SPY VS. SPY
On Sunday's CNN Late Edition, Senator Pat Roberts repeated the tired, faulty talking point that Valerie Wilson couldn't possibly have been a covert agent if she was working at a desk at CIA headquarters. Because proper spies wear long trenchcoats, wide-brimmed hats, and dark sunglasses while sipping espresso at a sidewalk cafe in Prague.
Roberts has no excuse for the lie: he's chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Former CIA and Majority Report guest Larry Johnson slaps him down at TPM Cafe here.

Pentagon Blocks Release of Abu Ghraib Images: Here's Why
So what is shown on the 87 photographs and four videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon, in an eleventh hour move, blocked from release this weekend? One clue: Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told Congress last year, after viewing a large cache of unreleased images: "I mean, I looked at them last night, and they're hard to believe.” They show acts "that can only be described as blatantly sadistic, cruel and inhumane," he added.
A Republican Senator suggested the same day they contained scenes of “rape and murder.” No wonder Rumsfeld commented then, "If these are released to the public, obviously it's going to make matters worse."

White House Aims to Block Legislation on Detainees
The Bush administration in recent days has been lobbying to block legislation supported by Republican senators that would bar the U.S. military from engaging in "cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment" of detainees, from hiding prisoners from the Red Cross, and from using interrogation methods not authorized by a new Army field manual.

Roberts' rules put U.S. at risk
As the Senate deliberates the qualifications of Judge John Roberts Jr. for elevation to the nation's high court, it should closely consider the implications of one case decided this month that will probably receive short shrift, because it isn't one he authored, but merely joined.

If this country overwhelmingly rejected it ... rather than rationalizing it ... we might actually get back to the point where other countries only hate our leaders ... and not all of us.

JOE HILL
I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night
Alive as you and me
Says I, "But Joe, you're ten years dead,"
"I never died," says he, "I never died," says he.
"In Salt Lake, Joe, by God," says I
Him standing by my bed,
"They framed you on a murder charge."
Says Joe, "But I ain't dead," says Joe, "But I
ain't dead."
"The copper bosses shot you, Joe,
They killed you, Joe," says I.
"Takes more than guns to kill a man,"
Says Joe, "I didn't die," says Joe, "I didn't die."
And standing there as big as life
And smiling with his eyes
Joe says, "What they forgot to kill
Went on to organize, went on to organize."
"Joe Hill ain't dead," he says to me,
"Joe Hill ain't never died.
Where workingmen are out on strike
Joe Hill is at their side, Joe Hill is at their side."
"From San Diego up to Maine
In every mine and mill
Where workers strike and organize,"
Says he, "You'll find Joe Hill," says he, "You'll
find Joe Hill."

Bush aide waited to inform staff of CIA leak probe Mon Jul 25, 1:20 AM ET
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said on Sunday that he immediately told White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card -- but delayed telling others -- when the Justice Department launched an investigation into who leaked the identity of a CIA operative.
Gonzales, who at the time was White House counsel, told CBS's "Face the Nation" that he waited until the next morning to discuss the issue with President Bush and to formally notify the rest of the White House staff, requiring them to preserve any materials connected to the investigation.
Democratic Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record) of Delaware said the approximately 12-hour delay in notification "raises a lot of questions" about whether some White House officials could have received an early warning from Card.
"The real question now is, who did the chief of staff speak to? Did the chief of staff pick up the phone and call (Bush political adviser) Karl Rove? Did the chief of staff pick up the phone and call anybody else?" Biden said.
Democrats have urged Bush to fire Rove or revoke his access to classified information after a reporter said he was a source about the identity of the CIA agent, Valerie Plame, in 2003. The leak came after Plame's husband, former diplomat Joseph Wilson, accused the White House of twisting intelligence to justify the Iraq war.
It is against the law in some cases to knowingly reveal the identity of an undercover CIA officer.
A New York Times columnist reported on Sunday that Gonzales was notified about the investigation on the night of Sept. 29, 2003, but waited 12 hours before telling the White House staff about the inquiry.
Asked about the report on CBS, Gonzales said his office was notified about the investigation at about 8:00 p.m. and that he had his staff "go back to the Department of Justice lawyers and ask them, 'Do you want us to notify the staff now, immediately, or would it be OK to notify the staff early in the morning?"'
Posted by: toniD at July 25, 2005 7:41 AM
And we were advised, go ahead and notify the staff early in the morning, that would be OK," Gonzales said. "Most of the staff had gone home. No one knew about the investigation."
But Gonzales said he did tell one person at the White House -- Card.
Gonzales said he told the president first thing the next morning, "and shortly thereafter, there was notification sent out to all the members of the White House staff."
Biden said: "I don't doubt the attorney general's sincerity. But it does seem to me it wasn't the soundest of judgments."

