Yes I know who you remind me of

A girl I think I used to know

Yes I’d see her when the day got colder

On those days when it felt like snow

You know I even think that she stared like you

She used to just stand there and stare

And roll her eyes right up to heaven

And make like I just wasn’t there

And she used to fall down a lot

That girl was always falling

Again and again

And I used to sometimes try to catch her

But I never even caught her name

And sometimes we would spend the night

Just rolling about on a floor

And I remember

Even though it felt soft at the time

I always used to wake up sore

You know I even think that she smiled like you

She used to just stand there and smile

And her eyes would go all sort of far away

And stay like that for quite a while

And I remember she used to fall down a lot

That girl was always falling

Again and again

And I used to sometimes try to catch her

But I never even caught her name

Communist Party Statement on Karl Rove

by CPUSA Political Action Commission, 07/26/2005 14:42

The Communist Party, USA calls for Karl Rove to be fired and prosecuted. Working people have more than enough reasons for removing Rove from the government and putting him on trial, and several are sufficient even for the Republican Party.

Rove is now under fire for his role in defending and covering up lies which the Bush Administration used to build support for their invasion and occupation of Iraq. Rove launched an immoral attack on public officials who would not bear false witness in support of Bush’s illegal operations. Rove not only lied in public; he violated U.S. law and testified falsely to a grand jury....

Feet on the ground

Head in the sky

It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time

Hi yo you got light in your eyes

WarDog is just a garden variety troll. He's been on this blog forever and people sporadically attempt conversations with him. But I've not ever seen one bear fruit. He's unable to answer the simplest question or address the most rudimentary declarative statement ... but he is masterful at deflecting, deferring and generally weaseling out of stuff.

Labor united against the Bush agenda
by Scott Marshall, CPUSA Vice Chair and Chair, CPUSA Labor Commission, 11/23/2004 14:10
Opinion

Labor was at the heart of an incredible people’s coalition to defeat George Bush and the ultra-right wing of the Republican Party. And labor remains at the heart of keeping that coalition together and fighting back against the Bush agenda. (First published in People's Weekly World Newspaper)

Gore Vidal, Octocontrarian
by Marc Cooper | The Nation, Tuesday, October 25, 2005

Q:_In the introduction to your new book, Imperial America,|.http://www.nationbooks.org/book.mhtml] =imperial you begin by saying that the four sweetest words in the American lexicon are "I told you so." What were you gloating about you begin by saying that the four sweetest words in the American lexicon are "I told you so." What were you gloating about?

A:_Oh, everything. The principal bit of wisdom that I had to purvey, which I got from Thomas Jefferson and he got from Montesquieu, is that you cannot maintain a republic and empire simultaneously. The Romans couldn't do it. The Brits could only manage it up to a certain point, but then ended up going broke. The Venetians were an empire, and the United States. And in each case the republics were lost. Starting with our war against Mexico in 1846, which was to acquire California, we've been in a serious, naked grab, grab, grab imperial mood.

Q:_In that respect, how different is the Bush Administration? Anything new here, or part of that same historical arc?

A:_Well, a lot is different. The machinery is all changed. Nuclear and bacteriological weapons exist. We can kill a lot more people. But there have been things unimaginable to me and most Americans--that we would have a government that is absolutely in your face to every country on earth. We have insulted everybody.

Q:_We now see that House majority leader Tom DeLay has been indicted. The Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, is under investigation by the SEC. We've seen the debacle around Michael "Brownie" Brown and FEMA. Is this Administration finally collapsing under its own weight?

A:_"Under its own lack of weight" [laughing], I think, is the phrase you are searching for.

Q:_Sort of the unbearable lightness?

A:_Yes, the unbearable lightness. Or here DeLay--gone tomorrow. Yes, I do believe it is breaking up. And the indictment of DeLay would not have happened had there not been two hurricanes, which dramatized to everybody in the United States that we don't have a government. And to the extent we do have one it is not only corrupt but a menace to other coun

Posted by: akaMAT at October 27, 2005 10:34 PM

Q:_If, indeed, this Administration is collapsing for lack of weight, what comes after it?

