Hinchey, others demand answers on Downing Street Memo
By Dave Richardson - Times Herald-Record
»What if President Bush lied to Congress and the American people, used those lies to gain congressional approval for military action against Iraq and launched a war that killed 1,700 Americans and tens of thousands of others?
That might have been a hypothetical question a month ago; it might not be hypothetical anymore.
In fact, Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, says the answer to the question could lead to the impeachment of President Bush.«

Subject: Choking on Email
Michael,
Well, I read your article Michael and wow, that was a great adolescent whine. We aren't paranoid, most of us knew we were lied to, we are justified now with this memo (which are actually minutes.
You really should check with the London Times before you submit such a ridiculous editorial, they posted new memos the same morning of your editorial.
While you were whining about getting "200 emails from strangers" about the lack of coverage of Downing Street Memo I, 6 more documents have been released, including Downing Street Memo II, which is MUCH more incriminating than the first one.
In case you haven't been there, all new documents are on rawstory.com and on the following:
Ministers were told of need for Gulf war excuse http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1650822,00.html
Cabinet Office paper: Conditions for military action

Have US media been too cautious reporting Iraq? http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,564-1649071,00.html
Just in case you are unaware of the news, the ministers were told of a need for them to create an excuse for war. Hello? This is KILLING people!
Back to your "whine". Just to let you know.... C is the head of MI6 - Sir Richard Dearlove, which you would have known if you did a little bit of research. That's what the Brits call that office. We knew that, why didn't you?
You said: "But even on its face, the memo is not proof that Bush had decided on war. It states that war is now seen as inevitable by Washington. That is, people other than Bush had concluded, based on observation, that he was determ

What do you think would be effective?

Researchers may be very careful about "impugning the motivations" of even the most obvious scumbags.
However, those of us with more leeway -- commentators, bloggers, coworkers -- we should feel free to use a different standard of evidence.
If it seems really sensible to us to explain things in terms of bad motives, fine.
Researchers and journalists want to use the standards of criminal court -- i.e., you only suggest ulterior motive if you have proof beyond any reasonable doubt.
We ordinary people are free to obey the standards of the court of common sense.
In politics, in a sane world, the weight of evidence would be on officials to prove that they had *good* motives, rather than it being our responsibility to ask the obvious.

I have two requests.
I would like if if Majority Report could book Jon Lee Anderson for a guest.
I just read about "The Night Letter" at The Common Ills.
I knew nothing about it. Am I the only one in the dark here?
Could you ask Bill Scher about "The Night Letter" and could you please bring Jon Lee Anderson to discuss it?

The MZM web-site insinuates without actualy stating, that they are involved in the tying together of the Govt. agencies. They cite the Patriot Act, which leads me to believe that they are somehow involved with the co-ordinating of the systems to link the agencies under the Department Of Homeland Security.

Sam reminded me of Larry King's interview of Mark David Chapman several years ago.
Chapman claimed he "found god," and converted a lot of his fellow inmates. Later, King asked Chapman's lawyer, "Do you like him personally?" in such a tone that I felt as if King liked him. His lawyer said, "Oh, certainly. He is a very likeable guy."
I thought, "Uh... He killed John Lennon."
"Very cuddly and loveable dude."
"He killed John Lennon."
"He is a good, decent christian man. What a commendable guy!"
"He. Killed. John. Lennon. He. Is. Insane."
"Yeah... He is such a god-fearing man...decent, decent man."

Rest of my post, part 2
Usual freelance chatterboxes? Um, the memo said: " “The NSC had no patience with the UN route.” in the very same paragraph. Are you calling Condoleeza Rice a "Chatterbox"?
And you obviously didn't read the second page of the memo.
“The Foreign Secretary [Jack Straw] said he would discuss this with Colin Powell this week. It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided.”
Now you say that "everyone knew" we were intending to go to war with Iraq (well some of us "paranoid extremists" (how dare you!) did know he was planning on it actually, like Amy Goodman) but Bush said "I've not made up our mind on military action." Grammatical mistakes aside, (because he never speaks right), he said this over and over as he was PLANNING the war with BLAIR and this was two weeks before we decided to go to war, and at that very time we were BOMBING Iraq, illegally, to try and goad Saddam into war, and had been for 1 and a 1/2 months before then!
Point of fact, Bush and Blair discussed going to war with Iraq 9 days after 9/11. Where was the LATimes coverage on THAT?
In fact, Bush dreamed about invading Iraq before he was even president. If you check rawstory.com you will see the time line and what happened WHEN. He said he wanted to invade Iraq in 1999.

