On ABC's "This Week" yesterday, Senator Biden, a Democrat of Delaware, said *Democrats should compromise* "and say to them that...we'll let a number" of the seven judges "go through, the two most extreme not to go through, and put off this vote and compromise."
Democrats might be willing to compromise if Republicans drop the handful of the most objectionable choices, Richard Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, told reporters in Washington.

Bush Worried about Saudi Fragilities
By Philippe Gélie
Le Figaro

Monday 25 April 2004

Since Ariel Sharon's visit two weeks ago, the Crawford ranch is in the process of changing its function within the Presidential arsenal. While offering the eyes of the world a favorable treatment reserved for the most distinguished visitors, his retreat in Texas also allows George W. Bush to conduct a "quiet diplomacy" in which pressures can be all the more direct for being exercised in an informal and private setting.

Saudi Arabian Crown Prince should be testing that experience today. On the menu of his discussions with the American president are several tense subjects: the rise in oil prices, the struggle against Islamic terrorism, and the rhythm of reforms in the Kingdom.

The first case is likely to be the most urgent, with an escalation of prices at the pump (by over 50 cents a gallon in a year). If George W. Bush's reelection is no longer threatened by consumer disgruntlement, his popularity quotient feels the impact, having fallen to 44% in the latest polls. Riyadh, which supplies only 15% of American imports, has already made an effort by increasing its production in March to 155,000 barrels/a day and by holding out the prospect of further increases in production. Bush, "concerned," even as he admits he doesn't have a "silver bullet," will not fail to remind the Saudi leader of his promise.

However, a partner this important and complicated is not to be rushed. Involved in the democratization of the Middle East, the American president will have to reiterate his encouragement of the House of Saud's timid process of opening up. In his State of the Union speech in February, Bush had called upon Riyadh to "demonstrate leadership in the region by expanding the people's role in the determination of their future." The recent elections to local councils, which notably excluded women, are not cited as an example in Washington, but the White House insists on the right of each country to advance "at its own pace."

Senator Patrick Leahy
Senate Floor Remarks
On Republicans’ Exploitation of Faith in Judicial Nominations
April 22, 2005

. . . Dividing the American people along religious lines is wrong. Smearing political opponents as “anti-faith” is despicable. Apparently some will stop at nothing and stump to any level. No scurrilous charge is too coarse; no baseless accusation is too outlandish. When a few of us attended the funeral of Pope John Paul II in Rome as part of the official Senate delegation recently, Democrats – but not Republicans -- were castigated for not being present in Washington. When we explain in public session the basis on which we have decided to oppose a nomination that we do not feel merits a lifetime appointment to the federal bench, the judicial activism we have catalogued about the nomination is ignored and we are smeared as “anti” this or “anti” that.

I thank the many religious leaders who have come forward this week to uphold America’s great traditions of respecting faith, honoring faith and, ensuring that the constitutional prohibition against any religious test for public office be strictly observed. Christian leaders from a variety of denominations, Muslim leaders and Jewish leaders have joined together to reject these disgraceful and polarizing efforts of a few partisans injecting religion in the discussion of judicial nominations. They have publicly denounced the efforts of the religious demagogues making slanderous charges in a win-at-all-costs bid to rile the passions and further divide Americans from one another. I am grateful for their voices. We need less division, not more. We need to work together more not less.

    The     Awful     Facts

[Transcript of an audio recording]

*clap of thunder followed by a background ghostly robotic music*

“Myriad moons ago, in the land of Pharaoh, there came to power a Being of wondrous propensities.
He was called Amenhotep IV. Amemhotep IV envisioned, and then implemented, a monumental and unsurpassed addition to culture. Amenhotep IV was the first to have a society introduced to the theology of a one-god religion. Yes, Amenhotep IV institutionalized monotheism, a religion of one god.

This was a true monotheism, not the polytheism that Judaism, Christianity and Islam, each usually having at least two gods ~ the one all-benevolent, the other all-evil ~ have been for hundreds and hundreds of years.
Yes, Amenhotep proclaimed the Aten, the Sun God, as the only god in all the universe; he even changed his name to reflect this new devotional imagery.