A:_Martial law, that's next. Bush is like a plane of glass. You can see all the worms turning around in his head at any moment. The first giveaway of what's on his mind--or the junta's mind.

Q:_The junta being...?

A:_Cheney, who runs everything, I suspect. And a few other serious operators. Anyway, I first noticed this was on their mind when Bush finally woke up to the fact that the hurricanes were not going to be good PR for him. And he starts to think friends of his are going to be running in '08. So what's the first thing he does? The first thing on the mind of a dictator? He gets the National Guard away from the governors. The Guard is under the governors, but Bush is always saying, Let's turn it over to the military. This is what's on their mind.

A:_They'll stand for anything. And they will stand for nothing. I deal with a lot of European journalists who are very well versed in American politics. But they will ask me silly questions like, "So, Kerry didn't turn out very well. So who's the next leader of the opposition who can become President?" I answer, Well, first the New York Times won't interview him. He won't get on prime-time television if he looks like a winner. That's out. Or he will be made a fool of, like they did with Howard Dean when they amplified his famous cry. That was all done at CBS to make him look like a maniac. They are very resourceful! So if you have a media that is completely controlled by corporate America--or whatever phrase you want to use to describe our rulers--no information is getting through that is useful to the public. No White Knight is going to be acknowledged in the press or seen on television. He would have no way of connecting with the people. And this a permanent fact in our situation.... If there could be a viable opposition to the oil and gas junta that has seized power--all three branches of government, I think--it will have to be at the grassroots. Then you will have to find a way of publicizing through the Internet the White Knight--or the Black Knight, whoever comes along to save us.

Q:_What are three or four main things the Whit

And heed well their advice,

Know what to kiss.....and when!

Consider that two wrongs never make a right

But that THREE.........do.

Wherever possible, put people on hold.

Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment

Irresistible Lies
Fox News on White House "Vandalism"

5/21/01

During the White House transition in January, one story proved irresistible to many conservative pundits: Departing Clinton staffers had gone on a wild rampage and "trashed" or "vandalized" the White House, even looting Air Force One. Allegations of the Clinton aides' reckless destruction of public property swept through the media. For some, the story symbolized the difference between a morally compromised Clinton presidency and a more dignified, honorable Bush administration.

An official government investigation, however, reveals one major problem with these stories: They apparently never happened. According to statements from the General Services Administration that were reported on May 17, little if anything out of the ordinary occurred during the transition, and "the condition of the real property was consistent with what we would expect to encounter when tenants vacate office space after an extended occupancy."

Now, if we're talking about bald-face lying, then Joe Wilson is the one who should be facing indictments....but of course, lying to the press is not a crime..so there ya go.

" Waring argues passionately, powerfully, and convincingly for the urgency of rethinking basic economic concepts such as gross domestic product in ways that take community well being into account. In her latest publication, Three Masquerades
(Auckland University Press, 1996), Waring explores the interconnections between equality, work, and human rights. "Until the whole is exposed to question," Waring warns, "nothing alters in the power dynamics of who chooses, who judges, who defines, who rules, who imposes..." and lies masquerade as truths."

Go tell the people no more vaccinations for anyone. It's not good for them. Live in harmony with nature, and forget that silly immunization stuff. Don't cook your food. Don't boil your water. Don't seek any medications for any ailments that befall you.

They are not natural. You would be free to give whatever leaves to chew on to make them feel better. That would keep with your harmony with nature motiff.

FARRAKHAN: Well, I was in a tiny village in Mexico on the 17th of September, 1985. And I had a vision-like experience climbing a mountain there, on the top of which is a temple to the Mexo-American Christ figure, Ketso Quato. And one of these little UFOs came over that mountain and I was signaled from a group of persons to come. And I was beamed up into that small vehicle and carried to a larger vehicle, where I heard the voice of my leader and teacher, the Honorable Elijah Mohamed (search), saying these words to me, in early September, the president met with his joint chiefs of staff to plan a war. He didn't tell me who the war was against or what not. But early in the next year, it came to me while I was in Ghana that this war was against Libya and Libya's leader Muammar Qaddafi. So I went there and warned him of what was about to take place. And it did take place. And the following year, sir, I was sitting on an airplane, I happened to pick up the The New York Times magazine section, and it said America planned war against Libya, and down in the writing it said ...