Rats, part three:
Benito Mussolini said that Fascism "should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power.
Who holds the purse strings of the LA Times?
Goebells said:
"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State."
Do you really want to help in the facilitation of Fascism??? Because you ARE. Look into your soul, Mr. Kinsley, and stop lying. Or at least stop buying the lies. Our Democracy depends on the integrity of journalism, it's our first amendment, and I expect the truth from our media, and shouldn't expect anything less.. (and yes I wrote to Time as well.)

Elaine, thanks for the link.
So "The Night Letter" was circulated in Afghanistan and it called Karzai a toady of the U.S. and called for people to rise up?
That explains the riots.
I agree that the distraction of blaming Newsweek was also an effort to keep the news about the reality of Afghanistan clamped down on.
I hope they discuss this. I don't know John Lee Anderson but The New Yorker has been one of the few mainstream news sources breaking news what with Sy Hersh and Jane Mayer. I'd like them to have him on the show to discuss "The Night Letter."

what HE says... his reasoning. TO which Janeane couldn't give cogent counter argument...and just blathering all over and then he laugh.
Posted by: wanda at June 13, 2005 09:27 PM
Her point was that the assumption about Perle's personality or ideological/policy stance was wrong because it was not based on the evidence we all have of Perle's character: the deceitful briefings, false reports, secretive meetings, and myopic policy building and fact-finding, ETC. It isn't that hard to find that information, people have been exposing it for years, now. His point was that calling Perle (or anyone) a liar or whatever makes the author looked biased and he won't be considered 'fair' enough in his criticisms. That the fucking problem with the media now generally--criticism is "bias" or treason! It's a slippery slope to be on, and Janeane was arguing, as she often has, that cowering to that does no one any good. Furthermore, that there was plenty of reason to say, "hey, this guy is power-hungry and demented and will stop at nothing to get his way." HE offered no alternative to THAT.

wanda I seriously don't understand what's your problem with Janeane. This is what we need. PASSION!
Posted by: HoneyBearKelly at June 13, 2005 09:12 PM
==================
Wrong! "Passion" is precisely what we do NOT need.
What we need is clear, calm, logical thinking. The truth, not "passion," will set us free.
Evidence against the Bush administration is overwhelming. We must keep fronting the evidence - over and over again - and the evidence will speak.
Trial lawyers have an old saying: "If the facts are with you, pound the facts. If the facts are against you, pound the table."
The facts are with us on this one. So why does Janeane so often insist on pounding the table?
Some of us don't give a shit about your feelings, Janeane, because this is not about you. It's about the dead kids in Iraq, the U.S. troops who are being betrayed, and the millions of Americans who lack medical insurance.
Not about some self-involved actress who lucked into a radio show.
We will win with facts and persuasion. Not with this sort of childish, hyper-emotional, ego-driven melodrama.
Remember...Hitler got elected chancellor of Germany by appealing not to people's intellects, but to their emotions.

Closing down Gitmo would be a satisfying symbolic act followed by some other way of caging and torturing people whose only crime (for the most part, maybe a few exceptions) was being Muslim in the wrong place, at the wrong time. More special renditions and such. The problem goes so much deeper than 1 concentration camp or gulag.

