Social Justice Sunday: Who is participating?

Thank you abbyv in the comments for posting the link to the Every Voice Network (progressive Episcopalian) web site. It was on that site that I found this from the National Council of Churches:

Disagreeing Without Demonizing
NCC General Secretary Challenges Planners of 'Justice Sunday' for Attacking Fellow Christians

A partisan political campaign to change the Senate filibuster rules has taken a detour through church-state territory, and NCC General Secretary Bob Edgar has challenged the tactics as "dangerous and divisive" to the nation's religious and public life. In a statement issued Tuesday, Edgar says: "We are surprised and grieved by a campaign launched this week by Family Research Council and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who said that those who disagree with them on President Bushs judicial nominees are 'against people of faith.' "This campaign, which they are calling 'Justice Sunday,' should properly be called 'Just-Us' Sunday. Their attempt to impose on the entire country a narrow, exclusivist, private view of truth is a dangerous, divisive tactic. It serves to further polarize our nation, and it disenfranchises and demonizes good people of faith who hold political beliefs that differ from theirs.

Man, I hate it when Janeane say "no" in response to a guest's comment and then goes on to say what she thinks is true as though it is fact. Why can't she just say, "well, I think it more like this..." or "I disagree, I believe...."

Interrupting a guest and saying "you're wrong" about really dumb things like glam rockers is just plain rude. And I know she doesn't mean to be that way, it just comes off like that.

Watch The Newsroom, a great CBC series.

Posted by: Anonymous at April 20, 2005 09:13 PM

------------------------------

Many years ago the series ran on PBS in the ny area. A season of half hour shows. Couldn't bear to get into it until years later they ran the whole season of shows back to back, what a friggen' treat. I then realized the brillance of Finkleman and now by chance caught a current program the other nite, still don't know what channel since we get no TV guide for cable TV.

Barbara Boxer speaks truth to power:

John Bolton's nomination is dividing the country. This is a man who has shown nothing but contempt for the United Nations throughout his career. This is a man who has bullied intelligence analysts to try to get them to say what he wants, even when it's not true. This is a man who doesn't get along well with others and, if confirmed, would be entrusted with representing our nation in sensitive diplomatic negotiations at the United Nations.

Surely we can do better. Surely we can find a nominee for UN Ambassador that America can support and get behind -- not someone who divides our country and alienates our allies.

Tell President Bush to send the Senate a new UN nominee -- please sign my petition to the White House now:

http://ga4.org/campaign/new_nominee

Every President has the right to choose senior members of his Administration. But every President also has an obligation to the American people that those nominees are well qualified for the positions they seek.

THE BEST "SCIENCE" MONEY CAN BUY...

Forty public policy groups have this in common: They seek to undermine the scientific consensus that humans are causing the earth to overheat...and they all get money from ExxonMobil.

From 2000 to 2003, Exxon funneled more than $8 million into a network of think tanks, quasi-journalistic media outlets, and civic and religious groups, to great effect.

While peer-reviewed scientific journals contain virtually nothing that challenges the consensus on anthropogenic global warming, a flood of reports, press releases, and op-ed columns has succeeded in creating the illusion of scientific controversy, seized on by sympathetic lawmakers like Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), who calls global warming a "hoax" and -- whaddya know! -- also receives buckets of money from Exxon.

I heard though that Coulter said in an interview with Geraldo (ehhww) that she slept around a lot and would go out to bars, clubs and pick up guys and have sex with them. So apparently she's a total slut. Try using that to pitch to the family values crowd.

My cable system does offer EuroNews on the digital tier which is a Belgian-based trans-European news service which is the only alternative news perspective I get through US cable and satellite TV other than the BBC News cut-ins on PBS and BBC America.

Something that has been bothering me for a long time:

Progressives/Liberals/Democrats have got to stop using the term "pro-life" to describe those who oppose Choice. The opposite of "Pro-Choice" is "Anti-Choice".

The right wing have given validity to their position by employing the term "pro-life" because it implies that those support a woman's right to reproductive choice are "pro-death".

We need to start emphasising that "choice" means having the right to say "no" as well as "yes" to abortion, contraception, etc.

CBC has a couple of good political satire shows, "Royal Canadian Air Farce" which is sketch humor and has its moments. "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" which is a combination of sketches and "Daily Show"-esque humor. And last, "Rick Mercer's Monday Report" which is more like the Daily Show although he does bits on the road. Rick Mercer used to be on 22 minutes but went out on his own. He was also on a satire of the TV industry called "Made In Canada" which aired in the US under the title "The Industry"

And besides the news and documentaries, CBC also is the only outlet in North America running the new "Doctor Who" series.