The real problem was for a time, the U.S. demand was keeping up with the hype. We'd take any kinda flu vaccine available. Even if it had mercury and caused all sorts of other diseases in small children, and killed old people with weakened immune systems.

They gave us all typhoid shots in the Army. We were all laid up for a couple days in boot camp 'cause of it. They made sure for a good 48hrs nobody outside the battery came near us.

The WP has a different story.....

Washington Post

Friday, October 28, 2005

The White House, district court officials and two possible targets of the CIA leak investigation were making preparations yesterday for the possible announcement of indictments by special counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald today, according to several sources familiar with the investigation.

Two sources said I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's chief of staff, was shopping for a white-collar criminal lawyer and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove began assembling a public relations team in the event they are indicted.

At the White House, aides scrambled to put the finishing touches on a political strategy to respond to the fallout from any criminal charges, including the likelihood of staff changes. A Republican consultant with close White House ties said Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card Jr. had canceled at least two trips in the past week and had met with Bush over the weekend to focus on how to react to the grand jury's decisions.

"These will be very, very dark days for the White House," the consultant quoted Card as saying.

At the U.S. District courthouse on Constitution Avenue, where Fitzgerald will meet with the grand jury for what is expected to be the final time, there was a rush of activity. Court staff made preparations to quickly produce scores of copies of documents for waiting reporters.

We will soon see........

_____________

It was posted as "lagniappe for Fishgrease's consideration".

I didn't say it was correct. And the "NYTs" damn sure wasn't included as any authority -- just the source.

It's the latest rumor.

If it's true, it obliterates your guess on Rove.

If it ain't, you're completely vindicated. That's all.

Call it a status report that could be way the fuck off.

The post immediately above yours, btw, "I'mmmmm Paul HARvey!" has an addy that reads: "andthat'stherestofthestory@roveain'toutofthewoodsyet.com".

(I see some anonymous mistook my post as an attempt to capture their flag of news-bearing on the latest Rove rumor; it wasn't. It was only meant to address the person -- possibly the same anonymous -- who was taking pleasure in posting that Rove wasn't going to be indicted.)

Now, if Rove don't get indicted tomorrow, but the investigation continues, I don't see how that differs materially from the coupla the scenarios I laid out this afternoon, which you peckishly disagreed with.

For you to now say that Rove, if he ain't indicted tomorry, ain't out off the hook yet is true, yes, but it is also what is known as backtrackin' away from the main contention.

CAN biography
CAN is one of a few internationally known "Krautrock" groups; they are famous for their repetitive and hallucinatory sound. CAN was founded in 1968 by LIEBEZEIT, Irmin SCHMIDT and Holger CZUKAY, and in their early days they also included American singer Malcolm MOONEY or Japanese vocalist Damo SUZUKI. They transformed progressive-rock into a science. By bridging classical music, jazz music and rock music of their times, CAN accomplished the first organic study on rhythm and texture. Their hypnotic and glacial instrumental jams straddled the line between free-jazz, acid-rock and chamber music. CAN's music can be difficult to appreciate, yet their albums offer some of the best experimental rock ever recorded. Then there are always the myths, the legends and the fascination.

WASHINGTON - The House voted overwhelmingly Thursday to allow the first round of U.S. military base closures and consolidations in a decade, clearing the way for facilities across the country to start shutting their doors as early as next month.

In a 324-85 vote, the House refused to veto the final report of the 2005 base-closing commission, meaning the report seems all but certain to become law in mid-November. Targeted facilities then would have six years to close their doors and shift forces as required under the report.

Both the House and Senate must pass resolutions rejecting the report to stop the Pentagon's sweeping restructuring of its far-flung domestic base network. But, as expected, the House effort by Rep. Ray LaHood (news, bio, voting record), R-Ill., failed. And there's no similar attempt under way in the Senate.

