"Noam and I first met in the summer of 1965, on a plane ride to Mississippi with a delegation to protest the jailing of civil rights workers there. The antiwar movement brought us closer together, and Noam and his wife Carol, Roz, and I became friends. Of all the movement people I knew, there was no one person who combined such extraordinary intellectual power with such commitment to social justice.
In the midst of that Brandeis meeting in 1975 there was an interruption. A student came running down the aisle, waving a piece of paper. He was with the campus newspaper and they had just received the news: Saigon had surrendered, the war was over. Everyone in the auditorium stood and cheered. We shook hands. We embraced. I felt great joy, but perhaps more than anything a sense of relief that the killing had stopped.
There was also an exhilarating feeling of pride, even awe, for, as the great anarchist-journalist I.F. Stone said, it was human beings against technological power, and human beings had won. It was an exciting thought that apparently powerless people, both in our country and in Vietnam, had confronted the awesome power of the United States government and brought a terrible war to an end."

July 29, 2005, Iran, Akbar Ganji Appeal
The International Committee in Support of Akbar Ganji, the Iranian investigative journalist jailed since April 2000 for his expose of security officials' roles in the murder of opposition journalists and for critical comments he made at a Berlin conference, had a full-page ad, printed in yesterday's New York Times, appealing to the United Nations Secretary General to work for his immediate release.
Ganji's health is in critical condition as he undergoes the second month of a hunger strike in protest against his unjust imprisonment.
The letter was signed by dozens of prominent intellectuals and human rights activists, including Ganji's attorney, Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ebadi, Noam Chomsky, and Howard Zinn.

She got ALL her points across and Fund tried the time-worn Bush talking points... with a look on his face like he knew they weren't working and was pissed that's all he had.

So what is the story on Jean Schmidt who is trying to "Swift Boat" the Iraqi (Bush's) war veteran who is running as a Democrat? Has she ever served in the military? With a name like Scmidt is there a history of supporting the American Bund movement in her family. Does she have any relatives in the "old country" that served as guards at Dachau?

It's stunning that Americans are willing to tolerate traitors in their midst! Anywhere else in the world they would be brought to justice. In America they seem to be revered by a large segment of the populace. When people talk about the "dumbing down" of the American public they understate the problem.

CHICAGO SUN TIMES JULY 29
Union chief rips Bean (D-IL 8th) for backing trade pact (CAFTA)
Union chief rips Bean for backing trade pact
July 29, 2005
BY SCOTT FORNEK Political Reporter
Freshman Democrat Melissa Bean will "pay a serious price" for voting for the Central American Free Trade Agreement in the U.S. House, a top labor leader said Thursday, predicting that unions will deny her crucial support in her effort to hold on to her northwest suburban congressional seat.
"Almost all the unions in this particular area supported her both with mobilization -- knocking on doors -- and with money, and up comes what is a true test in terms of a vote, and she can't stand with us?" said Gerald McEntee, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the largest union in the AFL-CIO.
"She'll certainly feel an effect in terms of contributions and resources," McEntee said. "She'll pay a serious price with the workers in her area."
(snip)
Illinois AFL-CIO President Margaret Blackshere said one local labor leader told her he was considering looking for a candidate to challenge Bean in the Democratic primary in the 8th Congressional District.
(snip)
Bean said she voted for CAFTA, even though it "is not perfect," because it will eliminate foreign taxes paid by Baxter Healthcare, Abbott Labs, Boeing, Motorola and other companies in or near her district, allowing them to broaden their markets and create jobs.

Women and people of color are always victims and have Stockholm syndrome because their obvious mental inferiority makes them natural flunkies. They could never muster the will, malice, or alienation to distance themselves from their humanity, because only white men are capable of that particular illness?
THAT the gist of it, Jane Ann?

WRITE TO MELISSA BEAN AND ALL OTHER DEMOCRATS WHO VOTED FOR CAFTA!
Here's mine:
Dear Congresswoman Bean,
Your CAFTA vote is extremely discouraging.
I hope I can continue to support you, but this tests my allegiance and puts into play the entire Democratic Party in Illinois and the nation.
Please abandon the DLC. They are the road to defeat in this pro-labor state. Think of the death squads in Central America and the Sugar industry which are the worst in the world. I'm flabbergasted and without hope. Global warming, energy crisis, Wal Mart and the destruction of the American Middle Class have all accelerated under NAFTA. Now this scourge expands.
Please vote with the party in the future, its a disgrace that our new representative abandoned us in a clutch situation. Be like Dick Durbin, he's the best. Don't be like Liebermann, he's the worst.

