federal Reserve System. The unidentified writer, perhaps Paul Warburg, stated, "The Federal Reserve is a fount of credit, not of capital." This is one of the most revealing statements ever made about the Federal Reserve System. It says that the Federal Reserve System will never add anything to our capital structure, or to the formation of capital, because it is organized to produce credit, to create money for credit money and speculations, instead of providing capital funds for the improvement of commerce and industry. Simply stated, capitalization would mean the providing of notes backed by a precious metal or other commodity. Reserve notes are unbacked paper loaned at interest.

On July 25, 1921, Senator Owen stated on the editorial page of The New York Times, The Federal Reserve Board is the most gigantic financial power in all the world. Instead of using this great power as the Federal Reserve Act intended that it should, the board....delegated this power to the banks, threw the weight of its influence toward the support of the policy of German inflation." The senator whose name was on the Act saw that it was not performing as promised.

* George Bush led us into war under false pretenses. Now, our courageous men and women in uniform continue to pay the ultimate price for his "shoot first" foreign policy.

* The Administration refuses to come clean on Iraq. Their claims of progress bear no relation to reality and are a disservice to our troops and our country.

* They're packing the federal courts with right-wing judges. And now they're refusing to supply key background information on their most important nominees.

* Tragically, their response to the massive human disaster caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita has been incredibly inept. It only serves to underscore the extreme poverty that grips our inner cities and our rural heartland.

At the Senate Hearings in 1921 on the Federal Reserve System, it was brought out that the System had been receiving this gold. Congressman Dunbar questioned Governor W.P.G. Harding of the Federal Reserve Board as follows:

DUNBAR: "In other words, Russia is sending a great deal of gold to the European countries, which in turn send it to us?"

HARDING: "This is done to pay for the stuff bought in this country and to create dollar exchange."
DUNBAR: "At the same time, that gold came from Russia through Europe?"

HARDING: "Some of it is thought to be Kolchak gold, coming through Siberia, but it is none of the Federal Reserve Banks' business. The Secretary of the Treasury has issued instructions to the assay office not to take any gold which does not bear the mint mark of a friendly nation."

Just what Governor Harding meant by "a friendly nation" is not clear. In 1921, we were not at war with any country, but Congress was already beginning to question the international gold dealings of the Federal Reserve System. Governor Harding could very well shrug his shoulders and say that it was none of the Federal Reserve Banks' business where the gold came from. Gold knows no nationality or race. The United States by law had ceased to be interested in where its gold came from in 1906, when Secretary of the Treasury Shaw made arrangements with several of the larger New York banks (ones in which he had interests) to purchase gold with advances of cash from the United States Treasury, which would then purchase the gold from these banks. The Treasury could claim that it did not know where its gold came from since their office only registers the bank from which it made the purchase. Since 1906, the Treasury has not known from which of the international gold merchants it was buying its gold.

The international gold dealings of the Federal Reserve System, and its active support in helping the League of Nations to force all the nations
of Europe and South America back on the gold standard for the benefit of international gold merchants like Eugene Meyer, Jr. and Albert Strauss, is best demonstrated by a classic incident, the sterling credit of 1925.

There's talk of the indictments being sealed. No reason for that, other than Fitz wanting to announce formally. If the indictments weren't sealed, by law, they would be available to the press as soon as they were filed. They would be open to gross interpretation.

Sealing them and announcing them formally tomorrow is really more fair to those indicted. Plus... NO ONE will miss his announcement, eh?

It will be tomorrow, because he'll want to give the grand jury Friday off... with his and the court's thanks.

Guesses... but just watch.

DoJ says no announcement on CIA leak today
By Caroline Daniel in Washington
Published: October 25 2005 22:59 | Last updated: October 26 2005 01:49

The US Justice Department said there would be not announcement on Wednesday in the CIA leak investigation case, while the grand jury met to consider the indictments.

On Tuesday night, news reports, supported by a source close to the lawyers involved in the case, said that target letters to those facing indictment were being issued, with sealed indictments to be filed on Wednesday and released by the end of the week.

Those in legal jeopardy may include Lewis “Scooter” Libby, vice-president Dick Cheney's chief of staff, and Karl Rove, Mr Bush's chief political strategist.

Grass Valley Great Dane Claims Canine World Record

Written for the web by George Warren, Reporter

A Grass Valley dog named Gibson is the "Greatest Dane" of them all.