White House Fears Indictment for Libby

By PETE YOST and JOHN SOLOMON, Associated Press Writers
41 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Working against the clock, Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald weighed criminal charges against top presidential aides at the end of a two-year investigation that put the White House in a state of high suspense Thursday night.

Fitzgerald raced against a Friday expiration of the grand jury that has been investigating the exposure of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame's identity. Speculation flew across Washington about who would be indicted, or whether Fitzgerald would even bring criminal charges.

White House colleagues feared Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, would be indicted Friday for at least false statements but held out hope that presidential political adviser Karl Rove might escape criminal charges for the time being.

A person outside the legal profession familiar with recent developments in the case said Thursday night that Rove's team does not believe he is out of legal jeopardy yet but likely would be spared bad news Friday when the White House fears the first indictments will be issued.

Fitzgerald signaled Thursday he might keep Rove under continuing investigation, sparing him from immediate charges, the person said, speaking only on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the grand jury probe.

It was a vision from the Lord
Told me what I always suspected to be true
Jesus was Gay way back then
He had twelve male lovers
Even the whores of the day could not undo that
His Spirit has come back and is alive today
Jesus is still Gay
It will always be that way

I guess the Christo Facists are in for a suprise
When one of them dies
And are met at Heaven's Gate
They will be turned away because they Hate!

NY Daily News...a little more dirt on Rove! Haha

Rove critics again
turn up the volume

With rampant rumors of a soon-to-drop indictment in Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald's CIA leak investigation, the Karl Rove literary business is booming.
Rove biographers Jim Moore and Wayne Slater - who this week are rereleasing their groundbreaking study, "Bush's Brain," as a quickie paperback with a new title, "Rove Exposed: How Bush's Brain Fooled America" - are feverishly at work on "The Architect," a brand-new Rove exposé for Random House.

Meanwhile, Radar magazine yesterday reported on its Web site that Texas political insiders are predicting the demise of the married Rove's "very close relationship" with wealthy forty-something Texas lobbyist Karen Johnson.

"Everyone knows how close Karen is to Karl, but she's sick of it," the mag quotes a source "familiar with the situation," noting that Johnson and Rove didn't return phone calls.

Apparently Johnson's family wants her to marry her handsome ranch foreman, Rhett Hard, who works on Johnson's Cinco de Mayo property in Austin.

But Moore, a veteran Texas political reporter who has known Rove well since the late 1970s, told me that he and co-author Slater have no plans to include Johnson in their new book.

Tempeh is healthy!
Tempeh is very nutritive and contains many health promoting ingredients, including soy phytochemicals. The main phytochemicals in tempeh are isoflavones and saponins. Tempeh is a complete protein food that contains all the essential amino acids. The proteins and isoflavones have many health promoting effects. Isoflavones strengthen bones, helps to ease menopause symptoms, reduce risk of coronary hearth disease and some cancers. Tempeh maintains all of the fiber of the beans and gains some digestive benefits from the enzymes created during the fermentation process.

Iraq Scandal Taints 2,000 Firms

BBC

More than 2,000 firms linked to the UN oil-for-food programme in Iraq were involved in making illicit payments to the Iraqi government, a report says.
It found Saddam Hussein received $1.8bn (£1bn) from firms including Daimler Chrysler and Volvo, and it also named individuals said to have benefited.

Some of those issued denials or declined to comment at this stage.

The UN report said the firms would not necessarily have known about the bribes and surcharges.

Paul Volcker, who led the inquiry, said corruption would not have been so pervasive had there been better discipline by UN management and he emphasised the need for wide-ranging UN reforms.........

Five Minutes With: Janeane Garofalo
Thursday, October 27, 2005

A favorite in underground comedy for over a decade, Janeane Garofalo has appeared in numerous movies (including Campus Progress favorite “Wet Hot American Summer”), and was twice-nominated for an Emmy as a cast member of HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show”. Garofalo was ranked by Comedy Central among the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time.

