Summary: The United States' current account deficit and foreign debt are not dire threats to its global position, as would-be Cassandras warn. U.S. power is firmly grounded on economic superiority and financial stability that will not end soon.
David H. Levey recently retired after 19 years as Managing Director of Moody's Sovereign Ratings Service. Stuart S. Brown is Professor of Economics and International Relations in the Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

Bill PLEASE excoriate Friedman's piece about how we should stay the course in Iraq but be vigilant at home because as we beat the terrorists over there, they are more adament on getting us here. Is that clear?
Friedman is such a fucking tool.

Since they didn't want to provide the shooter
they trumped up a charge and narced him
to the Romans and got Pontius P to do

Greens Achieve Ballot Status in NE; Celebrate Early 2005 Wins in Illinois and Wisconsin.
Monday, April 11, 2005
WISCONSIN: In a city council general election in Madison on April 5, three Green Party incumbents won reelection despite an unprecedented vote suppression campaign funded by the county Democratic Party, leaders of the Chamber of Commerce, and the realtors association. Ald. Austin King won 78% of the vote, Ald. Brian Benford won 55%, and popular Madison Council President Brenda Konkel was unopposed in her reelection bid.
The Democratic-Chamber of Commerce smear campaign did claim several Green victims, however. Despite spirited grassroots efforts, Lori Nitzel and Sarah King lost their races with 43% and 45% each. The Democrat-funded automated phoning and a negative direct-mail campaign suggested that an "ultra-liberal" political party was about to "seize control" of Madison, and made thinly veiled references to one candidate's sexual orientation in urging voters to support candidates who "share our values."
Observers believe that the main purpose and effect of the last-minute negative campaigning was to suppress progressive voter turnout. Indeed, Madison turnout was an all-time low for a city council election. Some local Democratic Party activists have quit their party in disgust since Tuesday.

A coalition of progressive religious leaders and organizations today expressed outrage that Republican leaders are attacking the faith of Democrats and progressives in a cynical, partisan effort to win support for a handful of extremist judicial nominees.
===========================================================
The Clergy and Laity Network will sponsor a national prayer vigil on April 24 and is inviting citizens of all faith traditions to protest this unprecedented attack.
The CLN and DriveDemocracy are the coordinators of a national coalition of more than 65 religious organizations. Their national "Breaking the Silence" campaign kicked off April 4 at Riverside Church in NYC and is continuing with a national tour of America.

Letter to Senator Frist Concerning Judicial Nominations Tactics
Letter from PFAW President Ralph G. Neas to Senator Bill Frist
Excerpt from letter:
I urge you to repudiate the "Justice Sunday" event at which you are scheduled to speak later this month.
The event is being promoted with deeply offensive materials suggesting that the filibuster is being used to target people of faith, and that proponents of the filibuster are forcing individuals to choose between serving in public office and Christian faith.
This is religious McCarthyism. It is dishonest, destructive and despicable.

Stephanie Miller is coming to Columbus, Ohio. A member of a peace group I belong to was contacted. They asked, if we were willing to be one of the sponsors of her visit. The cost, 5000.00. In return, our group would receive some publicity on her show.
Can you believe it? Obviously, Stephanie nor her people, are knowledgeable about the peace movement.
Who the hell can pay some celebrity 5,000.00?
Besides, most of us don't listen to Stephanie.

BBC SUCKS!
The quality of BBC journalism has dropped substantially over the last few years. I listen to World Service every night and while their features are usually excellent, their basic news reporting is pretty mediocre. They did a report on the social security debate and offered no real information. The practice "he said/she said" reporting without stating what the real facts are. They now usually refer to Bush as "President Bush" at the beginning of their reports rather than "the American president..." as they used to. And take a look at the BBC News website. The articles are New York Post length (ie, really really short) and offer no depth.

MAINE Reps John Eder (Green) and Ben Dudley (Democrat) have introduced two bills in the Maine legislature that would deny corporations their 'personhood'. Corporations currently hold legal status as 'persons' thanks to an anticonstitutional court ruling in the 19th century); the bills specify that a corporation does not have the same constitutional rights as a human, such as the right to engage in political speech or activity.