Close Gitmo now.
Bring the troops home and let the Iraqis and Afghanis own and operate their own businesses.
Bring the jobs home instead of outsourcing.
Fix Medicare so that the government can negotiate with the drug companies.
Universal healthcare like they have in other countries which would help people and businesses financially spread the cost out.
Leave Social Security alone or raise the cap if necessary.
Higher paying jobs so people can afford to live and buy more, increase flow of money, profits and more money going into Social Security that has worked well since it's inception in the 30's and a healthcare plan that will work just as well by the same principles.
Public Impeachment trials for everybody from the Bush administration
Public trials for the so-called terrorist so that people will hear the truth.

Washington, D.C.- Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee issued the following statement in response to the recent attacks in the media of Governor Howard Dean, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee:
“Chairman Howard Dean deserves our undivided support from the Democratic Party. Now is a time for us to be united in our efforts and speak directly to the people. Governor Dean speaks to the hearts and minds of the American people, and he is unafraid to squarely address issues such as the need for guaranteed voting rights in America, rising to the challenge to protect Social Security, and working together to solve the health care crisis.
“Chairman Howard Dean has worked hard for the last six months to reach out to each part of the country and to share the new pathway for Democrats, both at the national, state and local level. He has let the American people know that among Democrats, ALL Americans can find a home. Such statements reflect the core values of our party and must be unanimously embraced.
“The position of Chairman of the party by nature requires leadership that understands the core democrat values and how they will benefit this nation. I believe that Chairman Howard Dean emulates such values, and should continue to work diligently to spread our message.
Chairman Howard Dean has a heart, and I will take that heart any day over weak words alone. Thank you, Chairman Dean, for all of the work you do.”

From: High-Decibel Dean Silent On Iraq
The surprising thing is not that big-money Democrats have been holding back but that the DNC's small-donor direct mail and online money has been coming in more slowly than expected. Former DNC Chair Terry McAuliffe predicted that the committee was on a track to raise $100 million this year; estimates now are that they will raise only half that. In his defense, Dean counters that raising a million dollars a week ain't bad.
Dean's folks say it takes time to build a program and that their pitch that money is needed to build 50 state parties is turning on the spigot. Last week, one of Dean's more effective fundraising gimmicks during the presidential campaign started to work again. The gaffe attacks raised him $100,000 online, just like the attacks from his opponents did during the primaries.

GRAND TERRACE, Calif.-California liberal progressive activists are announcing that an initiative drive to put the California Honest Voting Act of 2005 Initiative on the Ballot has commenced. The Official “Title and Summary” has been issued by California Attorney General Bill Lockyer’s Office on June 7, 2005. The Deadline to obtain over 600,000 signatures is November 3, 2005. The initiative, if enough signatures are obtained, will be on the JUNE 2006 Ballot at the earliest.
Hank Ramey, whose prior foray in any initiative was a failed Initiative in 1990 in Bell Gardens, regarding an Amendment to the General Plan is planning with a message board and others into circulating the Honest Voting Act for more likely the June 2006 Ballot.
“We don’t think that we would get on this November’s Ballot”, Ramey said, “even if any of Arnold’s ((Schwarzenegger) Initiatives did qualify for the November Ballot. We are OPPOSED to all of Arnold’s Initiatives, because he favors hospitals, businesses, and far-right educational activists. We believe at Grassroots-CA-OH-FL (standing for Grassroots-California-Ohio-Florida) that the Democrats and Greens should recall Arnold, and send a message to the minority Republican Party that we want progressive changes in California Government, and we will not have a Governor who curries with the REAL special interests. Hell, we didn’t like Gov. Gray Davis for being the Dialing for Dollars Governor!”
The Title and Summary reads:
“ELECTIONS. ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES. INITIATIVE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. Prohibits electronic voting in a

There are short sighted people who are interested in making as much money off of whoever and whatever oportunities they come across. These are called Opportunists who will say anything and do anything for a buck what Janeane was refering to. They don't care about democracy otherwise they would not have screwed this up so bad that it costs us so much money and Bush gives his friend several huge tax cuts and government contracts, cuts back on educational and social programs for poor, widowed and seniors.

Representative Walter "Freedom Fries" Jones has sponsored a bill in the House requiring the Bush admin to produce a timetable for Iraq withdrawl. Howard Dean, OTOH, is pushing to stay in Iraq.
I never thought I'd ever be comparing an anti-war rethuglican and a pro-war dem. What a crazy world.