Unwilling to be depicted as a “know-nothing liberal celebrity,” Garofalo has studied up and plays in the big time with right and left pundits as she defends her progressive politics on cable news, including sitting in as a guest host on CNN’s “Crossfire.” Today, she’s the co-host of the popular “Majority Report” show broadcasting nationwide on Air America Radio. Not bad for the child of conservative parents (who she occasionally invited on the show to debate with).

Garofalo most recently appeared as a campaign adviser on NBC’s “The West Wing.” She sat down with Campus Progress to discuss Hollywood, Washington, and the media machine.

Have you learned anything about politics from working on “The West Wing”?

Um, no. Not things that I didn’t already know. Actually, “The West Wing,” the writers have far more integrity and soul than your average Washington politician. What I mean by that is mostly right-wing politicians tend to be amoral and nihilistic. The writers give the politicians far more credit than they really should, because the politicos, if you will, on “The West Wing” have great epiphanies, and moments of clarity, and struggles with their conscience, whereas I haven’t seen any evidence of that in the Bush administration or lobbyists in general.

Having experienced both the world of Hollywood comedy folks and politicians and political media in Washington, which do you prefer? Does one feel like more of a boys’ club than the other?

It’s not a boys’ club in a bad way, it’s just dominated by males – most things are. There are good people and bad people involved in all of those areas. It doesn’t matter what your job is, you’re either an asshole or you’re not. There’s just so little difference between what both industries are doing – they’re both selling

Posted by: Kevin at October 28, 2005 12:24 AM

Not to mention they don't feed cows hay and grass primarily, anymore. Soybeans are their main diet. And alot of drugs and antibiotics. Helps keep the puss outta their milk.

And meat. Not other cows anymore, of course. They'd never break a law, just for money...

There's no restrictions on how many other farm animals you can feed to a cow though, and vise-versa.

Too Many Liberals?
Olbermann says MSNBC bosses upset by liberal guests

10/27/05

MSNBC host Keith Olbermann recently revealed that network bosses were upset when he had two liberal guests too close together on his show in September 2003.

Speaking on October 25 to comedian and talk show host Al Franken, Olbermann said the following:

You were good enough to come on this newscast with me late in the summer of 2003. It was August or September. And by coincidence, either the next day or the day before, Janeane Garofalo had been a guest on the newscast. And I got called into a vice president‘s office here and told, "Hey, we don't mind you interviewing these guys, but should you really have put liberals on, on consecutive nights?"

Olbermann added, "Al, can you believe that the country was actually at that point that recently?" Later he would answer his own question, saying, "Thank goodness we have steered out of that time."

Franken was interviewed on September 2, and Garofalo on September 4. Apparently having them both on over three days--a period of time in which Olbermann's show interviewed a total of 9 guests--was grounds for being called on the carpet at MSNBC.

This incident is consistent with the phobia MSNBC executives have displayed about hosts featuring too many left-of-center views. Phil Donahue's talkshow was cancelled in February 2003--despite being the channel's highest-rated show at the time--explicitly for his left-of-center political views. An internal management memo worried that his program could become "a home for the liberal antiwar agenda" (All Your TV, 2/25/03).

Posted by: Kevin at October 28, 2005 12:48 AM

Yeah, probably.

Everyone has a elderly relative who treated their bodies like crap and lived to the ripe-old-age anyway. My Grandma chewed snuff (she thought smoking was unhealthy!) and ate grease-laden fried food till she passed at 98.

I have a young cousin (on my Dad's side) who ate nothing but what he hunted for about a decade. he really couldn't help it, I suppose. He lived in some remote settlement at the North end of British Columbia.

Then his kidneys went to shit.

Lucky for him, Idaho pays for kidney transplants.

And lucky for him, my vegetarian mother (no blood relation to him) happened to be passing through visiting.

So she bailed him out, and gave him a kidney.

She happened to be, crazily enough, a perfect match. And though she was dangerously too old to be donating a kidney, the Docs figured it was worth a shot, since it was such a 'clean' kidney.

Newsweek Editor Killed In Car Accident

Oct 27, 2005 5:57 pm US/Eastern
(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) Tom Masland, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who spent decades covering Haiti, Africa and the Middle East, died in Manhattan Thursday of injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was 55.

