hour one - monday

Steve Clemons of The Washington Note, on today's cloture vote on John Bolton.

------------------
What Sam & Janeane have been talking about this hour:

The Academic Bill of Rights, a David Horowitz-sponsored vehicle for pushing right-wing ideas into classrooms.

The 2001 report from Lynne Cheney's organization that singled out 117 incidents of "anti-Americanism" on college campuses.

The Bush Justice Department bail-out of big tobacco.

Porter Goss's strange comments about pursuing terrorists in "sovereign nations."

The latest leaks from Britain on pre-war lies.

Overview of OPERATION YELLOW ELEPHANT

One of the General's readers pointed out that there isn't a good, one stop place to learn everything you need to know about OPERATION YELLOW ELEPHANT. Hopefully, this post will serve that purpose. Check back often for updates.

The objective of OPERATION YELLOW ELEPHANT is to recruit College Republicans and Young Republicans to serve as infantry. They demanded this war and now viciously support it. It's only right that they also experience it.

The 56th College Republican National Convention is the setting for many of the proposed ops. It begins on Friday, June 24.

The General encourages his readers to take the initiative to create materials and to plan and conduct special operations. Please let him know what you've done and he'll try to post it.

THE WELL

THE JUDGMENT

THE WELL. The town may be changed,

But the well cannot be changed.

It neither decreases nor increases.

They come and go and draw from the well.

If one gets down almost to the water

And the rope does not go all the way,

Or the jug breaks, it brings misfortune.

THE IMAGE

Water over wood: the image of THE WELL.

Thus the superior man encourages the people at their work,

And exhorts them to help one another.

Well, Axel's pretty passive, and the recruiter's wouldn't accept his "No." They kept calling him. He just wanted out of it, but whenever he'd say no, they'd get agressive. All of us have been dragged into things we didn't want to be dragged into because we weren't listened to when we wanted out.

It's hard enough that my nephew lost his dad when he was a little guy, but when they told him he was just a burden on his mother now, he'd feel guilty and that was the hook they needed to keep dragging him back in.

BTW, don't believe what the Marine Sites say about the incident. I was there, I know what happened.

Lynn Cheney Hates America

Lynne Cheney, Telling the Truth, 1995:

"I am struck by the high level of arrogance that often exists among those who maintain that there is no truth except what they would have us believe. They redefine our words and our lives for us, and expect us to go along. They rewrite the past and are shocked when we object. And this arrogance is often combined with an amazing lack of thought to the consequences of what they are preaching.

… Nor should we overlook the moral consequences of insisting that reality is nothing more than what we create. If history is only an invention, then we never have to admit to even the most grievous error; we can simply revise it out of existence. …

The idea of responsibility – of being accountable for one's actions – has no meaning in a world where there is neither truth nor reality, but only endless interpretation."

Academic Freedom or Political Indoctrination?

Liberal professors dominate college life and indoctrinate students with leftist ideology. So goes the argument for an "Academic Bill of Rights" to guarantee a diversity of ideas in the classroom. At least 16 states are considering legislation being pushed by conservative activist David Horowitz, who has raised big money for President Bush, and opposed by the Association of University Professors. Would the so-called "Bill of Rights" promote academic freedom or undermine it by creating an atmosphere of censorship and intimidation? We hear from Horowitz himself as well as from academics, legislators and students at two campuses with different viewpoints.

Listen, if you want your head to explode while listening to douchebag David Horowitz.

AMY GOODMAN: Reg Keyes, can talk about what happened to your son, Lance Corporal Tom Keyes, what he understood about why he was going to Iraq, and what you understood at the time?

REGINALD KEYES: Well, in Britain, we believed our Prime Minister. Our Prime Minister was telling us that Saddam Hussein could threaten our country and our country's interests within 45 minutes, that this WMD program was ready to be deployed against us. So, I had misgivings about this because the weapons inspectors were pleading for more time. They were not being given that time. There was a rush, there was a haste to war, and I couldn’t understand why all avenues of diplomacy had not been explored before the rush to war. So my son marched off down that platform, boarded a train, his head held high, proud to do his duty for his country, flushed with patriotism, but sadly he died deceived, deceived by his own Prime Minister.

