There is a new "The Office" (or dare I say "Larry Sanders") style series in the UK, but it is about the life and times of a spin doctor.

The title is "The Thick Of It".

Synopsis:

Not the first comedy to be set in Whitehall but, after a lengthy election campaign and a third term for New Labour, a political satire may be just what the general public want.

The new TV comedy from writer Armando Iannucci takes a satirical look at the inner workings of the corridors of power. It follows the career of a minister, his political advisors and their hapless relations with the media.

Iannucci, a comic writer, performer, director and producer, also has his own topical show, Armando Iannucci's Charm Offensive on Radio 4.

And I remember Nixon being schmoozed by the likes of Elvis and Sammy Davis, Jr. while the media kept trying to bury Watergate in the back pages. Rememeber, after Watergate broke, Nixon was still reelected by the single largest majority in hitory, as I recall.

All it takes is one credible story to break through, like Woodward and Bernstein. All I'm saying is that we shouldn't give up hope just yet. Big things have been breaking recently, like the British memo -- Reppublicans are looking more worried than I've seen them since '72, despite their bluster.

A put option guarrantees a price should the price fall over a specific time period. The seller of the put is obligated to buy if the holder desires to sell before the option expires. Tell me who would do a better job. You know as well as everyone else that everything Clinton did while in office was fought against tooth and nail by the republicans. As long as the Republicans have control of any branch of government they will fight any decision a Dem makes.

Dresden was a dress rehersal for the predicted firestorm that was supposed to be the result of an atomic bomb. It was untouched for a reason. No one was quite sure if a firestorm was possible. Dresden proved that with the right mix of fuel and incendiary bombs it's possible.

The Nazis didn't need revenge to bomb capitals. During their May 1940 blitzkrieg of the low countries, they bombed the center out of Rotterdam. During the the attack on Poland, they did the same with Warsaw, except they started bombing at the edges and worked inward - killing many more people.

However, they did call their later flying bombs V (for Vergeltung or Reprisal) - the V1 and V2.

They also called resistance fighters "terrorists".

Now the key word here is AUTHORITY.

Reading about sadists' response to authority made me remember that the relation to authority is a key response for guaging arrested development. So I apply my insight to the likes of George JUNIOR who was riding his shiny bike at the same time our true statesmen were fleeing the Capitol under poor security protocol.

George JUNIOR has had a long problem with authority, most visible in his relation to his father, but also seen in his ultimate lack of success in the National Guard. Breaking rules, defying authority, provoking authority, failing in what is expected, all with the possible added attitude that rules don't apply to him and being uncaring that harm to other people may result.

One category of this anti-authority behavior includes "oppositional behavior" which we see in George Junior's actions all the time most obvious have been his temper tantrums, which his handlers are always working hard to avoid by keeping him insulated. Doing the opposite of what is expected is a Bush trademark when one realizes that the only authorities that exist over George Junior the Usurper of the U.S. Presidency are the Constitution and the People Of the United States. All Bush's actions are motivated to undo these authorities over him!

I don't know about you but I have a job which I make a very good living and I own my house which I will pay off the 10 year mortgage in 3 more years. Living in the SF bay area there is something to be said about that.

I wouldn't be so quick to pass onna mine job. We got trona (soda ash) mines here in Western Wyoming gots more roads 2000 feet down than than there is in Los Angeles. Climate down there is like 74 deg F year round. Nice place to work. Pays good too.

Lot of modern underground work that's safe and the guys that do it... love it.

And underground mining, in the vast majority of cases, has zero... zip... nada... negative effect on the environment.

SEOUL - North Korea on Saturday proposed the resumption of inter-Korean dialogue, which has been suspended for nearly a year, calling for a working-level contact early next week in the North Korean border town of Kaesong, Pyongyang said.

Group: Internet Explorer share slips below 90 percent

NEW YORK (AP) -- Microsoft Corp.'s share of the U.S. browser market has slipped below 90 percent as the Firefox browser continues to grow in popularity, according to independent tracking by WebSideStory.

Firefox, an open-source browser collectively developed by the Internet community under the Mozilla Foundation, had a 6.8 percent share as of April 29, an increase from 3.0 percent since WebSideStory began tracking Firefox separately in October.