There's something that I came across today that really, really disturbs me, and makes me worry we may have another 9/11 type emergency soon.
In a recent issue of The American Conservative, intelligence analyst Philip Giraldi wrote:
"The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney's office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons. Within Iran there are more than 450 major strategic targets, including numerous suspected nuclear-weapons-program development sites. Many of the targets are hardened or are deep underground and could not be taken out by conventional weapons, hence the nuclear option. As in the case of Iraq, the response is not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States. Several senior Air Force officers involved in the planning are reportedly appalled at the implications of what they are doing – that Iran is being set up for an unprovoked nuclear attack – but no one is prepared to damage his career by posing any objections."
This is not on the web, but in print. This is very disturbing. It sounds like Cheney is counting on something like 9/11 happening again, so he can justify nuking Iran. I think the whistle needs to be blown on this. This might have some relationship to the recent spate of bombings too.
There's more about it here: http://www.antiwar.com/justin/?articleid=6734 and here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/7/25/133532/006 But that's about it, so far... well a few more blogs have picked it up, but we need a secondary confirmation. anyone have anymore links on this?

The KKK targeting Hispanics is nothing new, but I suspect it will only get more intense as the anti-immigration atmosphere created by the Right Wing gets worse.
Notice how the Grand Wizard tried to make the bizarre distinction blacks and hispanics. That is classic divide and conqueor tactics. Hispanics have been involved in the civil rights movement as well.
Funny how the Grand Wizard left out that blacks were fighting for their civil rights against the likes of the KKK.

It occurs to me that maybe another term or phrase would be better used for the term "Abortion" Abortion sounds so harsh. It's easy to attack something that sounds so final and drastic.
The Republicans do it all the time -- "Right to Life" -- sounds great. We all know that it is not really true.
So what would be another term for Abortion that would take some of the wind out of the attack on womans rights just because it sounded less deadly?
Something not medical term sounding but relating to a womans basic health needs. Something you could say around children.
Just a thought...

Doesn't matter what's likely. People on both the right AND the left see the timing of the Frist Split alongside Santorum's anti-Rove statement not 24 hours before it, as a beginning of the distancing necessary for Congressional Republicans to make it through the '06 mid-terms without losing both houses.
Can you really contend that Frist didn't understand how his statement would be taken?
He talked to the Administration before he came out with it. THEY knew what it meant! I guarantee it!

This week on NOW:
Abortion rights under attack in America.
The Kansas Attorney General Takes on Planned Parenthood
NOW reports in WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH KANSAS?
In a controversial reading of the state's statutory rape law, Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline has pushed to mandate reporting of any sexual activity of people under the age of 16 and subpoenaed medical records of abortion patients.
Kline maintains he just wants to enforce the law and protect children, but critics charge that he's attacking a woman's right to an abortion and putting more kids at risk.
NOW examines Kline's policies, which have made Kansas ground-zero for the reproductive rights debate in America.

RULE OF THUMB: A statement mades wishfully but based in ignorance and imagination isn't, strictly speaking, a lie - when done by an average person. When a media hack pretending to disseminate news does it, an unsupportable notion stated as fact is plainly a BIG FAT *LIE*!

You're gonna be able to tell who the Republican candidates for President are gonna be by how much they distance themselves from Bush.
They're out of the gate now.
No telling where its gonna go now!
Look for some REALLY strong distancing from McCain! You think he's gonna let Frist or Santorum out-distance him?
Wouldn't take much for ALL these boys to end up left of Hillary Clinton!
Messy as that sounds, I'm serious.
It could happen!

How the West Was Lost
CAFTA and the Disassembling of America
By NIRANJAN RAMAKRISHNAN
Like the morning-after pill, Democrats complained the next day about the House vote (took place at midnight, was kept open for forty-five minutes until a majority was....assembled), complaining how the rules were bent after the original tally actually rejected CAFTA by five votes. Why did they then not stage a sit-in or register a vociferous protest? One Democratic senator referred to this ploy, but when the vote came, I counted many Democrats -- Dianne Feinstein, both the Washington Senators, and the Old Reliable, Joe Lieberman himself, all voting for CAFTA.
Any other country would have made a huge stink about a re-enactment of such a fire-sale of its wealth. But not America of the New American Century. If Socrates died cheerfully sipping hemlock from a chalice, we will likely reach our end propped up on a couch, watching the latest 'breaking news' of a high-speed car chase or a disappeared bride, maybe even to the background music of 'Suicide is Painless'.

