Plame case is about Iraq

The key issue in the affair has little directly to do with former U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson; or his wife, Valerie Plame; or Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby; or even President George W. Bush's alter ego, Karl Rove. White House v. Wilson/Plame is about Iraq, where our sons and daughters - and many others - are daily meeting violent death in an unwinnable war.

Now it's getting funnier and funnier. The entire Republican Party is shocked (!) anyone would think that Karl Rove (!!) would leak a story to damage a political opponent. Oh, the horror.

Attacking an opponent's wife is standard operating procedure for Rove. Have Republicans actually convinced themselves that he wouldn't do such a thing? People, sometimes party loyalty asks too much.

>>Although Sayyid Qutb started out as a literary critic, he became radicalized on a trip to the United States. Qutb travelled through America from 1948 to 1950, and was shocked at the moral and spiritual degeneracy he observed, stating that "No one is more distant than the Americans from spirituality and piety."

I hear he met with this guy:

Fred Phelps was born in November 13, 1929, in Meridian, Mississippi. Westboro Baptist Church was founded by Fred Phelps' father in 1967. While helping his father run the church, Phelps attempted to work as a lawyer. It became apparent to his peers, however, that Fred Phelps had little regard for ethics, and he was disbarred by the Kansas Supreme Court for ethical violations.

One year after being disbarred, Phelps forcefully gave his wife a crewcut in a drunken rage. He, however, soldiered on, trying to practice law in Federal Court before he was finally disbarred from that in 1989 as well, also for ethical violations. His final disbarrment resulted from a plea deal through which the Federal Court would stop their disbarrment hearings against the rest of his family.

Picketing

The group carries out daily picketing in Topeka, and travels nationally to picket the funerals of homosexual victims of murder, gay-bashing or death related to AIDS, as well as other events related or supposedly related to gay people.

After September 11, Phelps' group went to New York City to protest the rescue efforts going on there. They even brought signs which read "FDNY SIN." Those signs depicted a couple engaged in sodomy. Phelps has repeatedly stated that God hates America as a result of its tolerance of homosexuality, and that the September 11 attacks were an act of divine retribution.

www.godhatescanada.com is a new website launched by Phelps in response to Canada's passage of the controversial Bill C-250, which adds penalties to the Criminal Code of Canada for inciting the hatred of or encouraging the killing of people on the basis of sexual orientation. (Other protected classes include race, religion, ethnic origin, and disability. Gender, surprisingly, is not included.)

This weekend Bush will secretly designate several hundred thousand american citizens as enemy combatants. Joint FBI/Military task forces will arrest these citizens, and ship them to detention centers in mostly western states. Among those arrested will be a preponderance of the staff and on-air talent at Air America Radio; the staff of The Nation; several key members of the DNC, including Howard Dean; and at least two democrat members of the house of representatives. People will fight back and there will be deaths. Others will flee with varying degrees of success. Bush will declare martial law, and congress, cowed by the arrests of two of their own, will capitulate. If they fail to do so, Bush will declare the congress adjourned, and outlaw it. In the months that follow, the media will be reduced to total state control in all aspects, including the internet. Segregation for security and identification will begin, and small towns like south african townships will be used to keep minority ethnic groups "under control" until they're disposed of. Women not the property of fathers, husbands, or brothers, will become the property of the state. All citizens and subcitizens will be required to carry a GPS ID chip implant from birth. Only state sanctioned religion will be tolerated.

This is your current future track. Find a way out while you can.

How is Sen. Frist connected to the 2002 New Hampshire phone-jamming case ?

As you know, here at TPM we've been reporting on the 2002 New Hampshire phone-jamming case for going on three years. There have now been a couple of guilty pleas.

The former executive director of the state GOP is in prison. And, as we were the first to report, Jim Tobin, the former Northeast political director of the NRSC who orchestrated the scam, is now awaiting trial.

Now, in 2002 the NRSC (the National Republican Senatorial Committee) was run by Sen. Frist. Tobin worked for Frist. And Tobin is now under indictment for criminal conspiracy and election tampering for what he did while working as Frist's regional political director for the Northeast.