Bill Clinton have a small influence on the stock market. The It Hype changed and no other values or industries are in sight, that is the risk of the US economy.
Consider to invest in russia and some swiss or german euro markets (bonds) I think you would sleep better.
Why is that. US Portfolios are not best possibel secured for currency risks. USD ranked to high.
The USD will drop another 15% over the next 5 years.
Why drops IBM "The balance sheet" is in USD and not in Euro.

okay, i already posted this but it was in hour one and those pesky hands o' time had already moved to hour two. but i think this is an important point so here it is yet again:
"The popular conception of Mr. Lincoln as one not seeking public honors [is] very wide of the mark. He was entirely human in this regard, but his desire for political preferment was hedged about by a sense of obligation to the truth which nothing could shake. This fidelity to truth was ingrained and unchangeable.
In all the speeches i ever heard him make - and they were many - he never even insinuated an untruth, nor did he ever fail when stating his opponent's positions to state them fully and fairly. He often stated his opponent's position better than his opponent did or could. To say what was false, or even to leave his hearers under a wrong impression, was impossible to him. Within this high enclosure he was as ambitious of earthly honors as any man of his time.
Furthermore, he was an adept at log-rolling or any political game that did not involve falsity. I was Secretary of the Republican State Committee of Illinois during some years when he was active in campaign work. He was often present at meetings of the committee, although not a member, and took part in the committee work. His judgment was very much deferred to in such matters. He was one of the shrewdest politicians in the State. Nobody had more experience in that way, nobody knew better than he what was passing in the minds of the people. Nobody knew better how to turn things to advantage politically, and nobody was readier to take such advantage, provided it did noot involve dishonorable means. He could not cheat people out of their votes any more than out of their money." -Horace White
Can you believe republicans honestly consider themselves the heirs to this man's legacy? what a tickle.

Our Green Party in Maine could be so much more if our so-called Democrat Governor would listen more intently. We do what we can and blog recognition is better than being ignored everywhere else. Thanks for noticing, AlanSmithee.

CARTER: RICH STATES "DON'T GIVE A DAMN" ABOUT POOR
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter reprimanded rich countries for failing to live up to their moral obligation to fight disease and poverty in the developing world, commenting at a human rights conference that "we really don't give a damn."
=========================================================
Carter was particularly critical of the U.S. for failing to support recent initiatives at the United Nations and in Europe to boost aid levels to 0.7% of the gross national product.
U.S. foreign aid is approximately 0.18 percent of gross national product, the lowest of any G-7 nation and far below a 0.7 percent United Nations target that 22 of the world's developed nations have agreed to meet by 2015.

I am not a fan of Robert Reich. He stabbed Clinton in the back. He was for his impeachment. He is listed on the site- Make Them Accountable -as a member of the Media Hall of Shame.
But what is most troubling, was a strange little speech Reich gave on NPR. It was on Capitalism. "Capitalism will survive', he said over and over. It was just bizarre.

OK, I found the answer: With the estate tax gone the Capital Gains exemption goes away too. This sucks for regular people, because only estates over $1 are subjuct to the Estate tax, but the Capital Gains exemption applies to ALL estates, even small ones. So the little guy will end up paying much more in captial gains taxes, while life is made easier for the very very rich:
--------------------------
The Estate Tax Has Been Replaced by a Capital Gains Tax
The new law replaces the estate tax with a capital gains tax. After the estate tax repeal takes effect in 2010, your heirs will have to pay a larger capital gains tax if they sell the assets that they inherit. Under the prior law, upon your death your assets were valued as of the date of your death. In tax language, the assets receive a stepped up basis (i.e., a new basis) as of the date of death. For example, if you purchased an asset for $1000, and if was worth $10,000 at date of death, your heir's basis in that property would be "stepped up" to $10,000, even though your basis in the asset was what you paid for it, i.e., $1000. If your heir sold the asset the next day for $10,000, he or she would not have to pay a capital gains tax.
Under the new law, if you die in 2010 (or thereafter if repeal remains in effect), your heir would receive a carryover basis. That means that your basis in the property would be carried over to your heir. Thus if you purchased the asset for $1000, that basis in the asset will be carried over to your heir, even if the asset is worth $10,000 on the date of your death. If your heir sells the asset the next day after he or she receives it for $10,000, the heir will have a $9000 gain, which will be subject to capital gains tax.
Isn't it interesting that the politicians never mentioned this when they were bragging about "eliminating the death tax?"

Sammer!
The "Death Tax" repeal will result in higher taxes for almost all heirs.
While the Estate Tax only applies to estates over $1 million, the Capital Gains exemption applies to all estates. With it gone heirs will now be subject to much much larger Capital Gains taxes when they sell any inherited asset.
Taxes for regular people will go up, way up. While life is made easier for the very very rich.