The three-year-old Harlequin Great Dane claims the distinction of being the tallest dog in the world. A crew from the Guinness Book of World Records came from London for a photo shoot with Gibson, who'll be included in the next edition.

"Gibson has been a record holder for some time now," explained Guinness media coordinator Betty Halvagi. "What we do is every year look at the book and see what kind of interesting records and record holders we can photograph."

Gibson stands over 7 feet tall when upright, but the official measurement is taken from paw to shoulder. The dog measured 42.6 inches in the summer of 2004 when the world record was certified, but his owner said he's still growing. "I've had Danes since 1981," said Sandy Hall. "I've never seen anything like this."

Roll Call: Fitzgerald visited Rove's attorney Tuesday in leak case

Appearing to jibe with a report in the Los Angeles Times Tuesday evening which asserted that Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald is turning his sights back to Bush's chief advisor, Karl Rove, Roll Call's Mary Ann Akers will report in Wednesday's editions that Fitzgerald was seen at Rove's lawyer's offices.

Rove is among numerous officials who have been questioned about whether they had a role in outing covert CIA agent Valerie Plame Wilson, the wife of ardent Iraq intelligence critic Joseph Wilson.

According to Roll Call, Fitzgerald was spotted Tuesday at the law offices of Patton Boggs, the firm that employs Rove's lawyer Robert Luskin.

Rumors Flying on Harriet Miers and Vice President Cheney
This just in from a close friend who worked inside the pinnacle of Republican power in the Senate a few years ago, so while this is rumor -- it's Republican rumor, which makes it interesting:

Steve, just heard from trusted friend that McCain was approached about serving as VP if Cheney has "health problems" or otherwise steps down.
Beyond that, speculation that Miers will step down to be replaced by a Bork-like sub (even better, Bork himself...). In other words, Cheney takes a bullet, a titanic battle over SCOTUS ensued to change the subject. You didn't hear this from me, but feel free to pass on such unsubstantiated rumors.

The politics of distraction and wag-the-dog style political machinations happen in this town.

I still have a hard time believing Cheney would step down, but it could happen. And we all know that the Miers effort is not going well.

If Cheney did step down and McCain ascended, the question is to what degreet McCain would be given the latitude to "clean up things" -- otherwise, he runs the risk of sinking with the Bush administration and having his name sink with it.

Alternatively, only two U.S. Presidents in history have gone directly from the Senate to the White House. McCain getting the VP position in a time of crisis would make him the stand-out among all other candidates.

And you can be darn sure that the fundamentalist right would be stuck in a corner.

Grand Jury in CIA Leak Case Adjourns By PETE YOST and JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writers
3 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The federal grand jury investigating the leak of a CIA officer's identity met for three hours Wednesday with Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald and adjourned for the day without announcing any action.

Fitzgerald is known to be putting the finishing touches on a two-year criminal probe that has ensnared two senior White House aides.

After the grand jury left for the day, federal prosecutors conferred for about an hour in the grand jury area of the federal courthouse.

There was no word on whether Fitzgerald planned to make any announcement or whether the grand jury planned to meet again.

I believe Cheney very well could step down, Toni.

I seriously doubt he's indictable, but he didn't insulate himself from Fitzmas like Bush did. Cheney's name is all over Fitz's paperwork and... without the slightest doubt, he'll be subpoenaed for the trial.

Not good to have a VP subpoenaed. Takes away from the power of the office if some court can tell you where to be and when to be there.

VERY good chance he'll step down.

Posted by: Fishgrease at October 26, 2005 1:35 PM

I have no plans to run for office, however I'm allowed to exercise my freedom of speech.

Your ability to link, insinuate, or otherwise brag about your knowledge of my posts, doesn't impress....nor validate the general public's opinion of my character here.

When a publisher or for that matter any media company (recording or otherwise) wishes to strike a deal with me, I'd be more than happy to negotiate a contract for services.

You should have no problem finding my name in the phone book, along with the address.

Henceforth, Bob Brody, you obviously have a problem with organized labor.

Delphi's demand: Take $9 an hour

Health care, pension trims also planned
October 26, 2005

BY JASON ROBERSON and MICHAEL ELLIS
FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITERS

If Delphi Corp. has its way, workers for the nation's largest auto parts supplier would be paid as little as $9 per hour under 65% wage cuts, and be hit with a tenfold increase in health-care costs, no dental and vision care and other sharp reductions in benefits, according to a proposal revealed on the Web site of a UAW local.

The document shows for the first time the severity of the cuts the bankrupt company has told the union it needs to survive.

