Saint becomes sinner

The really surprising finding came with the calculation that during the heatwave, European plants and their ecosystems were putting more carbon dioxide into the air than they were absorbing.

"In the past we expected that climate change would benefit European ecosystems because growth tends to be limited by the short growing season," said Andrew Friend, "but this analysis hadn't taken into account the possibility of extreme events.

"The conclusion of our study is that this extreme event meant a loss of carbon across Europe - a loss which undoes many years of net uptake."

Plants can absorb and emit carbon dioxide and oxygen; the process of respiration takes oxygen in and releases CO2, whereas in photosynthesis, the reverse happens.

Other parts of the ecosystem such as soil bacteria can also contribute to the overall flow of these gases to and from the atmosphere.

During an average year, the net effect is that European plants absorb around 125 million tonnes of carbon (MtC).

But in 2003, according to this analysis, they released 500 MtC to the atmosphere.

By comparison, global emissions from burning fossil fuels amounts to about 7,000 MtC; by giving rather than taking, European plants were adding about 10% to the global total.

"This shows that short-term climatic events such as the 2003 heatwave occurring over regional areas like Europe can have major effects on the climate globally," commented Julia Slingo.

The heat to come

The wider context for all this is a study published last year suggesting that summers as hot and dry as that of 2003 will become commonplace as the global climate changes.

"We concluded that on a middle-of-the-road scenario for emissions - assuming we don't do very much to combat climate change - temperature heatwaves as high as the one in 2003 would be occurring every other year by middle of this century," said Dr Myles Allen of Oxford University.

"By the end of the century, 2003 would be a cool year."

Plants could of course adapt to the changing climate, meaning that the switch from net absorption of CO2 to net production might not happen.

But, said

British "Undercover Soldiers" Caught driving Booby Trapped Car

A report of Al Jazeera TV, which preceeded the raid on the prison, suggests that the British undercover soldiers were driving a booby trapped car loaded with ammunition. The Al Jazeera report (see below) also suggests that the riots directed against British military presence were motivated because the British undercover soldiers were planning to explode the booby trapped car in the centre of Basra:

DEMS FOLDING LIKE CHEAP SUIT TALK ABOUT THIS!

ROBERTS IS NOT FIT TO SIT ON THE BENCH!

CANON 2: A JUDGE SHALL AVOID IMPROPRIETY AND THE APPEARANCE OF IMPROPRIETY INALL OF THE JUDGE'S ACTIVITIESA. A judge shall respect and comply with the law* and shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.

Commentary:

Public confidence in the judiciary is eroded by irresponsible or improper conduct by judges. A judge must avoid all impropriety and appearance of impropriety. A judge must expect to be the subject of constant public scrutiny. A judge must therefore accept restrictions on the judge's conduct that might be viewed as burdensome by the ordinary citizen and should do so freely and willingly.
The prohibition against behaving with impropriety or the appearance of impropriety applies to both the professional and personal conduct of a judge. Because it is not practicable to list all prohibited acts, the proscription is necessarily cast in general terms that extend to conduct by judges that is harmful although not specifically mentioned in the Code. Actual improprieties under this standard include violations of law, court rules or other specific provisions of this Code. The test for appearance of impropriety is whether the conduct would create in reasonable minds a perception that the judge's ability to carry out judicial responsibilities with integrity, impartiality and competence is impaired. See also Commentary under Section 2C.
B. A judge shall not allow family, social, political or other relationships to influence the judge's judicial conduct or judgment. A judge shall not lend the prestige of judicial office to advance the private interests of the judge or others; nor shall a judge convey or permit others to convey the impression that they are in a special position to influence the judge. A judge shall not testify voluntarily as a character witness.

In my emails I suggested that an example of impropriety would be a district court judge sitting on a case between 3m and a citizen and interviewing for the post of General Counsel with 3m and deciding the case in favor of 3m. Sound like i

If you recall, It was the first year after our illegal invasion (of our illegal ex-puppet dicator Saddam's country).

The people there got sick of Bush's do nothing/ talk a great game policies.

The difference between the American people and the Iraqi people is that the undefeatable untiring proud people of Iraq KNOW a miserable tyrant when they are living under one.

Here in a Real democratic loving America people would be mortering the House of Representatives as they are outside the 'green zone'.

Importance of environmental indicators.

How did Native Americans KNOW Hurricanes were imminent?

The Native Americans were "PART" of the environment...the Magnificent Frigate Bird would "Tell" whoever spotted the bird that a Hurricane was imminent. For those of you that dont know, a Magnificent Frigate Bird is a DEEP SEA bird and is ONLY seen hundreds of miles out at Sea OR ahead of hurricanes. Only those with eyes can see.