Not surprisingly, Republicans have tried to distance themselves from Tobin's action, implying that, if guilty, Tobin's scheme was no more than one man's rogue operation. Frist has basically managed to avoid answering any questions about it for two years.

But now comes word that Tobin's legal bills may be being paid by the RNC.

Today's Manchester Union Leader -- not exactly a liberal sheet -- reports that recently filed court documents show that one of Tobin's attorneys was representing him "in his capacity as an employee of the Republican National Committee."

Tobin's attorneys come from Williams & Connolly (a high profile DC firm that represents many in both parties). And the latest RNC disclosure filings show half a million dollars paid to W&C for "legal services."

The money to W&C means little in itself. They probably do various stuff for the RNC.

But most telling, the RNC refused to answer the Union Leader's questions about whether they were paying for Tobin's defense.

Remember, Tobin is under indictment for tampering with a federal election. Two of his alleged co-conspirators have already pled guilty and received jail sentences. Why would the RNC be footing the bill for his defense? And if they're not, why won't they say so?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A judge kicked Arnold Schwarzenegger’s redistricting measure off the special election ballot Thursday, a crushing blow for a proposition that was a centerpiece of the Republican governor’s campaign to reform state government.

The judge ruled that supporters of the proposition violated California’s constitution by using two versions of the initiative in the process of qualifying the measure for the ballot.

“The differences are not simply typographical errors,” Judge Gail Ohanesian said. “They’re not merely about the format of the measure. They are not simply technical. Instead they go to the substantive terms of the measure.”

The proposal, Proposition 77, is one of three initiatives that the Republican governor is supporting in the Nov. 8 special election. It would take the power to draw legislative and congressional districts away from the Legislature and give it to a panel of three retired judges.

May liberals please stop whining that we have a right to privacy. It's not an Individual Right: it's a recognized protection against UNDUE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION.

The Supreme Court ruling in Roe V. Wade:

On abortion, the question was NOT:

"Do you (an individual, a female in particular) have a RIGHT to abortion."

The question WAS:

"Does the GOVERNMENT have any CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY to prevent you from having a medical procedure?"

Period.

Stop begging to keep the right to Privacy. Start remembering that Governments have NO CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY to interfere in one's right to the medical procedure known as abortion.

That's it.

There's another Joe Wilson–related investigation that needs answers: Who forged the Niger memos in the first place?

By Matthew Yglesias

As intriguing as the prospect of seeing Karl Rove sent to the pokey is, I must admit that on one level I don't really care who the guilty parties in the Plame leak case are. Whoever did the deed ought to be found out and punished, because that's what you do, but it will make little difference. My opinion that Rove is a scumbag won't be altered by his possible vindication, nor appreciably strengthened by his possible conviction. The basic case for scumbaggery, grounded in the public record, is simply far too strong to be altered one way or another by anything related to this matter. At the same time, I doubt that removing the wrongdoers from office will do any good. There are a lot of scumbags out there, and as recent coverage of the College Republicans' annual conference has made clear, the right churns them out assembly-line style. President Bush will have no trouble replacing anyone he may lose with someone just as bad.

One can't have a superior argument when talking with stupid people incapable of "original" thought.

Posted by: Anonymous Coward at July 21, 2005 8:22 PM

originalism:

the belief that the United States Constitution should be interpreted in the way the authors originally intended it

----------

But interpreting the way the authors intended is just that -- interpretation -- a viewpoint -- an opinion.

So just because a judge is labeled "Orignialist" really doesn't mean anything except that the judge is interpreting intent -- just like every other judge.