No prosaic Pharaoh was he, the works of Egyptian art were advanced to a vastly, almost impressionist, beautiful form.
Of course when a vast change comes many resist it. After all, the feebleminded peasants were content to have had their religion spoonfeed to them by, less than astute, ancestors.
The established priests didn’t want one-god concepts cutting into their lucrative, wholly unholy, business.

Nevertheless, the Pharaohs were considered gods in their own right.
Ergo, any opposition to the new religion was wee and reserved. But the only people to sincerely embrace Amenhotep’s religion were the upperclass, very well educated members of his governmental theocratic oligarchy. This was no small number, the ancient Egyptian government was a vast institution.

Not terribly long after Amenhotep’s demise the priests and peasants of the polytheist deities were once again able to gain political power.
They began a systematic, and extremely well financed, program of wiping any trace of the reign of Amenhotep IV from the face of the Earth. His name, original as well as his new, were obli

Senate Floor Remarks

April 22, 2005

. . . I share the disappointment of the more than 400 religious leaders who have written Senator Frist urging him “to repudiate those who misuse religious for political purposes and who impugn the faith of any who disagree with them.” All of us need to, as these religious leaders put it, “repudiate the message of divisiveness and religious manipulation.” The Reverend Dr. C. Weldon Gaddy, President of The Interfaith Alliance, also recently wrote to Senator Frist to warn against transforming “religion by baptizing it as a disciple of partisan politics.” Abraham Foxman, National Director of the Anti-Defamation League, reminded Senator Frist: “Religious liberty has flourished in our nation precisely because Americans have been steadfast in their commitment against sowing religious discord as means to achieve political success.”

I also thank the distinguished leader of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, Rabbi David Saperstein, for his statement. Rabbi Saperstein notes that with respect to the upcoming broadcast in which Senator Frist will be lending his support:

“The telecast is scheduled to take place on the second night of the Passover holiday, when Jews around the world gather together to celebrate our religious freedom. It was in part for exactly such freedom that we fled Egypt. It was in part for exactly such freedom that so many of us came to this great land. And it is in very large part because of exactly such freedom that we and our neighbors have built a nation uniquely welcoming to people of faith—of all faiths.”

The polytheist re-writers of history were very efficient, but not 100% so. Monotheism’s followers were also persecuted.
To even utter the former Pharaoh’s name was a crime punishable by a sound thrashing or even death!
Thus, these believes in a single god, who used to end all prayers by speaking the new name Amenhotep had chosen, reverted back to ending their supernally aimed beseeching with the words - “Freed From Doubt by Amenhotep.”

But this was also seen as a blasphemous act by the ancient polytheistic spin-doctors. So, they needed to conclude their prayers, to their singular god, with another sound of solemn ratification.
And that way soon became the word - - - AMEN !

Moreover, those who descended from Amenhotep’s followers, though many changes have been made to their religion over the long years, became know as.....the Jews.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Insurgents in Iraq have unleashed another attack on the country's oil facilities.

An official with Iraq's Northern Oil Company says attackers have blown up pumps used for domestic supplies near Kirkuk. No injuries are reported.

Two militant attacks yesterday killed at least 29 people in Baghdad and Tikrit.

In the Baghdad attack, a second suicide car bomber drove into a crowd of people rushing to help the victims of an earlier blast.

U.S. Senate Democrats Seek Compromise on Bush Judicial Nominees

April 25 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Senate Democratic leaders said they may be willing to allow Senate votes on some of President George W. Bush's seven disputed judicial nominees to avoid a showdown that threatens to stymie legislation.

Democrats might be willing to compromise if Republicans drop the handful of the most objectionable choices, Richard Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, told reporters in Washington.

``I would rather dance than fight. I want to do everything I can to avoid this,'' Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada said in an interview on CNN.