The cuts are even stiffer than the company's final proposal to the union before it filed for Chapter 11 on Oct. 8, further infuriating workers already angered by the threats to their livelihood.

"How in the hell do they expect anybody to live?" asked Andy Loughran, a 54-year-old Delphi worker from Dayton, Ohio. "You think you're going to get a good quality product at $9 an hour?"

Loughran, who has worked for General Motors Corp. or Delphi for 33 years, makes $28 an hour. He said if his wages are reduced under Delphi's most recent proposal to $9.50 an hour, he will not work.

B stands for Brian. It's what we call at the elementary level, an abbreviation. Or initial.

On a further note, I completely agree with the prosecutor who's suing the psychologists who appeared on Dateline, with regards to that show shortly before...Rader I think is his name...the code inspector from Wichita who claims sexual problems caused his crimes in the 70's, maybe...ring a bell?

MAT

~~~ Please let me know how you like that snow shoe walking!
I've done it before... just never owned the shoes. Where I hike, there are these huge drifts and if you break the crust and fall in it can take you an hour just to pound your way out of there... and then you're all wet and freezing. I'll carry the snowshoes on my back for most of the hike and then just put em on for the drifts.
~~~ I love the snow and I want to do something like that!

I actually don't like snow so well... having lived round it for so long. But if I quit hiking for the Winter I'll get all out of shape and I promised myself I'd not let that happen again. By the end of the Winter, I not only hate snow... I hate everything white. White bread... white sheets... white towels....... white people.

~~~ I can't ski, because I tried and I biffed it on those MOgal thangs.
I used to fall so specacularly that if I hadn't been young and drunk... it would have killed me. I quit skiing when I was 30. Bones and especially joints don't heal well after that. I ski brave. I ski stupid. Best just to forget about it. If I ever get to missing it... I'll just jump off the roof of the house here into that big pine tree in the front yard. That will simulate my style of skiing pretty well.
More national security than would ever be required to protect this country.
WASHINGTON
The federal grand jury investigating the leak of a CIA officer's identity met for three hours Wednesday with Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald and adjourned for the day without announcing any action.
Fitzgerald is known to be putting the finishing touches on a two-year criminal probe that has ensnared two senior White House aides.
After the grand jury left for the day, federal prosecutors conferred for about an hour in the grand jury area of the federal courthouse.
There was no word on whether Fitzgerald planned to make any announcement or whether the grand jury planned to meet again.
New Zealand weapons conference protest
Around 70 protesters confronted police and a tank at a conference for the New Zealand Defence Industry Association, and members of the Aoteaora Revolutionary Clown Army (ARCA) helped put the event in the news. The sit-in and blockade organized by Peace Action Wellington ended with twenty arrests and several injuries. Follow Aoteroa’s IMC thread for updates on the seven who are still facing charges of trespassing, police assault and obstruction.
10th National Day of Protest to Stop Police Brutality
The October 22nd Coalition, part of the Stolen Lives Project, organized demonstrations around the U.S. and encouraged observers to wear black on Saturday, to remember people killed by police forces. Copwatch held a conference in San Diego, while vigils and rallies recognized victims in San Jose, Fresno, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Greensboro, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Milwaukee, New York City, and Washington, D.C. As she was taken from her home, the arresting officer Hernandez had told her, “No rallies for you today.” In the lead up to this month’s protest she wrote, Resistance: When is enough enough?
Time To Act Like Grownups
Following up on my brief post the other day, SnoodGuy notes over at DailyKos that this Fitzmas shit is getting old :
Am I the only one troubled by the triumphalism on the left about Fitzgerald's investigation?
I felt something cold in my stomach when I saw the term "Fitzmas" on this site last week. I'm all for seeing these crooks go down, but I think this air of celebration isn't helping us - in fact, it reminds me of the Republicans before the impeachment process, and we know how well that went for them.
Two main points below...
Whatever the charges or eventual results of this turn out to be, it's not a happy day in our country if people at the highest level of government are committing crimes. We shouldn't celebrate it.
If we, as Democrats/liberals treat this with festival gusto, we make the whole process look like a partisan gotcha instead of a criminal investigation.
So far, Fitzgerald has been apparently professional, detail-oriented, and very terse with the press. Completely unlike, say, Ken Starr and his clown show. I like it that way.
This shouldn't be a Democrat/Republican thing, it should be an American thing.
The more we act like the Republicans did with Clinton's impeachment, the more the public will see it in the same light -- standard partisan politics -- and the less chance we have of using this to highlight the flaws of the rest of the criminal, hypocritical, boneheaded, amoral Republican agenda.