Leak Investigation: The Russert Deal—What It Reveals
Aug. 1 issue - A deal that special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald cut last year for NBC "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert's testimony may shed light on the emerging White House defense in the Valerie Plame leak case. The agreement between Fitzgerald and NBC avoided a court fight over a subpoena for Russert's testimony about his July 2003 talk with Dick Cheney's top aide, Lewis (Scooter) Libby. The deal was not, as many assumed, for Russert's testimony about what Libby told him: it focused on what Russert told Libby. An NBC statement last year said Russert did not know of Plame, wife of ex-ambassador Joseph Wilson, or that she worked at the CIA, and "he did not provide that information to Libby."
This now appears significant: in pursuing Russert's testimony, Fitzgerald was testing statements by White House aides—reportedly including Libby—that they learned about Wilson's wife from reporters, not classified documents. Libby's lawyer did not respond to requests for comment. A source close to Karl Rove, who requested anonymity because the FBI asked participants not to comment publicly, says the White House aide—who passed info about Wilson's wife to Time's Matt Cooper—only knew about her CIA job from either a reporter or "somebody" who heard it from a reporter; he can't remember which or who. Rove did not initially discuss his talk with Cooper with the FBI, but later volunteered info about it and called agents' attention to a subpoenaed e-mail he had written to national-security aide Stephen Hadley mentioning the conversation, the source said.
The emerging White House defense is important in light of recent attention on a classified State Department memo that had key info about Wilson's wife. The memo, dated June 10, 2003, was labeled top secret at the top of the first page; a paragraph referring to "Valerie Wilson" at the CIA had the letters snf in front of it, for "Secret No Foreign," meaning the info is secret and can't be shared with any foreign national, says a government official who reviewed it but asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the material. The memo was taken by Secretary of State Colin Powell aboard Air F

John Bolton, R.I.P.
John Bolton will never be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Whether he should be or not is no longer the question. Whether the "temperament" charges against him were fair or if he was just a victim of Chris Dodd's pro-Cuba fetish doesn't matter.
It is now politically impossible. On Friday, individual clouds that had been drifting around for months -- in some cases, years -- finally merged into a media perfect storm. It is now raging. Whether he knows it or not, Bolton has been thrown overboard as far more significant players start working overtime before the ship of state begins taking on water.
Bolton arch-nemesis Steve Clemons called it at the beginning of the month: The announced retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor effectively killed Bolton's chances -- at least at a Senate confirmation. I thought that, still -- even despite Democrats holding firm in refusing to allow cloture on the nomination (even post "Gang of 14" filibuster deal), the White House was still pushing the pick -- and seemed to be moving toward the recess appointment contingency.
But then consider what has become known -- and what new questions have arisen -- in the last 48 hours: Richard Keil of Bloomberg News reports that special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald maybe looking at testimony of Karl Rove and Scooter Libby that could be in conflict with testimony given by various journalists.
Posted by: toniD at July 25, 2005 9:07 AM
That suddenly brings into sharp focus the possibility that Rove and Libby may be facing serious legal trouble. On top of that, the Times story Friday discusses the State Department memo that clearly identified Valerie Plame (Wilson) as being undercover with the CIA -- and whether former press secretary Ari Fleischer had access to it.
Then, as Josh Marshall points out, as part of her confirmation hearings for a State Department public relations position, Karen Hughes was, by law, obligated to answer a questionnaire, that among other things, asked whether there were any legal proceedings to which she might be a be part of: She admitted that she had testified before Fitzgerald's grand jury. Marshall points out, Bolton answered "no" on the questionnaire -- though, it turns out he also testified before the grand jury on the contents of the Plame memo.
If Bolton intentionally misled the Senate in his questionnaire, he's toast. End of story. But, that's relevant to the big picture.
The key is revealed in Clemons' latest post: He asserts that Bolton was a major source for NYT's Judith Miller, currently incarcerated for refusing to surrender a source's name to the Fitzgerald grand jury. Now, one has to toss in a couple of caveats here: Steve, of course, has to depend on an anonymous source that somehow "knows" that Bolton was an anonymous source for many of Miller's stories.

