***** ACTION ALERT *****
PROTEST GOVT SECRECY TOMMORROW AM
Sibel Edmonds needs your help. Tomorrow was to be the oral hearing on Sibel's lawsuit fighting the State Secrets Privilege imposed over her case. The court has made the extraordinary decision to close the hearing to the public and to Sibel as well. Please come help show our outrage about the excessive secrecy imposed on her case.
Sibel is organizing an impromptu protest in front of the courthouse.
Where: E. Barrett Prettyman United States Courthouse, Court of Appeals Courtroom, 333 Constitution Avenue, N.W., 5th Floor
When: Thursday, April 21, 9:00 a.m.-noon
++++++++++++++
Edmonds, a former Middle Eastern language specialist hired by the FBI shortly after 9/11, was fired in 2002 after repeatedly reporting serious security breaches and misconduct. Edmonds challenged her retaliatory dismissal by filing a lawsuit in federal court, but her case was dismissed last July after Attorney General John Ashcroft invoked the so-called "state secrets privilege," and retroactively classified briefings to Congress related to her case.
The government has argued that every aspect of Edmonds' case involves state secrets -- including where she was born and what languages she speaks -- and therefore cannot go forward. Edmonds is appealing to the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to reinstate her case. Several 9/11 family member advocacy groups filed a friend-of-the-court brief in her support. Ann Beeson, Associate Legal Director of the ACLU National Office, will argue on behalf of Edmonds. Oral arguments will be heard on April 21.

Lets try this again... error in time zone conversion
The strange thing about this is that Tom Hartman is now hosting a 6:00am to 9:00 am show of his own on JPOJ so when he finishes with AL he can have AL on his nationally broadcast show which is on from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm...
but wait Al is on AAR from 9:00 to 12:00 on KPOJ...OH OH high chance of matter andti matter explosion warning warning.

I still don't get it. Is Tom Hartman on a different station, or will he be bumped by Al?

House Ethics Panel to Probe Tom DeLay
1 hour, 6 minutes ago Politics - U. S. Congress
By LARRY MARGASAK, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - The Republican chairman of the House ethics committee offered on Wednesday to begin an investigation of Majority Leader Tom DeLay to end a stalemate that has kept the panel from functioning this year.
Rep. Doc Hastings (news, bio, voting record), R-Wash., made the proposal at a news conference flanked by three of the four other Republicans on the ethics panel. The evenly divided committee also has five Democrats.
Senior committee Democrat Alan Mollohan of West Virginia quickly rejected the offer, saying his party would continue blocking the panel from operating unless investigative rules imposed by Republicans were changed.
This is the second time in two weeks that Republicans tried to break the deadlock, while Democrats have held their ground and criticized the GOP-written rules for investigating lawmakers, passed in January without Democratic support. Democrats have accused the majority party of writing the rules to protect DeLay.
"The first principle in doing it right is that it be bipartisan," said Mollohan. "That's a beginning point for me."
Mollohan would not say whether he supported an investigation of DeLay, commenting that his effort to change the rules — to prevent automatic dismissal of cases — is "totally independent from any specific case."

From:
Moving America One Step Forward And Two Steps Back
by Diane Farsetta
MAF's roots can be traced back to California's gubernatorial recall, which put movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger into office. In November 2003, one month after the recall election, the Daily News of Los Angeles interviewed Sacramento-based political consultant Sal Russo. He characterized the recall campaign he and other Republican strategists had organized and funded as a near-unstoppable, grassroots tour de force. "We took on the political establishment and won, and they feel empowered," said Russo of the 120,000 recall supporters in his database. "They want to be involved. . . . We'll change the name to something like 'Move America Forward,'" and go national, he predicted.

Please let me know if any of you have seen this in your newspapers:
A one page ad that starts out with "It's Not Nice to Brainwash Kids. This urgent message is dedicated to every child in America and to all who love them.
It is basically an environmentalist bashing ad against what they call (EFS) Education for Sustainability. It promotes the book "Set Up & Sold Out: Find Out What Green Really Means"
which can be found here http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0964510812/qid=1114038412/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-9357044-7652906?v=glance&s=books
The claim is that the Greens are brainwashing children and have a "socialist/communist agenda".
Am I missing something here?

"Democracy is still upon its trial. The civic genius of our people is its only bulwark, and neither laws nor monuments, neither battleships nor public libraries... nor churches nor universities nor civil service examinations (?!?) can save us from degeneration if the inner mystery is lost.
That mystery... consists in nothing but two common... inveterate habits carried into public life... habits more precious, perhaps, than any that the human race has gained... One of them is the habit of trained and disciplined good temper toward the opposite party when it fairly wins its innings... The other is that of fierce and merciless resentment toward every man or set of men who break the public peace.

so, "official" = "exclusive". talking about the XM/Sirrus thing. Says on the main page of AAR that "as of July 16, Air America will broadcast exclusively on XM Satellite Radio.
I know that the hosts have little say in this and probably didn't know much about the deal.
my question to the new CEO is this, my question is what happen to integrity? didn't some of the hosts on the show plug Sirrus because it wasn't owned by Murdoch? and so we wouldn't help Murdoch out with his controlling the media? yeah, yeah, it is business and money. but wasn't AAR started to counter the whole right wing media control? and shouldn't that mean trying to make things work without buying into the system?
just questions...and this doesn't mean i won't be listening to AAR. I stream so no worries for me, but i feel for those who purchase Sirrus because of AAR. i think they the CEO missed the boat about this because Howard Stern is going to Sirrus and will bring in many new customers. Also, Martha Stewert signed a deal with Sirrus for a "Martha Living" thing.