Few in U.S. Living Healthy Lifestyles
By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) -- Even though everybody seems to know what a healthy lifestyle is, very few actually live it, a new study contends.

Those who don't smoke, eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, exercise regularly and maintain a normal weight account for only 3 percent of the adult population in the United States, according to the report in the April 25 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"We looked at national representative data for 2000," said study co-author Mathew J. Reeves, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Michigan State University. "We wanted to see the proportion of adults that met the definition for a healthy lifestyle."

In their study, Reeves and his colleague Ann P. Rafferty, from the Michigan Department of Community Health, collected data on 153,805 adults from all over the country. The data came from the 2000 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which is an annual survey of the nation's health.

NO MEANS NO ON REJECTED JUDGES

aww gee guys . . . you haven't mentioned our URL on the air in what seems like the longest time. we are doing a major mobilization in support of the right to filibuster:

http://www.usalone.com

our one click form at The People's Email Network sends your personal message directly to all your members of Congress at once. we generated almost 10,000 messages (each to two senators) in opposition to Bolton and may have been a factor (more backbone on our side, more pause on the other). thankfully it was enough to carry the day.

you of course understand the whole POINT of that Justice Sunday circus was to generate messages to Congress. let's see their call to action and raise them one better. our form returns a results page after the one click with the phone and fax numbers of your senators too. it does everything!

http://www.usalone.com

let the other side do their call to action and let Congress hear mostly opposition in response. please help. EVERYBODY speak out now. post the link above everywhere you can to everyone you know.

peace,

The Pen

Jung's notion of the collective unconscious had to do with certain images and ideas that cut across all cultures -- he believed that they were all hardwired into our brains. But if you're interested in Freud-era crowd theory (i.e. the behavior of people when part of a crowd), check out Gustave LeBon's writings -- they're wacky and fascinating!

Jung and the collective unconscious is about we as a human race have the same unconcious tools (animus, anima, etc.) and symbols (mandalas, crosses, etc.) in our being. Some misread that and think Jung suggests we are all psychically linked somehow or something like that. Not so much.

BTW, current brain studies suggest that maybe (big maybe) these symbols might be related to the test firing of the unborn eye's rods and cones. How freaky would that be?

Nelson: Let's make a deal
By Alexander Bolton

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.), who is working on a bipartisan compromise to end the filibuster of judicial nominees, said he believes that his party’s practice of blocking confirmation votes on controversial nominees has put him and fellow Democratic centrists in politically difficult positions.

Nelson, who accepts recent comparisons between himself and former Sen. John Breaux (D-La.), a centrist Democratic dealmaker, suggested that a few Democrats in so-called red states might be relieved should the prospect of filibustering the president’s nominees be eliminated. He discussed his emerging role on judicial nominees during a luncheon interview with The Hill last week.

But Mohammad Naser, a 32-year-old Afghan "freedom fighter" and pointman for a multi-million-dollar heroin ring based in New York funneled profits from drug sales in upper Manhattan back to the resistance movement in the mountains of Afghanistan.

U.S. Arrests Reputed Afghan Drug Lord

http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-4962290,00.html

NEW YORK (AP) - A reputed Afghan drug lord who authorities say operated with the protection of the Taliban has been captured and faces charges that he tried to smuggle more than $50 million worth of heroin into the United States, authorities said.

Bashir Noorzai, who is on the U.S. list of most-wanted drug kingpins, was in custody in New York and was awaiting arraignment later Monday on the charges. Prosecutors say the smuggling attempt involved about 1,100 pounds of heroin.

Authorities said he was arrested while traveling to the United States, but declined to give details. U.S. Attorney David Kelley also refused to comment on reports that the defendant has ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network.

``It's not something that's part of the case,'' Kelley said.

About the time of the story in 1992 was the discovery of the "Dirty 30". They were Corrupt cops operating in the 3-0 precient in Washington Heights in Manhattan and as I recall it was also about the same time Larry Davis was arrested after shooting 6 detectives who tried to kill him. He was dealing drugs for the cops up there.