Ha ha..
I want Hillary to explain to Janeane why we must find common ground with the religious right..
Maybe Hillary will give Janeane one of her many bibles..
Posted by: War Dog at July 25, 2005 9:10 AM
Still, bringing it all together: DC now has two major players potentially facing legal peril, a reporter in jail -- and the most contentious confirmation process ever for a nominee to the United Nations. But the link of Bolton to Miller -- and thus to the Plame-Rove story -- is what can turn a confusing, "silly summer season" story into Washington nuclear pyrotechnics.
The other new wild card? SCOTUS nominee John Roberts.
His existence makes it impossible for the White House to recess appoint Bolton: If that were to occur, with speculation of Bolton possibly deceiving the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on top of the fact that he might be the source that Miller is protecting, Democrats would go ballistic. Even Democrats supporting Roberts might be inclined to filibuster the nomination in protest.
There's no way the administration would let that occur. Many like Bolton and feel that he is important -- but not so important that they would let an appointment that could only last until January 2007 endanger a lifetime appointee to the Supreme Court and while mustering all other necessary resources on a legal-political fight involving the president and vice president's closest aides. Too much to handle all at once.

U.S. officials have repeatedly declined requests to disclose the number of civilians killed in such incidents. Police in Baghdad say they have received reports that U.S. forces killed 33 unarmed civilians and injured 45 in the capital between May 1 and July 12 — an average of nearly one fatality every two days. Among the biggest threats U.S. forces face are suicide attacks. Soldiers are exposed as they stand watch at checkpoints or ride on patrol in the turrets of their Humvees. South America’s New Militarism
South American societies are militarizing as a result of the regional superpower’s intervention, which is undoubtedly a crucial factor on the continent, but also as a consequence of the profound economic and political changes we have come to call neoliberalism.
The news had little impact on the media, but it demonstrates that Brazil’s armed forces have their own strategic plans and that they see the United States as a potential military enemy.
Last December, Venezuela signed an agreement with Russia to purchase 110,000 Kalashnikov rifles; 33 assault, attack, and heavy transport helicopters, and 50 fighter bombers. It signed another with Spain to acquire naval aeronautical material, including four corvettes; and it signed one with Brazil for 50 training and combat jets. The purchases form part of “the constant updating of the Venezuelan armed forces, their high level of maintenance, and permanent plans for modernization and arms acquisition,” the South American Military Balance study states.2
The news was received with strong criticism from White House Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and the Department of State calls it “the beginning of an arms race.” For its part, the South American nation activated its reserve command last April, “which should reach 2 million members and is included in Venezuela’s new doctrine of defense.”3 The decision was made on April 13, the three-year anniversary of the coup d’etat that drove Hugo Chavez from office during a period of several hours.

Thirteen more governments announce support for Arms Trade Treaty
Source: Amnesty International | Jul 24, 05
New York City - In the last week thirteen more governments have announced their support for the international Arms Trade Treaty at a UN arms control meeting in New York.
The governments of Benin, Colombia, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, the Netherlands, Norway, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain, Turkey, Uganda and the Vatican gave their support, bringing the treaty much closer to being a reality, said campaigners today.
A number of other governments, including the EU countries, some East African states and the Mercosur grouping of Latin American states also made positive statements in favour of stronger export controls based on global minimum standards.
The proposed Arms Trade Treaty has the support of Nobel Laureates and citizens around the world. It would be legally binding and would ban arms transfers if they are likely to contribute to human rights violations or fuel conflict, or undermine development. The treaty would close the loopholes that currently exists between incompatible national arms export laws.

"Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets o fa few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization. I should know; I was an EHM.

After the appearance, the National Republican Senatorial Committee posted items on its Web site asking "Nelson Campaigns With Obama - Does He Agree With Obama's Record Of Lenience On Sexual Predators?" and "Does Nelson Agree With Obama's Refusal To Support Commonsense Measures To Keep Children Safe?" The site then listed votes Obama made as a state senator on issues like sex offenders, pornography and adult businesses near schools.

National's brilliant idea? – privatise water!
Monday, 25 July 2005, 4:13 pm
Press Release: Progressive Party
Grant Gillon, Progressive Party President
So this is National's brilliant idea? – privatise water!
National's promise today that a government it leads will introduce tradable water rights means the party still hasn't given up on his plans to privatize water, says Progressive Party President Grant Gillon.
"People should be very careful when interpreting National's rhetoric about 'improving the incentives for efficient and flexible water use'," he said.
" National is just signaling is that if its leads a coalition government then it will privatize the water supply just as the last National- NZ First government sold the central government's shareholding in Auckland Airport in the name of flexibility and efficiency.
"Why doesn't the party just honestly spell out clearly what its policies mean in ordinary language that every one can understand before they actually cast their votes?" Grant Gillon said.
"Because National knows hardly anyone would vote for the party if they actually knew what its policies entail," he said.