You say you wanna start something new
And it's breakin' my heart you're leavin'
Baby, I'm grievin'
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you have a lot of nice things to wear
But then a lot of nice things turn bad out there
{Refrain}
Ooh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
It's hard to get by just upon a smile
Ooh, baby, baby, it's a wild world
I'll always remember you like a child, girl
You know I've seen a lot of what the world can do
And it's breakin' my heart in two
Because I never wanna see you a sad girl
Don't be a bad girl
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware
Beware
{Refrain}
La-la-la la la...
Baby, I love you
But if you wanna leave, take good care
I hope you make a lot of nice friends out there
But just remember there's a lot of bad and beware
Beware
{Refrain twice}

No, Smithee, I really had to think hard about that little check--I'm really against the war too. I thought I'd made that clear at some point. But I'm against Democratic corporatists harassing Howard Dean too. If you ignore the neocons or try to get along with them, they walk all over you. You gotta hit them, at least with strong words. All that being said, Howard Dean is the latest smokescreen for what's really being done to us and the people of the world. Also, attacking the messenger, as you may know, is a common logical fallacy known as 'ad hominem'. It proves nothing.

A common disconnect I've found in democrats is that they say they're against this illegal oil war, yet support a pro-war party and vote for pro-war candidates. I dunno. It's just weird.
As far as Dean and corporations go, well, check out his record as Vermont Governor.

I never watch TV news anymore, but was at the laundromat--CBS featured Jackson, but second up was that 60% of Americans are against the war in Iraq now, and it was a major story; then they actually mentioned Gitmo in some detail. I think this is a good sign.

It was raining. That hot, grimy kind of rain that doesn't clean anything, just leaves a rotten, briny smell behind, like riverbank corpses. I sat in my office reading the racing form. Business was slow as an untipped bartender. There was a knock on the door. On the other side of that frosted glass, a classy looking blur, jet-black hair, about five-two, three, wearing something red as my thoughts. I took a last drag on the smoke from between my lips and dumped it in the cheap coffee from across the street.
"Come in."
The door swung open, and the brunette sashayed across my office as if she knew what I was thinking and didn't give a damn. Without saying a word, she dropped a file on my desk, fat as a crooked mayor, and with as many convictions on it, I'd bet. She leaned in, close enough that I got a faceful of expensive perfume, and whispered.......
Peaches!

FORTY YEARS IN THE SAND: WHAT HAPPENED THE LAST TIME FREEDOM MARCHED ON IRAQ
Just because the interview focused on the intent of the ideologues/idealists/imperialists/neo-conservatives/delusional rapture-believing wingnuts (whichever label you prefer) regarding the invasion of Iraq should not dissuade you from checking out this article.
What is surprising is that the British did not learn the lessons from their own history. Perhaps-- this is the reason why the revelations about the "scheme" to invade Iraq keep coming from the British government. At least, they were considering the consequences and the aftermath of the invasion--the occupation of Iraq.
Good article which describes the parallels of the two invasions of Iraq. The Iraqis have responded to both invasions and occupations in the same manner--by fighting against the outsiders. The parallels in history are haunting.

The planes flew into the buildings, but there is compelling evidence that the multiple steel supports at the middle of the buildings could not possibly have melted in the resulting fire. The 9/11 Commission then lied, and said they were single steel beams. They were not! Such a structure has never caved in from that kind of crash and resulting fire before or since. Then building 7 went later in the day--no plane crash. Read David Ray Griffin before you get so cocky about tinfoil hats. And remember, if 2 people are involved in an action--that's a conspiracy!

Building 7 was destroyed by controlled demolition. I've heard the audio where they explained that they had to "pull" it because of the damage it had suffered and the danger it posed to nearby buildings.
That means that demolition explosives were already present in the building since there would have been no opportunity to set them up during the emergency. Were they also present in the two towers? Do other NYC building have demolition charges built into them?