A month earlier Manuel De Dios Unanue, The former editor of El Diario newspaper was killed execution style in Queens by a 17 year old, under the order of Jose Sanacruz Londono - A Colombian Drug Lord.

From the depths of an armchair came a sigh of infinite sadness "Gimme a peach!" Harsh and hollow, the voice issued cavernously from a lantern-jawed American with blue cheeks. He was incongruously clad in a Greek dress, with sandals. It is difficult to find a philosophical reason for disliking the combination of this costume with a pronounced Chicago accent. But one does. He was Lavinia's brother; he wore the costume as an advertisement; it was part of the family game. As he himself would explain in confidence, it made people think he was a fool, which enabled him to pick their pockets while they were preoccupied with this amiable delusion.

"Who said peaches?" observed a second sleeper, a young Jewish artist of uncannily clever powers of observation.

Religion is also a means of "social control" in that it sets rules of acceptable behavior. In its ideal form it does have a civilizing effect, but since people are involved it is often used for political purposes. One example of how religion can't affect a society is the "one issue" voter, he or she is told by their priest or pastor, etc. not to vote for any candidate who supports legal abortion. All other issues, including economic, are ignored. Social control.

Pascal's Wager is a bogus wager, Janeane. It assumes you know what god is out there and can comprehend said god's motivations.

Specifically, which god are you believing in? What makes you think the god that truly exists is going to enjoy the fact that you believed in this other, fake god? You've just avoided the wrong hell.

On top of that, what makes you think that the god that truly exists is going to enjoy the fact that you only believed in order to win a silly bet rather than out of deep devotion and faith?

But it doesn't work on the other side, either. Deep devotion in, say, the Christian god is of not help when you die and come before Anubis.

Too, even if the Bible (assumed merely for the sake of the argument) were a product of god, it is an assumption that god wants you to believe in it. Perhaps god much prefers those who would eschew the easy way out of a book (especially one as vague and contradictory as the Bible) in favor of actual examination of the physical world around. Perhaps god wants people to use the intelligence and brains that were bestowed upon us and would rather have us be wrong but striving to understand. Perhaps that holy book was merely a test to see who would take the easy way out.

Note, there is a difference between acknowledging that you have no idea what the reality of the situation may be and "keeping your options open." There simply is no way to keep your options open because god may intensely dislike the act of "keeping your options open."

Polytheism seems to be more of a running dialog between humans and the forces of nature in the form of various myths and metaphors.

Records: Writer at White House 196 Times

ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) - A conservative writer who quit his job covering President Bush amid criticism for his pointedly political questions visited the White House 196 times in two years, the Secret Service has disclosed.

James D. Guckert, who wrote under the name Jeff Gannon, was Washington bureau chief for Talon News, a conservative online news outlet associated with another Web site, GOPUSA. Guckert posed questions with conservative overtones, attracting scrutiny from liberal bloggers who linked Guckert with online domain addresses suggestive of gay pornography. Guckert resigned in February.

Yeah, We the People can't let these Douche Bags in power DESTROY the right of minority groups to Filibuster !!! They were talking about this today on CNN, and Bill Frist should get a whole new fucking name for himself, entitled "Fristing". Instead of "fisting", in which someone jams a whole fist up a greasy HOLE, "Fristing" is now the term when a conservative Douche Bag in power tries to fist FUCK THE WHOLE NATION !!!! Queefs like Bill Frist are trying to Frist Fuck the Statue of Liberty, and We Shall NOT STAND FOR THAT KIND OF BULLSHIT !!

"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" is a GREAT Classic Movie, imagine if he couldn't have stood up there and said what he truly believed in? The buttholes in power would've won that day, but no, he told it like it was and he showed all those corrupt mutha fuckaz just the way it is, and that's why these Douche Bags who are trying to destroy the Filibuster are trying to destroy Democracy too, and these wicked Douche Bags should be mutha fuckin' STOPPED before it's too fuckin' late!