And they're still leaking?
In order for Rove to convince America that he did not use confidential information to smear Wilson for saying things contrary to the Bush Administration in 2003, Rove and his friends are now using confidential or seemingly confidential information to try to smear Wilson and his wife again. He is essentially proving--by his current behavior--that he and his cronies are not only capable of leaking confidential information to smear political opponents, but he would even repeat the same type of behavior against the same victims. Karl Rove either must have a pretty twisted sense of humor, or else think we Americans are stupid.

O' Great Spirit, Whose voice I hear in the winds, And whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me!
I am small and weak, I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty, and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things you have taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
I seek strength not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy myself.
Make me always ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades, as the fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame.

Killer mice ambush endangered seabirds' chicks
Thousands of overgrown house mice are feasting on endangered seabird chicks as they sit helplessly in their nests. The feeding frenzy could spell extinction for populations of birds who breed on the rodent-infested Gough Island in the South Atlantic, conservationists are warning.
The mice are devouring more than one million petrel, albatross and shearwater chicks on the island every year, say researchers from the UK’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

ourselves in the situation of having the left in

If I'm not mistaken, Wilson is a life long Republican and right winger.
The CIA is a right wing entitiy.
But....it is the far right wing that is attacking

They are eating their own and at the same time,
they are making powerful enemies inside our

A first-class lawyer with a sense of humor. Too bad he’s a threat to women’s rights -- and the Constitution.
By Adele M. Stan
It’s hard to know what’s more disturbing about President George W. Bush’s nomination of Judge John Roberts for a seat on the Supreme Court: the man’s sparse paper trail or the loose leaves he’s scattered along the way. Either way, the nomination should give pause, not just to women or African Americans but to all Americans who hold dear the Bill of Rights.
[..]
Not entirely unexpected, the apologists might say, from a mainstream conservative. How mainstream, though, is Roberts’ apparent supportfor the militant anti-abortion group,
Operation Rescue? In 1993, a case was brought to the High Court by a group of abortion providers who accused Operation Rescue and six of its activists of violating a federal civil-rights statute by obstructing patients’ access to women’s health clinics.

Roberts said he would have to recuse himself
Jonathan Turley is a law professor at George Washington University.
July 25, 2005
Judge John G. Roberts Jr. has been called the stealth nominee for the Supreme Court — a nominee specifically selected because he has few public positions on controversial issues such as abortion. However, in a meeting last week, Roberts briefly lifted the carefully maintained curtain over his personal views. In so doing, he raised a question that could not only undermine the White House strategy for confirmation but could raise a question of his fitness to serve as the 109th Supreme Court justice.
The exchange occurred during one of Roberts' informal discussions with senators last week. According to two people who attended the meeting, Roberts was asked by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) what he would do if the law required a ruling that his church considers immoral. Roberts is a devout Catholic and is married to an ardent pro-life activist. The Catholic Church considers abortion to be a sin, and various church leaders have stated that government officials supporting abortion should be denied religious rites such as communion. (Pope Benedict XVI is often cited as holding this strict view of the merging of a person's faith and public duties).
Renowned for his unflappable style in oral argument, Roberts appeared nonplused and, according to sources in the meeting, answered after a long pause that he would probably have to recuse himself.
It was the first unscripted answer in the most carefully scripted nomination in history. It was also the wrong answer. In taking office, a justice takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States. A judge's personal religious views should have no role in the interpretation of the laws.

Hi ♥
Joe Hill sung by Paul Robeson
I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night
Alive as you and me
Says I, "But Joe, you're ten years dead,"
"I never died," says he, "I never died," says he.
"In Salt Lake City, Joe, says I
Him standing by my bed,
"They framed you on a murder charge."
Says Joe, "But I ain't dead," says Joe, "But I ain't dead."
"The copper bosses, killed you, Joe,
They shot you, Joe," says I.
"Takes more than guns to kill a man,"
Says Joe, "I didn't die," says Joe, "I didn't die."
And standing there as big as life
And smiling with his eyes
says Joe, "What they can never to kill
Went on to organize, went on to organize."
"Joe Hill ain't dead," he says to me,
"Joe Hill ain't never died.
Where workingmen defend their rights
Joe Hill is at their side, Joe Hill is at their side."
"From San Diego up to Maine
In every mine and mill
Where workers strike and organize,"
he said, "You'll find Joe Hill," he said, "You'll find Joe Hill."
I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night
Alive as you and me
Says I, "But Joe, you're ten years dead,"
"I never died," says he, "I never died," says he.
"I never died," says he.