Brown Creepers tell me when an Artic Blue Norther is a day away from Texas. (17 degrees or lower)...too bad for me that the Brown Creeper has disapeared due to habitat destruction. Nature tells me many things that are not taught in schools

Brunious ended up at the convention center. He slept on the floor for four days, hungry, thirsty and in constant fear of being attacked by marauding youths.

"I would say that the city, state and national government just turned their backs on us because we didn't get anything to eat or drink, there was no law and order, and no plan," Brunious said by telephone from a New Jersey hotel that was temporarily housing some of the band.

After the National Guard arrived, Brunious was bused to Houston, then Dallas, and eventually an evacuation center in Conway, Ark. Volunteers gave him some clothes and helped him contact Jaffe. A Little Rock music store owner loaned him a trumpet.

Brunious landed on Sept. 9, in the middle of a BET telethon that included a Preservation Hall performance at the end. Brunious normally would have sung the lyrics to "New Orleans" (made famous by Louis Armstrong), but a bad cough prevented him from performing. He yielded the lyrics to banjo player Carl Le Blanc.

"We're not going to let a hurricane stop our music. This music is too important to the musicians and people of New Orleans, and to the people of the world," Brunious said. "This music is our treasure and we want to share it."

Experts Say Faulty Levees Caused Much of Flooding

By Michael Grunwald and Susan B. Glasser
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, September 21, 2005; Page A01

this article reveals a study that argues the levees were NOT breached but failed due to a 'pressure blast'. I heard a report that an army corps diver found evidence of explosive residue.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity said "We found traces of boron-enhanced fluoronitramino explosives as well as PBXN-111 embedded in the debris. This would indicate at least two separate types of explosive devices."

The portion of levee that failed was steel and concrete, not earth! I don't know about any of you, but I've never seen steel and concrete stretch "like a membrane." In fact, the ABC New video which is part of this story, shows the steel and concrete. Concrete is twisted, ripped and shattered. Hardly the effect of water.
http://www.halturnershow.com/DiversFindExplosiveResidueOnRupturedLevy.html

what if the bush crime family set the levees to flood the HUD housing so they could give that government owned land away to their luxury condo developer buddies?

“15¢ per gallon”

“We also can learn something from each other, why is it you are paying $5 for a gallon of gas, in Venezuela they are paying fifteen cents a gallon. Because the government’s priority is to invest in the people. They subsidize oil, gas, health care and education, and that’s civil.

We cannot subsidize our oil and education because we’re investing in tax cuts for the wealthy and a war that does not make sense in Iraq. We need new values, we need to go another way. ”

Greg. Close, but not quite right. The Stargate is in Pakistan now. It is much smaller than the one that is on the TV show. It is what OBL is using to avoid being caught. I mean really, how else can we explain that the most technically sophisticated and highly trained military in the world couldn't find him? He had to be OFF WORLD.

Otherwise they would just be incompetent or WANTED OBL to remain at large and that is just...CRAZY. Who would do that? The OFF World story is much more sound.

Oh and another thing. Did you know that we used alien technology to stop flight 93? They did a great job of covering it up, but they couldn't cover up the 3 minutes between the seismic data and the "official time" when the crash occurred. They can go back into time like the TV show "7 Days" only that show also got it wrong. We can go back in time and space only 3.1415 minutes (Yes, the time is related to pi.) The energy requirements are huge since we don't have a vacuum energy or micro-singularity as a power source. If we did we could go back in time further.
Well as usual I've said too much, but since part of my job is to spread disinformation with the real information just to confuse people, you know what I'm talking about.

One diver, a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, saw the burn marks and knew immediately what caused them. When he surfaced and showed the evidence to his superior, the on-site Coordinator for FEMA stepped-in and said "You are not here to conduct an investigation as to why this rupture occurred, but only to determine how best to close it." The FEMA coordinator then threw the evidence back into the water and said "You will tell no one about this."

At that point, the diver went back down to do more inspection of the levee. On the second dive, he secreted a small chunk of the debris inside his wet suit and later arranged for it to be sent to trusted military friends at a The U.S. Army Forensic Laboratory at Fort Gillem, Georgia for testing.