First Baker-Carter Hearing
Right-wing pundit John Fund offers racially-charged testimony
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/4/18/172326/897
The first meeting of the Baker-Carter election commission was disappointing and, at times, outrageous and tainted with racially-charged innuendo. Let me make absolutely clear that I greatly admire former President Jimmy Carter and believe he was insightful and on-target throughout the hearing. However, given the incredible lack of balance and profound lack of good faith demonstrated by some of CarterÂ’s fellow commissioners and many of the witnesses at this hearing, at times he seemed to be a very lonely voice of sanity.
The remarks of Mr. James Baker, III, which were echoed by a number of right wing political operatives called as witnesses, seemed to have a singular purpose of spreading hoaxes and conspiracy theories about ineligible Democratic voters being allowed to cast votes. The remedy was cleverly repeated like a broken record, “photo ID, photo ID, photo ID.” Right wing pundit John Fund was called as an “expert” witness by the hearing and offered racially charged proposals with racially charged rhetoric.
The substance of the testimony alleging “voter fraud” was a fraud itself. One panel on “access and integrity” inexplicably included two partisan Republican political operatives, Colleen McAndrews (most recently a leader in the successful campaign to recall former California Governor Gray Davis and described as a “behind the scenes force in Republican politics for years”) and John Fund (of the notoriously far-right Wall Street Journal editorial page). Fund’s Wall Street Journal Editorial Page once promoted bizarre claims that then-First Lady Hillary Clinton had participated in a cover-up involving the death of former White House Counsel Vince Foster. Today, his hoax appears to have shifted to claims of “voter fraud”(though I am sure he would say Senator Clinton is responsible for that, as well). The remedy, per Fund and McAndrews, – restrictions on provisional ballots and new voter identification requirements.
At the outset, Mr. Fund l

The Vatican Rag by Tom Lehrer
First you get down on your knees
Fiddle with your rosaries
Bow your head with great respect
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect
Do whatever steps you want if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff
Everybody say his own kyrie eleison
Doin' the Vatican Rag
Get in line in that processional
Step into that small confessional
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original
If it is, try playin' it safer
Drink the wine and chew the wafer
Two, four, six, eight
Time to transubstantiate
So get down upon your knees
Fiddle with your rosaries
Bow your head with great respect
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect
Make a cross on your abdomen
When in Rome do like a Roman
Ave Maria, gee it's good to see ya
Gettin' ecstatic an' sorta dramatic an'
Doin' the Vatican Rag

If they were dumb enough to sign with Murdoch and XM, that's their problem. In effect, their blowing off all the people that have Sirius...and that number will be growing big time when Howard hits there. AAR was stupid as a MF to do this.

Vatican drive to curb gay marriage
The Vatican says homosexuality goes against "natural moral law"
The Vatican has launched a global campaign against gay marriage in an attempt to reverse the spread of legislation in Europe and the Americas that permits it.
In a strongly-worded 12-page document signed by the Pope's chief theological adviser, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Church brands homosexual unions as immoral, unnatural and harmful.
The Vatican's stance has been greeted with dismay by opponents who say it runs against human rights conventions and is out of touch with the modern world.
It comes a day after US President George Bush - a Methodist Christian - spoke out against the idea of same-sex marriages as church leaders met in Minneapolis to debate the appointment of a gay bishop.

On Mussolini's "Corporatism":
Mussolini did not endorse "Corporatism" in order to let Corporations as in Companies run the society. Far from it.
His use of "Corporate" stems from the same Corporate which means "Body".
As a former Socialist, Mussolini endorsed the view that society existed not just as individuals en masse, but as identifiable classes.
However, his idea was to bring social groups into bodies under the State.
He argued that class divisions occurred not mainly WITHIN countries but BETWEEN countries.
Thus Italy was a "Proletarian" nation which had to struggle for a revolution against "Bourgeois" nations such as Britain.
Naturally, this meant that the State needed dictatorial power to crush all divisions within the society, according to whatever he thought would best unify the society into one giant organism.
Hence, Corporatism.
Not domination by the corporations.
See, Corporations don't much like Fascism unless they have to accept it vs. a Revolution -- because the Fascist governments end up controlling Corporations TOO.

(Gibberish)
Go go gophers, watch them go go go.
Go go gophers, watch them go go go.
Here comes the colonel with his sargeant,
Both are a-roarin' and a-chargin'.
Go go gophers, watch them go go go.
Two little Indians, no others near.
Colonel he vows these two soon disappear.
Fighting the army with soldiers galore.
What can two Indians do?
(Gibberish)
Go go gophers, watch them go go go.
Go go gophers, watch them go go go.
Here comes the colonel with his sargeant,
Both are a-roarin' and a-chargin'.