Iraq: This is now an unwinnable conflict
As he completes another tour of duty in the chaos of Iraq, award-winning reporter Patrick Cockburn charts how Bush and Blair's 'winnable war' turned into a mess that is inspiring a worldwide insurgency.
The Duke of Wellington, warning hawkish politicians in Britain against ill-considered military intervention abroad, once said: "Great nations do not have small wars." He meant that supposedly limited conflicts can inflict terrible damage on powerful states. Having seen what a small war in Spain had done to Napoleon, he knew what he was talking about.
...
For future historians Iraq will probably replace Vietnam as the stock example of the truth of Wellington's dictum about small wars escalating into big ones. Ironically, the US and Britain pretended in 2003 that Saddam ruled a powerful state capable of menacing his neighbours. Secretly they believed this was untrue and expected an easy victory.

This just in over at anti-war.com. Cheney has asked STRATCOM the air force top brass to draw up a plan to nuke Iran in the event of a second 9/11.
I think we are all barking up the wrong tree now. Cheney will do anything, anything to stay in power and avoid prosecution and humiliation and a good neutering. I beleive he will stage a domestic terror attack, declare martial law and then stage a massive air campaign including the use of nuclear weapons on Iran. It is what these madmen are all working towards. It will also bury the treasongate stories and cause mass panic and hysteria. It is their trump card and I beleive they will use it sooner rather than later.
I would get this out to every Net reader, writer, activist and friend you can think of and head this demon off at the pass.

Testimony of James Marcinkowski
July 22, 2005
"Understandable to all Americans is a simple, incontrovertible, but damning truth:
-The United States government exposed the identity of a clandestine officer working for the CIA.
-This is not just another partisan "dust-up" between political parties.
-This unprecedented act will have far-reaching consequences for covert operations around the world.
-Equally disastrous is that...government officials who have refused to take any responsibility...at the expense of the safety of the American people.
-No government official has that right."

The United States government exposed the identity of a clandestine officer working for the CIA.
================================================
Your typing that does make it so..
Here is the "rest of the story"
================================================
The law clearly states that the operative must have been covert within the last 5 years. Mrs. Wilson has had a desk job at the CIA for the last 6 years. Period, end of story. Jonathan Alter, however, of Nut Case Radio (Air America) and Newsweek says it doesn't matter because operatives typically go in and out of cover and Mrs. Wilson may have wanted to go undercover someday. While this does not matter one tiny bit from a legal, technical point of view, it is especially silly when applied to Mrs. Wilson since she recently gave birth to twins and is an unlikely candidate to be playing agent Jane Bond 007 any time soon.

I think you meant to say "beatifically" or "beautifully."
Every lie must contain some truth in order to convince anyone at all.
For example, Nazism is a form of government and so postulates that some form of government is better than no form of government.
This is but one of the grains of truth there.
Better to ferret out the lies like "racial superiority," the truths will take care of themselves.
Really, such a childish question.

B/c for selfish counterproductive hypocritical wingnuts, admitting that our beloved nitwit war president is an unmitigated failure is not an option.
Hence, the necessity to redefine "success" for a failed presidency to avoid, at all costs, admitting the obvious: transparent, thorough-going and unprecedented failure.
When will we see self-pitying wingnuts put Langston Hughes into bastardized service on the behalf of our beloved nitwit war president?
---
What happens to a [presidency] deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Hi SJ
Just passing through myself.
This investigation is going to lead to cannibalism of the gang from hell.
Some will be loyal bullshitters, and continue spinning the web of deceit, but a case such as this is too important to let lie, and others will come forth realizing what's at stake. We have a case of treason here, and the liars are caught in the crossfire.
War Pup will want to believe otherwise, but he lives in his fantasy and he will continue to sprinkle this blog with inert gases.