This isn't a partisan game and it's not funny. Treating the indictments of government officials like a holiday is pretty childish coming from a left-wing so politically neutered that we have to rely on a grand jury to score political points for us.
So wipe that smile off your face. George W. Bush is going to be President for the next three years. The next chance the Democrats have to regain the Senate and the House is more than a year away, but despite every Republican misstep that's happened lately, it's still doubtful that Democrats will be able to get their shit together well enough to swing eith
We've Been Here Before
What was the cause, the point, the strategy? Suddenly many Americans started to realize that there was no good answer.
By Anna Quindlen
Newsweek
Oct. 31, 2005 issue - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a tapering wall of black granite cut into the grass of Constitution Gardens. Maya Lin envisioned a scar when she designed it, a scar on this land, which is exactly right. Maybe someday his security detail could drive George W. Bush over to take a look. He'll be able to see himself in the reflective surface.
The president never wanted the war in Iraq to be personal. His people forbade photographs of coffins arriving home. They refused to keep track of how many Iraqis had been killed and wounded. When "Nightline" devoted a show to the faces of soldiers who had died, one conservative broadcast outlet even pulled the program from its lineup.
The president wanted this to be about policy, not about people. Even that did not go well. The policy became a moving target. First there were weapons of mass destruction that were not there and direct links to the terrorists who attacked on September 11 that didn't exist. The removal of Saddam Hussein was given as the greatest good; it has been done. Then it became the amorphous goal of bringing freedom to the Iraqi people, as though liberty were flowers and we were FTD. The elections, the constitution, the rubble, the dead. Once again we were destroying the village in order to save it.
LINK
Posted by: toniD at October 26, 2005 2:43 PM
The Vietnam Memorial stands, in part, as a monument to blind incrementalism, to men who refused to stop, not because of wisdom but because of ego, because of the fear of looking weak. Not enough troops, not enough planning, no real understanding of the people or the power of the insurgency, dwindling public support. The war in Iraq is a disaster in the image and likeness of its predecessor.
During each election cycle, we ponder the question of whether character matters. Of course it does. Does anyone doubt that the continued prosecution of this war has to do with the personality of the commander in chief, a man who is stubborn and calls it strength, who wears blinders and calls it vision? When he vowed to invade Iraq, the advisers he heeded were those who, like him, had never seen combat. The one who had was marginalized and is now gone. The investigation of who leaked what to whom, of what the reporter knew and how she knew it, may be about national security and journalistic ethics, but at its base it is about something more important: the Nixonian lengths to which these people will go to shore up a bankrupt policy and destroy those who cross them on it.
Posted by: toniD at October 26, 2005 2:45 PM
Hi akaMat. Sorry to hear about your cat. Hope you're not going on the "instinct" standard. Housecats are as domestic as you are, and their instincts are about as sharp as a beach ball. You tamper with nature, bad things can happen. A healthy cat can eat veggie and be mostly fine, but it tends to catch up with them, and no, they're not natural omnivores. You may well have to introduce animal fat into the diet. I'd suggest a little beef or pork fat, bacon grease drizzled on their usual food, with a couple small pinches of red clover might do the trick. Be sparing with the red clover, just two small pinches. It cleans the kidneys, but isn't toxic like goldenseal. Problem is, if you over do it, you could make it worse. Your cats eat what you raised them to eat.
Sorta reminds me of a someone I knew who trained horses. She told me "I don't trust you because my horses don't trust you, and I trust their instincts". Since I curried her horses and they liked me a lot when she wasn't around, I just told her to ask the stable owner about that. He told her the truth - her horses were reacting to her distrust of me - just as they did with him, and any other man, because she just plain had a problem with three-leggers. The horses only had the problem when she was around.
Cats, while well adapted and evolved to live with humans, are really very stupid people for the most part. Note that I'm a big cat fan, and always have been... but I'm also a Ramones fan, and they're not any smarter than the average cat.
Posted by: JIK at October 26, 2005 2:47 PM
It only takes a little objectivity to see that Randi Rhodes, Marc Maran, Seder and most of the Air America Gang....sound EXACTLY like Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, etc. did in 1997!
Dick at the Heart of Darkness
By Maureen Dowd
The New York Times
Wednesday 26 October 2005
After W. was elected, he sometimes gave visitors a tour of the love alcove off the Oval Office where Bill trysted with Monica - the notorious spot where his predecessor had dishonored the White House.
At least it was only a little pantry - and a little panting.