Masland was a contributing senior editor for Newsweek.com, where he began work last month after 15 years reporting for Newsweek about topics including Haiti, southern and central Africa and terrorism in the Middle East.

Masland was awarded a Pulitzer along with other staff at The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1980 for the newspaper's coverage of the Three Mile Island disaster. He worked for the Inquirer for 11 years until 1986. His assignments included time as the newspaper's Middle East correspondent in Beirut.

As a foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune from 1986 to 1990, Masland covered famine in Ethiopia, a massacre in Burundi in 1988 and the Persian Gulf War.

He joined Newsweek in 1990, became a senior writer four years later for the international section and was named Africa regional editor and South Africa bureau chief in 1999.

In 1994, he shared the Free Press Association's Mencken Award for a 1993 Newsweek cover story on slavery. He was injured by flying shrapnel from an explosion while covering an uprising in Liberia in 2003.

Masland, of Englewood, N.J., was on his way to play saxophone at a club Monday when a sport utility vehicle struck him as he crossed the street on Manhattan's Upper West Side, authorities said.

He is survived by his wife, Gina, three sons, his mother and three siblings.

``As anyone who has worked with him knows, Tom was a very kind and honorable man in addition to a valued and courageous reporter,'' Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker said. ``He was always there for his colleagues in times of need.''

Out of the close group of 16 I knew from when I was a Teen to now, there are only 7 of us that are left. Some where shot, drove off Mt. Baldy road, Cancer, killed in Chino Prison, car/motorcycle accident, boating accident, electrocuted........

Not one has died in their sleep.

Is “miered” the new “borked”?

Robert Bork’s failed nomination to the Supreme Court in 1987 spawned the verb “borked,” defined loosely as getting rejected in an unseemly, even unfair, manner.

Now there is talk online about whether Harriet Miers’ withdrawal of her nomination to the high court will give rise to the term “miered.”

While liberals led to the opposition to Bork, it was conservatives who brought down Miers’ nomination.

A contributor to The Reform Club, a right-leaning blog, wrote that to get “borked” was “to be unscrupulously torpedoed by an opponent,” while to get “miered” was to be “unscrupulously torpedoed by an ally.”

Four found dead in apparent murder-suicide

http://www.nynewsday.com/news/local/bronx/nyc-dead1028,0,3997897,print.story?coll=nyc-manheadlines-bronx

A mother, father and their two young children were found dead in a Morningside Heights apartment Thursday night, overcome by carbon monoxide set off by six pots holding burning charcoal in a sealed bedroom in an apparent murder-suicide, police said.

The body of the father, Fred Wang, 42, was found on the floor of the bedroom, its door draped with a blanket, and the mother, Christine, also 42, was found together on the bed with her children, Dennis, 8, and Serena, 6, police said. It appears that they had been there for a few days, police said.

A cousin of the dead mother discovered the grisly scene at 6:30 p.m. after being alerted to a troubling letter a relative received in Taiwan about the family, police said.

A building superintendent said the letter was received by another daughter of the dead woman. A police official told the Associated Press that the father was depressed over a failed business venture and planned to commit suicide.

Neighbors said the father ran a New Jersey-based commodities trading firm, and the woman stayed at home with the children.

Thursday night, the cousin tried to enter one bedroom, and found she couldn't get in, and then entered the apartment's second bedroom, where she found the mother, 85, of the dead woman, who was ill after being overcome by the smoke, but apparently not aware of what had happened to her family, police said. She was being treated at St. Luke's Hospital.

The cousin alerted authorities to the scene in the 21-story apartment building, 549 W. 123rd St., just blocks from Columbia University.

Neighbors said the children attended the prestigious St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's in Morningside Heights. Another building superintendent said school employees contacted him Wednesday morning about the children's absense.

He said the grandmother answered the door that morning, but he had to find a neighbor who cou

When the administration took office Richard Clarke was kept on staff. But his position was *downgraded* so that as national counterterrorism coordinator he no longer reported directly to Cabinet-level officials....