Can't stay long, but was wondering what you mean.
A little of "both" what?
Might be that the word "both" is leading me down a wrong-way, but to me "both" means (exclusively) two.
If you are referring to all of Hughes' examples (of which I count five), then I understand you but got lost in the thickets on "both".
If so, no biggie.
If you mean something else, I do not understand what it is.
Do you mean a happy medium betwixt all of Hughes' examples?
(Sarcasm duly noted, if so.)

A Way Out Of Iraq?
Robert Dreyfuss
July 25, 2005
Robert Dreyfuss is a freelance writer based in Alexandria, Va., who specializes in politics and national security issues. He is a contributing editor at The Nation, a contributing writer at Mother Jones, a senior correspondent for The American Prospect, and a frequent contributor to Rolling Stone. His book, Devil's Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam, will be published by Henry Holt/Metropolitan Books in the fall.
Unnoticed by the mainstream media, the man who might hold the key to a political solution of the war in Iraq appeared last week in Washington, D.C., where he met quietly with U.S. government officials and experts on Iraq and made a brilliant presentation at the Middle East Institute. Those looking for an exit strategy for Iraq (see my two-part series for TomPaine.com, The Vietnam Solution and An Iraqi Peace Process ) take note.
Aiham Al Sammarae, Iraq’s former minister of electricity, has stepped forward in Iraq as a key link between the Iraqi resistance and the occupation authorities. At tremendous risk to his own life, Sammarae has opened a dialogue with various Iraqi resistance groups, and he has offered to broker talks between those organizations and either the United States or the Iraqi interim government, or both. Currently, Sammarae, an engineer and CEO of KCI Engineering Consultants, heads the National Assembly for the Unity and Reconstruction of Iraq, an organization of Iraqis seeking to prevent the breakup of the Iraqi state and to find a nonsectarian solution for Iraq’s divisive politics.
Sammarae delivered an astonishing speech and then spoke to me afterward, making it clear that if the United States wants to negotiate a political solution in Iraq, it could do so with an opposition that is neither faceless, nor invisible, nor disorganized. When I asked him about the reception he received from the U.S. government, he smiled, and said, “It was mixed. It depends on who you talk to.” Behind the scenes, other sources say that there are people in the State Department and elsewhere in the U.S. government who are thinking hard about an exit strategy in Iraq
Posted by: Exhausted Blogger at July 25, 2005 2:45 PM
...and who might be receptive to Sammarae’s ideas. Others, predictably at the Pentagon and in the White House, vociferously oppose anything other than the stay-the-course view espoused by President Bush.
According to Sammarae, he and his colleagues have identified 11 major resistance groups, a number of smaller ones and individuals. Each, with the exception of Abu Musab Al Zarqawi’s group, has been invited without preconditions to participate in an opening to seek negotiations with the U.S. occupation forces. Several of the most important resistance leaders gave Sammarae a formal letter declaring their willingness to pursue talks with Baghdad and Washington, based on certain demands. These include a fixed timetable for the withdrawal of the U.S. occupation army and the reduction of Iranian influence, both overt and covert, in Iraqi affairs. “The resistance wants the Americans out,” he said. “And they want the Persians out.”
“We’ve been talking to the insurgents for a long time, probably since a year ago,” he said. “We began by talking to three major groups, and some smaller ones.” When I asked him to put a face on the resistance, he named four major groups: the Jaish Muhammad (Army of Muhammad), Jaish Mujahidin (Army of Freedom Fighters), Jaish Al Islami (The Islamic Army), and the Ansar Al Sunnah (Supporters of the Sunnah). Most of them include former Iraqi military officers, and many are comprised largely of Baathists, especially the Jaish Muhammad, said Sammarae.

On Plame and Rove.
The Repugs claim that Rove outing Plame was not illegal, because "he didn't know she was undercover".
IF ROVE DIDN'T KNOW, IT MEANS *SHE COULD HAVE BEEN UNDERCOVER*, he outed her anyway and that means that Rove still has no excuse.
Plain and simple, Karl Rove outed a CIA officer, her cover company, and her sources, in order to keep Joe Wilson in line for telling the truth and doing his job right.
This is what happens when you take your political adviser into the White House. This directly reflects on Dubya's incompetence.
But I guess it is ok to undermine the war on terror, as long as you are a Republican.
Real Republicans must be spinning.

Depends what you mean by lying. but he certainly tries to paint the occupation as some sort of 'suburban' expansion that is good for the civilized world. Of course at that time MR sophistication is rather low, so they didn't ask anythign about 'torture, land confiscation, the wall, assasination policy, etc'
but during that week there are at least 2 great interview in the series. (one by an Israeli novelist. that one is a must listen. very insightfull) another one is a short cross interview between a palestinian reporter and an Israeli ex mossad I think. That was absolutely ugly. which exemplify the situation.