I think Janeane takes so much flack from people, and HAS taken so much flack that she can take a vacation from the phones. She travels and the flight crew gives her grief. She gets death threats. In my book she can take a vacation from idiot callers who want to debate her.

I have a feeling this is going to be one of the shortest Pope-a-patations ever. He's 78. They're probably already picking out the next guy. And the name: Benedict. Most Americans auto-add 'Arnold' onto the end of it.
That aside, I live in Louisville, Ky. and Bill Frist is going to be here on 04/24 speaking at Highview Baptist Mega-Church. This 'event' is taking place 3 miles from my home. The charter topic of this meeting is "Democrats Are Against People Of Faith". That's a load of shit and we all know that, but they're going to broadcast this government propaganda to all of their Christo-Fascist robots: Signed with a U.S. Senator. Frankly, it's offensive. Our organization is planning a protest in coordination with other progressive groups in the region.
I promise to post pictures.
If anyone would like to assist or just show moral support, please visit:
Since we're at ground zero for this vile moment, I wouldn't feel right not carrying a sign and passing out flyers.

If they were dumb enough to sign with Murdoch and XM, that's their problem. In effect, their blowing off all the people that have Sirius...and that number will be growing big time when Howard hits there. AAR was stupid as a MF to do this.

As far as I can see, Murdock (Newscorp) and Clear Channel have no significant holding in XM Radio. Perhaps they were early investors, but if so they are out now.
My problem with XM is that they crapify the AAR schedule rather than run the full feed like Sirius does (up to now).

Condi tried her russian skills.
Thursday, April 21, 2005. Issue 3151. Page 2.
Did I Say 'Da'? I Meant 'Nyet, Nyet!'
Reuters
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice tried out her rusty Russian in an interview on Ekho Moskvy radio Wednesday, only to get caught out by a question on whether she might run for president.
"Da," Rice answered in Russian, before realizing her misunderstanding and hastily adding, "Nyet" -- seven times.
Rice's interview turned into a linguistic ordeal when the Soviet expert and former provost of Stanford University fielded a schoolgirl listener's question on how she achieved her career success.
"It's too complicated to answer!" Rice, in Moscow to meet President Vladimir Putin, started out in English. "It is an opportunity for me to come back to Russia, a place I love very much. I love the culture and the language."
She then switched into Russian but quickly hit trouble.
Apparently meaning to say that she would like to do her next interview in the language of her host, she chose a verb that sounded more like "to earn money" than the Russian for "to do."
"You understand it will be very difficult because I am out of practice, and in your language there are these awful cases!" she continued. "It's very difficult for us, and it is very difficult to talk without making mistakes."

High-school students and soldiers deserve more
By Jim McDermott
Special to The Times
The Seattle Times' editorial "Don't ban recruiters from high school" (April 15) does a disservice to every high-school junior and senior, as well as every soldier who would like some say over his or her destiny. That should have been painfully obvious following The Times' own coverage of Emiliano Santiago, a soldier who has served his country with distinction, but now faces a sentence to serve because the military cannot recruit enough soldiers.
Buried in the fine print of Santiago's recruitment paperwork eight years ago was a provision called stop-loss. It is meant to ensure that America has enough soldiers to defend itself in time of national emergency, but the Pentagon under Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has perverted the use of stop-loss because military recruitment is significantly below goals.
Stop-loss now affects 50,000 soldiers. Santiago could end up serving until Christmas Eve, 2031, 37 years after he signed up — a virtual lifetime.
Every student and every parent should remember Santiago's case because it could happen to you, and no one in the military is going to tell you beforehand. And stop-loss is not the only stealth tactic in use by the military.
A provision buried in the No Child Left Behind law forces high schools to turn over student contact information to military recruiters. Any school that balks can lose all of its federal money. The Seattle Times casually tells its readers that a student can sign a form to opt out. The reality is that young people have lost their right to privacy and The Times is stone-cold silent on restoring this fundamental right in a free society.
I served my country as an officer in the United States Navy, and I believe that every American has a responsibility to give back to our country. I served my country as an officer in the United States Navy, and I believe that every American has a responsibility to give back to our country. For some, a career in the military is the right choice. But a decision to even consider a military career belongs solely with the individual, and that's not what we have today. That's why I joined with the punk band Anti-Flag to launch a nationwide drive to alert students on how to opt out and demand that Congress restore student privacy. (More information can be found at www.militaryfreezone.org)
Meanwhile, don't blame the recruiters. These people were selected because they are role models, the best of the best to represent the military. Now, they suffer under a quota system, and recruiters are under increasing pressure to find soldiers. Army National Guard recruitment plunged 31 percent in February and fell another 12 percent in March.
Young people are the hope and future of this great nation. We owe them more than to casually compromise their basic right to privacy. According to The Seattle Times, students have the right to die in Iraq, but they don't have the right to privacy. With misguided opinion like this, is it any wonder that young people don't trust adults?
Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Seattle, represents the 7th Congressional District in Washington.