More Explosions in London: Psy-ops in Progress
Ask the question, who benefits?
Today is the last day of parliament before an 80 day break. So if the government wanted to get those anti-terror measures through which were proposed after the 7/7 bombing, then this status of high alert is the perfect climate to get them rammed through without dissent. Sky News reported that members of parliament could be recalled tonight in a special session for the express purpose of passing that legislation. And what does the legislation include? Designating anyone who writes articles or puts out a website that advocates or gives aid and comfort to the terrorists. So you have a situation whereby they could say that someone like myself writing articles accusing the government of involvement, has a negative impact on the public’s trust of the government in fighting the war on terror and therefore aids the terrorists. The definition is so loose that they could classify what we do on this website as aiding terrorists. When of course all we’re really doing is shining a spotlight on the real terrorists and attempting to save both lives and liberties. The government is setting up a database of undersirables to be watched under this legislation. Related: Clarke 'lowers bar' on terror crime via web, writing, preaching,etc... In the early confusion about what is actually happening in London, several things are already clear. - This immediately stalls questions about the first bombing. The mainstream media were finally beginning to highlight the fact that the government's official story did not fit together. This takes those issues off the front pages. - This further promulgates the fearmongering and creates a pliable public that is willing to accept draconian anti-terror laws. They are trying to turn us into Israel, with an alert or a bombing every fortnight. - On the very day that the Patriot Act is due to be renewed, Bush can use the alert level to grease the skids and bully Congress into re-authorizing the bill.

Three new studies, by very different authors taking very different tacks, reach much the same conclusion about modern terrorism: that its practitioners, especially its foot soldiers, are motivated not so much by Islamic fantasies of the caliphate's restoration and the snuffing of freedom, but rather by resistance to foreign occupation of Arab lands.
...
President George W. Bush frequently depicts the foreign Arabs in Iraq as comrades of the 9/11 hijackers, enemies of freedom who might be wreaking havoc here if they weren't fighting over there. Yet if the Arabs in Paz's and Obaid's studies are typical, Bush's portrait is off the mark. Their calls to arms may be drenched in Pan-Islamic rhetoric. Those doing the calling—Osama Bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi—may have more cataclysmic ambitions. But the young fanatics on the ground, those streaming across the Iraqi border, seem motivated more by the classic goals of national liberation movements.

The masturbation bit is funny, but of course the more tricky one is Invitro Fertilization. If you believe that life begins at the moment when the sperm is united with the egg then everyone of those zygots are actually teeny tiny babies. Nobody who is a pro-lifer should participate in this process that might accidently kill one of these teeny tiny frozen babies. And each should be protected and implanted so they can grow to life, not just a few and they must never destroy them.

NEVER touch the private parts of your body except when going to the toilet or when washing them! Your genitals are dirty, nasty, evil, filthy parts of your body.

Avoid being alone as much as possible. Find good company and stay in this good company. If the good company seems hesitant to have you along with them, be persistent. Just hang around with them no matter what. They will get use to you sooner or later.

If you are associated with other persons having this same problem, YOU MUST BREAK OFF THEIR FRIENDSHIP. Never associate with other people having the same weakness. Don't suppose that two of you will quit together, you never will.

I'm talking about the arguments. I'm talking about the determination - in some circles, like this show - never to regard *any* abortion as anything else than a "woman's freedom" - which is of course a "pro" with no "con" side. Everything I've ever heard S/J say about abortion suggests that they view concerns about late term abortions as just as ridiculous as concerns about masturbatory effluvia.

Possibly if the corporate boards of directors decide that its not profitable to control the natural resources of a country then we will pull out our military like in Iraq as they keep up the attacks because they don't want foreign corporations like those from here and Britain controling their country and hiring foreign employee while they have 70 percent unemployement and don't have electricity and clean water and are not even up the standards they had under Saddam Hussein.

Corporations don't need more rights or control what countries our country goes to war with. I guess we did go to war with North Korean who actually had WMDs because they had no natural resources to offer the major corporations of this country.

How can everyone be so cruel? But, it's really about privacy, most people don't want other people seeing them drop their Ass-Babies in the toilet right after they've pinched one off, it's a person's own personal choice whether they want to show off their Ass-Babies to the world or flush them down the camode. Oh man, that was a terrible comparison of a very serious issue, and it really doesn't prove the point for either side, that's why it's ridiculous comedy gone wild, Haha!!!

Posted by: spocko at July 21, 2005 8:45 PM

Not one minute before birth. Your rhetoric discounts whatever argument you were trying to pull off.