Wanda: "one by an Israeli novelist. that one is a must listen. very insightfull.."
By that do you mean David Grossman? I think he's on the May 13th broadcast too. If not, do you have dates?
Pinkas seemed to want to gloss over stuff, and he certainly walked in with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, expecting tough questions, but by the end I got the feeling he was being dismissive of both Seder and Garofalo, especially the latter, as ignorant western silverspoons who couldn't possibly comprehend the complexities he was trying to shower upon them. Rather stuffy, he was, but then going up against Seder's daring and brash behavior in the interview - it just really worked for me. Wish there was more of this. Of course, had Garofalo not been so intimidated maybe she would have spoken up more, and if there were a 'rematch' today, I bet both Seder and Garofalo could call him on some of his suppositions.
For example, he was insisting that the majority of Israeli political opinion somehow congealed towards the center after Clinton's failure to instigate a peace process at Camp David. This seemed more like wishful thinking on his part. I would like to have seen Garofalo demand more specific evidence that this was actually the case. Pinkas also wanted Seder and Garofalo to believe that the number of 'extremists' who perceive the end of the world to somehow involve that region directly to be a very small insignificant number, no longer even a part of mainstream political debate in Israel, and I've been led to believe that's a cornerstone of theological thought in the region. Seemed he was describing a world he wanted rather than one that exists, but then, I've never personally been to Israel and he has, so I was just taking him at his word.
Is that what you mean by lying? I'd see it more as a difference of perception.

July 20, 2005: “With the Rove Scandal growing daily as the press starts a feeding frenzy, the obvious failures in Iraq are another source of panic here in the Monkey Palace. A new plan, concocted by two of the Neocon fascists, is to foment a revolution in Iran, cause maximum internal destruction there and probably, note the word “probably,” wreck or delay the dreaded atomic weapons programs obviously in train there. Unfortunately, the Russians, who are now clandestine but effective allies of Iran, have intercepted certain CIA/USIA codes messages from Saudi Arabia that clearly outline the plottings. Russian code breakers are much better than the US code makers and the result is that many of our so-called “unbreakable diplomatic and intelligence” codes are not. It is becoming obvious that utter stupidity reigns here and everyone is aware of it…except the leadership. Talk about the blind leading the blind! The CIA and other intelligence agencies are terrified of crossing the Bush people and wouldn’t dare submit a report that thwarts the Royal Will with the result that there are very unhappy people in Langley and the Pentagon. They see the blindness and fanaticism of the current empire builders as leading us right over a cliff into the abyss. When a bartender at the Cosmos Club is able to discuss all kinds of deep secrets with some of the patrons, as he did with me recently, we have no security left. The DHS is useless and the FBI is fighting everyone for turf, the CIA is quivering with terror and the NSA is doing its dirty work in private. No one is cooperating and the Bush people have created a Byzantine atmosphere that makes any kind of coordination impossible. The Russians and the Arab militants are laughing at us as are the North Koreans, the PRC people and now even the French and British. The latter are stuck, for the time being, with Suckass Blair but it is strongly rumored that his own party is going to dump him…and the UKs participation in the Iraqi Disaster. As far as Bush is concerned, the Imperial wagon train is starting to circle and the frightened Rove is making irrational noises because he knows he will have to be thrown to the wolves if he can’t find a major distraction soon. The Aruba nonsense has about run its course and there is no more Michael Jackson to occupy the trailer park people. They are getting frantic and frantic people, desperate to hang on to what once appeared to be inexorable Imperial power, will do very stupid things. When this happens, the mass of the public will eventually demand their removal and it will then be so.”

Is anyone following his convoluted rhetoric?

Ah. I think I found where the madness is about to start.
Pinkas excuse for the occupation and dismissal is predictable political double talk. Whether it was right for them to do what they did back in the sixties, the fact is they're there now. That's not much of an argument. I am surprised Garofalo didn't call him on it, but perhaps they were both a bit starry-eyed that they'd actually gotten a foreign Consul general to speak with them at all, and were trying to use kid gloves on him.
Come to think of it, Pinkas probably wouldn't accept an interview today, and considering that the world spotlight is off the West Bank and on Iraq... Hrmmm... More support for the conspiracy theory that all this is deliberate, eh? I was looking at a map again today of the region. Weird that what stands between Iraq and Jerusalem is Syria, and that there's been rumors that's where our "peacekeepers" may go next. I see a disturbing pattern.
Purely coincidental, I suppose... eh?