If W. wants to show people now where the White House has been dishonored in far more astounding and deadly ways, he'll have to haul them around every nook and cranny of his vice president's office, then go across the river for a walk of shame through the Rummy empire at the Pentagon.
The shocking thing about the trellis of revelations showing Dick Cheney, the self-styled Mr. Strong America, as the central figure in dark conspiracies to juice up a case for war and demonize those who tried to tell the public the truth is how un-shocking it all is.
It's exactly what we thought was going on, but we never thought we'd actually hear the lurid details: Cheney and Rummy, the two old compadres from the Nixon and Ford days, in a cabal running the country and the world into the ground, driven by their poisonous obsession with Iraq, while Junior is out of the loop, playing in the gym or on his mountain bike.
Mr. Cheney has been so well protected by his Praetorian guard all these years that it's been hard for the public to see his dastardly deeds and petty schemes. But now, because of Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation and candid talk from Brent Scowcroft and Lawrence Wilkerson, he's been flushed out as the heart of darkness: all sulfurous strands lead back to the man W. aptly nicknamed Vice.
Accordingly, it's cyical to think that power in and of it's self automatically leads to corruption.
The fighting Dems are a good example of responsible people seeking positions of power.
Al and Janeane are examples of responsible people taking responsible actions with their power.
Many teachers are modeling responsibility in their jobs for our children.
Many soldiers join the military to be responsible for our democratic freedoms.
Many firepersons and police officers use their positions of power responsibly.
Absolutely.
Power corrupts. You can't abuse power without power to abuse.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely. That is: that the corrupted acts are of an absolute nature, such as the power over life and death... lying a nation into war, for example.
Power alone is merely power. Human nature is imperfect. Mistakes will be made both wilfull and unintended.
Hope. Possitivity. The golden rule. Respect for our democratic system. These things mitigate the inevitability of systemologic atrophy and we muddle on.
It's either muddle on or fuck it, give up and stick one's head in the sand.
I, for one, choose to muddle.
In Japanese Buddhist temples, there's a person called (IIRC) a rishi, who's job is to tap people onthe sholder with a stick when they nod off or get distracted from their meditation. Please note that someone has to request their services before hand, so no one is surprised or spooked when it happens.
Maybe we need to establish an office of The Rishi-General of The United States of America. Y'know, someone who stands behind the president, and when they see the president falling to the corrupting lure of power, gently SMACKS THE SHIT outta the president with a bokken or shinai stick. Just "WHACK WHACK WHACKETTA WHACK WHACK WHACK"!
Speaking to BBC radio on Tuesday, Galloway said: "I did not lie under oath in front of the Senate committee."
He said he had not seen the latest allegations from the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, which he accused of being "cavalier with any idea of process and justice."
Galloway added: "I'm still willing to go to the United States and still willing to face any charge of perjury in front of that Senate committee.
"I'm demanding that they charge me with contempt and with perjury, I'm demanding it.
"If a Senate committee can go on the international airwaves without putting this to you, without sending me an advance (copy) and accuse me of lying under oath in front of a Senate committee, then I demand they charge me with perjury -- and I'll be on the next plane to face it."
Circumcision cuts HIV risk: study
Wed Oct 26, 2005 8:05 PM BST
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - It has long been noted that circumcised men appear to be less likely to become infected with HIV, but whether there's a benefit to actively circumcising adults for this purpose has been an open question.
Now, investigators in France and South Africa report that circumcising men does afford them some protection against HIV.
Dr. Bertran Auvert, from Hopital Ambroise-Pare in Boulogne, France, and colleagues conducted a clinical study to test this prevention strategy. They randomly assigned 1,546 uncircumcised, HIV-negative men ages 18 to 24 years residing in South Africa to be circumcised and 1,582 to a wait "control" group.
Those who underwent circumcision were instructed to abstain from sex for 6 weeks after the procedure.
During 21 months of follow-up, 20 cases of HIV infection occurred in the circumcision group and 49 in the control group, the team reports in the medical journal PLoS Medicine
The researchers suggest several possible ways that circumcision may protect to some extent against HIV infection: "keratinization of the glans when not protected by the foreskin, short drying after sexual contact, reducing the life expectancy of HIV on the penis after sexual contact with an HIV-positive partner, reduction of the total surface of the skin of the penis, and reduction of target cells, which are numerous on the foreskin."