Connecticut on Wednesday became the second state to offer civil unions to gay couples -- and the first to do so without being forced by the courts.

About an hour after the state Senate sent her the legislation, Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell signed into law a bill that will afford same-sex couples in Connecticut many of the rights and privileges of married couples.

France to vote on EU constitution May 29, anti-government sentiment on riseDocument Actions EU Constitution04/03/2005

The European Union's nascent constitution will get its first real make-or-break test on May 29 when French voters are called on to decide whether to adopt the landmark charter.
President Jacques Chirac, aware that a 'no' vote could scuttle the constitution, which theoretically requires approval in all 25 EU states to come into effect, on Friday had his office announce the referendum date.
"The president of the republic has decided that the referendum on the European constitution will take place May 29, 2005," a statement from his Elysee palace said.
Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin effectively launched the campaign in favour of the referendum immediately afterwards, by having an article published in afternoon Le Monde newspaper in which he called the vote "urgent" and "historic".
But, though Chirac has staked his personal prestige -- and his legacy -- on having the referendum approved, the outcome is far from certain.
The French electorate, angry over economic and labour reforms imposed by the conservative government and wary over Chirac's push to have Turkey become an EU member in the future, is in a volatile mood.

Dear Janeanne,
I listened last night. Because there are so few outlets for the kind of straight-talking sanity that you and Mark are delivering up I ask you to be a little more circumspect of the tone of the discourse; that tiff over "taint" was a little bit like study hall back at high school or Gilda Radner and Bill Murray when they did that SNL skit about the kids. (As you probably know by now, "taint" is also a noun). I was a Latin major in college and words have always been a thing with me. I went to Columbia and my favorite teacher was a man named Henry Steele Commager, Jr. (he was a Latin professor--he's the son of a very famous US history professor) and he was really into wordy things. This was at the time when William Safire had left Washington and had assumed the mantle of arbiter of elegance of the English language, writing those "On Language" columns in the Sunday Times. My teacher traveled in the same circles as Safire and ridiculed him to us as a poseur (mainly I guess because he didn't have a classical education--which I guess is mean but he was a Nixon hack after all). Yes taint is a noun as well as verb, but the verb is probably used more commonly today.

Speaking of SNL, I saw the James Belushi sit-com. I want B.'s DNA checked. He just can't be John's brother. If I did a show that bad (there wasn't a single joke that I couldn't see coming 10 minutes in advance) I'd want my feeding tube removed, pronto. Mark was going to be on that show? But he's not fat.

Love, Tony

The GOP's Favorite Democrat Ari Berman
Mon Apr 18,10:18 AM ET

"You're like Zell Miller without the crack," Jon Stewart once told Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. Lately, though, it looks like Nelson may be taking hits from the pipe.

Nelson, the Senate's most conservative Democrat, is drafting legislation to give bipartisan cover to Bill Frist's plan to outlaw the filibuster of judicial nominees, known as the "nuclear option." Nelson's proposal would bar the use of the filibuster and allow any Senator to call an up-or-down floor vote on any judicial nominee, even if the Senate Judiciary Committee blocks the nomination.

Essentially, Nelson is doing Frist's controversial bidding for him, at a time when conservative opposition to Frist's plan is rising--from a host of GOP moderates and from two influential right-wing groups, Gun Owners of America and the National Right to Work Committee. "When Bill Clinton was president, we, effectively, in the Judiciary Committee blocked a number of his nominees," John McCain told MSNBC. "I say to my conservative friends, some day there will be a liberal Democrat president and a liberal Democrat Congress." However, the support of one or two more centrist Democrats could resuscitate Frist's plan at the very moment it is dying.

Nelson argues that his party's well-organized resistance to the nuclear option puts red state Democrats in a tough spot. But there's a different between trying to reach consensus and giving the GOP whatever it wants. Just ask North Dakota's Kent Conrad, who recently said of the filibuster: "when judges are way outside of the mainstream, I'm willing to do it." If the president wants bipartisanship, says South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson, he could start by consulting with Democrats on his selections. Further undermining Nelson's rationale is the example of Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, a state where Bush beat John Kerry by 27 points, who has emerged as one of the most effective critics of this Administration.

If Nelson has his way, Republicans may soon control the entire judiciary. Already Republican appointees hold a majority on 10 of the nation's 13 federal appeals courts. Three more lifetime

Already Republican appointees hold a majority on 10 of the nation's 13 federal appeals courts. Three more lifetime appointments would give Republicans an advantage on every appeals court except the ninth circuit in California.