The pinchus interview was delayed several days if I rememebr correctly. The blog was utterly prepared.
(drinking game with punchus, everybody put their guess what stupid cliches shit he is about to put on air)
I think I put mine. 2 of my predictions were correct. (I think it was. Arafat is evil, Palestians are terrorist/Israel the only democracy in ME,... something like that. Can't remember anymore)
Anyway, the whole thing is just a likudniks shill.
(us, good. them, terrorists. kill kill kill.)

But to be fair you had already 'written off' Pinkas before he even opened his mouth, calling him a "Sharon apologist." So your impression of what he had yet to say was discolored by your impression of what you'd read about him before.

He has several audio/video archive from various interviews. (how do you think I could predict what talking points he was spewing?)

CBS News is crowing about the breakup of the AFL-CIO. If labor returns to it's radical roots it might have a chance to survive otherwise the labor movement in America is dead, along with the middle class.

Ooh! There's some good stuff in here:
Jojo: "sam should really bust out with the hebrew or yiddish with this guy."
Balquhidder: "What part of 'thou shalt not kill' do they not understand?"
Bryan: "..they're not sure if an illegal act is a crime."
Wanda: "He is spinning it so fast I don't even know if he say anything. lol."
PeteMoon: "The question of why there are settlements on the West Bank is irrelevant??? Must be, since he immediately changed the subject to settlements in Gaza."
Bowery: "yup. here comes the bible. humalong ""this land is mine, god gave this land to me..."" oy oy
LOL! I'm cracking up!
There's a point where Jojo mentions Sam posting on the board, and compares it to the hand of God reaching down from the heavens, but I can't actually find a post above that where Sam made his godlike appearance.

From Friday through Sunday, Iraq was hit by an unbelievable 15 suicide bombings, one of which, on a Shi'a mosque in Musayyib, killed 98 people. Since the April 28 formation of the new government, car bombings alone have killed close to 1700. Since the United States has a population at least 11 times that of Iraq, this is proportionately something like 6 9/11's that Iraqis have gone through in just the past few months - without even counting deaths, injuries, and torture inflicted by U.S. and Iraqi government forces. According to a justification George Bush gives now and again, this was a deliberate goal of the invasion and these 6 9/11's count as a stunning success of the policy.
This week, Seymour Hersh reports that, according to anonymous military and intelligence sources, during the run-up to the Iraqi elections, George Bush signed a "highly classified Presidential 'finding' authorizing the C.I.A. to provide money and other support covertly to political candidates in certain countries who, in the Administration's view, were seeking to spread democracy." The context in which this finding was made was Iraq and the political candidate who was supposedly "seeking to spread democracy," was none other than the Paul Bremer-appointed strongman Ayad Allawi, whose democratic record includes general thuggery, vicious crackdowns from the Iraqi security forces, attempts to intimidate and suppress the media, and approval of the murderous assault on Fallujah in November - although it's true he has shown no less respect for democracy than his successors.
It's harder and harder for anyone to justify any aspect of the Iraq war unless, like most of the right wing, he takes the position that facts don't matter or, really, don't exist. You simply can't argue that Iraqis are better off - the violence far exceeds that of Saddam's later years, unofficial militias intimidate everyone and restrict basic political freedoms almost as much as Saddam did, and, indeed many basic rights that Saddam guaranteed, especially women's rights, are gone now.

What it is. What we got here in Washington is a poltical mafia outfit. They have joined together to from a new kind of poltical party. This one is modeled after the mafia. Check out Iraq. Case of one crime family taking over another crime family for territory and stealing. At home the Bush crime family have no respect for the law. They are packing the courts with friendly judges. All the while they have bankrupted the government who must have other counrties buy into our Treasury to stay afloat. They use intimidation and fear as tools just like the mafia. The media and journalist and whistleblowers fear telling the truth for fear of the Bush crime family retribution. What it is.

It's a shame I missed the party. I am glad I experienced the interview first with an open mind. I was trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but the more I read in various places on the Web about the affair, the less I can believe this guy is actually a representative for the region. He's clearly out of the loop as to what's been going on there.
Or as you said, he's blatantly lying and trying foolishly to paint the situation so the people he supports won't end up with their heads on the end of a pike. I admit I'm rather naive. I try to expect the best from people at first, until its proven otherwise.