Great Mae West flick on TCM right now if you get that chan. - 'She Done Him Wrong'.

A Short Treasury of Mae's Quotations...

It's better to be looked over than overlooked.
I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.
Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?
It's not the men in your life-it's the life in your men!
So many men, so little time!
Anything worth doing, is worth doing slowly.
Give a man a free hand, and he will run it all over you!
I've been in more laps than a napkin.
She's the kind of girl who climbed the ladder of success wrong by wrong.
I generally avoid temptation unless I can resist it.
Too much of a good thing is wonderful.
When choosing between two evils, I always like to take the one I never tried before.
I'm no angel, but I've spread my wings a bit.
Too many girls follow the line of least resistance-but a good line is hard to resist.
All discarded lovers should be given a second chance, but with someone else.
When a girl goes bad, men go right after her!
The score never interested me-only the game.
I'll always be where the action is, you can count on that!

THE TWO PARTIES ARE STAGING THESE VERY PUBLIC BATTLES:

No one is caving, both D's and R's want to maintain the illusion of this sad nation being a democracy.

They are both concerned that their positions make it very obvious how much they support totalitarianism.

They are pretending to reach an agreement that is democraticly reached.

Really all they are doing is agreeing to 'act' like this is a democracy so the public doesn't catch on.
---------------------------------

Note:

There's no reason for R's & D's to Talk
They both want the same thing.

To make sure the public can't challenge the dictates of corporations. And to maintain the illusion of this sad nation being a democracy.

Freedom is as much of an illusion as Corporate Accounting and Audits.

Our children are the serfs of corporate boards deviding the earth for the welfare of the top 2 % making $o.5 Million or greater.

Gosh, are you still proud to be an american, assholes?

This nation is not a democracy.

Corporations own both parties.

Slavery and genocide were legal under the original constitution.

That is what corporations are trying to hold on to as a matter of law.

If the society progresses to Europe's standards, they lose the right to declaire unilateral war whenever they want to, to terrorize the world into conformity.

We are a totalitarian dictatorship to the world and corporations like it that way, profit is through the roof!

Justice Sunday which is a natrual continuation of the Schiavo protests is the best thing that has happened for dems in a long time. This is where we turn this around. The right has over extended itself and they are out on a limb. The moderates and swing voters are not going out there with them. They make Atonin Scalia look like a moderate. They are isolating themselves. It's a major miscalculation but they simply cannot help themselves from doing it.

Do you approve or disapprove of the way Bush is handling:
Approve Disapprove
A. Social Security 31 64
B. Iraq 42 56
C. Economy 40 57

A lot of other stuff, but this one is my favorite:

Which party better represents your personal values?

He may be a hard-ass who is a tough guy to work for. Why shouldn't any American president have the team that he/she desires? Bolton isn't a fellon and as far as I can tell. He's "America First". Of course other nations will oppose Bush's appointments. Of course other nations will try to divide this country in any way to deminish our status.

The economic bust is based on the export of capital to areas where the democracy is suppressed and the return on dollars invested is therefore greater. As US manufactures less in relation to what we import the value of the dollar declines unless the oligarchs can't twist arms around the world to maintain the value artifically. If the US currency weren't propt up by the Pentagon, this capital flight would not have been possible and the US would still be productive. This can't go on forever.

Janeane : Please don't panic but here in the land of enchantment where I and two thousand fellow workers toil the largest church in town is the Unitarian church. Unitarians are generally considered to be “Christians that aren’t quite sure”. The major constituent of the membership are people who work here where I do and most are believers in the existence of some power beyond ours. We, on a regular basis, both create matter from energy and destroy matter to make energy but haven’t managed to create life. The physical chemists are the first to tell you that natural systems left to their own recourse will turn gold into lead and not via versa. The second law of thermodynamics says that natural systems left to their own recourse will tend to go to the most random state, yet we, the most complex entity on the planet, do indeed exist. It is the opinion of most that this can’t be the result of random occurrences. When your job description has to do with creating ingenious ways to make as many carbon /water objects vanish in as short a time as possible one might ask “how can you be a Christian and do that” The general answer is that with the current economy its one hell of a way to make a living. Lets get Jimmy Carter’s energy program back ASAP before we all go to CERN or Vladimir.