Auvert's group recommends male circumcision for reducing the risk of HIV infection in areas where the disease is rampant. However, they also caution men not to think circumcision gives them total protection. "If perceived as full protection, it could lead to reduction of protection of men who, for example, decrease their condom use or otherwise engage in riskier behavior."
Here are a couple of questions I would like to ask Scotty McClellan (nice Scotch, by the way):
Question: Did any CIA agents die as a result of the Plame leak?
Scotty: I can't answer that question because of the ongoing investigation...
Question: You mean are about to be indicted yourself?
Scotty: No, ehhh... Maybe, I don't know.
Question: Are you going to be called as a witness?
Scotty: That is a possibility. I can't go into...
Question: Shouldn't you then step down, and be replaced by a White House spokesperson who ins't wrapped up in this scandal? So he can properly answer our questions?
Just a thought. How long is this "spokesperson" not going to speak, because there is an ongoing investigation? It seems to me that there are going to be ongoing investigations for a long time.
The Blue Lupin
According to The Zohar, the whole apple-eating incident with Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden (known kabbalistically as the sin of Adam), was written into the original thought of Creation.
We were destined to fall.
I know, not the cheeriest way to begin a tune-up, but take heart—there’s a flip side.
Remember back in the Endless World, before this world was created, before the sun and the moon, before good and evil, before Coke vs. Pepsi? Remember when we were one with the Light? It was then that we decided we needed a playground where we could play the role of Creator. We decided that in order to do so, we needed a setting and characters who could play the roles of our challenges, our obstacles, and our subsequent triumphs.
There is a beautiful line in the Shabbat prayer Lecha Dodi that says, “The manifestation of every action is already included in the inception of the first thought.”
The sin of Adam was encoded in the act of Creation because we knew we’d need the fall to make the getting up so rewarding. It’s important for you to constantly remember that obstacles are necessities. However, it’s your choice whether they become chaos or opportunities for revealing Light. Do you get the difference? You can wallow in the garbage or triumph in it. This week we get the energy to choose triumph.
This idea is echoed in the beauty of my favorite California wildflower, the blue lupin. Every petal of the lupin is edged with white, providing contrast and giving the blue color more definition, so that a field of lupins is more brilliantly blue than you can imagine.
This fulfilled life is so fulfilled because it is edged with lack.
If you’re walking this earth, you’re going to experience moments of lack. But as long as you learn from those moments—and get inspired by them—then you are doing exactly what you asked for so long ago.
Remember?
All the Best,
Yehuda
Author Says Hillary Will Run for President in 2004
NewsMax.com
Tuesday, July 29, 2003
There's a serious danger that President Hillary Clinton will become a reality sooner than your worst nightmares imagine, says best-selling author Carl Limbacher.
Sen. Clinton will likely run for the White House in 2004 rather than wait until 2008, Limbacher reveals in his new book, "Hillary's Scheme."
He conducted extensive research into Hillary's past and secured exclusive interviews with Clinton insiders - and even questioned Hillary herself - to bring you the real story, the one the leftist media establishment refuses to report. His book is available at bookstores everywhere -- or from NewsMax.com
New Revelations About Hillary
In "Hillary's Scheme" Limbacher makes dozens of new revelations:
Why Hillary is running in 2004 instead of waiting until 2008.
Evidence that during her Senate race Hillary received money linked to terrorist sources (WWWS? or What Would WaDo Say?) - and how her campaign altered federal election records to hide this.
Her close friend who says Hillary made clear her presidential plans in 1992.
Hillary's behind-the-scenes effort to torpedo Al Gore that forced him to withdraw from the 2004 race.
Hillary's use of secret investigators to dig up dirt and smear her opponents.
Boy, this guy was right on the mark!
It is fascinating to hear Republicans and Conservatives talk about the United States of America as if it's their own only business. In the USA, lives many people of many political colors. What makes this country great is the United View and commitment that all for one country and one country for all. Treason is an act committed by cowards. The idiots who put the affair of Valerie Plame second after their own personal views (conservative or republican interest) are cowards and traitors. Why don't they get the hell out of this country if they can't find the courage to stand up to the administration's acts of treason? Does this country need once again a George Washington to revolt against the colonialists? Do Democracts have what it takes to throw another Tea Party? Does the US need another Abraham Lincoln to spell out the terms of serronder to the Neocons and slave enprisonners? History taught a lesson to the confederates about slavery. History will once again teach a lesson to the Neocons about the age of the United Nations treaties LAW & ORDER and the importance of the International Criminal Court.
WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom DeLay failed to comply with House requirements that he disclose all contributions to a defense fund that pays his legal bills, the Texas Republican acknowledged to House officials.