Posted by: Cathy in Seattle, Nobel Prize Nominated Blogger at July 21, 2005 08:40 PM

There's not "rhetoric" in what I'm saying. I'm pretty much open to any honest argument. What I'm objecting to is the heavy *rhetoric* which I sometimes hear on this show. You yourself are making it quite clear. You say that abortion is legal generally "up to 12 weeks". Why? Why should it be so? Are you saying that after 12 weeks a woman no longer should have any freedom over her own body? Are you saying that up to 12 weeks abortion is *absoutely* a matter of a woman's control over her own body and magically after 12 weeks it becomes more complicated? Have you ever heard Janeane or Sam say the understand or agree with that 12 week barrier? You won't. You'll only hear this magic rhetorical phrase "a woman's control over her own body" repeated over and over, as if to drown out details such as the "12 weeks" which you brought out.

Any example taken to an extreme, such as yours, reaches a level of absurdity that renders it logically useless. It leads to vacuous conclusions.

Q: Are you for the war?
Q: Are you for the death penalty?
Q: Do you believe any woman who has ever had an abortion is as guilty of murder as one who murders her 5 y/o child? Are these equivalent in your mind?

It is about religion here or the lack of it..

They feel they are fighting a war to prevent the spread of OUR values..

This is the real danger of your using this war for politics..

In ignoring the real conflict you can never bring about and end to the conflict..

Even Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is calling for a crack down on Radical Islam..

Jihad is no secret..

Posted by: War Dog at July 21, 2005 08:38 PM

That's so entirely backasswards...Islam is one religion where it is actually forbidden to try and change someones religion...

Christians amongst many other religions have lived in Iraq for centuries peacefully.

Pakistan?...You can't find a dirtier more corrupt country...

Do you know what "jihad" means?

It means "the struggle" and is most often referenced as "the struggle" towards enlightenment and spirituality...

As used in the western media it's a bastardization and twisting for propaganda purposes...

This war is illegal...This war is immoral...This war is insane...There is the true danger.

Janeane recorded that Nation spot after the article, which wasn't very nice to her or AAR as a whole....

The word " Privacy" is not in the Constitution because in the late 18th century, to ask for privacy meant to ask people to leave because it meant you needed to use the privy. Privacy meant a toilet function. Also is seen as in your " private" parts.
The modern use of "privacy" didn't come into the language until the mid 19th century when Thomas Crapper invented the modern toilet.

Reversing Roe is now a regulatory issue that the courts will work to make it improbable for most women to have an abortion but not impossible. State's rights will control the ability.

Actually, the reports are the same, but the title is written slightly differently for each site.

NUKING MECCA

Why Congressman Tom Tancredo's latest idea is both strategically and morally bankrupt.

Excerpt:

In the end, Mr. Tancredo's statement is an extreme example of the strategic and moral bankruptcy of this current administration and its congressional allies, a bankruptcy that has ensured that our democracy promotion efforts are looked upon suspiciously by Muslims while contributing to an enormous spike in global terrorism, making our country less safe.

Response to check out esp. if you are looking for an analysis to counter those that espouse this extreme idea.

Joe. You are doing what J likes to do which is throw in the kitchen sink instead of focusing on the one issue. I didn't say that I have any problem with the anti-war approaches of this show. I agree with them. I'm not for war or death penalty. Obviously abortion is not equivalent to murder. You are making a simple mistake: you are equating opposition to one kind of extremism with embrace of a different kind of extremism.

I'm just saying - the extremism regarding abortion which ones hears - when it comes up which is not as often as at a previous time - on this show is distasteful to thinking feeling people.

The idea of bombing Mosques and Islamic holy sites to stop them from attacking us is the same rationale the Ku Klux Klan used when their members bombed and burnt black churches. You think that kept black people quiet and in their place without attempting to retaliate?

Any of these statements is at least consistent:

1) kill all humans - they suck
2) because of overpopulation I favor any and all abortions
3) birth is a magickal process; a woman is a deity who should have the power of life and death over the life within her

but what doesn't make any sense is the maddeningly inance stance:

a) abortion is merely and simply a freedom that a woman has over her own body. there is no other consideration nothing to see here i'm not listening la la la la la la la