Other browsers based on the Mozilla code, including America Online Inc.'s Netscape, had a 2.2 percent share, while Microsoft's Internet Explorer share was 89 percent, a drop from 95 percent in June.

The figures are for all operating systems combined. On computers running Microsoft's Windows, Internet Explorer has a 91 percent share, down from 97 percent in June.

Outside the United States, Germany is among the leading adopters of Firefox, with a 23 percent share, compared with 69 percent for Internet Explorer.

"They just seem to be averse to Microsoft products and really interested relatively in these open-source products," said Geoff Johnston, a WebSideStory analyst.

Microsoft is strong in Asia, with Internet Explorer commanding a share of 94 percent in Japan and 98 percent in China..

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With a rising number of Minnesotans unhappy about the nation's direction, President Bush's job-approval rating in the state hit an all-time low of 42 percent last week, according to the latest Star Tribune Minnesota Poll.

It's the lowest job-approval rating for a president in the Minnesota Poll in more than 12 years.

The poll found Minnesotans in a sour mood about the direction of the country:

Fifty-five percent said the country has gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track, a 6 percentage point increase in four months.

Overall, the president's job-approval rating in Minnesota has declined by 9 points since January, the last time it was measured by the poll.

Bush's approval rating fell virtually across the board, but it declined most sharply -- by double digits -- among men, young adults and those with a high school education or less.

"He's just done a terrible job of managing the stuff that's on his plate," said Keith Privette, 31, a Democrat and a business analyst from Watertown. "He's got one idea and that's what he sticks with, and he doesn't listen to any reason or any common sense from anybody else."

The poll of 832 adults, conducted from April 30 to May 4, found Bush eliciting strong emotions from Minnesotans. Forty-four percent of the respondents said they strongly disapprove of Bush's job performance while 29 percent said they strongly approve.

EXCELLENT piece on PBS TV about the 500,000 mentally ill in PRISON in the United States. Ever since Reagan changed the very government definition of "mentally ill" so that the feds didn't have to pay to keep sick folks in mental hospitals... we have, Nationally 1/10th that number of mentally ill in mental institutions.

That's 50,000 in mental institutions (where they actually belong) as opposed to half a million in prison. It also means that 16% of folks incarcerated in America are those diagnosed as mentally ill. Most of these inmates in our prison system are schizophrenic or have some other sort of pathology where modern diagnostic tests are readily available. This means none of these conditions are faked. ALL of these inmates committed crimes to get into prison... from murder... all the way down to jaywalking or shoplifting food. Judges know that the mentally ill will be cared for in prison... so they send them there. Parole boards know that these patient/inmates are receiving care in prison so they are reluctant to release them into a world that cannot care for them... where they may hurt others or themselves.

This is just wrong, folks. The prison system knows it is wrong. The mental health profession knows it is wrong. Legal and law enforcement professionals know it is wrong. But... because of Ronald Reagan's thoughtless "budget cuts" ... no one can do anything about it.

Franken needs to be funny... I mean REALLY funny to be effective. Sam can actually be effective and fully credible without being the least bit funny... which in his case, is fortunate.

That's not a slam on Sam's comedic abilities. On MRR, Sam is very funny sometimes. I'm saying that when he goes on MSNBC or some other dink TV show... he doesn't need to mix comedy with his opinions or facts. He's got a very credible aire about him and commands intellectual respect APART from his being a comedian.

I AM saying he is more effective than Al Franken, although Al does have his moments. I'll watch him on Maher this next week when I get a chance.

It's not a "Sandra Bullock" movie.

Her character is pretty much a bitch, and her part is pretty small. Don Cheadle is the lead role.

Until the End of the World is good up until the final third or so. Then it gets really preachy. That's a problem with Wim Wenders's (the director) later work.

Why is it that when liberals do radio or hold a conference, the audio is always messed up? witness: Al's show in LA on Friday -- filled with feedback, low levels, distortion, unintelligible at times. And another example, the media consolidation conference in St Louis, where the video archives of the first day don't play on a PC? but do play on a Mac?

View any right wing or GOP conference, or listen on radio and the audio is 'right there,' no feedback, no missing tracks, nicely level controlled, easy to listen to even though the message is lousy.

My theory: liberals/progressives will never win another election unless this audio problem gets fixed. ;) But seriously, why can't the liberal side produce a conference or radio with decent audio? what is it?