He wrote officials that $20,850 contributed in 2000 and 2001 was not reported anywhere. Another $17,300 was included in the defense fund’s quarterly report but not in DeLay’s 2000 annual financial disclosure report — a separate requirement. Other donations were understated as totaling $2,800, when the figure should have been $4,450.
It was during that period that DeLay was the subject of several House ethics investigations.
DeLay, R-Texas, stepped aside as House majority leader — at least temporarily — after he was indicted on a felony charge Sept. 28 in a Texas campaign fund-raising investigation. He has since been charged a second time in the same case.
I haven't had the stomach to listen to Limbaugh for several days so I don't have my usual report of his nonsense.
I continue to monitor Dobson when I can but he has been doing his religious/social engineering shtick of late (rather than giving his political instructions). I don't listen to his religious foolishness unless he opens his show with suggestions for beating children or something equally interesting to me.
Thought I'd mention this for two reasons.
First, I don't think that many (if any) MR bloggers ever listen to Limbaugh to see what he's spewing.
Second, War Dog thinks that I listen to Limbaugh because Limbaugh is compelling, which is not true. I offer the fact that I monitor Dobson as proof.
Grand Jury in CIA Leak Case Adjourns By PETE YOST and JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writers
28 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The federal grand jury investigating the leak of a CIA officer's identity met for three hours Wednesday with Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald and his deputies, adjourning for the day without announcing any action.
Fitzgerald is known to be putting the finishing touches on a two-year criminal probe that has ensnared President Bush's top political adviser Karl Rove and Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff I. Lewis Libby.
Away from the federal courthouse, FBI agents conducted a handful of last-minute interviews to check facts key to the case.
After the grand jury left for the day, federal prosecutors conferred for about an hour in the grand jury area of the federal courthouse.
There was no word on whether Fitzgerald planned to make any announcement or when the grand jury planned to meet again.
Prosecutor meets judge in leak case
Patrick Fitzgerald, the Special Prosecutor appointed to investigate the outing of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson, met with U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan, the New York Sun reported on its website today.
RAW STORY has reposted the details here since the Sun's website appeared to be loading slowly/not loading due to heavy traffic.
"As reporters massed outside an elevator lobby leading to the grand jury rooms, the special prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, apparently slipped out a back exit to conduct the noontime meeting with Judge Hogan," the Sun's Josh Gerstein wrote.
Fitzgerald's meeting with Hogan could signal that he is seeking an extension of the grand jury. It could also mean -- if he met the judge with the foreman of the jury -- that he was presenting indictments to the judge.
No other details are available. If indictments have been handed down, the Fitzgerald camp isn't talking, and neither are lawyers involved in the case.
It would be a crime for Fitzgerald or his team to leak details of the indictments before they are issued publicly.
GOP senator wants written evidence that Miers is conservative
WASHINGTON -- The White House should provide written evidence that Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has a conservative judicial philosophy instead of asking senators to rely her statements or the word of her friends, conservative Sen. David Vitter, R-La., said Wednesday.
"What I am suggesting is that I'd love to see more written material that predates the nomination," said Vitter after an early morning meeting with Miers, the White House counsel.
When asked how important getting that material was to his vote, he said "It's extremely important. I don't know how to put it in a numbers term, but it's extremely important."
Meanwhile, Miers was expected on Wednesday to give the Senate her answers to a second questionnaire from the committee. Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and the committee's top Democrat, Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, criticized Miers' responses to the committee's first questionnaire as vague and incomplete.
Leakers' boat cut adrift by White House
BY THOMAS M. DeFRANK and KENNETH R. BAZINET
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU
WASHINGTON - For the first time, the White House yesterday injected a little distance between President Bush and top subordinates at the center of the CIA leak probe.
With an announcement of possible indictments coming as early as today from the special prosecutor amid reports "target letters" have been issued, Bush spokesman Scott McClellan used carefully parsed language to hint that Karl Rove and Lewis (Scooter) Libby could have misled him when they said they were not involved in outing CIA spy Valerie Plame.
Asked specifically whether Rove and Libby left him "hung out to dry" when he vouched for them, McClellan said, "There are facts the President doesn't know. There are facts I don't know."