In that case, Nelson, nicknamed "Nellie" by President Bush, may earn a new moniker. We suggest Nellienquent.

200,000 Ameritrade Client Files Lost

By EMILY FREDRIX, Associated Press Writer
Wed Apr 20, 5:43 PM ET

Leading online discount broker Ameritrade Holding Corp. said Tuesday it has informed about 200,000 current and former customers that a backup computer tape containing their personal information has been lost.

The Omaha-based company mailed the notices to its clients last week, spokeswoman Donna Kush said.

The company realized the tape was missing in February, when the package it was in was damaged during shipping between vendors, Kush said. Of the four backup tapes in the package, three were found, but the fourth is still missing, she said.

Information on the tape was for people nationwide who may have been Ameritrade customers from 2000-2003, she said. The data was different for each client and may have included their Social Security numbers, among other information, Kush said.

The tapes were not marked and unless special equipment was used, the compressed data could not be extracted.

Kush said she has not heard of any misuse of the information.

"We are very confident that no harm has been done to any clients, to their accounts, to their information," Kush said.

Iraqi MPs demand US apology

Wednesday 20 April 2005, 0:47 Makka Time, 21:47 GMT

Iraqi deputies have demanded an official apology from Washington over the manhandling by US soldiers of a member of parliament at a Baghdad checkpoint.

Deputies suspended their session on Tuesday for an hour in protest against the incident involving Fatah al-Shaikh, a follower of Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and member of the dominant United Iraqi Alliance (UIA) bloc, Aljazeera reported.

They then voted unanimously on a motion demanding an official apology from the US embassy and Washington, and the punishment of the US soldier involved.

"When I told the translator with the soldier that I was a member of the National Assembly, he answered: To hell with you and the National Assembly," al-Shaikh told his colleagues.

What I don't understand is WHY Janeane interviewing K-OS. She obviously doesn't have interest and doesn't listen to hip-hop. She doesn't even realize what is the significance of K-os work. (ie. has she even listened to it?) Is this left over from Unfiltered guest list?

Who is pushing K-Os onto Majority Report? Cause the interview could have been THAT much more significant than just rants and rambles about the Bush administration and Canada-US airwave. (insight to inner working of recent progressive hip-hop.)

K-os work was not even mention in the air beyond mentioning album title. At least the interview wasn't as disasterous as Peaches interview.

Producers also didn't provide enough background material beyond making Janeane read some canned questions.

Britney Spears foetus gets a blog

I currently reside in my mother's uterus where I am spending my gestation period blogging, podcasting, chatting via instant messager, making daily appearances on my webcam, and doing the occasional interview via sonogram. Believe it or not, this is the voice of Spears' foetus who has started a blog of its own, titled The official blog of Fetus Spears. The blog is described as ''A Below-the-belly look at life inside my mother, Britney Spears: the world's most white trash pop star mommy!''

could be, if I were an actor or a musician, which I am not. The more obvious could be that the whole show doesn't have that 'satisfying information bliss'. It's more like listening to celebrity rant or somebody showing up and reading script. There is no 'weight' to the words. It's more like freestyle rant in open mic lounge nite.

Bait and Switch:Republican Senators Vote Against Healthcare for Iraq War Veterans

Every U.S. media outlet should publicize how the Republican-led Senate voted against providing desperately needed money to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for healthcare services for our wounded combat veterans. The essay exposes the "bait and switch" tactics used by the Bush Administration and their supporters in Congress.

If Peaches was a bore, then the interviewer is incompetent. I am sorry, but that's just a fact. Her work is affecting several recent groups, she creates a lot of interesting works and considered important figure in underground scene. That on top of her notoriously "eventfull" performance.

Like I say, I was wondering myself, why she is interviewing K-os, which was pretty obvious that she has no interest about his work or has an understanding why k-os is worth talking to.

Key Players in the House Ethics Mess

The Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee, officially the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, is comprised of five Democrats and five Republicans and is the only House committee where members are evenly divided along party lines.  House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) recently appointed three new Republican Members to the panel, Reps. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Tom Cole (R-OK) and Melissa Hart (R-PA).  They replace former Chairman Joel Hefley (R-CO) and Reps. Kenny Hulshof (R-MO), and Steven LaTourette (R-OH), all of whom voted along with their Democratic colleagues on the committee to admonish House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) three times last year.  Additional Republican members of the Ethics Committee include Rep. Doc Hastings (WA), the new chairman, and Judy Biggert (IL).  Democratic Members include Alan Mollohan (WV), the senior ranking member, along with Stephanie Tubbs Jones (OH), Gene Green (TX), Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA), and Michael Doyle (PA).  Rep. Mollohan has refused to allow the committee to officially organize in the 109th Congress unless a vote is allowed on his resolution to rescind the ethics rules changes proposed by the Republican House leadership that gutted the ethics process passed in January.  As of March 25, the resolution had 206 cosponsors.

Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Washington:   Hastings is the newly appointed chairman of the Ethics Committee and is viewed by many as a party loyalist.  According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Hastings has received $5,930 in campaign contributions from DeLay's political action committee, Americans for a Republican Majority (ARMPAC).  Mollohan's resolution is awaiting action in the House Subcommittee on Rules and Organization of the House; the committee chair is Doc Hastings.  Hastings has not said whether he will recuse himself in the matter.

DeLay Critic Removed From Ethics Committee
Doc Hastings Replaces Joel Hefley, Who Had Rebuked the Majority Leader Three Times

by Richard Simon

WASHINGTON — The House ethics committee chairman who presided over three rebukes of House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) was bounced from the job Wednesday and replaced by a Republican congressman from Washington state.

The new chairman is Rep. Doc Hastings, the committee's second-ranking Republican. He was named by House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) to take the gavel from Rep. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.).

In addition, Hastert appointed three new members to the panel, including two — Reps. Lamar S. Smith (R-Texas) and Tom Cole (R-Okla.) — whose political action committees have contributed to DeLay's legal defense fund. Smith's PAC contributed $5,000 in 2001 and an additional $5,000 between July and September 2004; Cole's gave $5,000 between July and September 2004.

The third new Republican member is Rep. Melissa A. Hart of Pennsylvania.

Arm twisted

In an interview with Aljazeera, al-Shaikh said the fracas started when he was on his way to parliament and had lined up in his car with other deputies to enter the Green Zone, the seat of the transitional government and home to the US embassy, foreign advisers and contractors

"While I was on my way this morning to the National Assembly, US forces surprised me by kicking my car several times in the presence of a group of my colleagues from the assembly while my car was among 15 other cars waiting to be admitted into the Green Zone," he said.

The Iraqi lawmaker said one particular US soldier targeted his car more, seemingly angered by the posters of Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr that his vehicle displayed.

Targeted
"One US soldier appeared to be designated to my car in particular, as it carried the picture of Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr.

"As though he was antagonised by the picture, the US soldier began to utter some words in English which I did not understand. When I handed out my MP badge and showed it to him, he threw it at my face, opened the car door and pulled me out."

Al-Shaikh said he was roughed up by the US soldier despite his protestations.

"The soldier twisted my hands to the back in an effort to handcuff me.

"The soldier began to beat me and squeezed me by putting his arm firmly around my neck. Then they pulled me off to a nearby room 10m away in their headquarters."

Al-Shaikh said the US soldier continued to beat him even after he told them that he was an elected MP.

The US military said it was investigating the incident and refused to comment.

Insult to injury

At least three other deputies said they witnessed the mistreatment of al-Shaikh.

"I saw the whole thing and adding insult to injury was when Iraqi soldiers drew their rifles at brother Fatah as he was being mistreated by the Americans," Ali Yushaa, an independent Shia MP, said.

Deputies took turns to speak for almost two hours about the many indignities that they and the Iraqi population suffer when coming in contact with US troops.

"According to the Geneva conventions, an occupying force must respect the occupied nation," Abd al-Khaliq Zanganah, a Kurdish MP said. "This offending soldier must be thrown out of our country."

A Sunni MP, Mudhar Shawkat, handed in the green VIP badge issued by the US military authorising him and other deputies to enter the Green Zone and said he would only attend parliament if sessions were moved to another location.

"They should be put on notice and given two months - no more - to leave the Green Zone," he said, before walking out.

Another unidentified MP shouted: "Yes, the end of occupation begins here. The Green Zone must be liberated from occupation."

Suspension threat

Speaker Hajim al-Hasani said he would suspend sessions altogether unless they moved within a week to a building on the fringes of the Green Zone that has its own entrance and would be guarded by Iraqi soldiers.

Aljazeera quoted al-Hasani as describing the incident as an assault but adding that a US investigation was under way.

"Enough is enough", he said before adjourning parliament until Sunday.

The sprawling Green Zone used to house Saddam Hussein's Republican Palace, whose annex is being used now as the US embassy.