I have always worked in the Electrical field, started at 18 as an apprentice worked my way up to a Journeyman. Got a job at GE as a Electrical/Electronic Maintenance Tech. laid off after 21 years. Been doing my own thing this Oct, will be 5 years.

Bulgaria to host three US military bases: minister

SOFIA - The US Congress has decided to use three Bulgarian military bases for the deployment of US forces, Defence Minister Nikolay Svinarov said on Saturday.

“It has not yet been clarified which exactly those bases will be, but we know there will be three of them,” Svinarov told BTA news agency.

A US governmental delegation was expected to arrive in Bulgaria in the coming days to discuss the bases, the Bulgarian army said last week.

The stationing of US troops in Bulgaria is part of a broader US strategy of shifting troops based in Europe further east.

The aim is to move soldiers from positions chosen to cope with a possible Soviet invasion of Europe to a deployment better suited to the current US preoccupation with terrorism and conflicts in the Middle East.

because i LOVE LOVE LOVE books...and the same with sorting and organizing things...i love looking up information and helping people find things they want to know...i don't want kids but i want to be around them...i want to teach people to read and use computers and i have a library at home of about 900 books...it IS the perfect job for me...i might like to actually go to school for the actual title of librarian...but going to school costs too much money...i was enrolled in some classes down at the j.c. and then when i realized i could learn the same stuff online...(it was html programming)...i decided to teach myself online instead and dropped the class...i heard the other day that the number one thing that causes older people to have to move back in with their family is student loan debt....why can the library teach people for free and schools can't...whatever...but i would have to take school to be an actual librarian so ...we'll see...

I hear ya on ebay fees...husbot sold his first car on there the other day...that might be worth the time for the money...it was a 1950 chevy sports coup...buy it now for 6300...and there were people at the woman's door (the seller he selling it for) who were offering like 7k+ for it...so now he knows that buy it now on a car isn't worth it...he could made lots more...well she could have...he actually lowballed her for his cut...considering all the time he spent with her to get it ready to sell and listed...he even had to wash the car before he took the pics...!

US drone plane kills Al-Qaeda leader in Pakistan: report

WASHINGTON, May 13 (AFP) - An Al-Qaeda leader from Yemen was killed this week by a missile fired by an unmanned CIA Predator plane in a mountain region of Pakistan close to the border with Afghanistan, US media reported Friday.

Teens seek debate vs. Limbaugh

Rush Limbaugh said on his nationally syndicated radio show that Evanston Township High School students "don't know anything about World War II" and "they've probably never heard the name Adolf Hitler" because they're so focused on a multicultural curriculum.

Some Evanston kids want to show Limbaugh what they know. They want to debate him on American history.

"I think [a debate] would be great because then we'd prove him wrong and open up his opinion a little bit," Sarah Loeb, an ETHS sophomore, said Thursday.

'Balkanizing this country'

Limbaugh's comments came after he read a Christian Science Monitor article Tuesday that profiled global studies courses required at ETHS. Limbaugh railed against multicultural education generally and singled out the North Shore school.

"What multiculturalists is, is balkanizing this country," Limbaugh said Tuesday. "People are coming here from various parts of the world and they're bringing their cultures with them and the multiculturalists are saying 'your culture is better than the American culture. The American culture is discriminatory, it's racist, sexist, bigot, homophobic.' "

Limbaugh's producer did not return a call on whether Limbaugh would agree to a debate.

Senator Chafee didn't take a stand during Thursday's Foreign Relations Commitee hearing -- but believe it or not, after see-sawing back and forth, he is still holding open the option of voting against Bolton on the floor of the Senate. The Senator could have been a real hero to reasonable people everywhere by killing the nomination in committee, but that wasn't to be.

However, I know that the overwhelming lobbying effort you made -- including thousands of phone calls and petition signatures -- has kept hope alive as to Senator Chafee's final vote on the matter.

The U.S. Is Leading the Race to the Bottom

The Bush administration’s attempt to dismantle Social Security and push more health care costs onto individuals coincides with the longest slide in real wages in two decades. As labor costs in the United States continue to decline, employers in other advanced nations will feel pressured to lower their costs to avoid further erosion in their competitive position.