He was later queried again on the topic and told reporters, "You pointed back to some past comments that I gave, and I've talked to you about the assurances that I've received on that."
But McClellan didn't mince words in defending Vice President Cheney, who reportedly told his chief of staff Libby about Plame well before she was outed - contradicting Libby's claim that reporters gave him her name. He described Cheney as someone who tells the truth, "a straightforward, plain-spoken person."
Senate Votes Down Heating Aid Increase By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer
8 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - The Senate decided Wednesday the money wasn't there for a substantial spending boost for the federal home heating program, deflecting arguments that soaring energy prices could force the poor to choose between heat and food this winter.
Senators voted 54-43 in favor of a proposal to boost the fiscal 2006 budget for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program from $2.2 billion to $5.1 billion. That was six votes short of the 60-vote majority needed to approve new spending not coupled with equivalent spending cuts.
Northern senators who pushed for increased spending for the program, led by Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, argued that the surge in fuel costs would be crippling to low-income families.
People could have to "choose between keeping the heat on, putting food on the table or buying much needed prescription drugs," Collins said. "No family should need to make such terrible choices."
DeLay to Appear in Court Again on Charges By SUZANNE GAMBOA, Associated Press Writer
50 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay will return to court next Tuesday for a hearing on whether the judge assigned to handle his trial should be removed.
Dick DeGuerin, DeLay's attorney, said the Texas Republican would attend the hearing in Austin because "he wants to be involved in every facet (of the case) particularly when something is very important."
Defendants are required to appear at hearings unless a waiver is signed. No waiver was sought.
DeLay stepped aside as the No. 2 GOP leader in the House after he was indicted Sept. 28 on conspiracy charges arising out of an investigation into campaign fundraising in 2002 election races for the Texas state Legislature. He was indicted again five days later on money-laundering charges.
He and two associates are accused of funneling corporate money to Texas legislative campaigns in violation of state law prohibiting use of these donations for electing or defeating state candidates.
Here is the crime in outing a CIA agent
by John in DC - 10/26/2005 10:32:00 AM
By Gary Hart:
The federal statute making it a criminal penalty to knowingly divulge the identity of anyone working undercover for the Central Intelligence Agency was not enacted in a vacuum. In the early 1970s, in part as a result of the radicalization of individuals and groups over the Vietnam War, a former CIA employee named Philip Agee wrote a book revealing the identities of several dozen CIA employees, many under deep cover and some including agency station chiefs in foreign capitals....
Richard Welch, a brilliant Harvard-educated classicist, had been stationed in Greece as CIA station chief only a few months before he was murdered, by a radical Greek terrorist organization called the 17th of November, in the doorway of his house in Athens on Dec. 23, 1975. Had Agee not divulged his name, there is every reason to believe that Welch would be alive today after decades of loyal service to his country....
So, there's the crime. To casually and willfully endanger the life of an undercover CIA agent is a felony. You either believe in taking the laws of the United States seriously or you do not. Citizens - even highly placed ones - do not get to pick and choose which laws they will obey and which they will not. Miller and her publisher may think she's a hero, but I don't. It is well established that there is no First Amendment protection for a journalist or anyone else to withhold evidence of a crime.
Hi all, been a long while,
Did anyone hear Clarke on "Fresh Air" w/ Terry Gross on NPR? She asked him about Plamegate. His response was PITIFUL...paraphrasing: Politicians/feds don't make that much money and these kinds of investigations will discourage others from wanting to "serve the public" (ohh, so sorry for the power mongers and I hope it does discourage liars and thieves from "serving" the public, uh-um themselves). Went on to repeat garbage about how this shouldn't be a criminal investigation, it's just politics, it's just perjury....It was really pathetic. He did add that Rove and ilk bad for politics, worst ever seen etc. However, the main gist was "criminalization of politics" meme. Hope Sam questions him about this. I will repost in next thread.
Posted by: kas at October 26, 2005 6:50 PM
Posted by: Harold at October 26, 2005 6:51 PM
There is one final irony to this story. On Christmas Eve in 1975, I got a call at my home from the director of the CIA, William Colby. He asked if I would intervene with the White House to obtain presidential approval to have Welch buried at Arlington National Cemetery, a hero fallen in service to his country. I quickly called President Ford's chief of staff on Colby's behalf and made the request. Within two hours, the president had agreed to sign the order permitting Welch to be buried at Arlington.
The chief of staff's name was Richard Cheney.