===============================================

In addition, FEMA has seen an exodus of experienced officials over the past four years. By the time Katrina struck, three senior positions were either vacant or filled on an "acting" basis, including the director running Katrina-ravaged Mississippi and Alabama.

The reasons for most of the departures are unclear. But since 2003, FEMA has been *downgraded* — swallowed up by the new Homeland Security Department, created to protect the nation from terrorism. The shift is logical. Responding to a major terrorist attack has a lot in common with responding to a natural disaster. But instead of building on the existing disaster response system, terrorism became a new and largely separate focus...

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:13 AM

Yeah, films get overpraised like it was the 2nd coming or something, and it usually turns out to be shit or average.

A couple of years ago The Blair Witch Project was overrated to high hell. It's actually a rip-off of an Italian film, Cannibal Holocaust. Holocaust has the same story thread of finding footage of documentary filmmakers, except Holocaust has some brains behind it, and is as intense as hell.

I remember seeing Blair in the theater, and all the patrons were feeling the same way I was that it was shit. But there was one girl crying her eyes out at the end. Maybe she thought it was real. It wasn't.

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:17 AM

25 years ago, Ebert was on PBS, doing a local show called Sneak Previews. He was much more sarcastic and demanding than he is today.

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:19 AM

The only thing that was a novelty for me (regarding the Blair Witch Project), was that it was the only movie that's ever given me motion sickness.

Posted by: Waiting for Cicero at October 28, 2005 5:23 AM

As far as Ebert goes, maybe he just got tired of watching Hollywood movies get worse and worse, and just decided on blanket amnesty.

Then again, maybe it's just in his paychecks best interests to give the old thumbs up. Hmm...

Posted by: Waiting for Cicero at October 28, 2005 5:27 AM

All that hand held camerawork can be nauseating. That used to be cutting edge, but now, everyone does it.

Holocaust only had its "found" footage shot like that. The story centered around a professor from NYU going to track down 4 documentary filmmakers who disappeared filming the cannibal tribes of the Amazon. He finds out they're dead, but he finds their footage. He takes it back to NYU and screens it.

The filmmakers had to go to court and prove that they didn't actually kill any humans in the film, it's that intense and realistic (especially the "found" footage)...

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:27 AM

I think your 2nd assertion is probably the truth. People won't want to tune in to your show if you're too negative.

This may be heresy to some, but one of the most overrated films I think is Pulp Fiction. I never thought I was witnessing 2001 or Citizen Kane. It's not a terrible film, but it's OK. Entertaining, interesting, but not collosal. And the dialogue is silly, for the most part.

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:32 AM

Ewww... I'll have to see it then. I like the concept, Blair was just poorly done. Kinda the same thing that happened with the The Ring/Ringu

Posted by: Waiting for Cicero at October 28, 2005 5:34 AM

The 1990's didn't produce many cinematic masterpieces. It produced dumb teenage comedies and childish films (like Sandler's work and the Farrelly Brothers)....

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:35 AM

Didn't see The Ring. Saw Ringu, though. It was OK.

I really like Cure, a film by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Really creepy and atmospheric.

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:39 AM

I like the phrase cinematic endurance test. It refers to films that are very difficult to sit through.

Cannibal Holocaust is one of those.

Show it to someone you don't want hanging around your home...

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:41 AM

I didn't see Pulp Fiction until about four years ago. Prior to that, had seen Reservoir Dogs, Dusk till Dawn (WOW did that suck!), Jackie Brown, etc. So I kept expecting to be this great flick, and was so bummed when I watched it, that I wished it had simply never happened. It had some wonderfully ridiculous dialog, but I liked Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown better. Favorite line: "Be cool , Hunny-Bunny!"

Posted by: Waiting for Cicero at October 28, 2005 5:41 AM

Show it to someone you don't want hanging around your home...

LOL. Will do.

Incidentally, imdb.com says that Pulp Fiction is "Hands down, the best film of the '90s." Ebert at work again?