He believed his Prime Minister, and I did also, and that’s why I'm here today. I'm a very angry father. My son, he died for a lie. And Tom had only been over in Iraq for a few months before he was saying -- he was telephoning home and saying, “Dad, I don't know what we're doing here. These are very poor people. They're already on their knees economically. They’ve got no fight in them. They can only produce homemade devices. There's no weapons of mass destruction here.”

Morale was at an all time low. And my son was one of 75 military policemen in Iraq, British military policemen. Sadly, he should have been home before he was killed, but they kept him on and sent 50 back. And my son was then what they call in army terms “de-scaled.” His equipment was removed, his morphine, his grenades, his distress flares. His rounds of ammunition were removed, his satellite phone was removed. All they gave my son back and his five colleagues was 50 rounds of ammunition. They then deployed them 23 kilometers away, where the radio range they had at the time was only 15 kilometers, to a notoriously hostile police station where they came under attack by a mob of 500 armed Iraqis. And sadly, after running out of ammunition, they were overwhelmed and ritualistically slaughtered, and they suffered horrific dea

A new report claims that America's commitment to peace and security is
belied by its status as one of the world's leading arms dealers.
"U.S. Weapons at War," a study released this month by the New York
City-based World Policy Institute, an affiliate of the New School
University, finds that American weapons were sold to 18 nations currently
involved in "active conflicts" from U.S.-backed operations against
Islamists in the Philippines and narco-militarists in Colombia, to regional
power struggles in Angola, Nepal, Algeria, Indonesia, India and Pakistan.

This comes in the same breath as a report from the Stockholm International
Peace Research Institute, which finds that in 2004 the nations of the world
gave $1.035 trillion to the global arms industry up 25 percent from 2003.

The "primary driver" was the U.S., according to the BBC, which spent $235
billion on the war on terror from 2002-2004.

The United States is also one of the leading sellers of weapons. Some of its
customers including Egypt and Saudi Arabia ? have been deemed undemocratic
and abusive by the U.S. Department of State.

The White House opposed on human rights grounds the European Union's plan to
lift its arms-embargo against China, but according to the New York Times
remains in a military alliance with the repressive regime in Uzbekistan.

The BBC reports that the Bush administration has confirmed "making an
exception to its own embargo" on weapons sales to Haiti, and now hopes to
have the ban lifted entirely, to help police there put down political
violence prior to elections in September.

According to the Associated Press, Pakistan has been approved to purchase
Boeing Harpoon anti-ship missiles. It also bought Huey helicopters and F-16
fighter jets.

This complements increased weapons sales to its nemesis, India.

Sempra Energy, a California-based energy company, wants to build a massive 1,450 megawatt coal-fired power plant in Nevada to make millions selling dirty power to Californians. Generating this much dirty coal power will poison the air and water in the region and delay or even prevent the development of clean, renewable energy resources in the West. The coal plant, proposed in an area west of Gerlach, Nevada at the base of the beautiful Granite Range, is surrounded by wilderness conservation and study areas. This plant would permanently mar this pristine desert environment and spew over 50,000 pounds of dangerous pollutants into the air every day, including unsafe amounts of dioxins and lethal mercury.

Please make your voice heard on this project by using the link below to send a message to the Project Manager of the Bureau of Land Management. The comment period ends Tuesday, June 21, so please act soon!

http://www.sierraclub.org/action/?alid=395&st=tact&rf=a00395a

This kind of energy development takes us backward by increasing our dependence on polluting and dangerous sources of energy. Instead of putting America on the path to a clean and affordable energy future, this power plant locks us into a destructive path. Allowing 19th century technology to provide energy into the future makes no sense when there are clean safe alternatives.

Remember, the deadline for comments is June 21 so please send a fax to the BLM right away.

Thank you for helping us protect the environment for future generations.

Posted by: Cathy in Seattle, Nobel Prize Nominated Blogger at June 20, 2005 07:46 PM

I think he was for real. So many Republicans are fed up with their party over the Terri Schiavo thing and the nuclear option. They don't identify with Frist, DeLay or their ilk. They are more John McCain Republicans, totally astonished with what is going on with their party AND they are embarrassed that Bush is the president. I know it is pathetic, but I am surrounded by Republicans - they are FINALLY listening to what I have to say.