There was a great article from ePluribus posted at Kos today that would make a great topic. An interview with Wilson, he held very little back and offered lots of insight into what happened with Valerie Plame. Great reading.

New Gannon Documents Create More Questions
by Rep Louise Slaughter
Mon Apr 25th, 2005 at 17:14:25 PDT

I wanted to make sure you all saw the letter that Rep. Conyers and I sent to White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan today in response to documents we obtained from a Freedom of Information Act request on Jeff Gannon from the Department of Homeland Security.
Raw Story has many of the documents we obtained up on their site as well as some good coverage of the story. Be sure to check them out.

By the way... we've taken many of your tips and our new campaign website, complete with Slaughter's Sluggers (Online Action Center) will be up and running sometime in early to mid-May. As always you will be the first to know.

"Good point. I was speaking in the commonly used sense of God. Since women are the ones who actually bring forth life if there is a God she is probably a women. I stand corrected.

the point is the hypocrisy

so I DO MIND if you're gay and being a whore for the White House that turns around and spits venom at people for being gay.

There's a technique in court where if one side brings up something you weren't allowed to argue, then you may proceed to use that issue to argue...

something like 'opening the door' then the 'ball' is in play.

It would be one thing if they'd never brought gay bashing into it...but since they have they deserve to have it brought up in every instance where they engage in the practice of homosexuality.

You can't have it both ways.... well...ahem... maybe you can't have it 4 ways...oh nevermind....

What goes on in the Whitehouse stays in the Whitehouse.

ROFL

Tell that to Wild Bill and Monica.

Seems it's all kielbasas stuck in bagels

It's so simply obvious that Gan/Guk was a mole tasked with exposing the lib/gay agenda and reporting back to the highest levels.

Yes, it's all a plan, a conspiricy to use the gay left against itself.

Example: Janeane has had to self-censor repaeatedly that there is not a single problem with gay/straight/man-on-dog sex BUT there is a problem with the right using homo sex as a wedge.

Seems like the wedge has been set and by Janeane et al talking about this issue like it really is important is just increasing the "hammering".

dear Dexter2999,

All patches applied as per your request.

As a general rule we believe it is best to speak out to ALL your members of Congress all the time. For example, even though the house has already passed the Paris Hilton Tax Relief Act (Estate Tax) and the Energy Bill, as we take up these battles in the house we need to REMIND our house reps how opposed we are to what they are already done. There are still conference situations to consider. But the filibuster issue is so Senate specific, yes, best to restrict the submission to Senate only.

With regards to Bolton, even though that seems to be a Senate issue on its face, it brings up questions of perversion and distortion of intelligence also of interest to members of the house. That issue is still live, notwithstanding the victory of the day.

This is interesting...apparently George Bush *does* read a newspaper every once in a while. It's a good thing, too, because otherwise how would he find out what policy he's agreed to:

Bush pulls Marvin Gaye routine,
asks "What's going on?"

"President Bush expressed dismay yesterday over plans to require American, Canadian and Mexican citizens to show passports to enter the United States — a requirement of an intelligence-reform bill he signed late last year — saying it could 'disrupt the honest flow of traffic.'

"'When I first read that in the newspaper, about the need to have passports, for particularly the day crossings that take place — about a million, for example in the state of Texas — I said, "What's going on here?"' Bush told the American Society of Newspaper Editors. 'I thought there was a better way to... expedite the legal flow of traffic and people.'

"Bush said he has instructed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the Department of Homeland Security to review the plan to see if there is any way to lessen the impact, such as using electronic fingerprint imaging 'to serve as a so-called passport for daily traffic.'

"A senior U.S. government official said State Department and Homeland Security officials had vetted [the passport requirement] exhaustively with the White House before announcing it April 5."