Hurricane Drink Recipe

2 ounces amber rum
1/4 cup passion fruit juice, or 1 tablespoon passion fruit syrup
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
1/2 teaspoon grenadine
Juice of 1/2 lime
Cherries and orange slice to garnish
Ice cubes

In a cocktail shaker mix the rum, passion fruit juice and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Add the grenadine, and lemon juice and stir to combine. Add the ice cubes and shake. Strain Hurricane into a cocktail glass. Garnish with orange and cherries. Yield: 1 serving

Interesting tidbits of the origin of this famous drink:

The creation of this passion-colored relative of a Daiquiri drink is credited to Pat O'Brien. He is reported to have invented the Hurricane in the 1940s in New Orleans. Rumors say he needed to get rid of all the rum that Southern distributors forced him to buy before he could get a few cases of other spirits. He poured the concocosion into hurricane-lamp-shaped glasses and gave it away to sailors. The drink caught on, and it's been part of the celebration ever since.

Pat O'Brien operated a speakeasy during prohibition known as, "Mr. O'Brien's Club Tipperary". The password to get in was, "storm's brewin'". In 1933, after the repeal of prohibition, he moved across the street, opened Pat O'Briens, and later down to the present location at 718 St. Peter, in the French Quarter. During W.W.II, it was difficult to get whiskey, but rum was in ample supply. With the help of the liquor salesman, this cocktail was born. It is served in a 26 oz. Hurricane glass, which is named after the shape of a hurricane lamp and the drink.

Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said he talked to Justice O'Connor about staying on the high court. ``She's prepared to do that'' through the court's term ending in June, Specter said. The president ``was noncommittal,'' Specter said. ``The body language was not very positive,'' Specter said.

Specter said the delay would give Congress and the rest of America more time to know John Roberts as chief justice. ``When we know a little more about Judge Roberts it's going to be easier with the next'' nomination, Specter said.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said he urged Bush to submit a name to the Senate promptly. ``I feel we should proceed with the nomination as anticipated,'' Frist said. If so, the confirmation process could be completed ``around Thanksgiving.''

O'Connor, 75, often a key swing vote on the Supreme Court, announced on July 1 that she is retiring and agreed to stay on until her replacement is confirmed. She has said she wants to help care for her husband, John O'Connor, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

According to the New York Times, Dr. Shea Penland of the Pontchartrain Institute was surprised because the break was "along a section that was just upgraded. It did not have an earthen levee, it had a vertical concrete wall several feet thick."

It also seems that the broken section of the Industrial Canal levee was having "construction" work done on it recently.

What is interesting is Sam wanting to be polite.

This is an instinct that a lot of the press still have with their republican overlords. As much as some people think the press are liberal rabid dogs in a pack, often times they are timid writers who don't want to get into arguments with politicians. They would rather play the "I'm your buddy" game with the politicos so they can have access in the future.

Also, they have seen their associates who do question the republicans get yelled at and their access cut off. (ABC reporters aren't allowed to be on Dick Cheney's plane. Did you know that?)

They republicans want the media to think that they are beholden to 'access' in order to get the story and that the media needs the politician more than the politician needs the media. If they equation is reveresed then they wouldn't have to kowtow

AIR AMERICA BUYS THE RIGHT WING MEDIA CON JOB ON ROBERTS

for weeks the corporate crony media has been beating the drums that Roberts was a foregone conclusion and could not be stopped. for shame, for shame, Sam, to hear these words, scripted by Karl Rove personally, to be coming out of your own mouth.

IT IS NOT OVER UNTIL THE PEOPLE THROW IN THE TOWEL

did you ever hear of a sports team that looked like they were way behind and then in the 4th quarter or last inning they mounted a rally and turned the whole thing around? all we have to do is call our members of Congress and tell them how outraged we are and the week-kneed "roll-over like a collie in heat" democrats can turn right around and announce that they have been hearing from their constituents and they are changing their votes. here's the Senate toll-free number, call it right now and ask for your Senator's offices and they'll put you right through.

877-762-8762

go to the action site, send an email to all your members of Congress at once. DO IT or kiss Roe goodbye forever.

Pentagon blocks military officer's appearance at hearing concerning pre-9/11 intelligence

By KIMBERLY HEFLING Associated Press Writer

(AP) - WASHINGTON-The Department of Defense forbade a military intelligence officer to testify Wednesday about the work of a secret military unit that identified four 9/11 hijackers more than a year before the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks, according to the man's attorney.

In written testimony prepared for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, attorney Mark Zaid, who represents Lt. Col. Anthony Shaffer, said the Pentagon also refused to permit testimony there by a defense contractor that he also represents.

The Judiciary Committee was scheduled to hear testimony about the work of a classified unit code named "Able Danger."

In his prepared remarks, Zaid was ready to say on behalf of Shaffer and contractor John Smith that Able Danger, using data mining techniques, identified four of the terrorists who struck on Sept. 11, 2001 - including mastermind Mohamed Atta.

"At least one chart, and possibly more, featured a photograph of Mohamed Atta," Zaid said in his prepared remarks.