Posted by: Waiting for Cicero at October 28, 2005 5:45 AM

Reservoir Dogs is the best out of that bunch, even though it doesn't bare close scrutiny. From Dusk til Dawn reeked! Jackie Brown was OK. Kill Bill Vol. One was OK, but Volume 2 was shit. One of the grandest exercises in self indulgence I've ever seen. It could have easily been edited into a 2 1/2 hour movie.

The dialogue is ridiculous in Pulp. It's not that great of a film. I like the pacing of the film (nice and leisurely), but that's it.

Posted by: Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat at October 28, 2005 5:46 AM

Sounds like something Ebert would say. Best film of the 90's? I don't think so.

Okay... maybe this...

No source is echoing The New York Times, except Drudge... who, as usual, doesn't have his own sources and is just echoing the times.

The AP isn't even close, really,

~~~~~
Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald signaled Thursday he might simply keep Rove under investigation, according to a person familiar with recent developments in the case who requested anonymity because of its sensitivity. That would spare Rove bad news Friday when the grand jury that has heard the case for two years is set to expire.
~~~~~

"signaled Thursday he might simply keep Rove under investigation"

He could say that, having Rove's indictment sealed along with Libby's. He might have told Rove's lawyers to tell Karl to sleep on the plea bargain.

I, and some others who are right a lot more often than I am, DO NOT see this as differing from reports earlier in the week and DO NOT see that it necessarily precludes a Rove indictment today... Fitzmas.

That "might" could be exactly what he told Rove.

The Times is the only original source subtituting "will" for "might".

Once you remember that Fitz has been seeing Rove's legal team about plea bargains all week, and that so far, Rove has said no... it transforms that "might" from a message to the press... into a message for Karl himself.

Posted by: Fishgrease at October 28, 2005 6:33 AM

After 2 years Fitzgerald can't indict Rove? Who are we kidding here? We don't want to rush you Fitz. need more time? How about 3 more years. You have only had the two years so far. The fix is in! They all got their heads together and figured this Scooter is the minimum they must throw in. He steps down, gets a fine, and goes to work for Halliburton making half a million a year. It's the same old game. I should have known this from the start!

Posted by: Another Sucker at October 28, 2005 7:04 AM

Fitzgerald was supposed to be this unblinking prosecutor. Fearlessly attacking the White House inner circle. Sure thing, more like a fox going into the hen-house and still coming out hungry. This is starting to stink!

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at October 28, 2005 7:14 AM

If this was you or me, they would spend about 10 minutes on the case. Because that is how long it would take to type up the indictments. But Noooooooooo! After two years we just can't figure out what Bush's political adviser was doing during all of this. We are just drawing a blank here!

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at October 28, 2005 7:20 AM

You know, this case may just stay a mystery. Like O.J. looking for the men who killed his wife. Fitz may spend the rest of life looking for they guy who attacked Wilson and his wife. Fitz might want to look at the Country Club. Or maybe down on a island in the Caribbean. Or how about he just sleeps on it for a while!

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at October 28, 2005 7:32 AM

~~~ This is starting to stink! ~~~
Yeah... and the Baby Jesus has been in on it for over 2000 years. I still haven't seen anything saying Rove won't be indicted today... except for the Times.
Robert Fisk: War is the "Total Failure of the Human Spirit"
AMY GOODMAN: Robert Fisk, we are out of time but I just have a quick question, perhaps--
ROBERT FISK: Thank goodness.
AMY GOODMAN: And that is, you've covered the Israeli invasions of Lebanon, the Iranian Revolution, the Iran-Iraq war, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Gulf war, wars in Algeria, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the invasion and occupation of Iraq--
ROBERT FISK: Enough, enough, enough.
AMY GOODMAN: What gives you hope? What gives you hope?
ROBERT FISK: Nothing. I’m sorry. Nothing. I’m sorry. Nothing at the moment. Ordinary people, I guess. Ordinary people who speak out. People in the Arab world as well. But in terms of governments, nothing much. I may be wrong. I may be too much of a pessimist because I've seen too much.
AMY GOODMAN: Robert Fisk, author of “The Great War for Civilization: The Conquest of the Middle East," reports for the Independent newspaper for 30 years, based in the Middle East.