When you are dealing with nominal waking reality, you are operating at one level of the many that are native to your psyche.
When you are dreaming, from your viewpoint you are entering other levels of reality quite as native to your psyche, but usually you are still experiencing those events through your current waking station.
The dreams that you remember are colored or altered or even censored to a certain extent.
There is no inherent psychological or biological necessity for this.
Your ideas and beliefs, however, about the nature of reality, and sanity, have resulted in such a schism.

i am so sick of these people. they really do have such projection issues ... they are the first to make bigoted remarks, and then when someone makes a comment that cuts too close to home ... well holy hell! forget it! up in arms, they are. the problem is they can't tell the difference between a generalization made for illustration purposes and one made from pure hate and self-loathing ...
basically, their issues are showing (or as n would say ... "your slip is showing")

I was in my teens when I wrote this poem:
Go see your Uncle Phil
And say hello.
Who would walk a mile today
To say hello,
The city freezing in the snow
Phil had a news stand
Under the black El.
He sat on a wooden box
In the cold and in the heat.
And three small rooms across the street.
Today the wooden box was gone,
On top the stand Uncle Phil was curled,
A skeleton inside an Army coat.
He smiled and gave me a stick of gum
With stiffened fingers, red and numb.
Go see your Uncle Phil today
My mother said again in June
I walked the mile to say hello
With the city smelling almost sweet
Brand new sneakers on my feet.
The stand was nailed and boarded tight
And quiet in the sun.
Uncle Phil lay cold, asleep,
Under the black El, in a wooden box
In three small rooms across the street.
I recall that, certainly not as an example
of "poetry," but because it evokes something
about my growing up, in the slums of Brooklyn in
the 1930s, when my father and mother, in
desperate moments, turned to saviors: the corner grocer, who gave credit by writing down the day’s purchases on a roll of paper; the kind doctor who treated my rickets for years without charging; Uncle Phil, whose army service earned him a newsstand license, who loaned us money when we had trouble paying the rent.

If they succeed in outlawing a women's right to terminate her pregnancy and a women gets in an accident where her life hangs in the balance, will they have to call an emergency session of Congress to decide for the women and her family(like in Terri Shaivo's case) if she should be able to live at the expense of a clump of tissue? Mind you that a teratoma can have nails, hair, bone & muscle tissue just like a fetus, are women going to be allowed to have these growing clumps of human tissue removed or will that also be considered illegal?

The baby doll 'Porn Star' tees are even worse.
This is where we live; sexual imagery is packaged and sold even to pre-teens(e.g, Bratz). Thus, we have a culture of children who want to be young adults, and grow up as fast as possible in all the wrong ways. They have the cultural weight and spending power with little or no concept of the consequences, which, to be fair, is pretty much the definition of teenagers.

Nothing wrong with being fit. :)
On Charlize Theron...
She sort of worships her bulldyke mother, Gerda. Her mother blew her dad out of her socks over some drunken dispute. Charlize worships the ground she walks on.

Incidentally, I can't stand Sharon Stone. I think she's a lousy actress who managed to stretch out a virtually subliminal beaver shot into an entire career, and the fact that this is the Hollywood concept of a strong woman make me want to stab forty people at random.

The correct pronunciation of the word teat is "tit". Sorry kids, look it up.

My question is simply this: How can a person prove they are merely doing exactly as they please rather than suffering from what Janeane calls "Stockholm syndrome"? From what I here on this program, any behavior that Janeane doesn't like is a sign that someone has a problem.

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION INFORMATION:
More than 70 medical organizations support EC's purchase over-the-counter. It is estimated that emergency contraceptive pills have the potential to cut in half the 3 million unintended pregnancies in the United States each year and prevent as many as 800,000 abortions a year.
The scientific evidence is strong, clear and compelling: emergency contraception is safer than taking aspirin or anti-histamines; it meets all of the FDA's requirements for over-the-counter status; and is 95 percent effective in preventing pregnancy if taken in the first 24 hours after unprotected intercourse.
On Friday, July 15th, 2005 Senators Clinton (D-NY) and Murray (D-WA) lifted their hold on the nomination of Lester Crawford as permanent head of the FDA, after receiving assurance from Health and Human Services Secretary Leavitt that the FDA will make a decision on the over-the-counter (OTC) status of Plan B by September 1, 2005.

Meanwhile...
FDA ENDANGERS WOMEN'S HEALTH WITH SILICONE BREAST IMPLANT DECISION
July 29 - Today, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an approvable letter to Mentor Corporation, a manufacturer of silicone gel-filled breast implants, outlining specific conditions which Mentor must satisfy in order to receive FDA approval to widely market the dangerous implants - even though most experts acknowledge that the agency has no way to enforce the conditions.
"The testimony of women who suffered from silicone-gel leakage and migration to other organs, painful capsular contraction and disfigurement, and increased risk of death from suicide, brain cancer and lung cancer - all which have been documented by clinical research and recognized by FDA staff - apparently don't offset the lobbying campaign directed at political appointees like Commissioner Crawford by their corporate supporters."

The biggest turnoff about "feminism" is their lack of sense of fun about sex.
I just watched a scene from the new "Dukes Of Hazard" movie. Jessica Simpson kicked some serious behind. I don't think her "Daisy Dukes" are "empowering", but they look good? So what?

Sex between strangers can only be casual if they're both sociopaths.