Although we typically think of developing nations as the primary setting for the race to the bottom in labor costs, the competition is now unfolding between the U.S. and the other developed nations, which compete as exporters and as locations for foreign direct investment.

Under the Bush administration, the United States is leading the race to the bottom in wages, benefits, working conditions and social protections. Many of the companies that once considered investing in Western Europe or Japan are now investing in the U.S. as the new low-wage center of the developed world. Bush’s soft dollar policy has also made the U.S. a low-cost location at the expense of Europe.

Average total annual compensation for U.S. workers now stands at $33,195, compared with $50,445 in Germany, $46,541 in the U.K., $45,879 in France and $45,839 in Japan, according to new international pay data from Mercer HR Consulting, the largest human resources consulting firm in the world and the source of widely respected compensation studies.

Employment costs in the U.K. are now 40 percent higher than in the U.S. In Western Europe, costs are 23 percent higher than in the U.S., according to the Mercer survey data. Although the U.S. is commonly considered a high-wage nation, the decline in real wages and the sharp rise in the number of low-paying service jobs has greatly reduced the average wage.

A Terrorist Comes Home to Roost

WASHINGTON -- The sudden and untimely arrival on U.S. territory of a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) asset and admitted terrorist, Luis Posada Carriles, poses an embarrassing challenge to the credibility of the Bush administration's war on terrorism.

Posada, who in an interview with the New York Times seven years ago admitted to organizing a wave of bombings in Cuba in 1997 that killed an Italian tourist and injured 11 others, is best known as the prime suspect in the bombing of a Cubana Airlines flight shortly after it took off from Barbados in October 1976.

The incident, in which all 73 crew members and passengers including teenaged members of Cuba's national fencing team were killed, was the first confirmed mid-air terrorist bombing of a commercial airliner.

Then-President George Bush in 1990 pardoned Orlando Bosch, another Cuban exile opposed to President Fidel Castro and implicated in the plot, overruling a strong U.S. Justice Department opinion that called for Bosch's deportation.

Posada, who also worked for the operation supplying ''Contra'' rebels in Central America in the mid-1980s until the Iran-Contra scandal broke open with the downing of one of its planes, was also convicted of conspiring to assassinate Castro during a 2000 visit to Panama. A Panamanian court sentenced him to eight years in prison in 2004 but he was unexpectedly pardoned by outgoing President Mireya Moscosa last September and flew to Honduras.

”This is a real test of (President) George W. Bush's commitment to fighting terrorism,” said Peter Kornbluh, a Latin American specialist at the non-governmental National Security Archive (NSA). This week, the organization released a series of declassified U.S. documents that detailed Posada's terrorist history and his previous association with the CIA.

More Proof Iraq War Was Pre-Determined
The newly-released Downing Street Memo showing President Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair decided to go to war with Iraq in 2002 has once again raised the question of why the Bush administration lied to America in the lead up to the conflict. And amazingly, it is not the only piece of hard evidence proving that - well before the war (and during the supposed "diplomatic" phase) - the Bush administration had already decided to go to war in Iraq - no matter whether Iraq was really an "imminent threat" or not.

The background: Throughout 2002 and early 2003, the administration repeatedly insisted that they sought a peaceful solution to the Iraq question and that war was only a last resort. In October of 2002, for instance, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said said, "We're going to seek a peaceful solution to this. We think that one is possible" [Source: CBS, 10/20/02]. Then in November of 2002, she said, "We all want very much to see this resolved in a peaceful way" [Source: White House Briefing, 11/21/02]. In March of 2003, she claimed "we are still in a diplomatic phase here" [Source: ABC News, 3/9/03].

We know now, however, that was a complete lie, and that U.S. plans for war were being pushed before 2003, and even before 2002. It was a pre-determined strategy. Not only do we have the newly-released Downing Street memo, but we have other evidence as well:

I was in the air national guard so I could be safe from conflict. However, I started doing drugs because of the pressures of learning the technical aspects of flying. While sitting in the "kiddy" seat of a trainer, I lost it during a snap roll and never recovered my nerve. I stopped reporting to the guard and got lost in drugs and a job my daddy set up for me. Some think me a hero.

With all the Robertson's and his kind in the Country you would think if they were really good Christians all of Al Qaeda would be destroyed. These guys need to quit praying for money and put their attention on what's good for the Country.
